Perception
A Perception check allows you to spot, hear, other otherwise detect the presence of something. It measures your general awareness of your surroundings and the keenness of your senses, such as when attempting to hear a conversation through a closed door, eavesdrop under an open window, or detecting creatures moving silently or lying in wait, preparing for an ambush. The base ability used is normally Wisdom.
The following actions are frequently used in tandem with each other under a general Perception check, though you can call out what you may be specifically looking for as some abilities may give you Advantage or Disadvantage on specific approaches, such as Sunlight Sensitivity or Keen Senses.

You devote an Action to try and find something with a Wisdom (Perception) check, normally a hidden creature or concealed object. The DC of this check is normally equal to the Stealth check of a hidden creature, or the Sleight of Hand check used to conceal an object, or based on a DC determined by what you are trying to detect. Depending on circumstances (such as unfavorable weather conditions or particularly messy locations), a DM may impose Disadvantage on your check.
