August 1st
Remnii trots up beside Vel as the young draenei spirit appears in the midst of the spell. Remnii looks a bit disturbed.
Remnii says: You can see her, right?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes. I can’t understand her, unfortunately.
Remnii says: Her name is Uuna… Hello Uuna. This is Vel, and I am Remnii.
The young draenei looks up at Remnii.
Uuna says [draenic]: Hello! Nice to meet you!
Remnii is quite bewildered.
Remnii says [draenic]: Nice to meet you too… but… what happened to you, Uuna?
Uuna says [draenic]: I don’t know. The last thing I remember is bad people taking me away. It hurt, and it was dark and loud, but… the screams stopped. Now it is just dark. Or it was! But now I can see you!
Remnii swallows hard as she translates. Then she looks at Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: She was following me. We didn’t know what it was. Can you ask her if she’s alone?
Remnii says [draenic]: Are you alone?
Uuna says [draenic]: I am. I don’t know where my mother and father are. Have you seen them?
Remnii says [draenic]: I have not… But I have yet to look for them.
She looks at Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: This spell only works once a year. It may be worth it to ask if she can see anything on the other side.
Remnii says: She was following you. I suppose we can ask about that anyway, if you wish.
Remnii says [draenic]: What were you following?
Uuna says [draenic]: I was looking for Nuu-Nuu! I thought I heard him over here. My vakas and vakos gave him to me and said if I was ever scared, I should cling onto him very hard. But I don’t know where he is?
Remnii translates, and Vel holds out the doll. The draenei girl looks at it for a moment, and cocks her head to the side.
Uuna says [draenic]: It’s the same size… but it doesn’t look like him… Are you sure that’s it?
Remnii says [draenic]: Don’t worry, Uuna. We will look for your parents.
Uuna nods.
Uuna says [draenic]: Okay.
She reaches out to the doll, and touches the side of it. There is a shimmer around the doll, as if something is pulled away from the doll–transparent, but untattered.
Uuna says [draenic]: This is him!
She looks up at the pair.
Uuna says [draenic]: I’ll wait until we can find my parents! I don’t have to be afraid of the dark anymore!
The magic starts to fade, and she waves as she fades away, leaving them with the physical doll. There is silence for a moment.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That… was not what I expected.
Ishanah is heading over with purpose, clearly having seen everything.
Remnii says: Vel, come with me.
Remnii points at Ishannah.
Ishanah says: One of the anchorites told me what they saw.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We made contact with a spirit from the other side of the veil. She was following this, so it seemed. Her name is Uuna.
Remnii says: She spoke an older dialect of Eredun.
Ishanah says: May I see the doll?
Vel hands the doll over.
Ishanah says: This is terribly old. It should not have survived this long. You said you found it within one of those... creatures?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes. When it was destroyed.
Ishanah says: I dare not give voice to what that could mean… But in any sense, it seems that whatever foul sorcery was used to create that creature and torment this girl is over. But it has been so long… We will need to find a way. Something to… put her spirit to rest.
Remnii says: We do we have a census of everyone here? I know it may be hard given the recent addition of Tempest Keep… those who were born on Argus are waning…
Ishanah says: I will ask if anyone recognizes the name Uuna, but I will not hold my breath.
Remnii says: It is a lead nonetheless.
Ishanah says: Can I trust this to your care? I believe the Light brought it to you for a reason.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ll take care of it.
Ishanah says: Thank you. And I’m sure Uuna will thank you as well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It seems to be what she was following.
Ishanah says: It is possible her presence may still follow you while you carry that.
Vel nods.
Ishanah says: Would that the Auchenai were here… I have only a tertiary knowledge of their practices, and those that know them well are few and far between. I will see what Master Velen knows, to see if any guidance can be given to help.
While Remnii and Ishanah were talking, Remnii falls quiet, seeking out the guidance of the naaru. As she masks in the light of the naaru overhead, a wave of inspiration hits her. Uuna had said the doll provided light. If they were able to follow that principle, they could use it to guide her to things of similar import. However, that was not the only answer.
Remnii looks up at the naaru.
Remnii says: Thank you.
She looks to Ishanah and Vel.
Remnii says: We can commune on this literally. I besot the Light and it was with me. If we are able to find some objects of significance… it seems they can continue to bring Light to her.
Ishannah nods.
Ishanah says: I don’t know if anyone has any old relics from Argus, but if we find any… there may be something left on the Exodar.
Remnii says: That is a good start. Sweets, affection…
Remnii crosses her arms.
Remnii says: I know supplies are limited as it is. Sugar is not at the top of the availability…
Ishanah says: Unfortunately not. This is something that would be right for us to do, but inspiration will strike us. Think on it, and I will do the same, and perhaps we can do something for this lost child. I believe you’ve already done much for her just in freeing her from that creature’s grasp.
Remnii shudders and shakes her head. The Light confirms that Uuna was from Argus, her parents were not part of the same creature, and she has no living relatives. She is completely alone.
Remnii says: Do not bother with the names… I believe we are on our own. That does not mean we cannot help her.
Ishanah says: I will ask regardless. Perhaps someone knew a child of that name, and by extension perhaps the family… They may know what a child like her may like. Whether it be sweets, or bugs and playing in mud.
Remnii says: Thank you for coming to find us.
Ishanah says: I’m glad it was not an immediate crisis.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Do… your names not overlap? Could there not be another Uuna?
Ishanah says: It’s very rare. Because of long lives and lack of surnames, it made it much simpler to keep records. That was one of the responsibilities of the Auchenai to keep the name registries. So while there could have been, they would have been from a very different generation. If at all.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I see.
Ishanah says: That magic you used to commune with her, that was yours?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes.
Ishanah says: Well. The Auchenai may not be here, but were they I believe they would be glad someone of your talent were here.
