As the group arrived in Black Rook Hold, they noticed there was snow on the ground. They were in a courtyard of a massive, ancient elven ruin. They were surrounded with dark stone coated in ivy. There were a few camps set up, and there were many more orcs, trolls, and other strange creatures she had never seen before. Some of them were elves that were not as tall as the night elves, and many of the night elves had blind folds with glowing eyes behind them.
One of the most striking features was the prominent use of ravens in the iconography of the fortress, along with banners that bore the symbol of the Illidari.
Shortly after they arrived, Nyxxa sensed the approach of one of the Illidari as they emerged from the shadows: Elerion Bladedancer. He said he would inform the Slayer of their arrival, and when they were ready for the debriefing, they could join her in her chambers in the fort. Nyxxa thanked him and said there was much to discuss.
Rak’Symma was hiding behind Arthak, having not expected all the people present. Nyxxa told her that if she needed a moment to get acclimated, there was privacy on the parapet. She said she believed it wasn’t good if she went off on her own unsupervised. Arthak offered for her to come with him, as he had some business to take care of. He said he believed it wise that, soon, they have a discussion as a group on their next steps and what they were going to do moving forward.
Nyxxa said she preferred that conversation happen before the debriefing, and Arthak said that was fine. Nyxxa informed Rak’Symma that while she was in Black Rook Hold she wouldn’t be harmed, as there was a tenuous allegiance of forces as it was and no one was allowed to start anything regardless of history.
Sol offered to set up the manor for privacy as well, but they ultimately decided to talk on the parapet. Overhead, they heard the sound of heavy wingbeats, and high above they saw the flickering image of a great, massive dragon that soared through the air. He looked almost translucent, and with him was a smaller dragon, Nethrandamus, that was swooping through the air as if the two of them were having a small fly over the hold. His presence meant that Altruis was also likely present.
Symma shrank away from the sight of the dragons as they made their way up. Zaeneas, who was definitely not slacking off, saw Nyxxa and quickly made an excuse for what he was doing before leaping off the side of the parapet.
They settled into a conversation, and Arthak said that he could take point on the matter, but Nyxxa was free to fill in things as she needed.
Arthak Saurfang says: Those of you have joined us here at the Hold, it is time, I think, we have a discussion about who we are. Captain. Rak’Symma. Thisalee. Zekhan. Some things I believe you know a small amount about. You’ve come this far, which you have my thanks, but this is only the beginning of the war. We are at a juncture where we have done all we can in Highmountain. Those lands are in good hands. But the rest of the Isles still need to be dealt with. If you intend to accompany us and aid us in our mission here, then there are things you need to understand about us. There has already been some strife of late because of an incomplete understanding. So. I want to explain. Who we are. What we’ve done. So that everything is on the table, and you can make your decisions after that. So. Let me get into it.
Arthak gave a summary of the broad strokes of everything up to the Sacking of Silvermoon. There was a history of the Horde, the Horde getting turned to the Legion, and so forth.
Arthak Saurfang says: Once we secured the naaru, the draenei god, and brought the Frostwolves back, the portal was opened, and the Horde crossed over in the homeland of the quel’dorei. The smaller elves here. Their capital burned. My people flooded out before elven magics contained us for a time. I led the taking of the island that the Dark Portal was based on. There I killed an elven champion as well as the uncle of one of the elven representatives here. My clan claimed the island in the aftermath. The Horde’s invasion was stymied by the elven magics and kept us contained in the city, but those trapped with us organized a resistance. I organized and led the response to it, a coalition called the Clipped Wing. We destroyed the elven resistance where we could find it. While this was going on, the elder Gul’dan approached me with a plan and a weapon. The Red Mist. It was a magical disease, of sorts, that stripped people of any magic they were born with or inherent in their blood. The arcane is inherent to the quel’dorei. The elder came to me looking for a plan of how best to unleash it. It was a test for me. I passed the test. I did not personally unleash the Red Mist, but I was the one that gave Gul’dan the plan for how to do so. At the same time, I informed Nyxxa of the Red Mist’s existence, and through her resistance contacts, they were made aware. Unfortunately, it did not spare them. The unleashing of the Red Mist and the taking of a manor belonging to an elven wizard named Kilnar Goldensword–also here–secured my place in the inner circle of the elder. If you observe how she looks different, that is what the Red Mist has done. The elves’ barrier was destroyed, and the Horde flooded out. My clan held the Dark Portal. Or tried to.
