December 8th
Elissa and Teemo had opted to stay back at Moonbrook to talk to some of the townfolk and ask around. They figured they could likely help them out in various ways, between livestock and water filtration. Teemo said if she saw any Blackfuse goons she could try to get a read on them.
Vel put her hood up, as the sky was mostly clear and she was left squinting in the sun.
Vel and Gil focused on following the trail while Luma kept their eyes open for danger. They found more marks that were leading them further and further west. They passed old farmsteads that seemed to have people living there, but others were quite abandoned. None of them were particularly fertile, as it was approaching the heart of winter. They heard the caw of a turkey vulture overhead as it flew in a wide circle.
After about two hours of traveling, Luma noted a pack of seven wolves about 150 feet off the path. They appeared to be surrounding something. Luma alerted the group, and it seemed the wolves were moving in to surround three chickens.
Liiraluma says: Are your rotund birds natural prey of your canines? I haven’t bothered to learn your fauna.
Uther Menethil says: I don’t know why there would be chickens this far out.
Liiraluma says: I’m assuming we should stop them because chickens are edible, so I’m assuming someone might want those back.
Uther Menethil says: Makes sense to me. Is it worth blowing our cover?
Liiraluma says: Is it worth letting them go when there are so many people dying of hunger?
Vel and Gil looked back and noted the other four had started to meander. The wolves had yet to move in on the chickens. Luma pulled up their rifle to use the sight, and they noted one of the two chickens approached the wolf and pecked at it. The wolf chipped away, and the chicken started to eat it. Apparently they were statues.
Liiraluma says: I think I’m witnessing something unsettling. Chickens don’t eat rocks do they?
Vel and Gil clarified they did to help in digestion, but suddenly one of the “chickens” looked at Luma and released a loud crow and flared out its wings. It started to charge at them.
Velameestra and Gilveradin Windrunner says: Those aren’t chickens.
Vel knew that cockatrices were omnivores, and there were larger varieties that hunted for more dangerous prey. Their bites could turn things into stone, and some of them even had a gaze similar to a basilisk that allowed them to petrify things. It was believed they originated from some sort of mage breeding, or they were just a strange halfway point between birds and reptiles, no one was sure.
They were extremely territorial.
The group opted to just leave, and as they left Vel cast [Sleet Storm] over the cockatrices, and Gil caused a burst of [Plant Growth] to erupt in the same area. The two lesser cockatrices started to slip and slide, but the greater one launched itself through the storm.
Liiraluma says: So much for the prototype.
Luma deployed a small construct via a disc.
Liiraluma says: Keep them busy!
Prototype Construct says: Running interference protocol!
The construct started to fight the cockatrice, and it bought the group time to make enough distance away from the cocktrices.
Valeera Sanguinar says: What in belore’s name were those things?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Cockatrices. They can petrify. Those wolves were statues.
Vanessa laughed quietly.
Vanessa VanCleef says: And that was a really big one. I’ll have to let the people of Moonbrook know not to wander too close...
Liiraluma says: Are they common around here?
Vanessa VanCleef says: Not common, but not uncommon either. They like to squat in old farmsteads, and there are plenty around here.
Liiraluma says: What happened to everyone? Did they move or is it just that bad?
Vanessa sighed.
Vanessa VanCleef says: This place was never the most prosperous. The mine the Brotherhood is squatting in used to be the source of a lot of resources, but it went dry a while back. A few of the more stubborn folk stayed around, but there were other things to make ends meet. They could quarry in the Dagger Hills, try to find some hidden vein in the Deadmines, or just go back to livestock and agriculture. But… well. Things have been rough the last decade or so. A lot of farms have been abandoned. This place isn’t safe, and unfortunately with the war against the Dark Iron dwarves and the other problems that demanded the legions of Stormwind to pull their forces back into reserve… places like this fell to the wayside. Bandits. Monsters. Even sometimes troll raids from down south. It’s close enough to the Strangethorn Vale that even some jungle trolls raid these areas. It wasn’t safe enough for farmstreads to stay. Those that remain are half too stubborn to leave, or only live there because previous tenants left. This is what has drawn the Defias Brotherhood together. We’ve provided protection to these people. Anyone strong enough to fight in the militia has been dragged away to join one of the legions.
