December 9th
It was around 5pm in the afternoon, and the sun was starting to go down. Revil Kost went to return to his chapel, and the group were left to figure out what they were doing next. Vel asked Luma how exactly they had known Amber Kearnen, and they explained the shooting competition that had happened.
It also occurred to Luma that the dwarf in charge of the shooting range might have also been SI:7.
Liiraluma says: I was going to hold on to that favor, but… it seemed important.
Vel agreed that it proved useful, and Gil said that it likely saved them a fight.
Uther looked over at Vel.
Uther Menethil says: Do you think there’s useful information to be gained about that sword if I were to spar with Varian?
Vel hesitated.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …if… he’s using that sword for a sparring match I have other concerns.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: If that sword is cursed in the right way, I could see it.
Uther Menethil says: It seems he’s looking for any excuse to be violent right now.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …You’re right. Just be careful.
Uther Menethil says: Of course!
Luma set off to work with Teemo on the plane, while Uther went to seek out Varian. The former king was incredibly busy, and Uther was given the run-around that resulted in him waiting a good few hours. Eventually, he spied Varian as he was making his way off the Juggernaut. Varian furrowed his brow in Uther’s direction.
Varian Wrynn says: Uther, what are you doing here?
Uther Menethil says: Asking a favor if you’ll lend me your ear.
Varian Wrynn says: I’ll bite. What is it?
Uther Menethil says: It’s been… two years? Since the Grand Melee. If you have the time, I’d like to cross weapons with you again.
Varian considered for a moment.
Varian Wrynn says: I suppose you caught me at a decent enough time. I’ve just finished taking care of other business, so I suppose it’s as good a time as any.
Uther Menethil says: Excellent! Is there a training yard somewhere here?
Varian Wrynn says: Something like that. Follow me.
Gil happened to catch Uther near the end of the wait, and he opted to join them along with a few others to watch. Varian led Uther onto the ship where there were a few training dummies that were out of use. Varian said the ship was sturdy enough to handle a competition. He asked Uther if he had any rules in mind, and Uther smirked.
Uther Menethil says: The match stops when one yields.
Varian smirked in turn, and Uther hefted up the Silver Hand, hoping to prompt Varian to go for his shiny new toy. Both Gil and Uther noticed that Varian didn’t even consider a training sword in the first place, he instead had gone straight for Apocalypse.
For the first few exchanges, there were a lot of throwing test strikes. But as the strikes increased in intensity, Varian forced Uther into a cross-block. However, he planted his feet and was able to shove Varian backwards. The former king got a very serious look on his face.
This was not a safe sparring match. Uther had seen Varian fight for years, and he had always been the type of man to take things seriously, but he had a glint in his eye that indicated he was having a good time even if he was losing. However, in this moment, that glint was not there.
As Uther pushed Varian back, the man went on the offensive. He was faster and more agile than Uther, and he was wearing less-encumbering equipment. Uther had a shield that was helpful when it was usable, but Varian got on Uther’s opposite side and used a series of feints and impeccable technique. Uther started to feel the fatigue, and then Varian lunged forward. Uther went to block, but Varian spun and knocked the hammer away before ripping the shield off Uther’s arm.
Varian pressed the advantage and came in with a furious onslaught. Uther was forced to use the haft of the Silver Hand to block, but then he found Varian’s rhythm and he moved his hand to catch on the head of the hammer to catch Varian from behind. As Varian spun around, he stopped the Silver Hand right in front of Varian’s face – a kill shot for all intents.
Varian froze, and the crowd cheered as a victor was clearly determined. Uther chuckled.
Uther Menethil says: Sharp as ever, your majesty.
A pang of rage crossed over Varian’s eyes, and then he took a swing at Uther. In that instant, Uther recognized it was a death blow maneuver. Uther ducked back, but the blade sliced into Uther’s arm in a place where, had Uther been slower, he might have lost his arm. The blade was buried into the wood of the ship.
The crowd went fully silent.
Uther looked down at his arm, and then back at Varian.
Uther Menethil says: First blood seems as good as any to call it. I yield.
Varian was breathing a bit heavy, and he looked at the wound, then at the silent crowd, and turned and walked away without a word. Gil hurried over to Uther, who was looking at his wound. The weapon bit deeper than normal, and it seemed it had a toxic element to it.
Uther moved to try and heal the wound, but it didn’t heal.
Uther Menethil says: …Well. This is not going to be a pleasant evening.
Gil didn’t think the toxic effect was not permanent, but it seemed to be fully resistant to magical healing.
One of the other lieutenants stepped forward and started to shoo the onlookers away. He looked over at the gash in the deck of the ship and ordered someone to get Blackfuse over to patch up the hole. Varian, however, had disappeared back into the ship.
Uther Menethil says: Did I at least look cool?
He looked at Gil.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Do you mean the fight or the…
He gestured at the wound.
Uther Menethil says: The fight! This is terrible, I don’t want this anymore.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: We need someone better than you or me. Lets get this taken care of with our priest friend. But yeah, your fight looked cool.
Uther Menethil says: Very good.
The duo returned to Revil Kost and explained the situation, and as the priest looked it over he said it was good they came to him so he could see what the blade could do in person.
Revil Kost says: It seems like the wound was poisoned. It looks like there’s no disease, but I presume that’s due to the protections of the Light.
Uther Menethil says: I also drink lots of juice.
Revil Kost says: Good. It’s important to have a balanced diet.