Arthak then explained broad strokes of the collapse of the Dark Portal and his moves against Blackhand.
Arthak Saurfang says: Once we returned, with the elder’s aid, I challenged the warchief to a mok’gora. I killed him, and things turned against the elder. Myself and some allies persuaded the bulk of the Horde to stand with us, thus Gul’dan and his people were forced to flee here, where they hoped to open a new Dark Portal and resume the invasion of this world. Thus we have followed. So. That is my accounting.
Nyxxa raised a hand and said she would add a few more things to ensure there weren’t any assumptions.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: As I recall, you were not the only orc Gul’dan reached out to about the Red Mist. It was Rend Blackhand that was responsible for Kilnar being in the state she is in. I understand why you see yourself responsible for the Red Mist, Arthak, but I cannot abide that as being seen as the narrative, at least as far as it’s being presented.
Arthak Saurfang says: Rend deployed it against Kilnar. It was my plan that led to the civilians being hit.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Arthak, I have a question. Gul’dan’s clan is a navy, correct?
Arthak Saurfang says: Yes, they are the most comfortable at sea.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: While this was your plan, could you not assume it was something Gul’dan would have done in the first place?
Arthak Saurfang says: I appreciate it, but that is not why I am telling this story right now.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I just want it to be clear who is responsible–
Arthak Saurfang says: Multiple people are. Gul’dan has his, which is the most substantial, I have mine.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: As long as that’s understood.
Zar’Kaa kept himself stone-faced through the explanation, but then he shook his head.
Zar'Kaa says: Hell of a story. One that… I appreciate hearing now in its entirety. One that I wish I had heard more about when my crew and I joined you all.
Rak'Symma says: Why?
Zar'Kaa says: Because I wanted to know what I was getting my people into. Yes the notion of protecting our world was the primary motivating factor, but I… didn’t know this Horde. Yes they helped my people, which I have not forgotten, but I still needed to know more. Not just for my people’s sake, but so I could make my own assessments of what I thought. That’s why.
Rak'Symma says: Did you ask?
Zar'Kaa says: I did.
Arthak Saurfang says: There has been, with respect, Captain, I appreciate your feelings, but they are not my first priority in this endeavor. You asked and I gave you the information we had the time and focus to provide. Now we can give you a more detailed picture. If that is unacceptable, I understand.
Zar'Kaa says: I accept it. If I weren’t able to, we wouldn’t be here. There are very few people in the world free of blood and sin. Azeroth is caked with it. I wanted it to be known that my own trepidations weren’t unreasonable. Yes, I could have made better inquiries. I admit that. But I want it recognized that my sentiment alone was not irrational.
Thisalee Crow says: Regardless, we know it now. What are we supposed to do with that?
Arthak Saurfang says: That is the second thing I wanted to discuss. This war is as much in your best interests as it is in me and my people’s. But, I also understand if because of our actions and past, our previous affiliations, any of it. If you do not want to directly aid us, you don’t have to. With the allies we have established, there will be other fronts to this war. The Illidari. The Unseen Path. Even the forces of Highmountain. But you don’t have to be a part of us. You will need to make that choice before we move on to our next objective. In addition, I must make something clear. If you decide to come with us, then you will need to deal with it. You will have to accept what we have done. We cannot have distrust. We cannot have infighting. We cannot have many of the things that haunted us through Highmountain. It will not be a repeat performance of the Red Mist. We will not do the things we did before, but we have to live with them, and win this war still. So if you are with us, you have my thanks, but you will have to deal with what I have stated.
Zar’Kaa looked confused.
Zar'Kaa says: Who said anything about a repeat performance of the Red Mist?
Rak’Symma looked at Zar’Kaa.
Arthak Saurfang says: Not you, Zar’Kaa. I’ll leave it at that.
Zar’Kaa glanced at Rak’Symma out of the corner of his eye and said he wanted to clarify something.
Zar'Kaa says: This Mannoroth. The pit lord. He’s now dead, and that means the Legion cannot control you. Right?
Arthak Saurfang says: Yes.
Lantresor says: I wish that it could be said that there was all there was to it. Though Mannoroth’s foul curse afflicted much of the Horde, they took it upon themselves willingly. His rage and fire, while it washed through the veins of many, there was no… control. His influence has dulled in their veins. An unfortunate, but important distinction. The evil of men’s hearts is sometimes uglier than the shadows of demons.
