Darnassian
Darnassian is an ancient tongue developed by the Kaldorei of Kalimdor. It is a common language known by many denizens of the ancient continent, and gave birth to many divergent languages.
Grammar Rules
Singular and Plural
There are multiple ways to make a word plural based on how it is spelled, and how the plural is added may change the implication of the word.
- Del (Ancient Keeper) -> Delar(Ancient Keepers)
- Dor (Land/tree) -> Doras (Lands/trees)
- Ri (Caretaker) -> Ril (Caretakers)
- Eldre (Elder) -> Eldrei (Elders/Elites)
- Eldre (Elder) -> Eldren (Ancestors)
- Kaldorei (child of the stars) -> Kaldorei (children of the stars)
Verb Forms
The tense of Darnassian verbs is altered by appending suffixes to the ends of words. This completely eliminates the use of certain words such as "is", "are", "was", "were", and likewise to use the tense of the verb. The noun, such as "I" or "We" is then attached to the end of the verb using an apostrophe to create a single-word sentence.
Tense | Suffix |
---|---|
Infinitive | -ore |
Imperative | -u |
Past | -il |
Present | -as |
Gerund | -ah |
Future tense adds a "Va".
These suffixes can be seen in action using the following subject and object:
- O - "I" or "me"
- Bandore- "To prepare"
The suffix "ore" is removed and a "u" is added, and the two are combined to mean the following:
- Bandu'o - "I prepare"
The tense can be specified and clarified by attaching the listed suffixes to the verb:
- Bandil'o - "I prepared"
- Bandas'o - "I am presently preparing"
- Va Bandu'o - "I will prepare"
A verb can be distinctly made into a noun by adding the suffix "ah", to distinguish it from the root word being used in a name.
- Bandah'tolah - preparatory work
"Shi" (Or just L if the verb starts with "A")can be added as a suffix before the verb to turn the meaning into it's negative.
- Shi'bandas'ande - "You are not prepared"