Uther looked over at Gil, clearly having meant the comment as a joke.
Revil Kost says: I’m assuming you don’t come down with illnesses often? Good. At least you’re resistant to the source of the disease if its this blade… I’d like to examine you and your allies periodically to make sure that doesn’t change. But with some rest I think this wound will start to recover. It seems this injury is… denying additional healing methods.
Uther Menethil says: What happens if you hit someone without divine protection?
Revil Kost says: I imagine it was due to your quick thinking that the blade avoided a more direct strike. There are dark magics, but they sap one’s vitality. They are seen in undead creatures, much like your companion when she bit me. This one is different. It’s not as if the vitality is drained, it’s like it just refuses to heal. The magic that you used on me earlier would have no effect on something like this. But… if you give yourself time to rest, it will eventually repair itself and become receptive to magical healing. For the time being, you’re going to need to grin and bear the pain. This is… an important thing we’ve discovered. More pieces of this puzzle.
He looked over at Gil, seemingly looking for something, but then he lost interest as he had not found anything he was looking for.
Revil Kost says: Monitor the injury. If it rejects healing by the morning, let me know.
Uther Menethil says: I’ll be sure to stop by. In the meantime, I’ve earned a drink and a nap.
Revil handed Uther some fresh water and offered the spare cots if he needed one.
Meanwhile, Vel had gone to find Surena Caledon. She was able to find her much easier than Uther was able to find Varian. She was led to a workshop that appeared to be on the Juggernaut, and a guard knocked on the door and informed her that the outsider mage wanted to speak with her. Caledon invited Vel in, and she was greeted by a mage workshop. There was a cauldron actively bubbling as well reagents of various types of demons and other creatures. There was a sayaad wing, a skull of a felhunter, and various tomes, one of which seemed to be covered with human skin.
There was a bed and a desk as well, which Caledon had stood up from. There also appeared to be a teleportation circle in the center of the room, but there was a simple ward that made it difficult to focus on – the equivalent of a privacy curtain that made a circle difficult to memorize unless fully focused on.
Surena Caledon says: How can I help you, miss Windrunner you said, correct?
Vel confirmed and she explained she was there to follow up with her given fellow mages were something of a rarity amongst the Defias. She asked if Surena was familiar with a man named Colyn Clessington, and Surena confirmed she was, though she imagined most around Stormwind were. Vel noted he had been a rather generous donor to the Defias.
Surena’s brow raised and she mused she was curious how Vel had that information, and the vampyr simply replied she was quite certain she was familiar with the types of connections mages were wont to have. Her eyes flickered over to the felhunter skull as if to punctuate the point, and Vel also noted that she knew that Clessington had a recent meeting not far from the stronghold, namely in a tower that she had reason to believe belonged to Surena.
Surena Caledon says: Well, you are well-informed, aren’t you, miss Windrunner. I don’t know how you know this information… and I would very much like to know so I can ensure our security isn’t compromised. But, all of that aside, yes, you’re correct. Clessington has been responsible for aiding the Brotherhood, and he did have a meeting in the tower nearby. It was a standard affair that I oversaw for the purposes of… assuaging him that his investments were paying off in ways he found suitable. He seemed satisfied.
Vel said she was hoping to get Surena’s permission to visit said tower, specifically because there was reason to believe Clessington was more than he appeared. However, she was, of course, willing to make a deal in exchange. She asked if Surena knew of the city known as Venetia, and Surena confirmed she did, though the stories sounded like pipe dreams and she didn’t know how such a city could hope to function.
Velameestra Windrunner says: How would you like to see for yourself?
Surena’s eye twinkled.
Surena Caledon says: It exists?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ve been there. And it does function. In its own way.
Surena accepted the deal, and confirmed the tower was under her care, but she was willing to show it to Vel in exchange for the knowledge to access the hidden city. Vel plucked a thought strand from her mind and turned it over to Surena, in turn showing her the passage that she used to reach the city. Surena absorbed the thought strand, and she was clearly intrigued as the memory played back to her.
They decided to go to the tower immediately, and Vel informed Gil that she was going to investigate the tower, just to keep the group apprised of her location.
They arrived in a rather classical mage’s tower, and Surena welcomed Vel to her humble abode, though she was still thinking of a name for it. Vel said she had done good work, though Surena corrected she had yet to do much, as she was largely just cleaning up after her former master.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Generous of him to leave it to you.
Surena grinned.
Surena Caledon says: Yes, very generous.
It was evident that the other woman had likely done something to dispose of her prior mentor.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I take it you did not get along?
Surena Caledon says: Klaven Mortwake was a brilliant hedge-mage. He taught me everything I know. His knowledge of magic and alchemy was, as far as I’m concerned, unrivaled. He was also insane, and his experiments had long drawn the attention of SI:7. Once we agreed to start working with the Defias Brotherhood, it became a continued danger to security to leave him in charge. So, the tower formally known as Mortwake’s Tower is now under new management. I hope that’s not a problem?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Of course not. Why would it be?
Surena Caledon says: …Ah, well then I see we won’t have an issue.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The insane ones are always the brilliant ones, unfortunately.
Surena Caledon says: They are.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Where was it was Clessington met?
Surena Caledon says: There’s an audience chamber in the lower levels. It was where Mortwake would have most of his clandestine guests, and he had some very strange people, let me tell you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I can only imagine.