Arthak Saurfang says: As he said. The forces in our hearts Mannoroth unleashed are there. We are as fallible as any.
Zar'Kaa says: Yes. I did not doubt that. What I’m getting at is if the Legion had a way to control you all once, could they do it again?
Arthak Saurfang says: Doubtful. Not on that scale. Orcs would have to drink the blood of a different pit lord. As it stands, I still have the curse on me by the elder. So long as I hold my blade, I am shielded from it. But I am not controlled. I am merely punished.
Nyxxa said that most of the orcs that took up the fel were corrupted, but not in a way they could be controlled like a demon could be. Fel orcs could, but not those with green skin. Zar’Kaa said he could keep an ear out when he spoke with Gul’dan to see if he tips his hand.
Arthak Saurfang says: Captain, mind what influence he gains over you. Don’t worry about me.
Zar'Kaa says: It’s not you, warchief, I have the entire Horde in mind. But you are correct. It is something I’ll be aware of.
Arthak Saurfang says: Good.
Rak’Symma exhaled slowly. She seemed unsettled, and her feathers had risen.
Rak'Symma says: That was a great deal you had to share. And perhaps I am not good at looking at the big picture. I have a much more narrow focus. If what Nyxxa says soothes you, or if you still choose to bear it, that is your choice, but you are not my enemy. You have been my ally. You just helped me with the hardest thing I’ve faced in my life. So if the Horde’s enemy is the Legion and Gul’dan… then I will do everything in my power to stop him. Because I don’t like him. At all. I can tell he is cunning and clever, but he is also ruthless and will do whatever he needs to do to fulfill his own ends. So whatever I can do to help you oust him from this world, I will.
Arthak Saurfang says: Okay.
Thisalee Crow says: If Rak’Symma’s with you, I am too. I mean, that story was a lot? But at the end of the day, it sounds like you were victims. Maybe of your own fault, but that wasn’t your fault. Maybe it was of the generation before you, and maybe some of them who are still alive… but I’m not a scholar. Even I know the stories of the War of the Ancients. We caused it. It wasn’t us. It wasn’t our ancestors, but it was our people. And I can only imagine that, back then, there were people on both sides that just didn’t know until it was too late. The only difference is you noticed, and with everything you did in Highmountain, you’re trying to do better. Now, a part of me is angry that your problems are threatening our people, but that doesn’t help anything. It’s not constructive anger. So I think it’s better being mad at him for causing these problems. And I’m not the person making these decisions, but if Rak’Symma is helping you, that’s good enough for me.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: There is a reason this seems similar, because it is. This is what the Legion does. They turned the orcs into a weapon this time, because the last time it didn’t work.
Arthak Saurfang says: An orc helped stop them.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: It’s why they went after the elves this time too.
Thisalee Crow says: Well that just makes me mad!
Nyxxa says there was another thing she wanted to speak if no one had anything else to say.
Sol'chi says: Sorry my people are assholes!
Arthak Saurfang says: Everyone’s are. Yours may just be the most assholes.
Sol'chi says: That’s why I’m fighting them. But yes. Continue.
Nyxxa said that while they were there to save the world, they were not there to be heroes.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: There are times we get to be heroic, but with the way the Legion fights… there are going to be some very hard choices, and I can’t say I know what those will be. There will be times we will not be allowed to be the heroes. I believe it also needs to be said, that if you want to fight with us, you have to be prepared. I’ve learned from what happened in Silvermoon that I did everything I could to prevent the Red Mist, and I still failed. And we will fail in places. That’s inevitable. But we need to move forward regardless. This is a simple failure of communication. It can be remedied. But we have to learn from this.
Arthak Saurfang says: Highmountain was the best anything has ever gone for us. The fewest lives we had to cross. The least dead in our wake. I doubt things will go that well in the future. As Nyxxa said, this war will not allow us to be heroes very often. Frankly, personally, I would recommend casting the idea of heroes from your mind. We’re fighting a war. We’re soldiers and generals. Heroes are mass murderers with respect.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: heroes aren’t determined until the bloodshed is ended and stories are told.
Arthak Saurfang says: We just need to win everywhere we can. Wherever we can.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: We can make compromises. But it’s still war.