Liiraluma says: Good and unfortunate to know.
Vanessa VanCleef says: We do what we can to help, but we can’t fight a war and feed everyone. That’s part of the problem.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And that’s ultimately what the royal family is supposed to be doing.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Yet they pulled out of here in the first place. Varian claimed it was the court conjurer’s decision, but I think that was an excuse.
Velameestra Windrunner says: No, that sounds about right.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: That tracks.
Liiraluma says: With everything I know, yeah that sounds like it.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Regardless of how convincing she is! I don’t care if the Court Conjurer is the hottest thing since the invention of the sun, alright? It was his decrees that pulled people out of here in the first place. I’m glad he’s finally doing something about it? But this was his fault in the first place. It’s about time someone from the royal family did something for a change.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: You haven’t met Anduin before, have you?
Vanessa VanCleef says: Like he would have time to meet with someone like me.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It doesn’t disregard what’s going on, but things are a bit more complicated in the city than that.
Vanessa VanCleef says: The prince had enough pretty words, but it’s not like things are getting better with him ruling.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: No, it wouldn’t with her still around.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Tch. If House Wrynn is weak enough that the honeyed whispers of a single woman can bend them to her whim, then–
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s not just whispers. It’s magic.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
Vanessa VanCleef says: What kind of magic?
Velameestra Windrunner says: There are spells that can manipulate the mind and control people.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Wouldn’t that be a nice and pretty solution.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: …I don’t think it’s nice or pretty at all. I think it makes everything more difficult for everyone. Who do you trust? Who’s lying? Everything is in disarray either way.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s an issue we’re trying to solve.
Vanessa VanCleef says: That’s not what I meant… but. If what you say is true, that might explain things. I just don’t like how pretty of a solution that is. How easy it would be to let the ones responsible to wash their hands.
Velameestra Windrunner says: They still are the ones that chose the Court Conjurer. It’ll be messy. But at least we can get to the root of the problem.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Yeah, I guess you’re right. Sorry. I didn’t mean to lose my temper. It’s just…
Gilveradin Windrunner says: It’s been incredibly emotionally draining. It’s fine.
The group continued on on their trek, and they had no more encounters of note. There were passing sightings of animals, as well as a defunct harvest golem. Some crows sat upon it, and there were a number of holes that seemed to belong to prairie dogs.
The group traveled for a total of 13 hours before they decided to call it around 10pm and look for a camping spot. Luma heard a chime in the night, almost like a harmonious bell. For a moment they thought it was a naaru, but then they realized it was more like a bell.
They squinted in the night, and they saw a glowing horse. There were bells dangling off it, and it was casting a bright crimson light. The horse was intangible, in a way.
It was staring at Luma with burning eyes.
Liiraluma says: What the fuck.
Luma took a step to the right, and its eyes followed.
Liiraluma says: I’m not the animal one. I’m not the ghost one. Why do animals and things happen to me today?
The group noticed Luma was taking too long and they went to go see them. The moment Vel saw the horse, her eyes widened.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Fascinating.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: …Is that a ghost horse?
Vel was able to identify that they were looking at the vengeful spirit of a horse.
Liiraluma says: Great, I’ve made sustained eye contact with it for the past five minutes.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Wow. Maybe it had a bad run in with a harvester.
While Gil and Luma were going back and forth, Vel stepped forward and reached her perception out to the spirit, where she was able to solidify a temporary bond of understanding given they were both undead creatures. The horse’s eyes turned toward her, and Vel asked it what it was looking for.
It simply replied “Him”.
