Harpies
Harpies are a native race to Azeroth that descended from the Wild God Aviana.
Biology
Harpies have two genders: Female and Matriarch
Females are on average around 5 feet tall when fully grown. They live for 60-80 years on average, and cannot lay eggs. They are essentially the "workers" of the roosts/flights, and they are lain usually in large clutches at once.
Matriarchs are larger, stronger, and more rare harpies. They live for 300-400 years or more naturally, and range from 6-9 feet tall on average, though some can get even taller. They are the only ones who can lay eggs, and matriarch eggs usually can only be lain once every few years, and almost always in solo clutches.
Harpies also lay eggs by parthenogenesis; matriarchs lay viable eggs on their own, with no need for a genetic material doner. That said, matriarchs lay more viable eggs, including matriarchs, when they are safe, happy, and healthy. Matriarchs who pair off with others but who do not lay the eggs may still take a "paternal" role of their partner's clutches. Females are usually raised together in large groups, while matriarch harpies are often raised directly by their parent as a daughter.
In extreme conditions (usually if there are no other Matriarch around, or if there is a dearth of them) a particualrly bold female can undergo hormonal changes to become a Matriarch in a permanent metamorphosis.
