December 31st

Lantresor followed up on the stunned Fereki, and he was able to finish off the wolf with a devastating strike, and then he rushed forward to pursue Gerrei. However, the wolf nabbed the blade in its teeth to prevent the strike.

The other wolves continued to howl and the chill of the sound washed over the group.

Sol focused on the groups of wolves and he blew the horn of blasting just as Zar’Kaa whipped through in a whirlwind of spears as he got his bearings. Some of the wolves lashed out at him, but Zar’Kaa conflagrated some of the wolves in a rebuke of emerald flame.

Arthak continued to focus on Gerrei, but a wolf managed to bite surprisingly deep, and the grasping vine that was keeping the larger wolf bound withered away. The massive orc was able to shove his blade through the beast’s mouth and pinned him to the ground, defeating him.

Nyxxa continued to focus on the swarm of wolves as Seria followed up with an exhalation of her acidic breath. As the wolves closed in on the groups, Symma released another strike of lightning, and wolves were sent flying across the battlefield. And then another strike slammed into the ground, devastating the group completely.

Odyn says: Haukenulfir and Fenryr have fallen! The spirits of the great hunt have granted their blessings to the champions!

As the battlefield quieted, the group quickly tended to their wounds. Sol pulled out his Horn of Valhallas and asked if it was alright to use during the contest. Odyn asked if it was one of their warhorns, and a val’kyr confirmed. He sent a small squirrel to relay to Sol that the item wouldn’t even work as they were in Valhallas, but also, it was technically against the rules to summon more unrelated beings into the contest if they were not through their own power.

Nyxxa started to watch for sabotage as they returned to their hunt, and Arthak continued his pursuit after the other party in order to try and mess with them. However, it seemed they had become wise to his attempts, and it was a lot harder to find them.

Rak’Symma used [Wild Cunning] to call upon various bestial spirits to help follow some of the tracks. She then tried to use her magic to locate some of the powerful bears in the area. Seria was the first one to catch the scent, and she rushed forward and locked eyes with a massive bear.

She shifted into her bear form, which took the bear aback, and she then charged into the massive creature. Arthak arrived on the scene next, and he uprooted a tree and slammed it into the bear in a double-team attack.

They were all able to successfully overcome Arthfael the bear, and they continued to push forward in their pursuit of the largest targets in the fields. However, Nyxxa picked up that they were being led astray by the trail, and it was likely one of the enemy team had laid. Even so, they lost time in the process.

Arthak continued to try and find the enemy team, and he stumbled into them. Velhari looked at him with a mixture of annoyance and incredulousness.

Velhari says: Correct me if I’m wrong, Arthak, but aren’t we supposed to be hunting game right now? What is your obsession with getting in our way?
Arthak Saurfang says: The others are here to hunt game. I’m here to play the game.
Velhari says: We have no interest in your games, Arthak, stay out of our way. Jubei’thos, keep an eye on him.

Jubei’thos fixated on Arthak, and Fathnyr snarled as they passed by.

Skovald says: You are brave to come here on your own, but I suppose, at the moment, it would not do to raise hands against you. Not yet, anyways. If you’re smart, you’ll stay out of our way, like Velhari said. Come, ignore him, he tries to waste our time.

The rest of the group walked away as Jubei’thos trailed behind Arthak.

Arthak continued to wander again, but he ran into Skovald, and there was a grunt of disappointment.

Arthak Saurfang says: Oh, it’s you. I was looking for one of the other ones, by all means, continue with your hunt, I’ll find one of the other ones.
Skovald says: I didn’t expect you to waste such time being such a nuisance. I thought you had more to contribute to your companions.
Arthak Saurfang says: One would argue that wasting your time is valuable, but you aren’t one of the ones I was looking for, if it’s all the same.
Skovald says: It is all the same.

Skovald held out his hands and a runic circle with deep violet runes erupted around Arthak. It was a shadowy cage, and Iskar stepped out of the shadows.