Surena led her down a flight of chairs, and they entered an audience chamber. As Vel looked around, she saw very simple decorations along with standing tables. There wasn’t much as far as seating, and it looked more like a wine-tasting than anything else. Vel asked what Surena’s prior mentor was serving his guests, and she explained that, seeing he was a gifted alchemist, it was there that some interested clients could sample his products or see demonstrations of their effects if they were more lasting.
She gestured at an area that more resembled a stage.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So he was a bit of a showman?
Surena Caledon says: Yes… that’s a good way to put it.
Vel moved slowly around the meeting chamber as she took it all in. She asked Surena if Clessington had happened to say what he was worried about his funding being used for.
Surena Caledon says: During the conversation I was present for, my mind was occupied. I’d only just liberated this tower, you see, and I was merely an aid providing a safe place for the meeting. The specifications took place between masters Varian and VanCleef. They didn’t speak plainly in ways I could understand, but he was very worried about time tables. He also said it was too dangerous for him to make visits in person from that time forward, and he’d be relying on magical means to check in rather than the in-person ones he had been priorly utilizing.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Has he been a long-time ally, then?
Surena Caledon says: It’s been some time, yes. At this point, more than a few months. He’d made two visits before then.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And he’s always been isolated to this meeting chamber?
Surena Caledon says: He’s seen other aspects of the tower… after the meetings with the Defias, yes, but before, I can’t tell you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He knew your mentor prior?
Surena Caledon says: He did. In fact, he was the one that introduced us to the idea of the Defias Brotherhood.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You don’t say…
Surena Caledon says: A meeting shortly after it was organized caught our attention. We saw an opportunity, and then after, *I* saw an opportunity. Before that he was one of my master’s clients. He does have a curiosity for magic oddities, so the rumors say.
Vel looked around the room and there didn’t seem to be many convention traps inside the tower. She saw a cabinet that appeared to be under the effects of an arcane lock, and she asked Surena if that was where her mentor had kept his wares. She confirmed, and offered to show Vel what was inside, though she noted the stock had largely waned. However, as Vel looked at the three remaining unlabeled vials, she realized they were identical in every single way to the poison that Zanzil had made that could raise someone into an obedient undead.
Vel’s brow raised.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He dabbled in necromancy?
Surena Caledon says: Among other things, yes. You can see his handiwork outside.
Vel moved over to a window and peered out to the surrounding grounds. There were several undead humans at various points of decay that were equipped with simple weapons and seemed to be guarding the outside of the tower.
Surena Caledon says: I believe he used those very tonics to create those. Unfortunately, they do not obey my commands. Seems they only obey the person that created them. But they are harmless enough, and they prevent others from getting too close. The ones that have survived, at least. I figured I’d make use of them until they collapse.
Velameestra Windrunner says: No reason not to. Was… master Clessington interested in those?
Surena Caledon says: I unfortunately cannot say. These servants–drones, as my master called them–predate us joining the Defias Brotherhood. I’m certain he saw them and likely asked about them, at the very least.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Were you aware he was a hedge-mage?
Surena Caledon says: I knew the rumors. I’d assume they were true given his peculiar history with my master. They likely had some sort of shared history, but I never cared to find out. Asking questions like that is how one can lose friends instead of make them.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Understandable.
She asked if Surena’s former master was one to keep a ledger of sales he made, and the other woman admitted he was that sort of insane, but unfortunately after his death it had all combusted and she had failed to make copies before it got to that stage.
Surena showed Vel around other parts of the tower and she saw another workshop with dragon bones and a preserved draconic heart, but it was nothing near what had been seen at the Tower of Il’galar under the purview of the mage in Onyxia’s employ.
Vel turned questions toward the sword that Varian was wielding, as well as the Dark Rider. Surena confirmed she had been able to look at the sword, and she noted it was a potent weapon, but she didn’t seem to be particularly keen to talk about the details. She also didn’t seem to be worried about the sword, but Vel couldn’t help but wonder if that was because the other woman had failed to pick up the severity of the curse on it. After all, minor curses were manageable, but most couldn’t read the nature of them.
She also explained that their attempts to get information out of the Dark Rider had extended from mind reading to charming to even planar binding. Ultimately the man’s mind was scrambled and a mess of fragments. It was like the fel had addled him, and even when charmed, he remained cryptic, as if a stronger influence overwrote any other magics that Surena was able to think of.
Surena Caledon says: Whatever was done to that man has twisted his very soul in a way that he could never be imprisoned by the compulsion of any other magic I could consider. I don’t even know if a wish could do it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: How fascinating…
Surena Caledon says: Whoever was responsible for twisting him like this… I don’t know. Their power must be unfathomable. Whatever person or place or thing led to that corruption is, in fact, quite fascinating.
Velameestra Windrunner says: What is it you’re trying to get from him? To learn who that person might be?
Surena Caledon says: The origin would be significant. He’s only ever mentioned a mistress… but I have to admit a professional curiosity. But his cryptic blurtings and ramblings have been useful. I’ve divined several instances of mutiny within the Brotherhood, and at least three instances of Stormwind guards that got too close for comfort. It’s also led us to three other Dark Riders that we dispatched. Unfortunately, none of them were carrying weapons nearly as useful as his.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Did you notice the disease that runs in his blood?
Surena paused.