Remnii nods.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s the least I can do. I did not know the nature of that exact situation.
Ishanah says: And now we do. I’ll keep you apprised if I discover anything.
Ishanah bows with a hand on her breast, and then bids her farewell. Vel looks down at the doll and she notes there is something magical about it now. She casts identify, and there seems to have been an impression left on the doll–and it had become a magical item.
Remnii says: Vel, if you come with me… I will trade you your armor for this. I would like to make it more travel-worthy.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes, of course.
They head back to where Remnii had been staying and she produces Vel armor.
Remnii says: Sorry it took so long.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s appreciated. For what it’s worth it’s… more for show, right now. Thank you.
Remnii smiles and gentle takes the doll to start mending it.
Remnii says: I know you would likely be invested in this regardless of if I was here… but thank you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: No one should be alone in the dark.
Remnii nods in agreement. She finishes the doll and hands it over to Vel before heading off to visit with Jarod–where she sees Xyrella again.
Xyrella says: I presume you want to see your friend again?
Remnii says: Yes, if he is awake.
Xyrella says: He is, and much less inclined to embarrass himself.
Remnii heads into the medical area and sees Jarod, sitting up and finishing up some sort of hearty strew. Jarod smiles at Remnii.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Remnii! I didn’t know you all were back.
Remnii offers an earnest smile and settles on the side of the bed.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I’m glad you’re safe, and I’m glad to be a bit more… aware of myself.
Remnii chuckles.
Remnii says: Your kindness continues to know no bounds.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I didn’t say anything too embarrassing, did I?
Remnii smiles.
Remnii says: No, no!
She continues laughing and Jarod laughs.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Well… it may be for the best that you forget what I said at the time.
Remnii says: No, it’s not that. I was horribly endeared by it, so please, I’m sorry.
Jarod Shadowsong says: As long as it made for a good memory, I suppose you can keep it.
Remnii says: I’m sorry! Pardon me, I should compose myself. It simply made me thankful for the things I just said. You have gone out of your way, and will continue to do so even out of sorts, it spoke wonderful things of your character. I would not be embarrassed.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I’ll do my best.
Remnii gives a small smile.
Remnii says: I wanted to see how you were, and tell you of the news.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I heard some of what occurred. That you were able to find and defeat the woman responsible for all the darkness on Nar’valas. For that, I’m grateful. I would ahv eliked to be there, but they say I have a few more days before I should be walking too far… but I should be ready in a few weeks.
Remnii says: You’ll have plenty of time to convalesce. Do you know the status of Tyrande? I bring news both personal and…
Jarod Shadowsong says: I do not…
Remnii explains the situation gently.
Remnii says: Through Ash’alah’s eyes I saw her final moments. Thus, the woman you saw was… not the high priestess. I am sorry to give you such dire news.
Jarod shakes his head.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I saw Ash’alah, and I could tell there was a weight… I’ve been around sabers long enough to know when there’s something heavy on their mind. I felt it was something real heavy, and that explains a lot. Something was off, and the ambush was too convenient. If anything it puts my heart at ease knowing that my worries and suspicions were founded and not otherwise.
Remnii nods.
Remnii says: If there’s anything we can do for the true Tyrande, we will do what we can.
Jarod also nods.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I also understand that… Illidan is with you. Does he know yet?
Remnii says: He does not know yet.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Well he will probably make a scene, so be ready for that. We’ll do everything we can. Losing Tyrande would be a big blow for the kaldorei, so if there is something that could be done, or anything I could do, I’ll make sure I’m in fighting shape when it comes time to face that monster piloting her.
Remnii says: You deserve to be there. She was your friend, and we are fighting for your people as well. Together we will bring this to a conclusion.
Jarod Shadowsong says: That monster… he was the one that performed Shalasyr’s last rites… if that timeline is how it sounds. If that’s the case, he’s going to have to pay for taking that from Tyrande too. He’s going to need to pay for a lot.
Remnii nods, resolute.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Do you know his name?
Remnii says: His name is Tichondrius…
There is recognition in Jarod’s eyes.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Shit… I know that name.
Remnii says: Many do.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I saw the bastard at Eldarath in Azshara. Forests on the east coast, back before it was a coast. It used to be a city, now it’s just ruins. We met his forces there, me and Huln. I was preoccupied, but I know Huln struck him down. If anyone could, it would have been him. That bastard was strong. There’s a reason the tauren revere him so much. We don’t have his backup this time, but we’ll be ready for whatever tricks he has.
Remnii says: No one will be alone in this fight. That I can assure you. I do have…
Remnii rubs the back of her neck.
Remnii says: I spent time in prayer while I was in the care of your sister…
Jarod looks down sheepishly.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Yeah.. that’s another thing. I hope she wasn’t too bad.
Remnii says: I’ve had worse, but I have certainly found more hospitable hosts.
Jarod Shadowsong says: She’s… devoted to her responsibilities. Sometimes to the detriment of her own health.
Remnii says: You can tell she cares a great deal. But… while I was there… I believe this will mean more to me than me by its nature, as I am not well-versed in the ways of your people. I know why night elves are dying. I know you want to hear, but I wish to ask if you want to know now?
Jarod’s expression steels, and he nods.
Remnii says: They are dying of old age. What took Shalasyr and your kin and so many more… it’s natural.
Jarod Shadowsong says: That doesn’t sound right… it shouldn’t sound right, but I didn’t even think of that. It’s been so long.
Remnii says: You deserved to know.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Do… any of the druids know?
Remnii says: If you know a druid named Thalys… the druids in the party know as well. Given this was a revelation the Light showed me over our time incarcerated, there has not been much time to disseminate.