Iskar says: Apologies, warchief. I can’t have you distracting one of my team.

Sol, over a mental bond, suggested Arthak could comment on the fact Skovald’s son was in hel.

Arthak Saurfang says: Fair enough, I was going to give the God-King an update on his son’s place in the afterlife, but that can wait.
Skovald says: I know what you’re trying to do, and I don’t care. I know what happened to my family and I have people searching for them. Leave them. Cover our tracks and ensure he doesn’t find us again.

They turned away, but immediately after, Sol teleported Arthak out of the forcecage. Iskar informed Arthak he had one chance to walk away, and he said that he would ensure it didn’t disqualify him.

Iskar says: Please do this, I don’t want to waste my time ensuring you don’t find your way back to your friends. They don’t need my help for the rest of this challenge.

Arthak shrugged.

Arthak Saurfang says: You, Iskar, I will save the aggravation. That being said, if you have nothing else to do for a while, it appears neither do I.
Iskar says: Very well, as long as you let me put you back in the cage.
Arthak Saurfang says: Fair enough.

Iskar reached out and teleported Arthak back into the force cage. It severed his connection with Sol, and Iskar squatted down with a grin.

Iskar says: I realized we never had the opportunity to speak! But, you know, we may have more opportunity if your companions prove successful.
Arthak Saurfang says: I hope so. And agreed, I understand your focus lies elsewhere, but it’s nice to converse.
Iskar says: So then, warchief, what do you want to speak of?
Arthak Saurfang says: What else? The future.

However, what Arthak did not see was the subtlest of incantations as, hidden from the eye, the real Iskar left via [Mislead].

Zar’Kaa and Sol continued to try and track more creatures, and Symma used her mimicry to try and mimic the call of a wounded animal.

They managed to track down the cat, Ketlingr, and they caught sight of the creature deftly stalking through the underbrush. It came rushing at Symma, but it was a counter ambush and Seria and Nyxxa and Ketlingr was successfully slain.

However, a mental force washed over them, and the corpse disappeared. It felt like they needed to find a way out of… something. There was a strange collective vision over all of them.

But they were able to escape, and they realized something had tried to deceive them with illusion magic to waste their time. It was a strange hallucinatory experience to make them think they were hunting some sort of game that they actually weren’t. They could only assume it was being conjured by Iskar.

However, it was too realistic, and they were able to hunt better and faster than they had before.

The group then focused on trying to get as much smaller game as possible.

Odyn announced the ending of the hunt, and they offered thanks to the great beasts of the hunt as they were restored to life on the respective sides of the competing teams to show the weight of each side’s glory. The warband had many notable hunts on their side.

It seems that the other team got Habrok the owl, Garos the worm, Hyrtir the stag, and Vetholnir the hawk, as well as a number of small game.

Odyn says: Much glory has gone to both sides, yet when I look at the beasts that have been felled, I see a difference. Quantity and quality alone! Tell me, my valarjar, who amongst you believes the glory of this hunt should go to the team led by Skovald?

There was some cheering.

Odyn says: Now allow me to hear the glory awarded to the champions from afar!

The cheering was louder, and a grin appeared on Odyn’s face.

Odyn says: It is clear to me that our champions from afar have earned the victory of the first challenge. Well done, each and every one of you! But our contests have not yet finished!

January 1st

Odyn clapped his hands twice, and they were consumed in bright light. They were no longer in the elysian fields, but they were instead in an open-air arena. The sky glowed so brightly it became painful to look at as golden feathers drifted downward, and an immaculate, massive val’kyr materialized. She had skin of golden marble and wings of glowing gold in gilded armor.