Vel asked if it was someone that hurt her, and the horse whinied angrily as her answer. Vel asked who “he” was.
Vengeful Horse says: He came in the night. Clad in darkness. Wielding shadow itself. Burning flames. He scorched them. Twisted them.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Do you know where he went?
Vengeful Horse says: The ones in red took him. You have their smell on them.
Vanessa’s eyes widened as she arrived and looked at the horse, getting context from Vel about what was happened. She confirmed that the Defias Brotherhood had taken one of the Dark Riders into their custody in the Deadmines. She said that she was pretty sure that the Defias had taken down the Rider’s horse when they captured the rider.
Context clues implied this vengeful spirit was likely that horse.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Is… is that a real ghost? Is this really happening?
Vel confirmed, and looked back at the horse.
Velameestra Windrunner says:: If you are seeking vengeance for the one that killed you, we have a mutual enemy. Would you like me to help you?
Vengeful Horse says: You’ll find him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I know where he is being kept. The ones in red are not your enemies. They captured him. They are not saving him.
The horse stepped closer to her.
Vengeful Horse says: You will bring vengeance to the one that slew my brother and sister? Vengeance to the one that bent me to his will? You will claim vengeance on the one who used me? Who turned my own teeth and hooves against the ones I called kin?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I will.
Vengeful Horse says: Then the pact is sealed.
A connection forged between them, and the horse reared back on her hind legs with a whinny. She was silhouetted in the moonlight, and two black wings that looked as if they were drenched in blood erupted from her back. Thunder roiled through the sky, and a peal of crimson and black lightning collided with the horse, and it vanished. A single one of the bloody feathers fell into Vel’s hand and faded away, and she felt a profound bond between herself and the creature. She knew the creature’s name was Blanchy.
They started to head back to where Luma was to set up the magnificent mansion for the night.
Valeera Sanguinar says: So let me get this straight… this horse was killed by the Dark Rider and forced to be a steed, and then Varian and the others killed the horse and took the rider captive, and now she wants revenge on the rider for killing her in the first place?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Correct. And we forged a pact to acquire her vengeance.
Valeera Sanguinar says: And… now you can call on the spooky spectral vengeance horse whenever you want?
Velameestra Windrunner says: That is the implication I am getting. If I do not allow her to claim her vengeance… well, then she will likely take retribution on me instead.
Valeera Sanguinar says: Okay, well, I guess we’ll need to negotiate something...
December 9th
It was slightly warmer the next morning, and Gil got an unsettling feeling as he checked the weather using [Druidcraft], and he sensed a pretty bad storm would be coming in around noon.
They traveled for about four hours without issue as they traveled through the Dagger Hills. They started to see the great sea in the distance. However, about an hour previously they had found their last symbol and didn’t find anything else.
They continued to head in the same trajectory, which had put them near the coast. They saw endless water, save one thing. Maybe about 500 or 1000 feet out, there was a lighthouse with a dock.
Vel started to poke around the shore line on their side of the water. She saw what appeared to be drag marks, which matched what might have been a boat. On the far side, she saw a boat docked at the lighthouse.
She found a patch of leaves that seemed to be suspicious. She began to go through them, and she got the flash of something metallic. She carefully moved them aside, and she noted a very new and sophisticated bear trap. It was sharp, and it was smaller than the average bear trap.
Something was glistening on it. It was poisoned.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well, whoever went this way trapped the place.
She tried to activate the bear trap using a mage hand, but it was not enough force to activate. Luma opted to resummon their construct, which toddled over and triggered the trap. The trap was moved aside, and the bear trap appeared to be chained to the lid of a strongbox.
Vel used [Knock] to open the box as it appeared to be locked with a powerful arcane lock. She found a collapsible boat inside along with a telescope, some repair tools, some well-made daggers, and two oil uniforms. They appeared to be goblin sized, and each one had a different symbol. One had a circular object with serrated teeth, like a saw blade, and the other one was a bomb with an unlit, smoldering fuse.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Is this Blackfuse?