Jarod Shadowsong says: If anything would do anything with that info, it would be the druids. I’d recommend the priestesses, but… well…
Remnii says: For this to be an option, I imagine there is some sort of greater evil at work. I’m sorry there was no grand revelation. I spent time for you and the families who have lost their loved ones… I hope it is a slight help.
Jarod Shadowsong says: There’s nothing to apologize for. It’s probably for the best it wasn’t something I could have fought or cured. Too much regret. Whatever is causing this could hurt others, but that’s out of my hands for now. I need to finish what I started, helping you out of this mess between our people.
Remnii says: We will make it right. We will get Vel and Uther home… there is much to be done.
Jarod Shadowsong says: And I’ll be a part of this. I’m done running. I had plenty of time to relax. That’s evidence of the fact I would give my right arm to get out of this bed!
Remnii says: Jarod! I will continue to say thank you. You came willingly… I know this turned bigger than what was originally thought, but… I could not ask for better help or a better friend through all this. I knew the draenei would help me.
Jarod takes Remnii’s hand.
Jarod Shadowsong says: Honestly, it’s a good thing you did. Otherwise there’s no telling what would have happened. Whether you realize it or not, you got me out of there, and in contact with your people. I did some things… even if it wasn’t of my own volition, I feel I need to atone for it. But I’d rather be here now than dead, and there’s no telling what Tichondrius would try to pull. He could have had me court martialed and executed for some drummed up excuse, but we don’t have to dance to that anymore. We’re done dancing to that tune. And I might not be the best out there, but I know how to carry a room. I’ll do my part.
Remnii squeezes Jarod’s hand.
Remnii says: I am not always good with metaphors, but the best music is not played alone. I am glad you are here. Your courage and your heart continue to inspire me. I hope you know.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I do. That said…
He looks at his bowl.
Jarod Shadowsong says: I think a walk could do me some good. Join me while I return this to the kitchens?
Remnii says: It’s not kimchi, but I hope it was good!
They head off to return the bowl and return him to his rest.
After leaving Remnii, Vel goes to find Riff and by proxy Seria.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Riff. A quick question.
Riff says: What’s up?
Velameestra Windrunner says: You mentioned other things were following me, I didn’t forget that. What other things?
Riff says: Oh. Just the things I usually see. They just tend to follow you more then most. They don’t follow you forever, they just linger for a bit before they move on.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Are they other clouds?
Riff shakes his head.
Riff says: No, that was strange, normally they be figures, apparitions, things like that.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Perhaps we’ll talk about it another day. Seria, I just wanted to extend the offer to you. If you wanted to speak to your mother someday, I’d be happy to do so. I just wanted to offer.
Seria’s face dropped for a second. There is an interest, but it’s a lot to process so she doesn’t answer at the moment. Vel recognizes this, and departs, giving Seria time and space to think.
Tol’vas asks Vel to send Naralex to try and contact him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There was no response from either of them, so it’s likely they are not at the Wailing Caverns.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I suppose it doesn’t hurt to try.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As nice as a fair warning is… unfortunately it’s not always possible given the constraints of the spell.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I appreciate the attempt though.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Of course. It’s not a bother.
Tol’vas opts to try and take a power nap and uses [Dream] to reach out to Broll. After a bit, he senses Broll’s consciousness within the dream. The dreamscape is a deep, lush fissure of verdant springs and waterfalls without the grimness that would otherwise catch the petrified trees. As Broll’s dreaming spirit appears, he is in a large bear form, and his eyes flicker open. He sees Tol’vas, and starts to head towards him–shifting into a humanoid form.
Broll Bearmantle says: Tol’vas. It’s good to speak with you again.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: It feels like it’s been a lot longer than it has.
Broll Bearmantle says: It has been some time, if only a moon or so. It’s good to see you’re safe. What of the others?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: They’re safe as well.
Broll Bearmantle says: Full glad am I to hear it.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m not sure what all you’ve heard…
Broll Bearmantle says: Much has happened since we parted. Some good, some less good. Though I presume some of the news that reached my ears is because of the work that you and our friends have accomplished.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Some of it, perhaps. I’m not certain what you’ve heard.
Broll Bearmantle says: The druids that I’m traveling with have been contacted by members of the Unseen Path. I’m not sure how familiar you are with them.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We’ve met with a number.
Broll Bearmantle says: We understand something has happened. That the high priestess has been compromised, and a demon masquerades as her. Those I travel with have been told to meet at a burrow–a stronghold belonging to furbolgs where the allied forces will make their move from.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: It wouldn’t be Timbermaw, would it?
Broll Bearmantle says: I presume you are already there, or are making plans to go there yourself?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Fair assessment.
Broll Bearmantle says: I shouldn’t be surprised that you and our friends were at the heart of this revelation.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We’ve been to Nar’valas.
Broll Bearmantle says: I see.
Tol’vas gives him a brief rundown.
Broll Bearmantle says: So you put an end to operations of the demons and the Sargerei?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: At least the ones we could find. The others are either scattered and loose, or on their own.
Broll Bearmantle says: Any victory is better than none.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: The grove up there… it needs a lot of healing.
Broll Bearmantle says: I imagine there are many groves that need tended.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m certain there are, but not all have a personal attachment.
Broll nods slowly.
Broll Bearmantle says: Thank you for telling me, but there’s something else I should share with you as well. I’ve been to Moonglade and spoken to some of the other druids. We… we believe something is wrong with Nordrassil.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We actually heard the demon… talking about Nordrassil. If they are using Lady Tyrande’s body, they’d have access to it.
Broll Bearmantle says: If they’ve been poisoning it over the last decade… even a tree like it would suffer.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Remnii’s belief… the reason our people are getting sick is age.
Broll Bearmantle says: That should be impossible with the blessing.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: The blessing stems from the tree.
Broll Bearmantle says: If the enchantments weaken, so too would the strength of the blessing…
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: There are also great beasts gnawing on its roots.
