Runas was a nightborne who was exiled from Suramar City after being caught smuggling. While he had managed to survive for several years, his state degenerated into that of a nightfallen.

Chapter Five: Civil War

Runas had spent some time around the Azurewing Repose where he fed scraps of mana he found. At one point, he had stolen one of the blue dragon's eggs in the hopes he could then "save" it from the withered in the area and be rewarded with the mana he craved, and he had led the young blue dragon Emmigosa to the location of an egg that had gone missing from the hatching grounds. Unfortunately a horde of withered nightborne happened upon the same area and forced Emmigosa to try and defend herself and the egg against them alone. Arthak Saurfang and his fellows arrived to aid the young dragon, as did Gilveradin Windrunner and the Scales of Azeroth and Emmigosa's older relative, Stellagosa. While Runas had hidden himself nearby, he was found by those that had gathered, and Stellagosa took him into her custody so that he could plead his case to the patriarch of the repose, Senegos.

He introduced himself to those gathered, and also revealed he was from Suramar City, much to everyone's surprise as the city appeared to be only ruins. He explained the city was masked in an illusion to keep it hidden, and the nightborne there were reliant on a font of magic known as the Nightwell, which is why he had deteriorated after he had been exiled.
