Dwarves

Dwarves are small but sturdy being that mostly inhabit the mountainous region of Khaz Modan. They are shorter than humans, but broader, and they are well-known for their compact strenth and endurance.

History

The dwarves are descended from humanoid creatures of living stone that were originally created by the Titans in order to aid in the shaping of the world of Azeroth after the Titans were gone. It was the responsibility of these beings—who were simply referred to as the earthen—to shape the earth itself and the underground below the surface. However, when the Old Gods created the Curse of Flesh ad mutated the earthen into the vicious and bestial troggs, they were ultimately sealed away within the city of Uldaman.

To combat the Curse of Flesh, the Titans modified the original design of the earthen. As a result, while they were still susceptible to the curse, the modified earthen did not transform into troggs but instead became dwarves. While their stone bodies turned into flesh, they retained their mental affinity for the working of the earth as well as their cognitive abilities. While it was not the outcome the Titans had wanted, it was acceptable, as they would be able to continue to carry out the purpose the earthen were designed for.

During the War of the Ancients, the Sundering caused by the destruction of the Well of Eternity was felt by the altered earthen who endured the pain of the earth as if it were their own. In order to withstand the agony caused by the splitting of the continent, the earthen retreated to their places of origin—Uldum, Uldaman, and Ulduar—where they fell into a deep hibernation that spanned almost 8,000 years. Ultimately, when they awoke, the powers they held over the earth had lessened, and most had completely succumbed to the Curse of Flesh as their strong, rocky hide had weakened and mutated into skin. The awakened earthen, which were now fully dwarves, left the Titan cities of their origin and ultimately built the city of Ironforge in Dun Morogh.