Broll Bearmantle says: It should be warded against beasts, but if those wards too have been weakened… perhaps this is a long, slow infection. The sooner we can confront the false priestess, the swifter we may do something about this slow pain.
Tol’vas looks nervous.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m not certain if you’ve heard Illidan is also free.
Broll Bearmantle says: Word has spread. I presume that was also your doing?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Yes, so there is a certain keeper who may be angry with me.
Broll Bearmantle says: From what I understand, Tol’vas, there are a fair handful of individuals that may not be keen on you. As evidenced from the fact that archdruid Staghelm is carrying the scythe of Elune, he may be one.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: He didn’t leave us much of an option. He was our way to meet with Lady Tyrande. Unfortunately, I don’t have much of a leg to stand on.
Broll Bearmantle says: Unfortunately, yes. In any sense, I believe he will be amongst the contingent that will be heading towards Timbermaw Hold. He seemed… he was not difficult to convince to take up arms against Tyrande.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: No, it seems he has a great grudge.
Broll Bearmantle says: I can’t speak as to why, but it seems you are correct.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: It’ll be interesting when he meets Illidan there.
Broll Bearmantle says: I may keep that from him. Just to see his reaction.
Tol’vas laughs.
Broll Bearmantle says: I’ll see you soon, and I won’t be alone. We are speaking with other sympathetic ears. We have allies, and we will put a stop to this nightmare.
Tol’vas frowns.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: You were never alone.
Broll smiles softly.
Broll Bearmantle says: I’m… I’m beginning to see that now. You’ll forgive me. Habits can take time to break. But you are right. You. Remnii. There was more to all of this than that failure. Seeing that is the first step.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m glad our words were able to reach you. It’s always painful to see someone else in pain.
Broll nods.
Broll Bearmantle says: I’ll see you soon, and we can do what we can to make sure our people don’t suffer anymore. Not under this crisis.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’ll see you soon.
Broll puts a hand on Tol’vas’s shoulder, and Tol’vas relinquishes direct control over it and returns to his regular nap.
After parting from Jarod, Remnii seeks out Maraad, who smiles at her.
Maraad says: Remnii!
Remnii says: Hello, Maraad.
Maraad says: Uh, yes, um… how are you?
Remnii says: Better than most days. I am not done reveling in even being close to anyone, or to our people?
Maraad blushes, and Remnii promptly looks away.
Maraad says: I’m glad you’re in a good mood. I am too, for what that’s worth. It is good to be moving on this. To bring peace to our people, and to fight alongside them for once, even if it’s against some who have yet to understand what’s happening to theirs.
Remnii says: The night elves have suffered long enough. So together we will bring this to an end. Would you care to take a walk? May I bother you?
Maraad says: It will be no bother.
They start to stroll, and Remnii laughs.
Remnii says: I don’t know how to talk about this, but I wanted to check in with you.
Maraad says: For what it is worth, I am hardly an expert in matters such as this as well… but… for starters, I do not want to say thank you, that seems wrong…
Remnii puts a hand over her mouth.
Remnii says: It’s my default! I understand.
Maraad says: Though we should speak on what happens next?
Remnii says: That is what I am trying to say. Together we can muddle through it!
Maraad says: If I can be candid, Remnii, I have been… I have a fondness for you. I have for some time. This has grown more since we’ve been reunited.
Neither of them are making direct eye contact.
Maraad says: But I cherish the bond we have formed thus far. I and I will cherish it regardless of what form it takes.
Remnii smiles shyly.
Remnii says: I… I share the sentiment. Quite, actually.
She rubs the back of her neck.
Remnii says: I… sometimes find myself at an impasse where, in lacking in comfort and reinforcement of anything, really, I… I believe you said something last night. I would like to get to know you. I know you as a vindicator. I know you as a protector. Even where there is darkness and pain at points, there is…
She mulls over her words.
Remnii says: I don’t believe I’ve gotten to know you either. Though you came to watch over me, the divide was slow to close.
Maraad says: As much my fault as the ongoing crisis.
Remnii says: We have known no peace. It is hard to get to know anyone!
Maraad says: I am… notoriously poor at speaking of myself. But I would not deprive you of the task of trying to know what there is of my own tale. I suppose the difficulty is where to begin.
Remnii says: I believe that begins easily. I also believe that begins slowly. I find no pressure here to rush as sometimes I wish to. There is much happening, but also… talks like this, spending time together, less so as daughter of the Prophet and protector!
She puffs herself up.
Remnii says: That will come naturally, I believe.
Maraad nods.
Maraad says: I suppose I can start from the beginning if you want?
Remnii says: I have the afternoon. If you do not have any pressing matters?
Maraad says: None that can’t wait. I was born about a century before the Exodar crashed. I had a sister. Only a bit older than you are…
He goes on to explain how he became a Vindicator and his life story. He starts to brush into some of the tragedy, where his sister was captured and killed by the orcs of the Bladewind clan, and how his hatred of the orcs drove him to do things that he now regrets, but he tries to stray away from the sad parts.
Later in the evening, not in the open, Vel materializes to Uther.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Uther, are you busy?
Uther Menethil says: Sorry, what? Oh. No I’m not busy. How long have you been there.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Not long. Apologies. I figured that before it got too late we pursue that thing you were talking about.
Uther Menethil says: Already? Excellent! Let's be about it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes, and privately. As to not cause a commotion.
She takes him outside of Timbermaw Hold. Uther eagerly follows. Vel is quiet and notes the eagerness.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I believe before we start anything we need to talk about a few things.
Uther Menethil says: Of course!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Something I really want emphasize is it’s one thing to just use magic like this, but it’s another to understand what encompasses. And what this all might mean for you.
