Outland Day 63
The group awakens the morning after No’Rash’s send off. The sky looks almost normal this day. Early in the morning, Nyxxa seeks out Arthak–finding the orc putting charcoal to parchment, which he puts away quickly upon her arrival.
Nyxxa says: The calm before the next storm.
Arthak Saurfang says: Yes.
Nyxxa says: While I’m remiss to move into planning again, I wanted to bring some concerns forward–ones you likely already thought off.
She looks down at the Doomhammer nearby.
Arthak Saurfang says: Yes. What concerns?
Nyxxa crosses her arms.
Nyxxa says: Given how many wrenches he’s tried to put in your plans thus far, I wouldn’t be surprised if he has one or two contingencies left would it come to this.
Arthak Saurfang says: He is not a fool.
Nyxxa says: How I’ve come to understand… you’re taking him down one-to-one, yes?
Arthak Saurfang says: Mok’gora, yes. Like Kargath.
Nyxxa says: Though I don’t want to miss it… I could work on rooting things out in the crowd if that’s his intention.
Arthak Saurfang says: If he were to interfere with the mok’gora, then he would be a fool. Before, yes, but during…
Nyxxa says: Depends on how paranoid you think he is.
Arthak Saurfang says: Paranoid, very. But the mok’gora is…
Nyxxa says: Yet he’s already defiled sacred spaces.
Arthak Saurfang says: This will be before the Horde. If he is caught, he will be undone regardless. If he wants to hold the title of Warchief, he needs to kill me without a shadow of doubt to the fairness of his victory. I think it more likely he would spend his energies to prevent me from making the challenge. That he can manage without destroying himself.
Nyxxa says: Well this is good to know.
Arthak Saurfang says: Last time someone interfered with a mok’gora…
Nyxxa says: I am aware. It was one of the things Remnii first warned me about… and what you told me as well. I would do no such thing.
Arthak Saurfang says: I wasn’t concerned about that. I think on the whole, it would be unwise for him to try that. It would be an attempt to take me down with him–an acceptance of defeat.
Nyxxa says: From what I have seen, I don’t think he would be beyond that…
Arthak Saurfang says: In the moment, yes, but I don’t think Blackhand is someone who would plan to fail. I think he would plan to avoid the challenge altogether. It’s what I would do. But what you do is your decision, Nyxxa.
Nyxxa says: I may keep an eye out just in case. It is my job to make sure you survive this.
Arthak Saurfang says: Very well. It does not hurt to be overly cautious.
Nyxxa nods.
Nyxxa says: I won’t interfere.
Arthak Saurfang says: I didn’t think you would.
Nyxxa says: I have complete faith in you.
Arthak Saurfang says: Hrm. That being said, do you have a contingency if I don’t win?
Nyxxa puts a finger on her chin.
Nyxxa says: That… is more something I thought I would deal with if it came to it. And adjust accordingly based on how it may happen. I need you alive. As we’ve learned, we have means to bring you back should that be necessary.
Nyxxa shrugs.
Arthak Saurfang says:I appreciate that. And respect that. But…
Nyxxa says: If you lose, you prefer that to be it?
Arthak Saurfang says: I won’t come back.
Nyxxa says: Well… as I understand that is a choice. But… I have several alternatives. Should you die… I’ll be able to deal with that. It’ll make my job harder… but not something I like to think about. We lost enough already. This won’t be the last person we lose. But I prefer to think about that when the time comes. We can adapt.
Arthak Saurfang says: Hopefully. If you have other plans, then good.
Nyxxa says: Would it be tasteless to ask you not to make my life difficult?
Arthak Saurfang says: No. Fruitless, probably.
Nyxxa says: Besides, I would miss you. But you’d be going out on your terms. There’s something to respect with that. That’s all I wanted to say. This has put me somewhat at ease, so thank you.
Arthak Saurfang says: Pleasure.
Nyxxa turns, but then stops.
Nyxxa says: Of course, I’d also like to ask you how you are, now that business is concluded.
Arthak mulls over the question.
Arthak Saurfang says: I am clear.
Nyxxa says: Is that a good or a bad thing?
Arthak Saurfang says: For me, clarity is a boon.
Nyxxa nods.
Nyxxa says: Good.
Arthak Saurfang says: And you?
Nyxxa says: I’ve made peace with what has happened and what is to come. May not be the last time I shed tears, but that’ll be as it will. I honor the sacrifices made and move forward, as I always have.
Arthak Saurfang says: Respect.
Nyxxa nods and heads off. After a bit Arthak leaves his temporary abode and goes off to find Lantresor. He finds the half-orc meditating as he polishes his blade on a stone overlooking Nagrand.
Lantresor says: Chieftain.
Arthak Saurfang says: How are you fairing, old friend?
Lantresor says: That is a… difficult question. To leave this place again not knowing if I will ever truly return to the place I was born. It’s a bittersweet sorrow, one that I believe all of us here are well acquainted with. Come.
He sets his blade aside and pats the ground next to him. Arthak sits down beside him and lights a smoke.
Lantresor says: It seems that ever is there a storm on the horizon. It is difficult to remember the days when there was not, though I know they happened, and they will come again. But here we are in the eye.
Arthak Saurfang says: The calm between as Nyxxa said.
Lantresor says: And how fair you, my old friend?
Arthak Saurfang says: I am clear. I… know what I am doing. I know what I am going to do.
Lantresor says: A clarity of purpose. Good. A strike without intent is not one that can ever make its mark. But you have had purpose. You have had it for a long time, Arthak. But… the purpose for which you stride now is one greater than any others that you’ve thus taken. The strike that you must make–more decisive and made with more clarity than you have made to this point. That in itself is… curious given our most recent conflict. Yet, here we stand. I believe No'Rash came to a similar conclusion in his final moments. A clarity of his own purpose laid bare before him. But I cannot speak for the dead. I can only muse.