Surena Caledon says: I… did not. I admit I don’t know much about biology. My master was an alchemist. While I have an understanding of it for the use of reagents in arcana, I have less specialization in the… human body.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Understandable. Though, perhaps a missed opportunity. Biology is fascinating. But there is a disease that he carries. One that appears to be spreading.
Surena Caledon says: …Interesting.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Which leads to concerns about his presence in the Defias, of course. Sick soldiers are not very good soldiers.
Surena Caledon says: A fair concern. But how do you know he’s the source of it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I don’t. It’s all conjecture, of course. But… it runs quite strong.
Vel produced one of the vials of blood she had collected from the man and offered it to Surena.
Velameestra Windrunner says: If you’d like to take a closer look yourself.
Surena Caledon says: I’d gladly take that sample.
Vel thanked Surena for humoring her, who apologized she wasn’t able to find what she was looking for, but Vel assured her she had at least gotten some additional context. She suggested that if Surena did find her way up to Venetia to look up a man named Ebonlocke, as Vel believed they would have similar interests. Surena said she’d be sure to do so.
Surena Caledon says: If you got into the city, there’s a location you might be interested in. It’s an inn called the Slaughtered Lamb in the mage quarter. It is an inn and tavern, but there are individuals that sometimes meet there. If you want to see their special stock and meet some like-minded individuals, go to their bartender–a man named Jarel Moor–and order a sin and tonic. It’s a bit on the nose, but it’s a favorite of his.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ll be sure to try it.
Surena Caledon says: My master’s master still works out of there. He and I haven’t spoken for a time. He’s a good man, much unlike my former master. His name is Gakin. He has a great deal of respect for the Slaughtered Lamb, but he’s far from the only person.
They had meandered to the entrance of the tower, and the door started to open. A living, burly man with a scraggly beard and wild hair stood in it. He had several axes on his belt, and his arm bore a Defias armband. He looked dangerous, and he was holding a pile of firewood.
Caledon smiled as the man peeked out from around the firewood.
Rugged Man says: I didn’t know you’d be here, hunny.
Surena Caledon says: Erlan, I was just having a friend over.
Erlan Drudgemoor says: Ah. Don’t let me bother you, ma’am. Erlan Drudgemoor. I’m in charge of security here. If you’ll excuse me. I was just collecting some firewood.
Surena Caledon says: Thank you, hunny.
The man got a dumb smile on his face.
Erlan Drudgemoor says: I’ll see you later. It’s nice to meet you, miss.
He moved around the two women and headed deeper into the tower to drop off the firewood. Vel watched him go.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s always good to find good help.
Surena smiled.
Surena Caledon says: It is. People you can trust.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Isn’t that the challenge.
Surena chuckled.
Surena Caledon says: Having trouble with it yourself?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The world is a large place and everyone has different views of it. But… you find them where you can.
Surena got a fond smile as she looked after Erlan.
Surena Caledon says: My own advice is find one that wears his intentions on his sleeve.
Vel had noted the Defias Brotherhood bandana on the man’s arm. Surena took Vel back to the Deadmines, and Vel gave the other woman the cost of the teleportation circle spells back and further. Surena expressed her gratitude for everything by allowing Vel to memorize both her own teleportation circle and the one at the tower, with the request that Vel just let her know before she shows up at the tower. A request Vel was more than glad to oblige.
Gil had gone to Luma and the Blackfuse to get some armor, and after some haggling and the offer of a magma dragon breath pouch, he was able to get a great deal on a rush job for armor that would be gotten to him the next day.
That evening, Vel shifted into an animal form and slipped away into the Defias base. It was far from bustling. She was noticed by a few watch people, but they didn’t care enough to pursue her as there were so many rats. A gnoll guard licked its lips and considered chasing her, but it decided not to.
She made her way to where the ships were docked. The Juggernaut was still moored, but there were flickering torches from the watchmen, and she heard the chittering bats overhead. She claimed control over a portion of the swarm of bats and used them to serve as a distraction as they started to swoop down at the guards.
She heard the sound of things dropping into the water as some of the bats were knocked out of the air, but there was also a much larger splash as one of the guards tumbled over the edge with a shout instead, and several of his fellows rushed over to help him back on board. It gave her an easy opening to slip onto the massive ship.
Vel shifted into mist and slipped through the cracks where the canons jutted out. She found herself in a munitions bay, and she continued through the room where the “throne” was. She continued her way to a door that was locked and shut. She got the sense that this room was one she was barred from.
She tried to look under the gap in the door in her rat form. It was a very narrow field of view, and she could only see the legs of a chair and evidence of a desk. She sensed the door had an arcane lock on it and other protections likely added by Surena. She also saw evidence of a bed, and there was no sign of the sword, but there was strewn clothing and she had heard the soft sound of breathing.
She left as swiftly as she had come, recognizing there was no further she could go.
December 10th
The next day, Luma and the Blackfuse finished up the project. The goblins were amazed at the time dilation magic Luma utilized, and Luma then got their cut of the income. A round of drinks was shared before they slept the last few hours.
Helix Gearbreaker greeted Gil when he arrived to pick up his armor, and he was happy to inform him the work had been completed as promised. He invited Luma to reveal the completed commission.
It was a very goblin-esque construction in Gil’s preferred colors of red and gold. It had optional goggles and a hood that Gil could use as he wished. Helix said they added one extra little feature to the armor as they had a bit of extra time.
