Chapter Three: The Scales Tip

Making true on his promise to Arthak, Gul'dan had three vessels built for the young chieftain. In addition, several weeks later, after the successful unification of the Thunderlord Clan he offered Arthak a gift of the necrolyte Halno, citing that while the Broken Blade had grown exponentially in strength, they still lacked any defense against or knowledge of the arcane arts--a glaring weakness given the innate magics of their elven enemies.

Roughly a month later, Gul'dan attended the celebration following Arthak's bonding ceremony to the she-orc Sadras, where he formerly congratulated the newly mated pair.

Gul'dan had taken up permanent residence in the (former) Sunfury Spire, which he was using as a base of operations for any number of his experiments, including his attempts to break through the ban'dinoriel. Unfortunately, despite his close proximity, the attack of the Thalassian Resistance on the first formal meeting of Arthak's Clipped Wing coalition was over before his arrival. Even so, upon being informed of the aftermath--including the death of Maim Blackhand--he chose to take the Warchief's body away, only informing Rend that they were "saving him."

Following the ambush, Arthak had followed Gul'dan up to the peak of Stormreaver Spire to speak with the elder, and Gul'dan chose to share his "secret weapon" that could be used for a swift end of the Resistance. He recalled the story of the fall of Shattrath and the weapon deployed against the draenei--the Red Mist--and revealed that he had been working to recreate the Mist to be used against the elves, who seem to draw upon the power of the Sunwell much in the same way the draenei draw upon the Light. He mentioned a demonstration could be offered, but he already had proof of the effects, and he took the young chieftain to a side chamber where an emaciated, babbling elf was being kept. A mana wyrm was released to the elf, and immediately, it was seized and absorbed.

Gul'dan explained that after the mist severed the elves' connection, those that survived the process became ravenous and desperate to fill that same connection. They could then be guided to those that could show them a "better way." Arthak told Gul'dan to keep the weapon ready, and Gul'dan assured him he would before providing Arthak with a sending stone, which Arthak could uses to contact him directly at any point: to offer the signal to release the weapon, or to provide any other information the young chieftain may uncover.