Arthak Saurfang says: Should I defeat Blackhand and become Warchief… many things are going to change.
Lantresor says: And your sleep schedule is not one of them.
Lantresor chuckles softly.
Arthak Saurfang says: No. Probably not. It means being pulled deeper into the war. Into the Legion. Into the council.
Lantresor says: Into danger.
Arthak Saurfang says: But… it is the next step. Blackhand… deeper also means closer. Close enough that eventually I’ll be able to take my swing.
Lantresor says: The perfect strike… it is one that few masters of the blade can ever hope to reach. Years of practice, training, preparation… it can not always produce the clarity of purpose and accuracy of the blow one seeks. But you, you have done a great deal of preparation for this moment. When the Warchief crosses his will against yours, ‘tis with one stroke that will carve a new future for our people. But you are right, you are going deep. Not only will you be the chieftain of a small clan…
Arthak Saurfang says: That is why I came to talk to you.
Lantresor says: You seek to speak of the future of your clan?
Arthak Saurfang says: I wanted to speak of your future.
Lantresor looks at Arthak.
Arthak Saurfang says: Not long ago, I presented you the choice between the Broken Blade and being the shadow… the guard… to the Warchief. Fate has given you the same choice again.
Lantresor says: Hmph. Strange is it… rare are the times where lightning strikes twice, yet here I am. I don’t believe that you of all people need someone to guard you, Arthak. And yet… when my master fell to your blade, when Samuro gifted upon you this legacy that he had taken up, I followed you. Not because it was his will, not because I sought to join a clan of my own. I followed because you and I have been linked through our bonds of blood and steel. I am not one for leadership. So I would make a poor replacement when you would take up the mantle of Warchief yourself. I will leave that to those more fit to such things. I would be honored to watch your back and to be your eye.
Arthak Saurfang says: I could not ask for better.
Lantresor smiles and looks out over the edge of Garadar.
Lantresor says: You know… a part of me wishes we could see his face. Watching you take up this path, the young and turbulent youth that he knew for so many years. Though I could only imagine the scolding you’d get considering your impending choice of weapon during the mok’gora.
He smirks.
Lantresor says: You are ready.
Arthak Saurfang says: I am.
The pair of them stare off over the plains of Nagrand, and a curious wind blows out from the east–rustling their hair. Arthak can’t help but watch it as it goes. Dancing in the wind, he sees Karand–the hawk–flying overhead.
Meanwhile, Nyxxa goes to seek out Azgadaan. He had set up his mansion again, and she finds him inside. Some of the orc children are trying to throw things from the manor to the outside, arguing about who’s went further.
Nyxxa says: Hey, Azgadaan, I was wondering how you were feeling in light of everything?
Azgadaan says: With Mannoroth gone, I’m more resolved to continue down this path. I’m doing alright. I wasn’t as attached as you all were to No’Rash. I barely knew the orc. He was, as I said, good to know during the short time I did. But it looks like most of you took it far harder than me. You got to know him while I was gone.
Nyxxa says: There can be sorrow in not getting to know someone better before they’re gone.
Azgadaan says: How are you?
Nyxxa says: Alright. I just spoke with Arthak about future plans for when we get back. And… we are not to raise him should he fall in the mok’gora.
Azgadaan says: That sounds like him.
Nyxxa says: But, also, we both are of agreement that Blackhand will likely get in the way again. So keep an eye out.
Azgadaan says: Of course.
Nyxxa says: Additionally, I wanted to ask if you thought about… how you’re going to talk to Aracyra when you get back? You can tell her what I told you, it’s just… let me know so I can prepare for her ire. But if you need to throw me under the saber, please feel free to do so.
Azgadaan says: Honestly, I have no idea about that situation… I need to talk to her about it because that is not something we can do to each other if we’re in a relationship. And I recently made a mistake too. But, I don’t know how to approach that part. Mistakes are made. The only thing we can do is move forward.
Nyxxa crosses her arms.
Nyxxa says: I’m concerned Aracyra may not see what she did as a mistake. I think she’s been taught that’s not something that… shouldn’t be crossed. So I fear if you’re approaching it like that, then… she’s not going to realize she did anything wrong. Knowing her, she may double down.
Azgadaan says: Perhaps. I’ll take some precautions, but I’m fairly certain I’m safe from future mind alterations.
Nyxxa says: As long as you’re confident. I’ll just prepared for her to be mad at me, and if her being mad at me makes your relationship better, I’m fine with that. But if you need advice, I’m here.
Azgadaan says: Well, for one… I could use your advice seeing you are my elder in certain things. I may have… accidentally cheated on her with Levia while we were inebriated and you were out with Lantresor.
Nyxxa nods, listening, and then freezes as the full realization sinks in.
Nyxxa says: Excuse me… come again?
Azgadaan says: Uh… it’s a bit foggy, but I’m fairly certain I slept with Levia before we went to fight Mannoroth. And now things are tense between myself and Levia and… yeah, that happened, and I have no idea what to do.
Nyxxa says: Oh dear… I thought you had a fight, I didn’t… Oh dear.
Nyxxa takes a deep, centering breath.
Nyxxa says: This is the type of mistake that people your age make, unfortunately… I regret to inform you, that if you don’t handle this incredibly carefully, Levia may be in danger.
Azgadaan says: I thought about that, yes.
Nyxxa paces a bit, thinking.
Nyxxa says: In most situations, I would say be honest, but given everything else… that is a less viable option. I… you have several options. Tell her the truth but don’t tell her who… or not tell her at all. While this is not an advice I’d give you normally, at this point… you’ve built the relationship on a foundation of lies. I just… wouldn’t tell her. I’m sorry, this is a lot more difficult than I was expecting it to be.
Azgadaan says: Alright…
Nyxxa says: Wait. I think I actually have something for this.
She pulls out the wisdom ball from Khadgar.
Azgadaan says: What is that?