Helix Gearbreaker says: First off, we made sure it had some primo environmental applications to help you in excessively warm and cold environments. You’ll just want to make sure it doesn’t go… they can sorta help, but you want to make sure the armor is nice and lubricated. Just a little drop here and there once a day, you should be good.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: The way you said that makes me worried.
Helix Gearbreaker says: No, for real, it’s fine. Some of the fans will get gummed up. We got it a bit smoother. We included a bonus can of oil. But, my personal favorite. You can change the name, but we’ve called the piece of work the GTFO, the Goblin Terrain Fuselage Outfit. Wanna see how it works?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: You have me incredibly curious.
Helix Gearbreaker says: Everyone back up! Real far! Okay. Activate one of the shot bots!
A goblin-sized bot that looked like a goblin walked over. Helix explained the armor had a special condition, and he said it was good Gil was a bit flame resistant. He told the bot to go ham on the armor, and the goblin bot started to punch the armor. Helix goaded the bot to hit it harder. But finally, the bot lucked out, and the armor exploded. The goblin bot went flying backwards, and then also exploded.
Helix Gearbreaker says: And that’s why we call it the GTFO! Whenever someone gets too close, the fuselage detonates and incinerates everything around you in the process!
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Including me.
Helix Gearbreaker says: Technically! But you’ll be fine, you said you was fire resistant!
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I’m not concerned but… you did this all in one day. How…
Helix Gearbreaker says: We used a bit of that breath pouch you gave us. There’s a limited amount of the stuff in the armor. You should feel lucky if it goes off more than three or four times if it runs out. Then you gotta refill the armor. It’s 100 percent guaranteed safe! It’ll never explode from anything else! You can walk into the Firelands itself and it won’t explode. Probably.
Gil tried it on and it fit like a glove and was very cool.
Uther went to Revil Kost and the wound had stopped hurting. But it still rejected magic healing, and only natural healing appeared to affect it. Vel knew there was a type of weapon known as weapons of wounding, which could only be regained through rest, not magic or regeneration. This appeared to be a cousin.
However, Revil Kost was nursing a bite wound, as Mardigan had not taken well to the Ritual of Balance. The other man was sleeping and Revil hoped that he could help him through the rest of it with his tonics, but it appeared the young man had a lot of baggage to work through.
They opted to leave Teemo back to work on the plane, as well as Elissa to offer backup to her and Valeera, and so Elissa could work with the people of Moonbrook more.
Vel got a sending from Alleria.
Alleria Windrunner [sending]: Hey, Vel, just letting you know we just made it to Stormwind. Turalyon called in a few favors. Let me know when you arrive, I’ll meet up with you.
Velameestra Windrunner says [sending]: If you get somewhere discrete, we can come to you.
Luma said goodbye to Teemo by her nickname, “Shortling,” and Teemo responded back with “Streetlamp”, though she quickly asked if “Streetlight” was better. They decided to workshop the name, and Teemo also threw out “Tall Order”, which the goblin admitted she sort of liked. Teemo waved them off and headed back toward the goblin camp.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So…Streetlight?
Uther Menethil says: I rather liked Tall Order.
Liiraluma says: Does it roll off the tongue, though? That’s the thing about a good nickname.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I didn’t realize it required this much thought behind it.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I think nicknames just organically happen and then stick.
Liiraluma says: Since shortling did happen, Teemo has been trying very hard.
Vel put a seeming over the group and scryed on her aunt, which gave them an easy gateway into Stormwind. She waited in an alleyway, and the four of the group materialized next to her. Alleria smiled as she stood up from where she was leaning against a wall.
Alleria Windrunner says: Welcome to the big city, everyone.
She quickly looked over the group and seemed satisfied that no one looked any worse for wear. Everyone was disguised as either elves or humans, with Luma simply being a notably tall, androgynous-looking elf. They quickly exchanged updates, and Alleria relayed that things were tense up north, but nothing catastrophic had occurred. Turalyon and Arator were meeting with some of Turalyon’s fellows at the church. Vel said it was nice that Arator had come as well.
Vel explained matters with the Defias Brotherhood, and that they had opted to start setting up some groundwork in the city itself. Though Alleria pointed out that if things went poorly, they at least had options.
She held out a wanted poster, one of many that was posted around the city, which had both Varian and VanCleef’s faces on it as well as details on a reward for their capture and additional rewards of 1 gold piece for each Defias bandana provided (with notes that there would be fines for forgeries).
Vel noted that it seemed Edwin being taken in by SI:7 wasn’t publicized, as Edwin was still wanted, which was good for them. Alleria asked what their plans were, and Vel gave a quick run-down of their potential contacts within the city, with their first step being to meet up with Samia and Reginald Windsor.
Vel asked if Turalyon and Arator would be meeting with them later, and Alleria admitted she was fairly certain they would be busy most of the day, as Turalyon was in Stormwind as much to deal with the schism in the church as he was concerning matters about Prestor. However, Alleria and Vel agreed they would probably give the cathedral itself a wide berth.
At that moment, Gil got a sending from Samia to confirm they were in the city, but unfortunately it seemed her old office had been foreclosed because she had disappeared for the better part of a year. Windsor had allowed Samia to stay on his couch in the interim, as they had found an apartment not far from where her office was. He had some friends that were willing to give him a good rate.
The group headed off toward Old Town through the Trade District. They passed a bank, an active auction, a lot of store fronts, and far more guards than normal. They laid low and took their time so they were better able to blend in. Luma was disguised as a very tall, androgynous high elf, while the others were either human or elves of reasonable height.