Arthak Saurfang says: So. Take what time you need while we’re here. Consider it. Think about it. We will help you best we can if you stay with us. We can help carry you, but you need to carry yourself as best you can.
Zar'Kaa says: I don’t need to think about it. But my crew might. They don’t know all of what you have just said. I think it’s only fair that they get a say in this too. As I said, tempering their idealism with realty.
Nyxxa nodded and said they would appreciate it if he spread it to them, and Arthak told Zar’Kaa to still think on it, as it merited thought.
Zar'Kaa says: Fine. If you insist. But I feel like my mind was made up at First Home. But I will.
Zar’Kaa looked at Zekhan and asked if he had anything he wanted to add. Zekhan considered for a long moment, but he was largely in consensus as everyone had done things they weren’t proud of and had made mistakes. Ultimately, the Darkspear plunged the world into a war that nearly brought about the resurrection of a monster, and the Darkspear were almost destroyed for their hubris. He could see what type of people everyone was trying to be, and that counted for a lot in his mind.
Zekhan says: Let me ask you this, Arthak. What do you want the Horde to be at the end of this?
Arthak Saurfang says: We try to find a home that we don’t have to take from someone else.
Zekhan says: That’s good enough for me.
Zar’Kaa thanked Zekhan for adding his voice to the discussion. The meeting was put to an end, and Arthak offered Rak’Symma an escort if she desired it, but Arthak wanted to speak with Zar’Kaa specifically about something as well.
Zar’Kaa cocked an eyebrow, but agreed. He told Zekhan to go gather the crew. He nodded and headed off as the rest of the group left.
As Nyxxa headed down from the parapet with the group, she heard wet footsteps. As she came around the corner and saw Murky running up to her. He leaped up on her, but slipped and half fell into her arms. Nyxxa ducked to catch him.
Murky says [nerglish]: Mama! You’re back!
Nyxxa gave him a kiss on the head and said she was so glad to see him. He marbled and garbled, trying to tell her everything that happened. Then they heard more footsteps, and a voice.
Masculine Voice says [nerglish]: I told you you shouldn’t be running around Murky! It’s far too icy! We wouldn’t want you getting hurt.
As Nyxxa looked up, she saw an elf she recognized. She had seen him at the end of the battle at Bloodtotem. It was the one Caria had referred to as Varedis.
Varedis Spellsoul says: You must be his mother, Nyxxa, yes?
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: …I am.
She held Murky tighter.
Varedis Spellsoul says: He heard you arrived back. Miss Windrunner was kind enough to let me escort him to see you.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I didn’t catch your name.
Varedis Spellsoul says: Varedis. Varedis Spellsoul.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Had you…
Varedis Spellsoul says: I think the two of us have some things to speak on. But I wouldn’t want to interrupt your reunion. Get comfortable. Acclimate to whatever debriefings you need. Come find me later.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I will. But thank you for escorting him.
Varedis Spellsoul says: Of course. He’s lucky to have someone like you. It’s not an easy life being a young and lonely murloc, after all.
Nyxxa smiled tenuously. She noticed that Varedis had an emblem on his chest indicating a rank or organization that was unlike those the other elves wore. It resembled a rapier with elvish writing in it.
Varedis Spellsoul says: I’ll catch up with you later. I believe our dear little Murky is in good hands now.
Nyxxa thanked him again, and Varedis turned to head back to the Reliquary camp. There were a handful of new people that were not there before. Nyxxa’s fur was bristling, but Murky was completely oblivious.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: He did say Miss Windrunner… were you with Velameestra?
Murky says [nerglish]: Yeah! Her and Murky are good friends now!
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Is that so?
Murky says [nerglish]: Yes! And Aramar!
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Yes! I will have to thank her too then. You’ll have to tell me everything that happened.
Murky nodded and started to babble about slime paintings and seashells and swimming. Levia asked Nyxxa what she made of Varedis, and Nyxxa admitted she had no idea.
Sol'chi says: He’s also kind of an asshole with the implied threat to Murky.
Levia Blackflight says: That is the same guy right?
Sol'chi says: Unless he has a twin.
Levia Blackflight says: I think I recognized the symbol on his armor. Aurum Blades. They are a mercenary company out of Quel’thalas. I know there are a few that helped out in the resistance too… Well, I guess whatever his deal is, we can find out later.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Yeah… I don’t like this though. One way or another, we have to get to the bottom of this.