Nyxxa says: A gift from a friend. But one to use closer to the event. But this is your relationship, your challenge, and you are free to do what you will.
Azgadaan says: I’d rather not lie to her… but seeing that may put Levia in danger, I’m going to have to. I just, don’t know how to fix things with Levia.
Nyxxa says: I can help with that. I think she’s scared.
Azgadaan says: Understandable, Aracyra can be a terrifying woman.
Nyxxa says: I’d use what information you need to, say what you need to, but I would recommend… the lighter option is take a break, the heavier option is break up entirely. If you truly do care about her, given the situation… to protect Levia, it’s complicated. Though Aracyra is powerful and a danger to all of us, she doesn’t deserve to be lied to. If you are going to keep this from her, I recommend breaking it off. Just for a time.
Azgadaan closes his eyes and nods.
Azgadaan says: I think you’re right. We at least need a break after everything…
Nyxxa says: In another relationship, the same mistakes could have been made with much fewer stakes, but here…
Nyxxa puts a hand on Azgadaan’s shoulder.
Nyxxa says: None of you deserve this. You all deserve to be able to make these kinds of mistakes without such devastating consequences… but I have faith all of you can see this through. You and Levia, at least. I don’t know about Aracyra, but I think the best thing is to keep the manipulation to a minimum.
Azgadaan says: I agree.
Nyxxa hugs him tightly.
Nyxxa says: I can talk to Levia first if you like…
Azgadaan says: Yeah… just make sure you talk to her privately…
Nyxxa says: Does anyone else know?
Azgadaan says: Just me, Levia, and… I think Nitrogg has suspicions.
Nyxxa says: Do you need me to silence him? Wait… that came out harsh. He is capable of keeping secrets, clearly…
Vaerux says [telepathically]: Don’t forget me! I know too! Man, this kid is fucked!
Nyxxa says: Oh, Vaerux knows too. You don’t want to know what else he said.
Azgadaan says: If you don’t think Nitrogg can be quiet, I can banish him to the arcane dimension.
Nyxxa says: He owes us. He tried to kill us. I’ll go talk to Levia. Thank you for telling me, Azgadaan. I’ll do everything I can to help you.
Azgadaan says: Thank you, Nyxxa, and thank you for the advice. I have no idea what I’m doing.
Nyxxa says: It’s a process, and believe me, I’ve made mistakes as well. My advice comes from experience. Oh, and when things are dealt with, there’s another thing… but one thing at a time.
After some time spent with Lantresor, Arthak goes to find Azuka. He finds her walking between the different statues of the shamans that protected Garadar. He sees her stare at each one for a good few moments before moving on. Veena is trailing behind her, exploring.
Arthak Saurfang says: Memorizing faces?
Azuka notes his arrival, but doesn’t turn away.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: I… wanted to see what they looked like. In the last moments. I’ve seen people die before. But I’ve never looked at their faces. I wanted to see if it was the same.
Arthak Saurfang says: And?
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Fear. But a smile. Acceptance. Purpose. On all of them. Just like No’Rash.
Arthak Saurfang says: A lot is made about a glorious death. Glory is overrated. A good death… that is what a good death looks like.
Azuka looks at Arthak and then back up to the statue of Aggralan. She doesn’t say anything further, once more reading the woman’s expression again and again.
Arthak Saurfang says: What are you thinking about?
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Everything. Nothing. My body feels… light and heavy. My mind… the same.
She turns and looks out towards the horizon.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: I think everyone is feeling this. Like… it’s like mud. Like falling in the mud after a long rain. You wash it off, but you became so used to the weight. You feel like you’re choking. Like you’re going to fall. And none of them realize it. No one outside this village knows that he’s gone. That the changes that are happening all around us… what they cost us. What they cost him. A good death is still a death.
Arthak Saurfang says: You are right. And death is… never simple for those left behind.
Azuka continues to look at the horizon, and then she squats down–her weight balanced on the front of her feet. She picks up a small stone and rolls it around on her hand before hurling it off the edge of the cliff. Arthak sits down beside her, and she fully sits herself–leaning her head on Arthak’s shoulder.
Arthak Saurfang says: I wish I could say it gets easier.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: You just… have to get stronger. The weight doesn’t get lighter.
Arthak Saurfang says: But you learn how to carry it.
Azuka nods and falls into contemplative silence. They sit for a bit before Arthak speaks up again.
Arthak Saurfang says: The fight with Blackhand is coming.
Azuka nods and then moves to get to her feet.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Yeah.
Arthak also gets to his feet.
Arthak Saurfang says: However that goes… I will not be the chieftain of the Broken Blade any longer.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: What happens to us then?
Arthak Saurfang says: That’s what I hope to ask you. I told you I hoped you would succeed me, and you said that you would. I wish to know if that was still your answer.
Azuka swallows.
Arthak Saurfang says: It’s alright if your answer has changed.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: I… I didn’t… expect it to be this quick. I don’t know if I can. If I’m ready to do that. Why would anybody follow me?
Arthak Saurfang says: I asked myself the same question repeatedly.
Azuka looks down, defeated by the comment.
Arthak Saurfang says: We never know if we’re ready. We never know if they will follow.
Azuka considers and then nods.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Okay. I don’t know if I’m ready for this. But… I’ll do it.
Arthak Saurfang says: Do you want to?
Azuka Stormbreaker says: I have to. And that’s enough. What I want is for you to win. For you to defeat Blackhand. For you to live.
Arthak Saurfang says: And that’s what I will do.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Good. When I agreed before… I didn’t know that’s how Warchief things worked. I assumed that would mean it was after you were gone. If you win, at least you could still be… you could still be here. So win. And I’ll do it.
Arthak Saurfang says: A fair trade.
Azuka makes semi-prolonged eye contact with Arthak–a rare gift from her. Arthak meets her gaze.
Arthak Saurfang says: Were he still here… I know he would have followed you. Were I able, so would I.
Azuka promptly looks at the group in embarrassment, but she moves forward and presses her forehead against his chest.