They passed through a tunnel and they started to see much older buildings. It was something of a historic district, and both Vel and Alleria got a chill as they walked over the running water of the canal. There were a few more dwarves in Old Town, though not as many as the Dwarven District.
Old Town was largely residential, and Uther was able to take point and navigate the district as he was at least somewhat familiar with Stormwind. However, something caught their attention. There was a figure wearing some surprisingly light clothing for the time of year. They had a simple green tunic and a green scarf with shoulder-length black hair. She had a hefty warhammer on her back and she was fairly muscular, and there was a heavy tome dangling from her belt.
She was knocking on a door.
Athletic Woman says: Hello? Is anyone in there?
Her back was to them. Nearby, a man in a heavy leather jacket with a sea shell necklace and red hair stood. He looked bored and annoyed as he waited, his arms up behind his head.
Roguish Man says: Knock harder love, I’m sure they haven’t heard you yet.
Athletic Woman says: Do you really think I’m not knocking hard enough?
Roguish Man says: I was being facetious, dear. I don’t think anyone is home.
He gestured to a writ on the window that said “foreclosed, for sale next year”.
Athletic Woman says: Why didn’t you tell me? Now I look like a fool.
On the building, it looked like a sign was taken down, but it looked to be Samia’s former office. They also recognized the woman. It was Taelia Fordragon, the daughter of Bolvar Fordragon, and Anduin’s cousin, as her mother was the same princess of Stormwind that Varian was accused of killing. She was around Uther’s age.
The man with her appeared to be Kul Tiran, but he was not recognized.
Taelia Fordragon says: I swear this sis the address. Is she really not here?
Roguish Man says: I don’t think you’re going to find her. But we might be able to figure out where she has gone. Though of course…
Taelia Fordragon says: Yes, I know she doesn’t work for free, I’m aware.
Roguish Man says: I’m really starting to feel a connection between us, or is it just me?
Taelia Fordragon says: Don’t get ahead of yourself captain Fairwind. Where are these friends of yours?
The man laughed.
Fairwind says: Far from any official place. If this miss Inkling is anywhere, I’m sure they can find her.
Vel looked over at Uther.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Isn’t that Anduin’s cousin?
Uther Menethil says: Certainly is.
They went back and forth for a moment discussing what to do as Taelia and the roguish man continued to stroll away, seemingly having not noticed them. Vel pointed out if Taelia was looking for an investigator it was quite possible she was maybe trying to get to the truth of the matter surrounding her mother’s death and Varian’s apparent conviction.
Uther Menethil says: This seems like a job for Uther Everymanethil.
Uther quickly decided to approach.
Uther Menethil says: Hey! Scuse me miss!
Uther flagged Taelia down as he took on a more commoner voice. However, Fairwind stepped in front of her.
Fairwind says: We’re not interested.
Uther Menethil says: I know the person whose doors you were banging on.
Fairwind says: Sure you do, and you’re willing to give that information for a healthy portion of gold, yes?
Uther Menethil says: Actually, I was on me way and I thought you might want to come with? But if you’re offering, I’ll take some money.
Fairwind furrowed his brow.
Taelia Fordragon says: You mean you’re going to find detective Inkling?
Uther Menethil says: Yeah, we was on our way!
Taelia Fordragon says: How’d you know we were looking for her?
Fairwind rolled his eyes.
Fairwind says: Really, you don’t know how that might possibly have been communicated?
Uther Menethil says: I don’t like to assume, but given you were practically smashing her door down, you might be looking for her.
Taelia Fordragon says: Right. I guess I was banging pretty loud, wasn’t I?
Uther Menethil says: Thought you might knock the door in, I did!
Fairwind looked up at Uther and grabbed him by the collar.
Fairwind says: If this is some kind of play or trick or scam I am on to you, alright? Do you understand me?
Uther forced himself to blush instead of laugh.
Uther Menethil says: Sorry I can’t concentrate when your face is so close to mine.
Fairwind let him go, and smiled.
Fairwind says: I changed my mind. I like this one. What’s your name, lad?
Uther Menethil says: My name is Nils!
Fairwind says: Alright, Nils, you should know that flattery will get you everywhere in life. We’ll accompany you for the time being.
Taelia Fordragon says: Yes!
Uther Menethil says: Alright, come along!
Taelia looked up at Luma sometimes, wide-eyed, as they appeared to be a very tall elf.
Liiraluma says: See something you like?
Taelia Fordragon says: Oh! Sorry! I just um… don’t see many elves, and definitely not as tall as you.
Fairwind says: I see something I like!
Fairwind winked at them.
Liiraluma says: Flattered.
Luma rolled their eyes, and Fairwind elbowed Uther.
Fairwind says: Told you, flattery will get you everywhere! Fairwind, by the way! Captain Flynn Fairwind! A coin to whoever guesses the name of my ship!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Is it the Fairwind?
Flynn Fairwind says: Boom!
He flipped a gold coin to Vel, who caught it, however she quickly assessed the coin was very much fake.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I suppose you didn’t say it was going to be real.
Flynn laughed and flashed Vel a winning smile.
Flynn Fairwind says: Now you’re catching on.
Uther Menethil says: Oh. I was gonna say the Queen’s Wistful Sigh. That would be a great ship name.
Flynn Fairwind says: …Actually I think it really would be a good ship name.
Uther Menethil says: Maybe someday I’ll be able to flatter meself into a captaincy, eh!
