“Death was not the end I believed it to be. No rest or joyous reunions in the Light awaited me. What I witnessed challenged all I knew. With my final breath, I saw impossible places—worlds within worlds brimming with beings that defied description. [...] Death is not an end, but a beginning.”

The Shadowlands were the cosmic realm of death and were one of the six Outer Planes that made up the universe. They were an infinite plane where the souls of deceased mortals would go to find rest, serve, be reborn, or face atonement for the sins they committed in life.

Description

At the very heart of the Shadowlands was the ancient city of Oribos, which was the home of the home of the Arbiter—an ancient, impartial being that was responsible for weighing the souls of the dead and assigning them to one of the countless afterlives that the Shadowlands was made up of.

Inhabitants

While the Shadowlands were the final resting place of deceased mortal souls, they were far from the only inhabitants of the expansive realm. There were creatures that were endemic to the Plane of Death, which spawned naturally in the Shadowlands. Many of these creatures had their own unique roles in the unique ecosystem of the afterlives. In addition, it was not uncommon for mortal souls who sought out an afterlife of service to be transformed into creatures more suited to the Shadowlands so that they could serve whatever role called to them.