Nyxxa manages to find Levia flying on the south end of the island. She sees the felblood elf with her back faced outwards–free falling backwards off the edge. She then flutters back to the edge and meets Nyxxa.
Levia Blackflight says: Hey. Sorry. Were you looking for me?
Nyxxa says: Yeah. How are you feeling?
Levia rubs the back of her neck.
Levia Blackflight says: I’m doing alright. I just…
Levia chews on her lip.
Levia Blackflight says: It was tough watching all of that. I just wish I could have done something for Sadras and…
Nyxxa says: We can stay by her side as long as she needs.
Levia Blackflight says: She’s been trying to swing that monster of a club all day.
Nyxxa says: If that’s what she needs. I’d check in on her again, but I fear I’ve been… a bit obnoxious about it. I don’t want to overstep my bounds.
Levia Blackflight says: I think that’s how the orcs do their thing. They just throw themselves into… what they want to do. I have a lot of respect for that. Yeah. It’s a lot. But I’m alright. Just…
She looks out towards the horizon.
Levia Blackflight says: I figure if we never come back here, I couldn’t just leave without taking a few more freefalls. It’s not every day you get the chance to jump off something this high.
Nyxxa says: It’s exhilarating! But… there’s something I wanted to bring up.
Levia Blackflight says: What’s up?
Nyxxa says: I…
Nyxxa pauses.
Nyxxa says: I spoke with Azgadaan. And he asked for my advice on something that had happened.
Levia puts her hands on her face and wipes them down, stretching her cheeks.
Levia Blackflight says: Fuck. Light dammit. Does that idiot not understand… just… forgetting about it? Great.
Nyxxa says: He’s… planning on doing just that, but he wanted my advice on handling Aracyra going forward.
Levia Blackflight says: Yeah. That’s a whole thing, isn’t it?
Nyxxa nods.
Nyxxa says: Given the choice he’s likely made, it’s likely going to be something that will be forgotten about. But it’s important you two are on the same page about what needs to be done.
Levia Blackflight says: Nothing needs to be done, it was just a really fucking stupid lapse of judgement. What needs to be done is that she never hears about it, ever, because the last thing I need is a psycho girlfriend coming after me. The last thing I need is for her to have a grudge against me for something I wish I didn’t do. But that’s not how any of this works.
Nyxxa shakes her head.
Levia Blackflight says: So… it sounds like he’s going to be cutting her off?
Nyxxa says: Going on a break… at least for the meantime.
Levia Blackflight says: Yeah. Good luck.
Nyxxa says: There are other reasons… but…
Levia Blackflight says: You don’t think she’s the type of person that works on, right? Taking a break?
Nyxxa says: I don’t know.
Nyxxa pinches her brow.
Nyxxa says: There were already enough lies to begin with. But I want to be there for Azgadaan in what happens next, and I know you care about him too. It was… as you both say, just a mistake. And honestly, these things happen. It’s just in this circumstance, the stakes are higher than they would be.
Levia Blackflight says: Yeah, I guess so. Honestly, if anything, I kind of… feel bad.
Nyxxa cocks her head.
Levia Blackflight says: It doesn’t take a detective to know that girl’s had a fucked up day, but holy shit… the shit with her mom? Honestly, she seems like the type of person that gets stepped on the hardest by the Legion.
Nyxxa nods.
Nyxxa says: She didn’t ask for any of this, or deserve any of it.
Levia Blackflight says: And here I am making her life more fucking complicated. Even if she doesn’t know it… it’s fucked up that I’m the one that feels like a bad guy.
Nyxxa says: The thing about just forgetting about it… forgetting it means you run the risk of making the same mistakes again.
Levia Blackflight says: On the plus side, the silver lining in all this shit, no matter how much I drank yesterday, I couldn’t even get a buzz. So whatever happens, regular booze won’t cut it. So that’s one problem not to worry about. Looks like I finally built up a tolerance. Guess I can thank Mannoroth for that one, huh?
Nyxxa says: I’m sorry you both need to go through this.
Levia Blackflight says: It’s not the first time I made a mistake, and it won’t be the last. But thanks.
Nyxxa says: It shouldn’t have the gravity it does. Though you two should at least talk. Clear the air and let it go and move forward. I think that’s what both of you want, but it’s not gonna happen unless you talk about it.
Levia Blackflight says: Yeah, you make that real easy sounding.
Nyxxa says: it’s not, but I’ll be here for both of you.
Levia Blackflight says: Yeah, I’ll get around to it. I don’t plan on making it a thing.
Nyxxa says: I’m holding you do that.
Levia groans.
Levia Blackflight says: Fine.
Nyxxa smiles.
Levia Blackflight says: But thanks for giving him advice… even if he’s a dumbass, blabbing to you is one of the better options. Could you imagine if Arthak found out?
Nyxxa says: On the bad side, Vaerux knows now. But, that’s the nature of it.
Levia Blackflight says: I think that’s the least damage he could do if he got out.
Nyxxa says: Nitrogg also saw, but I silenced him.
Levia Blackflight says: Geez, did you kill him?
Nyxxa says: No. Not yet anyway. But he understands and will keep his mouth shut.
Levia Blackflight says: Normally if a satyr tells you that, you don’t believe them. But I think I can make the exception here. So, are we gonna jump off this cliff or not?
Nyxxa says: Sure.
They opt to freefall off the cliffside together.
Later that day, Arthak pulls out his sending stone to send Rakeesh.
Arthak Saurfang says [sending]: We’re going to be leaving soon. We should probably meet.
Rakeesh says [sending]: Yes, I suppose we should, shouldn’t we? I won’t be long for this world either. Name a time and place. I’ll be there.
Arthak Saurfang says [sending]: Tomorrow. Socrethar’s Seat.
As Azgadaan goes around checking on everything, he encounters Phaedra.