Flynn wrapped his arm around Uther.
Flynn Fairwind says: My friend, the world is yours for the taking! If… you have fast enough hands.
Uther Menethil says: Well, my hands can be fast! They don’t always do what I tell them to though. Sometimes they get confused.
Vel caught Flynn’s hand slip into one of Uther’s pouches as he wrapped his arm around him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Master Fairwind, perhaps you should keep yours where one can see them?
Flynn looked back and shrugged.
Flynn Fairwind says: I was just playing a little game!
He produced Uther’s gem of brightness and handed it back to him.
Uther Menethil says: Oh! Did that fall out of my pocket? Thank you for looking out for me, this is very important!
Vel sighed.
Flynn Fairwind says: An impressive piece of work for someone like you. No offense, but you seem more like a down-to-earth sort of fellow!
Uther Menethil says: Gift from a very dear friend, it was.
Flynn Fairwind says: Very dear and seemingly very rich… perhaps you’ll introduce me someday.
Uther Menethil says: Someday… wait, are we friends now?
Flynn Fairwind says: They do say I make friends quickly! What do you think, master Nills?
Uther Menethil says: Well, I certainly like to think we’re friends! I got a good feeling about you!
Flynn Fairwind says: Always trust the gut feeling. Always trust it.
Vel was giving Flynn a harsh stare from behind, and he looked back at her with another wink.
Taelia Fordragon says: Don’t let him bother you, he’s all talk.
Flynn Fairwind says: I beg your pardon!
Taelia Fordragon says: Besides, he knows better than to act up! He’s on my payroll at the moment, so if he wants to get paid he’d better listen to me, ain’t that right captain?
Flynn Fairwind says: Of course, miss Taelia, I would never hope to go against your wishes. Cyrus wouldn’t be happy.
Taelia Fordragon says: Right. My name’s Taelia, by the way.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Thalia. It’s a pleasure.
Taelia grinned, excited about how similar their names were. Luma introduced themself as “Lumaradin”, and Taelia said that was a very pretty name. She always had thought elvish names were pretty and she really wanted to learn the language, but she admitted it was really hard for her to sit down and study.
Gil said “her” name was Camthea, and Flynn commented that wasn’t a name he expected to hear around Stormwind. Gil offered simply that his parents weren’t from around there.
Flynn Fairwind says: You’re a quite interesting crowd, aren’t you?
They arrived at the apartment building in question, and Vel sent Samia a warning sending that there were two others with them that had been looking for her at her foreclosed detective agency.
A child was manning the desk. He smiled, one of his teeth missing, and he was likely the son of the owners. He asked if they were looking to rent a room. Vel clarified they were looking for some of the tenants and they were friends, and the kid said he wasn’t allowed to hand out room numbers.
Vel assured him that it was alright, as they already knew their apartment number.
Luma quietly looked at Taelia and asked if people regularly left kids laying around like this, and Flynn pointed out it was probably just the kid of the owner, as a lot of adults take care of business at this hour.
Vel said the apartment in question was 15, and the kid said it was on the first floor. He pointed in the correct direction, and Vel thanked him and gave him a silver piece.
Gil, however, followed up with three gold pieces. The kid’s eyes widened and he asked if that was really three whole gold pieces and they weren’t fake.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Yeah, who would give out fake gold pieces?
Flynn Fairwind says: Could you imagine doing something like that?
The kid held the pieces close to his chest and said he was gonna hold them really tight until he saw mom and pa. He thanked Vel and Gil, and Vel quickly looked around the entry to make sure no one saw the kid get three gold pieces. It seemed like it was clear.
Flynn Fairwind says: I was gonna just give him a piece of candy, but now it’s gonna look boring in comparison.
Uther Menethil says: You got candy?
Flynn fished out a small candy from his bag.
Flynn Fairwind says: Saltwater taffy. A personal favorite!
Uther Menethil says: You want to split it?
Flynn smiled.
Flynn Fairwind says: You know, Nils, that sounds like a lovely idea!
He split the taffy and handed a piece to Uther.
They arrived at the proper room and knocked on the door. Reginald Windsor asked what the password was, and Samia said there wasn’t one. Windsor opened the door with a bashful look.
Reginald Windsor says: Sorry, all of this has me pumped up, I guess I was just getting too much into the spirit of things!
He looked at the two newcomers.
Reginald Windsor says: These are the people that came with you?
He looked at Taelia, and then Flynn.
Reginald Windsor says: Where did you find these people?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Knocking on Samia’s office.
Samia Inkling says: I guess I should introduce myself. Samia Inkling, private eye, formerly of the office you were knocking on, though I’m more of an independent agent now.
Taelia Fordragon says: May we come in?
Samia Inkling says: Of course. Assuming that’s alright?
She looked at Windsor.
Reginald Windsor says: Of course, everyone come in!
He gave Flynn a long, hard look.
Reginald Windsor says: And make sure you treat the lady with respect, would you?
Flynn Fairwind says: Do I really give off that kind of look?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Yes.
Liiraluma says: You said that too fast.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: No, I think I said that at the proper speed.
Liiraluma says: Debatable.
Flynn Fairwind says: You wound me! It was almost like you had that comeback waiting for me! Just like you had that gold ready to hand to that child.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I find some people need the money much more than others.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Perhaps you should stop bickering.
Samia also cleared her throat.