Valeera Sanguinar says: Yeah, those are the symbols of Blackfuse and Venture Company.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Yeah, though that doesn’t explain why they are out here.
Liiraluma says: Well, they can make vehicles pretty well. Mucking around the coast isn’t the hardest thing for them.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well, the trail ends here, aside from that lighthouse.
The thunder roiled in the distance, and Vel squinted out at the storm. It was somewhat strange what appeared to be supplies was trapped in such a way, and Luma suggested there might be a false bottom. Vel looked again, and she found a very thin false bottom.
Inside were some documents.
At that exact moment, they heard Vanessa scream. They looked over at her, and she had collapsed with a bleeding leg.
Vanessa VanCleef shouts: FUCK.
Valeera Sanguinar says: Vanessa!
Vanessa VanCleef says: Get down!
Sand sprayed into the air as another shot was fired. Vanessa had a deep bullet wound in her leg. They ducked behind a tree and it appeared the shots were coming from the top of the lighthouse.
Uther lifted his shield to give some additional cover.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We should look at Vanessa’s wound first.
Vel and Luma quickly looked at the wound, and it appeared the bullet had avoided any arteries. There was also the scent of poison on the bullet. Vel reached out to try and extract it, but she recoiled.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Luma, can you get it out?
Luma nodded and set about extracting the bullet, and they realized the casing was delicate and it had shattered in the wound, sending poisoned glass shards in the surrounding flesh. Luma got the rest of the glass out, and it seemed Vanessa was stable. Luma put a patch over the wound with some healing magics.
Valeera Sanguinar says: I’ll keep an eye on her. Find whoever is doing this and stop them.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Shout if things go south over here.
Valeera nodded and both Vanessa and she withdrew her daggers. Gil conjured up a [Mirror Image] to give himself some defense.
Vel activated her bladesong and stepped out to get a clear shot of the light house. She summoned her magic but was immediately shot with a sniper blast in her arm, and she hissed in pain as her spell was completely disrupted.
Liiraluma says: Well, that’s not working. Lets try this.
Luma activated a [Time Stop] and she cast [Aura of Purity]. They then cast [Teleport]. However, there was some sort of disruption and Luma had to force their way through to reach the lighthouse. They appeared on the lighthouse balcony behind the assailant.
And as the figure looked up at them in shock, Luma realized it was Amber Kiernan. She grabbed the gun Luma had given her.
Liiraluma says: You owe me a favor!
Luma pulled out the disruptor rifle and leveled it back at Amber.
Liiraluma says: Don’t shoot me with my own gun.
Amber blinked.
Amber Kearnen says: Holy shit. What the fuck are you doing here.
Liiraluma says: Not how I thought we’d meet. That would be an insult to shoot me with a gun I gave you, you know.
Vel blinked, completely confused, but she lowered the illusion on Luma.
Amber Kearnen says: What are you doing all the way out here?
Liiraluma says: We’re looking for someone.
Amber Kearnen says: Is that so?
Liiraluma says: And it wasn’t you, but here we are.
Amber looked at the rest of the group.
Amber Kearnen says: Then that makes the rest of you… Uther, Velameestra, and Camtheus Glowsun.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And you’re well-informed.
Amber Kearnen says: That’s my job.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: You shot Edwin VanCleef’s daughter, you know that, right?
Amber Kearnen says: That was supposed to be a warning shot. I see it didn’t work. For most people, they would have left. How about this, you tell me who you are looking for, and maybe we can start lowering weapons. After all, you just admitted you’re working with a dissident to the crown. I need a bit more information.
Uther Menethil says: But I also am a crown!
Amber Kearnen says: Not my crown.
Uther Menethil says: I could be.
Liiraluma says: Uther, are you flirting?
Amber raised an eyebrow.
Amber Kearnen says: Sorry hun, not for sale. Besides, I think your fiancee might be upset about that.