Phaedra says: From the timbre you’re speaking, I would assume you and the others won’t be long for Garadar?
Azgadaan says: Seems so.
Phaedra says: What’s next? Will you be heading back to Azeroth.
Azgadaan says: Yes. First we need to find a way to get there… I know how to plane shift, but there’s nothing we have that’s locked to Azeroth. We’ll figure something out. Then we deal with Blackhand. And I hope after that we can get Arthak and his people on a better track to the future.
Phaedra says: I suppose all I can say is good luck.
Azgadaan says: We will need it. So thank you.
Phaedra says: Before you go. I am curious. When you were here last, we spoke, and I asked you a question–or I suppose that was two times ago now. Have you put any more thought to the answer?
Azgadaan says: I’ve thought of a lot of questions and come up with few answers but… why would a draenei be upset to be compared to an eredar… well, they aren’t the same. Eredar went down a very wrong path and have been murdering the draenei, and being compared to them is to like being compared to someone that’s been killing you all this time. I don’t blame you. My people are vicious. That’s the best answer I could come up with. They’re… not very comparable people. The average draenei to the average eredar… one will try to kill you, the other is more likely to be a friend.
Phaedra says: I believe that is boiling it down a fair bit, but not a bad answer all the same. I can’t pretend to know what your life was before all this, Azgadaan. Frankly, few who meet you will. They will see you as an eredar like any other. But you need to deal with them. Everyone is different. Everyone has different experiences. The average eredar and the average draenei cannot be boiled down… there are still those of us on either side of this conflict that have been alive far longer than we have who remember the days before. People like you and I… we live with the consequences of those who came before.
Phaedra holds her hands out and looks down at herself.
Phaedra says: Look at me. I am like this. Because of a war I did not start. And look at you. You are running from a history you did not write. In another world, perhaps, we both would like that.
She points across the way to Dornaa laughing and holding Thela’s child.
Phaedra says: But that world is not real. It’s fantasy. Regardless of where our people came from, they are not the same anymore. They never will be. That isn’t something to be… ashamed of. I did not ask you this question to shame you or make you feel bad. You didn’t ask to be born. None of us did. I didn’t ask to have this done to me by the Horde. Neither did any of the other krokul when our lives were stripped from us. Some will lose themselves to despair. But I have not. It is easy to lose yourself looking backwards. Looking at what you are and the hand you are dealt. But you can’t change what you are, Azgadaan. You can accept what you are. Being different does not mean you cannot share. As you’ve proven quite literally with that trick of yours.
She gestures towards the entrance of the mansion.
Phaedra says: This place is proof of that. Orcs and krokul living without killing each other. As terrible as the world is, it’s a place of small miracles. Looking for those miracles is enough for some. Besides, there’s no point me lamenting what I looked like before. After all, I still got it. So I’m not too concerned.
Azgadaan says: I won’t deny that. Then again I had no frame of reference.
Phaedra says: I barely remember myself, and I think I prefer it that way. Safe travels, Azgadaan. And for what it’s worth, I do hope you find your miracles. As big or small as they happen to be.
Azgadaan says: Thank you. If there's anything I can help with, don’t hesitate to ask. As you said, I have tricks.
Phaedra says: That you do.
Phaedra turns away to head back to her business.
Nyxxa had moved to the crafting room to finish up her ring of mind shielding, but she suddenly stops.
Nyxxa says: Oh no.
Azgadaan was also there.
Nyxxa says: Azgadaan, there was one other thing…
Azgadaan says: Oh?
Nyxxa says: You remember that before you were resurrected, we had a visit from the Deceiver… he gave us his blessing. Well… he also, I just remembered, he also told Aracyra that if there was anything she wished to speak on, he would be there to listen… given things I thought that was important to mention.
Azgadaan says: …Lovely. Now I have to worry about him as well, not just her aunts…
Nyxxa says: At the very least, our mutual friend gave us some advice.
She gestures to the ring of mind shielding.
Nyxxa says: At least those bracers should come into use.
Azgadaan says: Yes. I hope they work.
Nyxxa says: Problems for later… but important for you to know.
Azgadaan says: Thank you for telling me. Oh. And dinner should be ready soon. Hope you like meat, they look like Hardskin.
Nyxxa says: Perfect. I would love not thinking about this right now.
As Nyxxa fully takes in the appearance of the loaves, she blinks.
Nyxxa says: Azgadaan… you deal with things in very… interesting and strange ways.
Outland Day 64
The group gathers together the next morning to head out to Socrethar’s Seat to meet with Rakeesh. Go’el bids farewell to his children.
Go'el says: The next time I see you… it will be to bring you to Azeroth so you can see the world we’re building for us. But until that, I need you both to watch this place, alright?
Geya'rah nods.
Geya'rah says: We will, I promise!
Durak also nods.
Durak says: I’m holding you to that.
Go'el says: I expect nothing less.
Go’el presses his forehead against both of their’s, and goodbyes go around the group as Sadras embraces her parents. Azuka is forced to say goodbye to her little squad, and Nyxxa says goodbye to Kroll–picking him up.
Kroll Gravenight says: I’m too old for you to do this!
Nyxxa says: When’s the next time I’ll be able to?
Kroll Gravenight says: Good point.
Arthak gives an awkward nod to Karg and Lokra, and Lokra gives him one in return.
Azgadaan casts [Teleport], and the group appears at the chaotic site of Socrethar’s Seat in the Netherstorm. They look over, and they see Rakeesh’s vessel already parked on the flat, blasted earth.
Initially, there is no one outside, but as the group gets their bearings, they hear the hissing of the ramp opening. Moments later, Rakeesh steps out. There is a sharp smile on his lips. Spinyl steps beside him, her arms wrapped around a small felhunter.
Rakeesh says: Well well well, I didn’t think you could pull it off, but you managed. Were I betting man, I would have lost a lot of money. But you’ve all done, quite frankly, a fantastic job. Outland is already in the process of descending into chaos, and we have you to thank for that.