Arthak and Zar’Kaa had been left alone. Arthak said he was going to try and keep things brief and he intended on having a conversation with Volrath, and he was letting him know ahead of time.
Zar’Kaa crossed his arms, not looking pleased.
Zar'Kaa says: How did I know this was coming.
Arthak Saurfang says: Our previous conversation provided sufficient hints.
Zar'Kaa says: Yeah, that’s what I meant, thanks. Look, I know it’s my right, or whatever, to be present? But I already know what you’re going to say, so what’s the point.
Arthak Saurfang says: You took great offense last time I spoke with him without you present. So in respect to your feelings, I thought you should be made aware.
Zar'Kaa says: So now we’re respecting my feelings? I see. Well, here’s what I’ll say. What I have to say to my crew is what I have to say to my crew. So I’d appreciate it if you let me do that, and don’t take away my ability to address them as such. Given your concerns, I already know what you’re gonna say. And furthermore, given this protocol that this must adhere to? I think the less of these meetings that I am involved in, the better.
Arthak said that addressing Gul’dan was Zar’Kaa’s matter, but there were other issues that made him compelled to speak with Volrath.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. If the lecture is over, go ahead and have your talk with my first mate.
Arthak nodded and headed off to find Volrath. He found him speaking to Zekhan in the Darkspear camp, where Volrath was informing Zekhan where the groups of the crew were hanging out. Zekhan nodded and headed off, giving Arthak a wave as he was left with Volrath.
Volrath welcomed Arthak back to the Hold, and Arthak said it was good to be back. Volrath said he only just arrived back from their own scouting. Arthak asked if Volrath minded if he smoke, and Volrath said he would like one too, and they both lit up.
Arthak Saurfang says: I am sorry.
Volrath says: For what?
Arthak Saurfang says: I need to have a conversation with you about your captain.
Volrath says: I had a feeling.
Arthak said there were matters that Zar’Kaa had to address with the crew that was his responsibility to talk about that he would not be covering, but he had something else to share.
Arthak Saurfang says: If I’m being frank, this is not a conversation I want to have, or should have, but I have concerns for the well-being of your crew, and as your ally, if I did not share them, I worry for your captain’s suitability in the fight to lead.
Volrath furrowed his brow.
Volrath says: In what ways?
Arthak Saurfang says: There have been more diplomatic difficulties since we left the Hold. Some of them are understandable for the sake of experience. That being said… were I not invested in your people’s aid? I would likely not have any further interest in this alliance.
Volrath says: Hm.
Arthak Saurfang says: The captain asked a short while ago if he could borrow some of my warriors for a… he wished to head some operations going forward. He wished to take command of some of my soldiers.
Volrath asked what Arthak said in response. Arthak said at first he was willing to entertain the idea, but he explained part of why he wanted them was so he could prove himself, which gave Arthak pause.
Arthak Saurfang says: As the conversation continued… he spoke on matters directly related to my people. Things that could jeopardize diplomatic relations in the Broken Isles that we need for this war, and he did it based on a source that cannot be trusted. He is also aware of your and I’s previous conversation due to that same source, which led to… a conversation that were he speaking to someone else, he would have not come away from alive. But ultimately, the thing that concerns me the most, I have sensed resentment from your captain since our meeting. I was informed by your captain of why.
Volrath says: I noticed as well. It’s not hard. But… what reason did he give you?
Arthak Saurfang says: He seems to believe that when we came to your people’s aid at First Home, that he was denied a chance to prove himself there as well. From his words, that is the root of this resentment. Hence my concern enough to speak to you on this.
Volrath sighed heavily and pinched his temple.
Volrath says: Thank you for sharing this with me, warchief.
Arthak Saurfang says: I do not want any of your warriors to die.
Volrath says: On that we agree.
Nyxxa had gone to find Altruis and she caught him as he was turning down a hallway. Nyxxa greeted him happily, and he greeted her back. Nyxxa bit her lip, and she said there was a lot they should probably talk about.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: But first… I love you too.
Altruis smiled.
Altruis Shadowsong says: I’m glad. I kept asking myself if I… should have just gone out and kissed you like that.
Nyxxa admitted she was embarrassed and worried, given she was still a demon. Altruis moved closer and brushed some hair out of her face, and said if that was a problem it would have been addressed a long time ago.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I know. I was embarrassed, but I was glad you did it.
