Commune with Dead
5th-Level Necromancy (Ritual)
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range: Self
Components: VSM (an item connected to the deceased person)
Duration: 1 minute
You contact the spirit of a deceased creature that is willing and able to return. If they are unwilling to speak with you, or their spirit is unable to return, the spell automatically fails. To successfully contact the spirit, you must have something that is connected to them in some way. This can be a likeness of the deceased, part of their body, or a treasured possession or piece of clothing. Without such a catalyst, the spell fails.
If the creature is a powerful immortal being, such as a demigod, the spell fails. The caster is aware that this is the reason for the spell failing.
You may ask the spirit up to three questions. The spirit is under no compulsion to answer the questions, but you may try to persuade it to do so. This spirit is the true soul of the deceased creature, and it can recall allies and enemies just as it could in life, and also remembers past communes it may have been a part of.
Once the spell is successfully cast, it cannot be cast again to summon the same spirit for one year.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, you may ask two additional questions for every slot level above 5th.