Arthak Saurfang says: Well… glad to be of service.
Rakeesh says: I suppose you’ll be heading back to Azeroth soon.
Arthak Saurfang says: In fact, yes. More work to get done.
Rakeesh says: Of course. This has been a pleasure, and I’m sure that in the future, we may have… future use for one another. As you might be aware, or you might have assumed, I’ve taken the liberty of seeing to it that a liaison is on place between your people and mine. Once you return, I’ll send word to them that they might… take a more active role in the sharing of information. But in the meantime, what can I do for you? We are all busy people here, and we have things to take care of, but what’s a few words between friends?
Arthak Saurfang says: Word has already spread, but… what is the story? For what happened.
Rakeesh says: Why, much of what you expect. That Mannoroth’s focus was so focused on glory, they let their prey slip through their fingers. Unfortunately the Lord of the Pits was among the casualties. Dragons are mighty foes, after all, and Sinestra is one of the mightiest.
Arthak Saurfang says: Makes sense. Simple. Good.
Nyxxa says: And mostly true.
Rakeesh says: Should anyone have concern about your own presence, that’s simple. You did everything you could, but a dragon is still a dragon.
Nyxxa says: In the end, Mannoroth knew the risks.
Rakeesh says: He did! And it was all you could do to escape the scene of the battle. Most of you, at least.
Arthak Saurfang says: Not without loss.
Rakeesh says: In his death, he provides a convenient strengthening to your alibi, doesn’t he?
Arthak nods, and Nyxxa sighs.
Rakeesh says: Poetic that he was able to accomplish the goal he set out to do. I believe just about anyone could appreciate such circumstances. I’m glad he didn’t waste his life. I do dislike seeing potential thrown down the drain.
Sadras is biting her tongue to the point there may be blood by the end.
Nyxxa says: I believe that’s all that needs to be said.
Rakeesh says: Of course.
Arthak Saurfang says: And I assume since you were able to see to the end of your bargain that the other party will see to theirs?
Rakeesh says: Of course, though you need not concern yourself with that. Everyone in this arrangement is coming out with what they wanted. Well, of course, except for Lord Mannoroth himself.
Nyxxa says: And Sinestra.
Rakeesh says: Oh yes, I suppose so.
Arthak Saurfang says: There is one thing. I’m assuming you’re going to see him. I have a favor I would ask.
Rakeesh says: Oh?
Arthak pulls out the spare arm that he had made for the meeting with the Amani and hands it over.
Rakeesh says: What’s this?
Arthak Saurfang says: An arm I designed.
Rakeesh looks down at Spinyl.
Rakeesh says: Oh, I can’t wait to see his face.
Spinyl says: I can’t wait either.
Arthak looks at Spinyl, and her small felhound starts yipping at him.
Arthak Saurfang says: Tell him it’s not about forgiveness. It’s trying to do better.
Rakeesh says: I’ll make sure he receives his message, but I can’t guarantee he won’t eject this out the airlock. At least it probably won’t hit you.
Arthak Saurfang says: It’s his choice to do with what he wants. This is something I don’t want to get anything out of. No angle. So whatever he chooses.
Rakeesh nods.
Rakeesh says: I’ll pass it along.
Arthak Saurfang says: Thank you. I’d ask what is next for you, but I imagine it’s not something you’d tell.
Rakeesh chuckles.
Rakeesh says: Business. You’ve given me an interesting set of circumstances to play with, and some curious opportunities have presented themselves because of them. I would be remiss not to take them. But… we’ll speak again. Of that, I am certain.
Arthak Saurfang says: As am I. I would be also entertainingly vague, but you know where I’m going.
Rakeesh smiles.
Arthak Saurfang says: Enjoy the show.
Rakeesh says: I always do.
Rakeesh looks to the rest of the group, and nods.
Nyxxa says: Before you go, I had something for you.
Rakeesh says: For me?
Nyxxa nods and approaches him, extending a hairstick to him that she had carved. Rakeesh looks at it, flabbergasted, but then grins.
Nyxxa says: I appreciated the advice you gave me.
Rakeesh says: Well… isn’t this just delightful. You have my thanks, Nyxxa. This is exceptionally thoughtful of you, and you certainly didn’t have to.
Nyxxa says: I know. But as I said, I appreciated the advice, and I don’t like letting that go unacknowledged.
Rakeesh says: Well you have my sincerest gratitude for the gift. I am ever glad to be of service in what little ways I can be.
Nyxxa says: You gave me a lot to think about.
Rakeesh says: I’m glad. Keep thinking, Nyxxa.
Nyxxa says: I’m not going to be able to not.
Rakeesh smiles as he takes the hairstick, and then bows.
Azgadaan says: I have something for you too!
Rakeesh almost looks more surprised.
Rakeesh says: Really?
Azgadaan says: Really! Bet you’ll love it!
He pulls it out from behind his back.
Azgadaan says: The clothes I borrowed.
Rakeesh laughs.
Rakeesh says: You know, I almost forgot. I was looking for this tunic. Thank you. I suppose this means I owe you an apology, Spinyl. Your little friend was not responsible for devouring it after all.
Spinyl says: Of course not. By the way, this is Nibbles.
She picks up one of the paws and waves it at them.
Azgadaan says: Oh, is this a pup, or is this the biggest he’s going to get?
Spinyl says: I made him extra perfect just for me!
Arthak Saurfang says: …greetings, Nibbles.
The felhunter yips at him again.
Rakeesh says: We should go. We have places to be, and people to kill. Respectively.
Rakeesh turns and heads back up the ramp with Spinyl. Nyxxa and Arthak hear a voice as the ramp starts to ascend–it’s a voice Arthak recognized, speaking in eredun. Nyxxa understood bits and pieces–it seems to indicate exasperation at being here, and then curiosity at the thing in Rakeesh’s hands. The Apex lifts up, and there is a crack as it slips through the boundaries of the planes and vanishes.