Uther Menethil says: It was an offer of emigration, not–
Liiraluma says: It sounded like flirting, Uther.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I also definitely thought you were flirting.
Amber Kearnen says: Let me guess. If you’re with Vanessa, you’re looking for Edwin. Yes or no?
Liiraluma says: Yes.
Amber Kearnen says: Okay. I’m going to lower my weapon now, and you’ll do the same.
Luma lowered their weapon.
Liiraluma says: So you’re intelligence then?
Amber Kearnen says: I am intelligent, thanks for noticing.
Luma laughed.
Amber Kearnen says: This is not somewhere you should be. VanCleef is not here, and you won’t find him. I recommend you return to dear Vanessa and let her know her father is in good hands.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Were you the one leaving the messages?
Amber Kearnen says: I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We followed a trail. That wasn’t you?
Amber Kearnen says: I got good eyes, but my arms don’t reach that far. If there were messages, then I had nothing to to do with it.
Liiraluma says [telepathic bond]: By the way, she owes me a favor?
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathic bond]: Then use it.
Liiraluma says [telepathic bond]: Should I press with it?
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathic bond]: Yes, we need to find out where VanCleef is.
Liiraluma says: You know, after this, I dunno if I’ll see you again. I’ll live a lot longer than you, and you owe me a favor.
Amber closed her eyes with a sigh as she leaned her head back.
Amber Kearnen says: You’re not going to use that here.
Liiraluma says: I might need to for reasons that I’ll explain to you in a few weeks.
Amber Kearnen says: I could have given you the ride of your life, and you’re making me compromise my position. You really are a heartbreaker, aren’t you?
Luma’s tail flicked sharply.
Liiraluma says: I’m with a mechanic right now anyway.
Amber smiled.
Amber Kearnen says: Fair enough. Alright, sunshine, what do you want?
Liiraluma says: You know who we’re looking for. Where is and what happened to Edwin VanCleef?
Amber Kearnen says: VanCleef has already been taken back to Stormwind. He came here. And I presume those messages you were talking about… not that I would ever divulge top secret SI:7 information, was probably left by him. We’ve been watching him. We have an inside man. VanCleef came to us and said he wanted to talk to Shaw. We picked him up a few days ago, and I presume he’s back there. I’m watching the safehouse, ensuring things aren’t found. It’s bad enough you found the strongbox. I only saw him briefly, and he left from here. This place has been used for SI:7 for some time now. To keep an eye on things, or just a nice place to get away. The fact it’s so close to the Defias was a nice benefit. So if you’re looking for VanCleef, you won’t find him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Which crown are you answering to now?
Amber Kearnen says: SI:7 serves Stormwind, as it always has.
Velameestra Windrunner says: In the absence of Varian, would that be Anduin?
Amber noted and confirmed Anduin’s coronation had already taken place.
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathic bond]: We have to assume then that they are taking orders from Katrana.
Liiraluma says [telepathic bond]: That would make sense.
Amber Kearnen says: What happens now? I’m obviously not at liberty to stop you from walking away. You’re free to take me prisoner, but that would cause all sorts of trouble for you. But regardless, you put me in an compromising position.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The easiest thing that can be done is that we don’t say where we got our information, and you don’t report that you saw us.
Amber Kearnen says: Yet there’s still the problem of little Miss VanCleef across the pond.
Velameestra Windrunner says: She doesn’t need to know it was SI:7 that shot her.
Amber Kearnen says: So you’re just not going to tell her there’s an SI:7 agent on the inside?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I’m sure they’ve assumed there probably is.
Amber Kearnen says: Confirmation is a lot worse than speculation. And that brings us to–
Voice: That brings us to a very interesting situation, doesn’t it?
They turned around and saw an unassuming goblin man. He was bald, and he had a mundane face, but he had a cunningness in his eyes.
