The Scarlet Crusade (also known as the Scarlet Brotherhood) was a religious faction that evolved from the Knights of the Silver Hand following the dissolution of the paladin order in the wake of the invasion of the Horde and the rumors of undead spreading throughout the countryside. They were ultimately dedicated to the protection of Lordaeron and became a point of light in the encroaching darkness of the war for their adamant defense against orc, demon, and undead alike.
History
After the fall of Quel'thalas to the orcish Horde and the invasion of Lordaeron, tensions ran high as the Knights of the Silver Hand and other military forces struggled to both fend off the invaders and help the floods of elven refugees that were entering Lordane lands. With the arrival of the elves also came rumors of undead amongst the Thalassian refugees as well as in the lands of Quel'thalas as the dead were said to rise to fight against the invaders.
There was a meeting of the church following the discovery of vampyric elves in Stratholme and the resulting riots, which ultimately resulted in the dissolution of the Knights of the Silver Hand in favor of a more aggressive force to contend with the emerging threats. That force was dubbed the Scarlet Crusade, which became one half of a schism amongst the religious orders of Lordaeron as not everyone fell in line and agreed with the intensity of the Crusade's methods.
During the investigation of Uther Menethil and his companions into the plague of undeath that had started to emerge in Lordaeron, however, evidence was found that a high ranking member of the Scarlet Crusade, Arellas Fireleaf, had apparently made large donations to the organization responsible for the plague. In addition, mage lord Billy Bright informed Remnii that Sally Mograine had visited him in the past alongside Arellas, seeking support for the Scarlet Crusade's cause.
Organization & Ranks
Despite the religious origins of the Scarlet Crusade, its formation during a time of war resulted in it being structured much like a military order and their holdings were normally more akin to reinforced bastions. It also was not an exclusively religious sect, as its forces were made up of arcane practitioners and non-magical warriors as much as it was priests, clerics, and paladins.
Ranks within the Crusade were decided based on a combination of skill and dedication to the cause, thus few made it to the higher ranks without a burning fervor for the organization's mission and doctrines.