Sadras exhales and grunts angrily.
Sadras says: It took everything… not to punch him in the face.
Arthak gives her a pat on the shoulder, and she casts rejuvenation to heal the bite on her tongue.
Go'el says: Well now that that’s taken care of, we need to find our way back to Azeroth.
Arthak Saurfang says: Indeed.
Go'el says: Do we have any ideas?
Arthak looks at the magic people, and Halno shrugs.
Halno says: There are magics that can do so–
Azgadaan says: I have them, but I need an anchor.
Nyxxa says: Dumb idea… Veena, when we spoke to her, said she could dream about the tree… on the other side.
Veena says: Veena!
Lantresor nods.
Lantresor says: She does not appear to know for certain, but she’s willing to try.
Nyxxa says: You can understand her?
Lantresor nods.
Lantresor says: I have… meditated long on the nature of what Veena is, and what our travels have taught me. What binds our souls together. Once you make this realization, you come to the conclusion language is just another barrier to overcome.
Sadras looks at him incredulously.
Sadras says: Wait… you just… did that? You just… how did you do that? How does anyone just… overcome language? That doesn’t make any sense?
Lantresor grins and shrugs.
Lantresor says: The world is full of mysteries, Sadras. I can’t pretend to understand all of them.
Sadras says: But you can understand languages now!?
Azgadaan says: If you talk to her, do you have to say ‘Veena Veena’?
Lantresor says: I can try. Veena, veena. Veena. Hm. It doesn’t seem to be working.
Lantresor grins, but he turns to speak to her actually.
Lantresor says: Veena, can you try?
She speaks back.
Lantresor says: She said she would, but we may need to go to the remnants of the Dark Portal–where the roots she is linked to are still manifested.
Nyxxa says: We need to go back to Hellfire anyway.
Azgadaan says: Good idea, but I need to grab one thing… a way to come back here.
Nyxxa says: What about one of those crystals you grabbed?
Azgadaan says: Hm. It would work with some time refining it, I think. I need some time to recharge my spell stores anyway.
Go'el says: So tomorrow we’ll go back to Varok’mar, and from there I can spirit people back to the great gate, and we’ll see if our little friend can get us back home.
Sadras nods.
Sadras says: I guess it is home now, isn’t it?
Go'el says: It is.
Arthak Saurfang says: This is too. You can have more than one.
Nyxxa nods.
Nyxxa says: I was about to say the same.
They opt to camp for the night at Socrethar’s Seat. They secure the area, but as Nyxxa scouts out the perimeter her hoof clunks on something metal. She bends down to take a look–there appears to be something buried in the earth made of Legion black steel. She digs for a bit, and she uncovers a large, spherical piece of fel-steel. It seems to be a casing from a fel reaver.
Nyxxa calls the group over to look.
Nyxxa says: Looks like I found a fel reaver.
Azgadaan says: Or at least a piece of one.
They examine the curiosity for a bit, but then settle down for the evening. Nyxxa tries to pluck some of the metal off, and she is able to get some scraps with help from Arthak.
Outland Day 65
The next morning, Azgadaan casts [Teleport] again to get them to Varok’mar. They appear in the middle of the village, and they startle a few people, but no one pulls a spear on them.
Nitrogg waves at them, having found a different way back with Rexxar.
Nitrogg Thundertower says: I take it we’re about ready to pack up, eh?
Arthak Saurfang says: Correct. From here, we’re going to the ruins of the Dark Portal, and then we’re going to cross over to Azeroth.
Nitrogg Thundertower says: Alright. I don’t know how you’re gonna accomplish that, but I’m ready to see what this Azeroth is all about.
Arthak Saurfang says: Smaller.
Nyxxa says: It’s pretty great.
Nitrogg Thundertower says: I got things taken care of here. Helped move things around. Whenever I think I’m done, Mother Kaza has me lift something else up. She’s going to work me to the bone.
Kaza grins mischievously in the background. Arthak makes a moment of long eye contact with the older orc, but says nothing.
The group bids another farewell to the clan, and several of Ger’hel’s warriors had arrived mention that their leader would be there to cheer for his victory as long as he fulfills his promise.
Arthak Saurfang says: I would not have given my promise if I was not going to keep it.
The warrior nods and Arthak also mentions to Kaza that he is intending on taking on Blackhand upon his return.
Kaza says: So I’ve got to take orders of little spriglet now? Haha! I can do that.
Azuka, nearby, blinks and mouths the word.
Arthak Saurfang says: She’s going to be on another world though.
Kaza says: So I can still give the orders here, is what you’re saying.
Arthak Saurfang says: The chain of command is fuzzy.
Kaza takes Arthak’s hand.
Kaza says: No matter what happens, know it’s been this old woman’s honor to watch you spiral out of control all over this crazy place. And I’d join your clan again in a heartbeat. Pass my regards to Sagaz for pulling one over on you.
Arthak Saurfang says: I’ve never been more glad to be fooled.
Kaza pulls Arthak down and presses her forehead against his.
Kaza says: Knock him dead.
She pinches Arthak’s cheek.
Kaza says: Literally!
She chuckles and hobbles away. Arthak watches her go, and nods to himself, realizing this may be the last time he sees Mother Kaza.
Go’el casts [Wind Walk] on the group, and they take off into the skies of Hellfire Peninsula. Eventually, they fly over the Path of Glory, and they see the ruins of many of the reinforcements that had been prepared at various points to invade through the portal before it was destroyed.
After a few hours, the canyon splits, and they see what remains of the Dark Portal. The massive super structure carved from the stone that been collected from various quarries is still standing, but the doorway that had opened had been replaced by a nest of roots. It almost looks like the great tree’s root system had broken through and spread out into the earth of Outland around it.