Cunning Goblin says: You gotta forgive my esteemed and talented associate here. She’s got a nose for trouble, but not so much for making a deal. Name’s Renzik. Folks call me the Shiv.
Vel heard a rumor that, within the SI:7, was a goblin in the higher echelons. High enough he was second in command. There was virtually nothing known about them, but many say he was a dagger, a shiv, in the night.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I get the sense you’re someone that can make that deal sweeter.
Renzik says: I also have the authority to do so. Isn’t that right, Miss Kearnen?
Amber Kearnen says: I’ll leave the rest to you.
Renzik says: Appreciated, sugar. So. You stumbled upon a bit of an operation. I also understand that you ain’t working for Defias. You might be working with them, at the moment. But you got some other goals going on, that much I can see for certain. After all, for all due respect, yous guys aren’t exactly the kinds of folks that try to change things by painting the town red. That much is obvious given how you handled things in Stromgarde.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Good assessment.
Renzik says: So. An exchange. As I’m talking to my associate here and letting her know what I found, I might forget that we was entertaining some guests. And maybe, in my lapse of awareness, I let a few things slip that would be rather unprofessional for SI:7 to divulge. On the converse, you all tell me what you’re doing here in Stormwind.
Vel’s eyes narrowed. He was a hard man to read, and she had no reason to trust him. He had many years of undercover work. She couldn’t tell if he had a genuine bone in his body, nor if what he’s saying is actually true.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re looking out for the kingdom. Our intention is not to hurt the crown. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Renzik nodded.
Renzik says: Good thing to say, and I’m glad to hear it, but that’s a sentiment a lot of people might say. It ain’t very much to work with, toots. If that’s all you want to give me, then that’s all you want to give me.
Uther Menethil says [telepathic bond]: I say we tell him about Katrana.
Gilveradin Windrunner says [telepathic bond]: I agree.
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathic bond]: …I suppose if he tells Katrana she already knows what we know.
Renzik’s eyes darted between them.
Renzik says: I’m getting the sense that you all are having a conversation between you. Let me guess… telepathic bond?
Velameestra Windrunner says: ….correct.
She looked back at Renzik.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re here investigating the fact your Court Conjurer is a dragon.
Renzik’s brow raised.
Renzik says: Hefty accusation.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We have evidence.
Renzik says: You don’t say. Anything you’re willing to share, or is that confidential?
Vel and the group engaged in another brief conversation, and they decided to hand over the real copy of Katrana Prestor’s ledger after Luma and Vel hastily made a copy of the book for Vel to keep to reference the data within.
Renzik says: …Very interesting. I won’t let such a generous gift go unreciprocated.
Vel explained that the ledger has a number of blackmail notes against various nobles that Katrana was using to strong-arm them. It was all encoded, but she included the cipher for Renzik to break it, as she had successfully broken the code.
Renzik says: …Mighty generous of you. Of all the places to find such an important piece of information, you’ll never believe what you can find out here. You really can find some crazy things out here. For example, crazy enough the old king is stomping around in places like this, but well… it ain’t just brigands, countrymen, and stonemasons that you can find out here. In fact, I even saw a blue-blood from Stormwind out here. At one of the old towers the Defias was using. Could barely believe my eyes, but Colyn Clessington. Didn’t think that man knew how to leave the city. Mighty strange that a blue blood like him would be supporting this little revolution. After all, I can understand if some of the less… affluent nobles would throw some support, but a big shot like Clessington, can’t say what he’d earn. And would you look at that.
He opened a page in the ledger. It showed Colyn Clessington’s name with a large amount of blackmail.
Renzik says: Maybe the unrest in Stormwind ran a bit deeper than we thought. Then again… what surprises me most about Clessington is how he’d be able to pull himself away from attending all those parties. Come to think of it, Lady Prestor shows up at a lot of them too.
Renzik shrugged.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Strange times.
Renzik says: Masquerades. Every one of them. You pull one mask off and find a dozen more.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Do you happen to know when the next one might be?