Samia Inkling says: We’ve prepared refreshments for everyone. There’s tea, and also some coffee if you would like any, Thalia. Anyone else?
Taelia said some tea sounded lovely, and Flynn piped up that rum sounded great. Windsor and Taelia both gave him a look and he said he was just making a joke.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Isn’t it nine in the morning?
Flynn grinned.
Flynn Fairwind says: We seafarers have a saying! It’s five o’clock somewhere?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Timezone joke, got it.
The group entered the apartment, and Uther happily requested some sweet tea when Windsor made it evident that was an option. The group gathered around in whatever seats they could find.
Alleria Windrunner says: I’m alright, thanks.
Alleria had just manifested behind Flynn, and the man jumped immediately.
Flynn Fairwind says: Holy shit! When did you get here?!
Alleria Windrunner says: I’ve been here the whole time.
Flynn Fairwind says: My goodness, woman, you are quiet! And quite–
Alleria Windrunner says: Married.
Flynn Fairwind says: The message has been made loud and clear.
Flynn scooted away as Alleria leaned against a wall. Vel smirked and she and her aunt exchanged a look. Samia looked over at Taelia.
Samia Inkling says: So I understand you were trying to request my services?
Taelia Fordragon says: It’s quite alright. You was all on your way here, I don’t want to impose!
Velameestra Windrunner says: I do believe our goals are actually aligned, miss Fordragon.
Flynn immediately snapped to attention.
Velameestra Windrunner says: But… you were looking for the truth of your mother, yes?
Taelia Fordragon says: How… how did you know?
Flynn crossed his arms, and one hand had slid into a sleeve to clasp a dagger. If it was a trap, he was clearly ensuring he was ready.
Velameestra Windrunner says: A lucky guess, perhaps. But we are looking for the same thing.
Uther Menethil says: Ah, so the jig is up then?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Now that we aren’t in the middle of the street.
Flynn Fairwind says: Alright. An abundance of spending cash. A surprising number of contacts. Illusion magic. Who are you people, really?
Uther Menethil says: I have a gold coin for you if you get it on the first try.
Flynn Fairwind says: Oh, fuck… I can’t let this opportunity go. Hm. Lets see. Mysterious. Built like a fucking ox. More well-spoken than he was playing off to be. In the company of powerful mages… What could be– wait a minute, I think I got it! Uther Menethil!
Uther tossed Flynn the coin with a smile.
Uther Menethil says: You’re very good.
Flynn Fairwind says: Honestly, I don’t think I could have gotten it without the voice! I recognized the Lordane! And I heard news of all your heroics! You’ve been showing up all over the place, of course it would be you! Ha!
Velameestra Windrunner says: And it goes without saying, that doesn’t leave this room.
Flynn Fairwind says: Of course, of course! I wouldn’t dream of doing something like that.
Taelia elbowed him.
Flynn Fairwind says: I’m being honest! I’m on the up and up!
Taelia Fordragon says: Your highness, it’s been a while! The last time was at your celebration after you became a paladin, eh?
Uther Menethil says: The grand melee!
Taelia Fordragon says: I heard about you surviving… congratulations or whatever you say on that! Is it really you?
Uther Menethil says: The very same.
Taelia Fordragon says: Thank the tides I ran into you. If you’re all trying to help with this, then maybe we are on the same page.
Flynn Fairwind says: Before we get started, I just want to make the record straight I had no intention of actually stealing from you on the street! I was just playing.
Uther Menethil says: Of course!
Taelia Fordragon says: We can talk about that later, Flynn.
Flynn Fairwind says: Right, right, I just wanted to put it out there! Continue, love.
Taelia Fordragon says: Right, to speak plainly. On paper, I’m here because my cousin is getting married in a few weeks. I just arrived on Flynn’s ship. Cyrus was invited too, but he’s getting up there in age, so he hired Captain Fairwind to bring me. But… we heard about what happened with my uncle. With his majesty. Or… his highness now. And what he’s been accused of. I don’t like it. I don’t like any of this. I was hoping you could help me get to the bottom of this. Find out what really happened to my mother. It’s been a cold case for years… and I didn’t even get to say goodbye. I barely remember her. At the very least, I think getting to know what happened to her might make up for something. And I… I know it’s not like I know his majesty that well, but something about this doesn’t feel right. I dunno. It’s hard to say. But… I heard about you, and your private investigation. I was hoping you could help get to the bottom of this and maybe clear his majesty’s name. Or not. I dunno, it might have been him, but there’s something missing with all of this. It’s just…
Samia Inkling says: An inkling?
Taelia Fordragon says: Aye! It’s just like that! Did you choose that name?
Samia Inkling says: I did not, actually, I was blessed to have a fitting name given my later vocation. I have to come clean with you, miss Taelia. I am, first and foremost, a forensic investigator. I do best with bodies, but I think I can help you. As said, it seems your goal is parallel to ours.
Taelia Fordragon says: I’m willing to pay for it. I made sure I got a good purse and the good captain didn’t drain me dry on the way.
Samia Inkling says: Hold on to it for now. If everything goes according to plan, we may have a use for your coin. But I don’t charge until I get a result.
Taelia Fordragon says: That’s mighty kind of you.
Samia Inkling says: But before we get to that, would you be willing to answer a few questions?
Taelia Fordragon says: Of course. Anything I can do to help. I dunno how much help it will be, if there’s something I can do, I’d be happy to.
Samia looked at the group and nodded.