The hooded statue visages of the Harbinger are present, but one is broken, and the other is toppled over--dismounted by the roots. The area is not abandoned, but there is not a large group of people. Nearby is a small Legion camp where there appears to be a few demons–eredar and wyrmtongue plus one of the mo’arg who seem to have set up a sort of research camp.
There are a few other camps that seem to have been abandoned–their locations smashed by massive roots. There are also plenty of bones–remnants of the corpses of those who did not survive.
They see a few small sections where they can see bright green pools that they can recognize as the blood of a pit lord. The roots seem to actively avoid those areas.
As they land, Rexxar examines one of the roots.
Rexxar says: It’s grown.
Nyxxa says: How?
Rexxar says: I last flew past this place months ago. There are more here now than there were. Stretching deeper into the canyon.
Veena stares at the tree intently.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Veena? Are you alright?
Veena doesn’t say anything.
Azgadaan says: Should we go investigate there? She seems focused on it.
The group agrees and heads toward the area Veena is staring at. As the group moves closer, Veena starts to move with them–fluttering closer and closer to where the portal once was. Veena places one of her hands on one of the roots. The edges of her fingers start to fuse into the root she’s touching, as if the roots of her hand had started to join in.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Veena? What’s going on?
Her arm fuses more into the root, and the rest of the roots start to move–almost spiraling outwards. A pinkish-violet moss-like growth of flowers starts to creep up Veena’s arm, and she continues to fuse more and more into the roots.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Veena? What’s going on!? Wait, wait!
Veena looks back, and she blinks, then makes a cheering sound.
Veeena says: A…zu…ka!
She reaches out with her other hand and takes Azuka’s hand, but more of her body continues to fuse into the roots. Her hand is pulled out of Azuka’s, and she disappears into the root system. The gap within the roots widens further and further.
Azuka tries to grab Veena, but she is pulled out of her reach, and all that’s left behind is a tunnel–and within the tunnel there are flowers and moss the same color of Veena’s body.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: No no no!
Azuka goes into the tunnel.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: Veena! Where are you!? You can’t be gone too!
Lantresor smiles softly.
Lantresor says: I don’t think you have to worry about that, Azuka.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: What do you mean!? She just…
Lantresor says: She said she would be right back.
Lantresor puts a hand on Azuka’s shoulder.
Lantresor says: I imagine you will see her again, though perhaps not when you expect it. But looking at this… one has to wonder if she’s actually gone anywhere at all.
He looks at the tunnel.
Azgadaan says: Well, she hasn’t lied to us yet.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: I don’t think she understands what lying is…
Nyxxa says: We musn’t tarry.
The group heads into the tunnel. Azuka looks around as they walk.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: You could at least warn me next time.
Almost in response, some of the petals of the flowers fall right in her face.
Nyxxa says: She perhaps didn’t know until it was already happening.
Azuka runs her hand along the wall, and a soft glow follows her hand as she goes. Rexxar is in awe as he walks through the tunnel.
Nitrogg Thundertower says: I… didn’t think I drank that much… but here we are.
Arthak puts a hand on Azuka’s shoulder.
Arthak Saurfang says: She was a good friend to you. If she said she’ll be back, she’ll be back.
Azuka Stormbreaker says: She better.
Azuka looks back at her hand and clenches her fist.
The group travels for about ten minutes. The ground is spongy, like a bed of soft moss and flowers. There is no natural light, but there is a faint glow coming from the flowers–and the tunnel seems to be closing slowly behind them as they walk.
Azgadaan says: Perfect, now no one can find us.
Arthak whispers quietly to the tree as he touches the wall.
Arthak Saurfang says: Thank you for taking care of her when I couldn’t.
A single vine snakes onto his hand as if in acknowledgement.
Eventually, they see the nest of roots narrow in the distance, and then unravel. A soft pinkish-purple light emanates from it, like a portal or a gateway. They feel the distinctive essence of magic in the air, and as they step through the portal, there is a blinding light. They are back on Quel’Danas--it seems they had stepped out of a root that snaked across the island.
September 14th
The gateway is indeterminate, but they can see it–but as the last of them exit, the magic fades from the root. They had stepped into a soft shower of lights.
Nyxxa says: …wow.
It’s chilly, and mid-day, though there does not seem to be snow on the ground. Arthak gives the root an appreciative pat.
Arthak Saurfang says: Well, I guess we should get moving.
Rexxar takes a few steps and looks up at the world he had entered into.
Rexxar says: So this is Azeroth.
Arthak Saurfang says: Welcome.
Rexxar looks at Arthak and nods.
Sadras says: I… cannot wait to see what Gramgun says about the nonsense we’ve got up to. I don’t think he’ll believe half of it.
Nyxxa shakes her head.
Nyxxa says: Though I’m curious to hear what’s happened since we’ve been gone.
Arthak Saurfang says: As am I.
Halno says: Oh yeah! There are a few things I should probably check in with Sagaz about.
Arthak Saurfang says: I should… talk to Thura and apologize.
Nyxxa says: And we…
She looks at Azgadaan and Levia.
Nyxxa says: Need to give our report to the skarvyn.
Azgadaan sends Noriyaku asking how things went.
Noriyaku says [sending]: We have returned home… my beloved is with me, as are our children. Thanks to you all. Safe journeys.
They head off, and they see Gramgun’kur in the distance–members of the Broken Blade training, rearing their beasts, going about their business. They’re home. They immediately hear horns as they get into sight range, and they hear shouts in orcish announcing their arrival.
There is a low rumble of excitement as the group enters the village. Amongst the crowd are those that Arthak had left in charge: Thura, who salutes with a look of relief and joy. Gramgun, who claps his hands and throws his fist in the air. Mankrik, Maka not far behind, and she seems to be holding some bundles. There are kids running about, and she seems to be pregnant again.
Sagaz and his family are in the crowd, and there is a sense of relief and apprehension. There are also some skarvyn in the crowd as well.
Nyxxa then sprints off, and Gramgun’s eyes widen as she tackles into him with shouts of laughter.
