Animal Handling
The Animal Handling skill is used whenever you attempt to understand animalistic behaviors or command and control beasts and other animal-like creatures. It can be equally useful in dealing with scared or defensive wild animals, or handling domestic animals, but is typically restricted to beasts and monstrosities without higher intelligence. Those that can speak with beasts still benefit from proficiency in Animal Handling, as the capacity to speak with them does not directly translate to a capacity to handle or command them due to the simplified manner in which they view the world.
Examples
- Strength (Animal Handling). Strength is used when attempting to overpower or forcibly stop a beast that may be attempting to throw off a rider or buck a saddle from its back.
- Dexterity (Animal Handling). Dexterity is used to deftly control an animal, such as when riding horseback or navigating a beast through hazardous terrain.
- Constitution (Animal Handling). Constitution is used when attempting to exhaust an animal through sheer stamina, such as outlasting the flailing of a panicked beast.
- Intelligence (Animal Handling). Intelligence is used to recall knowledge about animal rearing and handling, or best practices concerning their care.
- Wisdom (Animal Handling). Wisdom is used to infer the mood and intent of various beasts based on their sounds and body language.
- Charisma (Animal Handling). Charisma is used to calm or soothe a beast, which can in turn make them more placated and receptive to handling.