Renzik says: Haven’t been to the city recently. But… I know a man that might be able to help you out. Just moved into the city recently. You’d be surprised to look at him… he’s a bit of a unique one. Just opened up a butcher shop right in the dwarven district. A gnome, if you could believe it, by the name of Scabbs Cutterbutter. He tends to have an ear to the ground.
Vel smirked.
Liiraluma says: Already? Huh.
Renzik says: Sounds like you know each other.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’ve done a job or two together.
Renzik says: Didn’t take you for line cooks.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I prefer the butchering.
Renzik laughed.
Renzik says: Haha. I bet you do. This has been a wonderful meeting. But I got some business to take care of. I just got to make sure, this isn’t going to require me to move shop, is it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: No.
Renzik says: Then maybe we’ll have the opportunity to meet again for the first time.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Sounds like you do that a lot.
Renzik says: Not as much as I meet them for the last time. But that’s just business. Keep your heads down. And when you are ready to pull off masks, make sure you get all of them. You don’t want to be the only one at a masquerade with a naked face.
Vel nodded, and Luma looked over to Amber.
Liiraluma says: Well, once this all blows over, if you don’t hate my blue guts, I have another gun to show you.
Amber Kearnen says: If we both survive, maybe we can get a drink somewhere with a nice shooting range.
The group teleported away, and Amber looked at Renzik.
Amber Kearnen says: Is it safe to trust them? They could easily blow your cover.
Renzik shrugged.
Renzik says: I’ve gotten out of harder situations. If they squeal, I’ll get out without losing too many teeth.
Amber Kearnen says: So... you’re gonna keep on the job?
Renzik says: I never quit a job.
Amber Kearnen says: Are you going to tell Shaw?
Renzik smiled.
Renzik says: That. Is classified.
The group returned to Vanessa and Valeera, who were a bit damp, but they had taken shelter under a tree. Valeera said she had been hoping for the best, and asked what they found. Vanessa piped up to demand who shot her.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Are you familiar with a man named Colyn Clessington?
Vanessa sneered.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Who’s not? He’s one of the bigger names in the House of Nobles.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He’s a problem, turns out. Your father was taken to Stormwind by SI:7. But we found one of Clessington’s men.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Fuck. Is that who he was talking about? Was he talking about Shaw? Fuck, that idiot! I’m going to strangle him! Fuck. I don’t know how deep the Clessington stuff goes. My dad would know. Varian would know. If he’s been giving money…if it’s been dirty this entire time? Who is he working with, do you know?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The Court Conjurer.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Bitch. If her money is all over the place, there’s no telling how deep this goes. Shit shit shit.
Vel said the next step was to return to Moonbrook and talk to Varian, and she asked how different Varian had been acting since he took up the sword he had claimed from the Dark Rider. Vanessa admitted he was more tense and aggressive, but it wasn’t that surprising given how everything was going.
Vanessa VanCleef says: I don’t know how to feel around him. Not with everything after he and my dad got into it… now that the Juggernaut is almost fixed, they want to take them from both sides.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s best to approach this cautiously. Use fake names until we can get a read on him directly.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Alright. Might be harder to get you a meeting with fake names, but it’s worth a try.
Velameestra Windrunner says: If nothing else, just tell him that we have a lead on who was fabricating evidence against him. That will probably get his interest well enough.
Vanessa agreed, and Valeera said they should get back on the road to Moonbrook. Vel said they wouldn’t be taking the road.
Valeera Sanguinar says: Oh. Can you get us back faster?
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re going to teleport.
Valeeraa grinned at Vanessa.
Valeera Sanguinar says: See, pays off to know some powerful friends, doesn’t it?
Vanessa VanCleef says: Yeah. Guess it does.
The group teleported back to Moonbrook.
Vanessa VanCleef says: Alright. I can lead us down into the Deadmines. Um. Here.
