The Demon Soul, formerly known as the Dragon Soul, was an artifact of great power created by Deathwing shortly before the War of the Ancients. It appeared as a featureless golden disk on a heavy chain, and it was a talisman of great power that could be used to destroy or enslave dragons.
History
Sometime shortly before the War of the Ancients, the Earthwader Neltharion created an artifact of incredible power that was fastened to a chain forged of elementium. The golden, perfect disk was infused with the power of the Old Gods as well as the essence of both dragons and demons. Neltharion sought to use it to control the other dragonflights and make himself a god.
However, during an accidental cave-in, Neltharion discovered that even the smallest bit of his body could damage the Soul, thus he took great care to avoid damaging it. He revealed his creation to his fellow aspects and convinced them to give their own essences to empower the artifact, which made them and their flight unable to damage the disc. However, during the invasion of the Burning Legion, Neltharion revealed his madness and used the Dragon Soul to wreck havoc on demon and Azerothian alike, slaughtering thousands and demanding all bow before him. Malygos and the blue dragonflight attempted to stop Neltharion, but the majority of the flight was executed, save the Blue Aspect himself. It was only the unexpected intervention of Korialstrasz that broke Neltharion's concentration and forced him to flee with the Soul.
However, the power of the Soul started to rip Neltharion's very body apart. He had his servants bolt massive adamantium plates to his body to keep the destructive power at bay, but he was completely driven to madness, and the artifact became known as the Demon Soul. The orc Broxigar, Korialstrasz, and the night elf druid Malfurion Stormrage managed to steal the artifact, but Malfurion was captured by soldiers of Queen Azshara led by his own brother, Illidan, who had agreed to obtain the artifact to allow Sargeras entry into Azeroth.
The Soul was used as part of a portal to be opened in the depths of the Well of Eternity. However, the Soul's spellwork was disrupted, and the portal was reversed to instead pull the Legion out of Azeroth, but in the process it caused the beginning of the Sundering. After the Sundering of the World, Malfurion and the remaining four Aspects placed a spell on the Demon Soul that would prevent Deathwing from ever using it again, and then hid the disk in a secret place where only the remaining Aspects could find it.
However, thousands of years passed, and Deathwing, while maintain the guise of Daval Prestor, found the hiding place of the Demon Soul in the Cavern of the Soul in the Redridge Mountains. Realizing that it had been enchanted so no dragon could touch it, the fallen aspect hatched a scheme to draw mortals to the location through the kidnapping of Arthas Menethil, the king of Lordaeron. The red dragon guardian of the soul was turned into a bestial monster through the use of a feeblemind spell, and it was orchestrated to look as if the red dragonflight had orchestrated the capture of the king.
In reality, Deathwing simply wanted to manufacture a reason for his human son, Victor Prestor, and his companions to arrive so that he could be used to control the Soul on Deathwing's behalf—while painting the Prestors as the heroes that saved the king of Lordaeron.
However, it quickly became obvious that Uther Menethil and his companions had spoken to other red dragons and would not believe the story he had woven. In addition, Gilveradin Windrunner had claimed the Soul from its resting place and it was in his possession. Gilveradin fled to preserve the soul, and Daval Prestor awakened the influence of the heart of his fallen son, Nefarian, that had been implanted within Victor, using the influence to turn Victor on his friends. He then began the collapse of the cavern, while he himself pursued Gilveradin.
It was his intention that Victor and his other servants would slay the party, and the plan could proceed as intended—though the would-be heroes would have just been tragically lost in the cave-in.
However, Gilveradin managed to successfully hide from Daval Prestor, and he was forced to retreat with his son once Victor made it known that the red dragonflight would likely be arriving soon, as the party had been in contact with Korialstrasz and had given the young hatchling of the Soul's guardian an opening to flee and inform him of what had happened. They took Arthas and left.
Korialstrasz arrived soon after and found Gilveradin alive, though it appeared the rest of his companions had perished in the cave-in. Recognizing that the Soul was no longer safe, guardianship of it was entrusted to Gilveradin and a team of other dragonsworn from the flights, with the express goal of the Demon Soul being destroyed once and for all.