Eyir says: Greetings, champions. I am Eyir, first amongst the val’kyr. ‘Tis I whom shall arbitrate the second of the contests, the contest of wisdom. Both of your teams shall compete against each other to test your cunning, presences, and foresight. Only by working together can you hope to overcome these trials. There are five stages. The first shall be a direct contest between each of your groups. I shall speak words of obfuscated wisdom, and the members of your groups will bring clarity to my statements. The first amongst either of your groups to speak truth shall earn favor. Seven favors can be earned through this contest, and only by answering swiftly may you do so. Amongst your group shall each soul answer but two of these riddles. After presenting two answers, never again shall they speak during this trial. And do not attempt to elucidate for your companions, or you shall lose the right to my favor. An answer shall be counted, be it correct or incorrect, so answer carefully, for each of your teams only fourteen answers shall you present. Every favor you earn now will aid you in the trials to come. Are thou prepared?

Everyone nodded.

Eyir says: I have cities, but no citizens. I have mountains, but no stones. I have water, but no fish. What am I?

There was a pause.

Skovald says: A map!
Eyir says: That is correct.

A golden feather appeared in Skovald’s hand.

Eyir says: I belong to you, yet I am used by everyone else. What am I?
Rak'Symma says: A name.

Eyir said she was correct, and they were presented with another feather.

Eyir says: I have much to tell those who look to me, and yet, I have no thoughts to share, nor means to share them. What am I?
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: A book.

She was correct, and they were presented with another feather.

Eyir says: I dance to no rhythm, but I fall all of the time, yet I am never hurt. What am I?
Sol says: A leaf?
Iskar says: Snow!

The favor went to Iskar.

Eyir says: I live only where there is light, yet am slain by its shine. What am I?
Arthak Saurfang says: Shadow.

A feather appeared in Arthak’s hand.

Eyir says: I am there in the emptiness, and absent in a crowd. I can speak every language you know. What am I?
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Silence?
Zar'Kaa says: Pity?
Jubei'thos says: An echo!

Eyir awarded the feather to Jubei’thos.

Eyir says: We hurt without moving. We poison without touching. We bear the truth and the lies. We are not to be judged by our size. What am I?
Velhari says: Words.

A fourth favor was given to the other side.

Eyir says: Well done, all of you. Hold close to your favors, as they will guide you on your paths.

She lifted off, and two doors manifested, inviting them to pass through.

Eyir says: This will be a race. The first group to complete their trials and pass through the final door will find themselves back here in this very arena, and that group shall return successful from the contest of wisdom. I will guide both your groups along the path, but you shall not know the challenges until you see them. You must divine their natures and overcome these challenges. Any questions before you begin?

There were none, and Eyir announced they could begin. They rushed through the door and before them were six banners. In front of each of them were stone slabs that awaited them.

Eyir says: Three gates lie before thee, each opened by a code phrase that must be divined through these runes. Discover these phrases and the gates shall open, but for each failed divination, a flag shall be incinerated. Burn all and the gateway will be barred unless you use a favor. Doing so will grant you six additional banners that can be burnt, and know that the banners will be shared between the rune words. You must work together to divine these phrases. Work with haste, champions!

They started to say runes, and slowly, words began to appear. One banner, however, burned.

Then a second banner burned.

Arthak realized the first phrase was Gungnir, Spear of the All Father, and the first gate lifted and allowed them through to another gate, which had another phrase on it.

Eyir says: Your next rune word is one that deals with titles.

They again began to guess runes. When they were compelled to guess the first phrase, the third banner burned. However, then Sol spoke up that it was Prime Designate of the Manifold, and the gate opened.

Eyir says: The third and final key is deities.

As they guessed runes, Lantresor stated the last word was Azeroth, and he was correct, though a banner burned because it wasn’t the full phrase.

Arthak guessed it was Surtr, Enemy of Azeroth, and they were able to complete the challenge with two banners remaining. The gate opened into a wide field that was filled with squares, and on the other side was a pedestal.

Eyir says: Before you lies a field of runes. All that you must do is reach the other side, and place your hand upon the pedestal. However, let it be known, that there are many hidden runes that, when triggered, will spell an end to your journey. As you navigate across, you’ll find information and details. You must use your deductive reasoning to deactivate the runes safely, so you may walk to the other side and activate the pedestal. Only one of you may take to the field.