She produced a handful of red bandanas and handed them out and instructed them to wear them on their arms. She would introduce them as new recruits, and she offered to have her people give them a tour so they could keep their eyes off them.
They met back up with Elissa and Teemo and debriefed them on what happened. Elissa got teary eyed about Blanchy, and Vel promised her that she would introduce her later.
The group was sent with Gerget Hardhands to take a tour of the Deadmines. It was more than just an old abandoned mine. Other members of the Defias were casting looks at them, and they caught an interesting scent. It was very musky and strong.
They heard strange laughter, and they saw many gnolls. One of them was eating a large haunch of something, and he was a huge gnoll with deep brown fur and messy teeth. Gerget advised them not to make eye contact, as in the best case scenario, they would see it as a mating display. They were the Riverpaw.
The big gnoll looked at them and laughed.
Hogger says: Fresh meat.
Vel’s ears flicked, a trace of annoyance passing across her expression. She knew the name Hogger, but there was always a Hogger leading the Riverpaw. It was likely a hereditary name.
The fact gnolls and humans were working together was an actually unprecedented thing for Stormwind.
Gerget commented he didn’t see the Gearbreaker brothers, who were the leaders of the Blackfuse that were present with the Defias. But they did see a large goblin shredder carving through some lumber, and in it was a goblin operating the machine. They explained that was Sneed Copperplug, and he was the foreman of the Venture Co that was present.
Some of the goblins cat-called Teemo and she rolled her eyes. She grabbed Luma’s ass, who was still a harvest golem.
Teemo Manabrake says: Undermine boys, don’t bother. I don’t need dregs like you to show me how to please a woman.
The goblins looked taken aback, and Vel saw them utter “oh, she’s a freak tho”.
They heard and smelled running water, and they emerged from an old mine shaft near an underground stream. There were wooden planks that made a dock inside the mine. There was a dining area and what appeared to be a kitchen. The cook that came out was revealed to be a murloc. He was pushing a pot of stew around that smelled very fishy, but people seemed to be enjoying it.
There were some small vessels in the cavern lake, but what dominated the cavern. It was some sort of orcish vessel, though heavily modified, and Vel had no idea how it got this far south.
Suddenly, they heard shouting.
Angry Voice says: That’s not your decision to make!
Stern Tauren says: Never said it was my decision.
They saw a man who was wearing some sailing leathers. From the looks of it, he was of a decent rank, as he had a hat that indicated him to be a captain or otherwise. But there was a distinctive Gilnean design to his outfit, and his accent followed suit. Hair started to grow on the back of his neck, yet the man he was arguing with dwarfed him, as he was a massive, black-furred tauren.
Angry Worgen says: We came here following Edwin VanCleef! You can’t pretend that royal wannabe can tell us what to do!
Stern Tauren says: Orders are orders. VanCleef and Varian have different ways to run things, but do you see VanCleef? No. We’re not going to sit on our hands and wait for him to come back. Time is ticking. We need to make a move. If VanCleef doesn’t show, then Varian is calling the shots, understood?
The worgen growled.
Stern Tauren says: What will it be, Ripsnarl? Is this a mutiny?
The worgen turned away in a huff, but he saw Vanessa, and his anger started to calm and he shifted back to his human form.
Ripsnarl says: Van. You’re back.
He had a bushy beard the same color as his fur, and wild hair that fell into a rough braid.
Ripsnarl says: Any news of your father?
Vanessa VanCleef says: Unfortunately not good news.
Vanessa explained and Ripsnarl growled.
Ripsnarl says: Dammit, VanCleef, we need you here. You best tell Varian, he’d rather hear it from you.
Vanessa VanCleef says: That was the plan.
Ripsnarl eyed them all up, and Vanessa explained she was going to go talk to Smite, and with luck, she’d get come get them to bring them to Varian later. The Gilnean worgen introduced himself as Admiral James Harrington, but he went by Ripsnarl.