There is a dire edge to what Vel is saying.
Uther Menethil says: People are afraid of what they don’t understand. Fortunately, I happen to be very good at making sure people are not afraid of things, because I help them understand them.
Vel nods. Vel then shows Uther the necrotic scar spidering across her neck with the two prominent fang marks.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I am not fool enough to think it would change your mind. I know you better than that, Uther. But I did die already. Far, far away from you. And as much as I am still myself there are fragments of me that did not survive. And I need to know that you to see that. Because there are people who will take every opportunity to discredit everything you’re working towards no matter what you tell them.
Uther Menethil says: Was it painful?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Excruciating, the parts where my soul was in my body. To the point I need to remind myself that there are pains people feel that are genuinely horrendous that I can’t even truly acknowledge anymore. It was the process of feeling your insides rearranging themselves.
Uther Menethil says: You weren't certain you were going to survive, were you?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I had contingencies in place. But those contingencies relied on people other than me in the end.
Uther Menethil says: I’ve known you long enough to know what “no” sounds like in Vel language. But as ever, a calculated risk.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I... have the Grand Magister to thank for that. He was able to humor those contingencies. But at this point, Uther, I am built to be a predator. I know this because I dissected one of my fellows before awakening him from his true death. We can be resurrected, but it’s not alive, it’s not life, it’s the reanimation of a corpse. Every organ that can be repurposed has. It’s merged everything into a single system whose whole purpose is to pull the life out of the blood I consume. My every waking hour is filled with intrusive thoughts about how easy it would be to gorge myself, even though I consciously know I will never be satisfied.
Uther Menethil says: Those who weren’t possessed of willpower? If they were to experience those things? Do you believe they would succumb?
Velameestra Windrunner says: There are going to be challenges the Sin'dorei face. And the moment you stick your foot in this is the moment you’re going to be entangled in it, and there will be no way for you to go back. Your order, for as much as I would hope they would be understanding, would be looking at the Prince of Lorderon and a Knight of the Silver Hand, protecting a vampyr and using necromancy to do it… You do realize what that looks like, right?
Uther Menethil says: You let me explain to the Silver Hand, that what it is you’ve done is no different than a sword to me. They’re afraid, but at the end of the day, all of this is no different than any type of magic or weapon. It is the spirit and the soul of the person wielding it that determines the outcome. And if you posit that what you currently are is not “alive”, then I suppose I need to readjust my definition of what life means.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m a person but I am not alive. And that is a difference that needs to be accepted as it needs to be understood. There are others among us that will not be able to pass as well as I can. My cousin, two of them- one’s a banshee and the other’s a skeleton. The third is a vampyr like myself.
Uther Menethil says: I’m confident in my abilities.
Vel closes her eyes at that.
Uther Menethil says: After all, there was a point you wouldn’t entertain the thought of sharing a meal with a troll.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Uther there is something very different about appealing to one person who loves you dearly and a group of people who don’t know anything about what’s going on.
Uther Menethil says: Perhaps, but I do consider them linked. It’s a simple matter of framing the information in a way they can understand it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And what if they can’t understand it? Are you potentially willing to throw out everything you’re working toward to help one person?
Uther Menethil says: This isn’t about one person, Vel. Well, this in particular is, learning this spell. But I am going to advocate for you and your people. All of them. I don’t see how that is more damning than this.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That’s what worries me sometimes.
Uther Menethil says: My boyish whimsical idealism?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes. That.
Uther Menethil says: But I also know if anyone can do it, it’s me.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. There are certain things I would ask you do follow my lead. Overconfidence is the path to destruction, in certain magics. And in certain dealings.
Uther Menethil says: That won’t be a problem. Our excursion on this half of the world has been deferring to others in matters of culture exchange.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. You still wish to pursue this, then? The magic of death by it’s nature is the opposite of everything you are. Like the encroaching winter. It’s a line, get too close to the shadows and you become lost, but get too close to the light then the safety of the darkness is destroyed. Like attracts like. It was once described to me that one must fill pitchers with water and baskets with bread. To do otherwise would result in crushed biscuits and a slippery floor.
Uther Menethil says: Alright.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And the emotions behind this magic are not pleasant ones, even if harnessing them buys time for positive ones to flourish. So I’m going to show you the incantations, and you’re going to draw them from where the grief is deepest.
Vel takes out a small knife and slits her hand.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Death coil heals undead, so lets start small shall we?
Vel manifests her magic in the form of a cyan skull, and lets it disperse. Uther tries to imitate her, but is unable to at first.
Uther Menethil says: I knew it was going to be difficult, but I didn’t expect it to be this difficult.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It is the opposite of everything you are.
Over the course of the three hours as Uther is trying to learn a spell that is the antithesis of everything he is, Uther manages a few motes here and there. At one point, he managed a wibbly, wobbly ball, but then dissipated.
Uther Menethil says: Alright… negative emotions…
Uther closes his eyes and he goes back to seeing Vel dying ten feet away from him, and the powerlessness and helplessness and grief and anger he would have felt. The motes coalesce and the orb forms, and it sounds like someone screaming in rage hundreds of yards away. There’s a vaguely humanoid face in the center with the most furious expression.
Uther opens his eyes and looks at it.
Uther Menethil says: I did it!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Hold onto it, and let it go!
Uther Menethil says: Let it go as in let it go, or let it go as in cast it??
Velameestra Windrunner says: Cast it, throw it at me!
With both hands Uther flings the orb and it strikes Vel in the chest. Vel then hold up her palm, which is completely healed.
Uther Menethil says: I’ll be honest. I don’t like the way that feels. Feelings I would just as soon forget. But a price to pay.
