“Well Aethon I think we scared off enough of them pests that Ma will be happy..”
The charmander next to him kept watch for the pair, bright blue predatory eyes searching the darkness around them.
Alex started to walk again. “Well come on, the sooner we double check, the sooner we can leave. Never liked caves much.” The boy’s eyes shifted about the cave. He half expected something to jump out of the shadows at him.
Alex moved deeper into the cave and Aethon kept close to his master, never more than a foot away. The blue flickering light he gave off penetrated the darkness around them. They had left the entrance several hours ago. He marked the floor as they walked so make sure they didn’t get lost once they had finished their job.
“Lucky for us most of the pests that live in here run at a little fire, huh buddy?” He reached down and scratched the top of his charmander’s head. As he did Aethon’s entire body tensed and the charmander focused up ahead.
The boy looked up towards the darkness. He saw nothing, however. As they continued, he eventually started to hear wings flapping up ahead. Alex sighed and looked down. “How many zubat can be in one cave?”
They rounded a corner, and laying on the ground was a fairly large Noivern. Alex froze immediately as he realized that the sounds he had heard were baby noibats flying around. His breath hitched for a second before he realized this Noivern wasn’t moving. The noibats all fled as he approached to get a better look.
Long ragged wounds were torn into the side of the noivern. As he got closer he realized it wasn’t breathing at all.
“Ma’s gonna want to know about this Aethon. We should go now.” As he started to turn to leave the noibats all flew past him. Except for one, which flew directly at Alex and attached itself to his arm.
Aethon started to growl lowly, the flame at the tip of his tail burning a bit brighter.
“Aethon no.”
The growling slowly died down as Aethon took Alex’s command. The noibat crawled across Alex’s torso and buried itself under his arm. Alex smiled at the new pokemon. “Looks like we have a new friend, Aethon. I think you’re just gonna have to play nice.”
Two hours and a wrong turn later Alex emerged from the cave and tracked down his mom.
“Hey Ma, you’re never gonna guess what I found!” He smiled at her excitedly and lifted his arm to show her the noibat.
She blinked at him. “Was it alone?”
He shook his head. “No that’s why I left so early. There was a dead noivern there as well. Plus more noibats.”
Natalie frowned. “I’ll have to send in Charlie then.”
Alex opened his mouth to protest, before he was shot a look that stopped him in his tracks. Natalie continued. “If there are other noivern in that cave we need to take care of them, preferably without you dying.”
She moved to leave. “Good job though, take good care of your new pokemon.”
Alex smiled again gently petting the noibat clinging to his shirt. “I think you need a name. What do you think Aethon?” Aethon laid down looking up at Alex pitifully. “...no need to be jealous of him.”
The boy gently picked up the noibat to lock eyes with him. “I think I’ll call you Priam.”
