Open or Closed-Minded? - Open, in most circumstances. Like all dwarves, Zap can have a stubborn streak about what he feels an expert in or when he has a great idea.
Conscientious or Spontaneous? - He plans his tools, but rarely plans their application.
Extroverted or Introverted? - An equal mix of both. He enjoys company but sometimes feels constrained by the schedules and methods of others.
Agreeable or Disagreeable? - Agreeable and pleasant, in the way that only dwarves can be. Dwarves and engineers in their own right are avoided by some just on their own merits.
Confident or Neurotic? - While not to the degree of complete foolishness, Zap is overconfident in the areas he feels he has expertise, and modestly confident in most other areas.
Social Traits
Backstory:
-The Rusthammer clan is a relatively new and small clan, compared to those with lineage like Anvilmar or Bronzebeard. The reason for this is that the clan actually used to be called the Brightaxe clan, reputed axesmiths. Zap's great-grandpappy Thadius Brightaxe got drunk and lost all of his money in a marathon three-day poker game. He risked his family name to buy back in. He lost.
-The family has lost its reputation for axe-smithing because they lost that really core brand message. The only reason that the family still exists at all with any degree of wealth is that Zap's grandpappy, Russell Rusthammer, was not an axesmith but a brewer. He had no luck devising the quality beers and ales that dwarves love. But he did have tremendous luck in creating a light ale that he could manufacture and sell at an incredible volume and a low price. The dwarves of the Alterac Mountains and the Aerie Peaks don't like it. But they can afford it. And they drink lots. Incidentally, humans think it's okay, but of course, what do they know? The name of this brew is Natural Alterac Light Ale - or Naterac for short.
-Zap's pappy, Hadrick Rusthammer, and his mother, Malida, had an odd relationship. Malida was a kind woman but had a tendency to come and go as she pleased. She loved her husband and son in her own way but disliked being tied down sought out the things and people that interested her, even if that meant that she would be gone for extended periods. Hadrick ended up becoming something of a jack-of-all-trades, helping with the brewery, smithing weapons, and domestic affairs and cooking. Without much supervision, Zap was free to pursue his own desires and interests. He did learn some skills from his father - what self-respecting dwarf wouldn't know how to brew and smith - but eventually came to be fascinated with the occasionally imported gnomish tech goods that would make their way up north. He was hooked on the POSSIBILITIES.
-Eventually, Zap made his way to the south to study engineering, learning and paying his way with labor in the forges and the mines. He spent eight years studying and learning, and found he could not stay idle in one place anymore. He had learned enough and was ready to do things his own way and in new places. This desire was also spurred on by the museum maintained by the Explorer's League, the group of dwarven explorers whose insatiable lust for historical knowledge caused them to scour the known and unknown world for discoveries! Zap felt like this was his calling.
-He joined the Explorer's League, passing the tests to become a junior member. initially, his star rose as a crafty dwarf who could use his tools and smarts to achieve results. But then the reports came in that his methods were sometimes unpredictable and caused collateral damage. Numerous warnings and infractions piled up on his record, until the higher-ups in the League decided that he wasn't taking enough remedial measures to correct his behaviors - and not wanting to deal with the liability if he actually destroyed an artifact or caused a cave-in - they revoked his credentials. Zap was disheartened, but soon realized that you can take the explorer out of the League, but you can't take the League out of the explorer!
-He now continues his explorations in his own way at his own pace, attempting to land that big discovery that will make the League admit him right back in.

-Zap only pretends to like alcohol, and drinks it regularly, but its mostly so he doesn't lose the ability to stomach it at all. As a young 'un, there was so much around that he drank it to the point where he just got sick of it. There a lot of things he has claimed that he has done while drunk, but the drink is just a convenient excuse, usually.