Velameestra Windrunner says: But necessary to do so. You don’t need to tell me what it is, but I do need you to decide a line for yourself. One that you’re not going to cross no matter what. No matter how much it may accomplish and no matter how much you may want to. With this magic, it’s so easy, that if you cross it once, then it becomes twice and then three times. Until eventually you don’t realize how much you’ve decayed until it becomes too late. Am I clear?
Uther Menethil says: Crystal.
Velameestra Windrunner says: But if you think you have a grasp on it, I say we can call it for the night.
Uther Menethil says: That sounds reasonable.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We have been at it for about three hours, I’d say. And frankly I’m exhausted and looking forward to being able to sleep.
Uther Menethil says: Having some sleep would do us some good. Thank you, Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I suppose I should be thanking you.
Uther Menethil says: And who knows, as long as I do my job properly I shouldn’t need to use this.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Remnii has fortunately been carrying that particular cross. Which she may be someone to seek out if you want advice on that. Given it’s part of me now, it doesn’t feel as wrong to me as it would to you.
Uther Menethil says: I wouldn’t call it wrong. Just. Unpleasant.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It likely feels similar to what the light of the Naaru feels to me.
Uther Menethil says: Well, it’s not painful. It’s almost cold. And is it possible for something to be greasy and sticky at the same time?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I believe Gil once used a similar metaphor. Clammy might be the word.
Uther Menethil says: That’s a good one.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Which, if you hadn’t noticed.
Vel grabs Uther’s hand and it’s frigid.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Like I said it’s part of me.
Uther Menethil says: Well, I’ve got all night to be poetic, we should head back.
Vel and Uther return and Tol’vas promptly grabs them and Remnii.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I have some news. We have an army. I was able to get in touch with Broll.
Remnii says: How is he?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: He’s doing much better.
Remnii smiles.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: What you and I were trying to drill into him has gotten through.
Remnii says: Before I celebrate a victory… an army?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: The Unseen Path is drawing people in. However, archdruid Fandral is on his way as well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Lovely. I’m sure his company will be quite welcome.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That seems to be the consensus.
Remnii says: That may be a good time to put in a bid for your scythe… he can’t say you have done nothing for you people.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That’s something I was considering, yes. I’d rather it not continue to be in his hands. The second question. Can we come up with, with the resources we have, a way to trap that demon so he stops coming back.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There are spells, but they’re likely a lot more temporary then what I imagine you’re looking for.
Remnii says: You would need to either trap him or kill him in the Nether. Which is easier said then done.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And the spells that assist are beyond my ability to conjure, at least at the moment.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Would your Medivh be able to do it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m unsure. One could always ask him?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m surprised he doesn’t just appear if you mention his name.
Tol’vas looks around for a bird that doesn’t belong, but he doesn’t see one. He sees Medivh in the distance instead.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Medivh!
Medivh waves and heads ever to the group.
Medivh says: Good evening, folks, I was just going to turn in. I was enraptured by this fascinating conversation with some furbolgs! They have a gaming league, did you know that? Anyways, what can I help you with?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I was hoping for a way to entrap our big demon friend.
Medivh says: That… is much easier said than done. Especially with the nathrezim, and one as powerful as him.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m just seeing if we have options to even attempt.
Remnii says: Some other people to ask will be the Illidari when they get back. Not only Illidan, but Kor’vas as well… those ties run deeper than most. I know he is not your favorite person, I understand, but he does have an expertise for these sorts of things. I will also ask my vakas. His staff is powerful, but that is banishment and not entrapment.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We do ultimately have other resources... if the archdruid is going to be joining us here.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Our typical method is imprisoning something into a tree, and I don’t think it would work with this one.
Velameestra Windrunner says: In any case any concepts they have may be adapted into something more… I don’t want to say “sturdy” but I suppose in this case it may be accurate in regards to a demon.
Remnii says: Once more people gather, we will have powerful allies here in Timbermaw Hold. I believe that is a very good thing to look towards. Even earnestly trying is better than nothing. I know how to kill a demon, but I don’t know “how” to kill a demon.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s possible, Medivh since you’re going to visit Wynn she may have some ideas.
Medivh says: She may. It is entirely possible to imprison a demon like that, but to destroy a Nathrezim outright is something else. I know one instance in which one was imprisoned in a soulstone, but it was not a permanent solution.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Is that Kathra'natir?
Medivh says: Yes I believe that was him. Meryl had a spat with him many many years before I was alive.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes, he’s currently imprisoned in the body of a friend of ours.
Medivh says: See? That’s the difficult part. These creatures aren’t like normal demons. Because they can take bodies, things get… complicated.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m worried he’s going to escape.
Medivh says: Unfortunately… unless we can come up with something ingenious and foolproof in a very short amount of time, banishment may be the only way. It’s still a victory, even if it’s only one that’s temporary.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And powerful demons take a while to reform, correct?
Medivh says: Precisely. I haven’t heard much of Tichondrius showing his face since he last was defeated.
Remnii says: He’s been busy elsewhere, I assure you.
Medivh says: I’m certain he has.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Can we dampen the influence of the fel?
Medivh says: In what capacity?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Well, there are ways to shut down other forms of magic. Or to interfere with it so he couldn’t escape.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You mean prevent translocation to the Twisting Nether?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: No, more so they have a spiritual body, correct?
Medivh says: Let me explain. When a demon is killed it’s body will rapidly decay, and their immortal soul will go back to the Nether. Interrupting the process is exceedingly difficult if not outright impossible. Unless the immortal demon soul were destroyed they will reform.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: So the demon’s soul needs to be destroyed?
Medivh says: Yes, which is not easy.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There is magic that entraps souls but they are very temporary.
Medivh says: Provided they are not the mechanisms I provided previously, like the one used to imprison Kathra'natir. But those are highly dangerous for multiple reasons.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The most I could offer is potentially 8 hours if I was to push some spells in certain ways.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: But with 8 hours we could get more time to figure out a more permanent solution? The permanent solution would take more time to set up?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Depending.
