Chapter Three: The Scales Tip

Gel'nok sought out Arthak Saurfang due to the talk that had surrounded the young chieftain's achievements, which included his talents as a smith as well as being a slayer of chieftains and breakers alike. Gel'nok expressed that he personally shared blood with Orgrim Doomhammer, and that he had also witnessed the magnaron that Arthak had slain in the mountains of Farahlon. In the end, Gel'nok had come with a proposition: he was willing to teach Arthak the techniques found in the blood the ancient breakers, techniques few knew, in exchange for the eye of the gronn that Arthak had slain.

Arthak agreed, and asked if these techniques could be taught to other members of his clan as well, a notion that Gel'nok was willing to humor if Arthak himself proved worthy.

Gel'nok was quick to take over command of the Broken Blade's forge, and that was where he spent the majority of his time until Arthak arrived to learn the techniques he had been promised. Gel'nok expressed the first step would be painful, and he produced a branding iron that he had used the eye Arthak had provided to create. A rune was forged into the end of it. As he pressed the rune into Arthak's flesh, the tattoos on his skin seemed to magically form around the new mark and take the form of scarred flesh: runes for both creation and destruction.

Gel'nok explained the runes were in the language of the Breakers. The runes themselves carried great power, and they could be etched into the arms and armor Arthak wielded, bestowing that power upon them and allowing him to wield it as the Breakers once did. Over time, Arthak would learn new runes, and new powers, until he could craft something he could truly be proud of.
