Chapter Three: The Scales Tip

Falstad had embarked down to Grim Batol to continue aiding in the struggle of fully reclaiming the keep, and his presence here was ultimately the reason that young Gilveradin Windrunner found himself in the area of the dwarven fortress. However, he was quite surprised to see the young Farstrider so far south, not to mention the strange missive that Gil had sent ahead with one of the gryphon rider patrols: that he wished to find the home of the Scholarly One.

Falstad spoke to Gil in private, and it quickly became evident that the elf's suspicion had been right. Falstad, too, was one of the dragonsworn, and the dwarf admitted that he was at Grim Batol on dragon business as much as he was dwarf business. He expressed that he was unable to leave the fortress to aid in the war effort up north, as the Red Dragonflight was recovering from the loss of the Prime Consort Tyranastrasz, and the queen had called her remaining consorts to her.

One of those consorts happened to be the thane of Grim Batol, Yrden, who Falstad admitted was truly named Yrdenastrasz.

As the pair entered the deeper reaches of Grim Batol, Falstad continued to explain that Yrdenastrasz had been one of the reasons they were even able to reclaim Grim Batol, and Yrden had been the one to induct Falstad himself as a dragonsworn. Thus, as part of his duty to the flight, he was serving as thane in Yrden's stead, and with that responsibility, also guarding the nest of red dragon eggs that were located deep beneath Grim Batol. Thus, it was truly for that reason that Falstad couldn't leave, as much as he would have liked to aid Gil.

Gilveradin understood, and Falstad welcomed the elf's aid at Grim Batol for a few days before Gil left to return north.

During their discussion, Gilveradin also revealed that his twin sister, Velameestra Windrunner, had found out about Gil's own status as a dragonsworn and had likely put several other things together. This was confirmed as, not even a few weeks later, Falstad received a sending from the Windrunner mage informing him that Thalorian Dawnseeker, the father of the young elven woman who was in the care of the red dragons after her resurrection, Thal'ena Dawnseeker, had been slain, and she hoped that Falstad would be able to deliver the news to Thal'ena.

Falstad assured Velameestra that he would be able to, and if she happened to hear tidings of Thal'ena's mother as well, to please let him know.