Medivh says: Not to mention those 8 hours would be 8 hours were you would be contending with a demon older than all of us combined. That could spell disaster in a lot of ways.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Everything you look at it’s going to be risky. Banishment is the easiest and safest option.
Medivh says: Even if it is the least permanent.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The soul cage ritual is specifically for humanoid souls. It’s theoretically possible it could be pushed in other directions... It does make the soul answer truthfully at least.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: So could we entrap him within your cage, use that to get his true name, then use that to bind him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Theoretically possible
Medivh says: We could try, but there are a lot of ways this could backfire.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Horribly.
Medivh says: A lesser demon I would say go for it. Even a lesser nathrezim perhaps. But I don’t think this one quite.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There is another option, if we were able to get some of his blood. The analysis spell I designed can pull true names from blood.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Does he have to be physically present for us to bind him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I mean technically having someone’s true name allows you to pull them from wherever they are with certain powerful spells. It could be an option if we defeat him and he is forced to reform, we will have time to sort out an option when he returns. It will at least give us building blocks to work with.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I also worry if we force him to flee, and ruin a plan of this scale, we’re going to see him again.
Medivh says: Almost undoubtedly so.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Considering Zalazane has come back three times…
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: If only we had some sort of crystal to imprison him in.
Medivh says: The draenei do seem to have crystals for everything, but I don’t think they have one of those just lying around.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As do the night elves and their jails.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Yes, well I don’t see us being able to trick a nathrezim that old into a jail cell.
Velameestra and Medivh, in unison, say: No.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I can try to get a sample of his blood in the resulting fight.
Remnii says: I believe we should bring this idea to the forum when more people are here. Unfortunately my skills do not lie in permanent death, quite the opposite in fact, but we can check in with who we have available if nothing else.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ideas to chew on.
Remnii says: It’s a worthy ambition, though. Does that sound good for now?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I just want to get a baseline. I didn’t expect to find a solution immediately. And it’s something to work on. Imprisoning things in trees doesn’t seem to work…
Medivh says: Well it did keep you for several thousand years… longer than the human race in fact! Or the high elves. That’s not bad.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re the same people even if we have a different name.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: If there’s something about my own kind, it’s that if you give yourself a different name, you consider yourself something different.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re still the same people, and you understood what I was saying.
Remnii goes to see her vakas one last time before bed.
Remnii says: Greetings, vakas, I hope your day was good.
Velen says: A heavy day, but one that moves steps toward the future.
Remnii says: I have faith that we will be able to see an end to this. We won’t be alone in this either. This fight is greater than us. The kaldorei understand the dire nature of what we have faced, and I am hopeful, albeit cautious.
Velen says: We will be prepared. Our people will not sit by as the kaldorei face this menace, but you have something on your mind?
Remnii says: I do. Two things. One, I, with time, would like to do something about my parentage. Before long. I have been afraid to talk about such things as I was not sure how or what I should think about such things. I am still digesting everything I have learned. I’m not sure how I should take it, or how I should feel, and the uncertainty that comes with…
She shakes her head.
Remnii says: You know my fears. I have told you a number of times before, that I worry you would not view me as the same person. Actions or thoughts would be too ambitious, too… something that would set us apart.
Velen shakes his head.
Velen says: It matters not how many times you need the reassurance, Remnii, I will always be here to remind you. You are my daughter, if not by blood, then by bond, and by soul, and by choice.
Remnii says: Thank you for those affirmations…
Velen says: This burden that I have given you. It was always yours. You may not have known about it, but you did not choose this life that you have been granted. We do not choose our paths. Our blood. But I have given it to you, and this knowledge. Whatever you choose to do, I will support you. If you wish to tell our people, then I will make it so.
Remnii says: I would like this to be over first, but as we are making a new life here… I have a limited amount of time in which I believe this will be a secret. I have told Samaara and I have told Maraad. I intend to tell Shaspira myself.
Velen says: I understand.
Remnii says: In exchange, I hope to barter this information for Yrel.
Velen says: You do not need me to tell you the risks you will be taking.
Remnii says: I know. I also wish to tell my friends I have been traveling with. In time. If we can push back against the Legion’s hold on the orcs–if they do it themselves, I’m not sure what will happen, but if we are to make headway anywhere, I do not want this to come back and be some sort of… issue in the future. This will not be the last time we interface with the Legion. If Archimonde was defeated here, I believe he will make an appearance again, and I will not have that trickling up, because there is a demon who knows. He tried to tell me before you did. I don’t want him to hold that over my head.
Velen says: Who is this demon?
Remnii says: His name is Rakeesh.
Velen says: I know his legacy, but little else.
Remnii says: He has contacted those I knew in the Horde in an effort to contact me. I do not want him to have that power over me. I am frightened, but I also don’t know what else to do. I want to control how this goes for as long as I can, because otherwise I could be taken advantage of, and that scares me. If I’m supposed to be representing our people, I want to do it with transparency and an open hand.
Velen says: There is great wisdom in that, Remnii.
Remnii says: I do not see an easy way out.
Velen says: With matters as such, there rarely is. I wish I had the council to give you, but this… this is a decision that only you can come to.
Remnii says: I have. I wanted to tell you. But I don’t know where it will take me, and I don’t want you to think differently of me. I just got back…
She shakes her head.
Remnii says: Even if you cannot support me in everything, I do not wish to keep things from you either.
Velen says: Remnii… when I said I would support you, no matter where it takes you and what you must do, I mean it with every ounce of my soul. When I said our paths may diverge, that your duties and mine may take us to different corners, never again will you and I be separated like we have been.
