Components: VSM($) (a black onyx gemstone worth 150gp, which the spell consumes)
Duration: Instantaneous
After spending the casting time channeling the necromantic essence of the chosen undead into the silver chain, you then touch the undead creature and break its chains. The undead creature must not be under the direct control of another individual. The target immediately regains the the mental stats it had in life, and can speak the languages it knew in life as its free will is returned to them. All physical stats remain the same.
The awakened undead is not under your direct control, and is free to act as it would in life, though it knows that you were the one to return its free will.
If you speak the creature's true name while casting the spell, the material component is not expended by the spell.
At Higher Levels. This spell improves in multiple ways when you cast it at a higher level.
- When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, you may target an additional creature for each slot level above 5th, or the casting time is reduced by one increment for each slot level above 5th.
- When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 8th level or higher, you may attempt to awaken an undead creature that is under someone's direct control. You must make a contested spellcasting check against the controller using your spellcasting ability modifiers. If you succeed on the check, the undead is broken free of their control and awakened.
