"Should your acceptance of my oath be sincere, then the Flame shall not harm you."
Laird knelt down beside the lantern, and opened the shutter facing him. He then rotated it and opened the other shutter, so that the flame was open to both himself and Connor.
Then the priest looked up to Connor.
"I, Laird, dubbed Candlemaker by the Flame, swear to serve you as I serve the Flame itself. I offer you my loyalty, my power, and if called upon my life. I forswear all other allegiances, but those owed to you and to the Flame. Everything I have is yours, for so long as you wish it and so long as this oath serves the wishes of the Flame. I swear this oath upon the Flame, and so shall my conviction be judged by the Flame."
And with that, he reached into the lantern, pressing his hand into the Flame. No reaction of pain showed upon Laird's face, nor did the aroma of burning flesh fill the room.
Instead, he continued to look at the young prince silently, expectantly.