Remnii says: I cannot do that again. In earnest. I can’t, and I won’t. But I am willing to go anywhere–for these people, and for our people in turn. But this was something I was afraid to tell you. I am not afraid of you, I am afraid of situations that are bigger than me. But I have been assured I am not alone, so I should fear less. I believe.
Velen says: On the day I met you, Remnii… I had made a choice. Sworn an oath. To myself, to Nuuri, to you, that no matter what, you would always be safe. Our people have lost our home, and we have not had one in a very long time. But we have managed because our home is in the hearts of the ones we love.
Velen reaches up and holds her face in his hands, and puts his forehead to hers. Their glyphs appear above their heads.
Velen says: This promise I now make to you here. Not to myself or to Nuuri. No matter where in the great dark and beyond your path takes you, you will always have a home in my heart and in my arms.
There is the feeling of a magic connection forming. Their glyphs press together, intermingling. She can feel that her word of recall spell would now bring her directly back to Velen, no matter where he was.
Remnii says: Divinius is going to hate this… but thank you. You know I have cherished this bond.
Velen says: You will face trials, Remnii… not in fear, but in spite of it.
Remnii says: Before I forget… there is something I wanted to give back to you.
She releases their embrace, and she starts to go through her bag.
Remnii says: I almost gave back the headband… I treasure it still, but this came to me on the Vitiator. I wanted to return even a small piece… I have a dress that Nuuri wore.
She pulls the dress out and presents it to Velen.
Remnii says: I know that the implications of this are… not as kind as I would have hoped. But all the same, if I have something of her’s… I know you have something of her’s, something intrinsic, but…
Velen tenderly takes the dress and unfolds the dress. There is a small, soft, sad smile across his wrinkled face.
Velen says: I remember this one. I can… still almost see her in it.
A single tear drips down his face, which Remnii tenderly wipes away.
Velen says: Thank you, Remnii. This means… more than I could express with words. I shall treasure it.
Remnii says: I’m glad you would receive it. May I take my evening prayers with you?
Velen says: Always.
Remnii returns to the group after a bit and Vel sets up a [Tiny Hut] over her resting place so the group can sleep without being harassed by nightmares.
August 2nd
The group wakes up the next morning, and Elissa, Riff, and Maraad gather together to accompany the group.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As a warning, the man that owns the establishment we are going to may not be very happy when we appear.
Vel casts sending so that Soratha would at least have a warning.
Velameestra Windrunner says [sending]: Good morning, Soratha, we will be coming through the teleportation circle. Just letting you know.
Soratha says [sending]: Now? You’ve gotta be kidding me, I’m in the middle of a lesson! At least keep it down, will ya?
Vel creates the teleportation circle and connects it to the one in the Echo Isles. They appear in a cramped hut on the top floor and they can hear Soratha muttering angrily in Zandali for his class to stay focused on the lesson. As they head down, they see about half a dozen younger trolls, and one of them looks up to look at the squad, and Soratha whaps him in the head to keep his eyes forward before scowling at Vel.
They quickly see several people they had met before, including Rokhan. He immediately sees the group filing out, and he double takes and grins.
Rokhan says: Well dis not be somethin’ I was expectin’ this mornin’! How you be?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ready to finish some unfinished business?
Rokhan says: Thats what I like to hear! Did you all find another catalyst or is a trip to Zandalar in order?
Velameestra Windrunner says: That may be the only option.
Rokhan says: I’ve been making preparations of my own. There be a new face here!
He looks at Maraad.
Maraad says: ‘Tis a privilege to meet you. You are the high priest?
Rokhan says: Not exactly, but close enough. I am Rokhan.
Maraad says: Maraad of the Vindicators.
Rokhan says: Nice to meet ya. If you are a friend of these people, you are a friend here as long as you start no trouble.
Maraad says: I would never dream of it!
Rokhan looks Maraad up and down and then looks at Remnii.
Rokhan says: Good you got back to your people.
Remnii says: Thank you. It was good to be home.
Rokhan says: Lets wrap some things up quickly here for ya. How does that sound?
Remnii says: We will do whatever it takes here!
Rokhan looks at the rest of the group.
Rokhan says: Are you all plannin’ on goin’ to Zandalar? That may not be the safest trip. Those of you who aren’t trolls may attract attention… not of the good kind.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That can be accounted for with magics at my disposal. I made… preparations for that possibility.
Rokhan says: All told, don’t make too many waves and be disguised and you should be alright. I imagine you don’t have too many things to be doin’ over there.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The plan is to follow up with this Yenniku. And likely Zufli.
Rokhan says: Yeah… that may be for the best. Vanira wanted to go and see the boy for herself, but I said that may not be a good idea. Better to wait until he’s here. I’ll leave it up to you whether to tell him his mada be here… I’m sure he has all sorts of complex feelings about that. Use your discretion and take things as they go. That said, while I don’t think I’ll be able to go myself, there is someone I think I’d be sendin’ with ya as long as you got room to take him. He was there during our brief trip to Zandalar when I visited the temple of Bwonsamdi. He may be able to help ya out if ye be havin’ him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m not opposed to the aid.
Rokhan looks over to a group of headhunters and whistles sharply.
Rokhan says: Zar’Kaa!
He gestures for the troll to head over, and they see a tall, lanky troll with a strong, athletic build. He has blue skin and a purple mohawk with two thick dreadlocks growing from the back. There is a sash across his chest that has several raptor teeth, and he has a tiki pauldron, but not much armor beyond that. On his back are a spear with an extended hook, and a primal-looking axe. He also has some feather earrings.
Zar'Kaa says: Aight, boss man!
Rokhan gestures to the troll.
Rokhan says: This be Zar’Kaa. He be one of our skilled headhunters. I think he may be able to help ya out.
He looks at Seria.
Rokhan says: I believe the two of you be acquainted, ya?