Altruis Shadowsong says: What if I did it again?
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I’d want that… but I want to talk about something else first.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Of course.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I’ve already broken your heart once before. I have an idea of what you’re going to say, but it was because I was so focused on proving myself that I didn’t take into consideration how that would have made you feel. I was blind to how much you cared. And I’m sorry.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Apology accepted. But did you think I was going to say?
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: That I did what I had to.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Well. You’re right. If I was going to be mad at anyone, it would be Illysanna. It was her idea, after all.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: Actually… I was the one that came up with the idea.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Well maybe I will be mad at you then.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: As you should! But I couldn’t have imagined… had I known, I may have reconsidered, but maybe it’s good I didn’t given the good that came from it, and we are Illidari first and foremost. But… another thing is you surely did show yourself as my senior!
Altruis Shadowsong says: I’ve been thinking a lot about all the time we missed. About if I had noticed and realized what you were to me, and how much I cared… maybe I wouldn’t have wasted so much time, but you’re right.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I don’t think I would have been ready. I was only ready now. And I think it took the distance to realize that.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Yeah, I feel the same way.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: The last thing is that… there’s someone else I share my heart with too, and I hope that’s also okay too.
Altruis smiled.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Nyxxa, it would be presumptuous of me to assume that a heart as big as yours couldn’t be shared with more than one. It’s Lantresor, right?
Nyxxa nodded.
Altruis Shadowsong says: I figured. We can talk. I spoke with him briefly, but I could tell he meant a lot to you.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: We’ve taught ourselves a lot of things about ourselves. I think if anyone prepared me for something like this, he helped a lot.
Altruis Shadowsong says: Guess I’ll have to thank him.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: But I’m so grateful to you for so many things too. I truly do owe you my life. The life I made for myself. And that I get to share my heart.
Altruis Shadowsong says: I’m just glad that I could help. That I can… help make you smile and…
He took Nyxxa’s hands.
Altruis Shadowsong says: No matter what comes, the fact I can be a part of your life is what I’m most grateful for.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: May as we further entwine ourselves that we both continue to grow. I’d like that.
Altruis Shadowsong says: I’d like that.
They kissed.
As Rak’Symma was wandering around for a bit, Thislaee also was tagging along. They attracted some looks, but a harpy was hardly the strangest thing in the Hold. Thisalee said the place was really something, and Rak’Symma said that of all the places Blaithe could have showed her, the Hold would have been one of them, given his nest wasn’t far away.
Thislaee said she’d seen the place tons of times, but she hadn’t thought it was occupied. It was just haunted ruins.
Rak'Symma says: Did you say haunted?
Thisalee Crow says: Those were the stories. This was where the resistance met under Lord Kur’talos Ravencrest. He was a big shot. A lot happened during the war, and a lot of people died. I never came to see this place myself, but they used to say it was bad luck to come here. That the spirits of the restless dead, soldiers who died, could be found here. I don’t know how true it is, but Nyxxa did mention that they had been dealing with something like that.
Rak’Symma looked through her skull, and she didn’t see active spirits in the immediate area, but there was certainly spiritual energy.
Thisalee Crow says: I think Nyxxa mentioned there were people working on it… so hopefully the spirits could rest. I didn’t expect a bunch of people using fel magic to be worried about that, but I guess that shows what I know. So how are you doing?
Rak’Symma said that no one tackled her or held a blade to her throat, so that was an improvement. But the Hold was the furthest she had gone anywhere. Most of the time, she had stuck close to Highmountain and the borders.
Thisalee said that just meant Rak’Symma had to see it for herself, and maybe someday she could talk about the things she had seen. Rak’Symma said she thought he already knew and she looked wistfully north. She saw a raven swoop down and land on a piece of rubble, and Symma tilted her head to the side to look at it.
Thisalee Crow says: I realized I should probably take a visit back to the dream grove soon.
Rak’Symma went still, but smiled.
Rak'Symma says: You never had to stay this long.
Thisalee Crow says: I won’t stay! I want to keep helping you. I just realized… I probably should go back and let them know what’s happening. I sent a messenger, but they may be worried about me. I guess I’m sort of realizing that.
Rak'Symma says: Thisalee, you don’t need to follow me through all this. I appreciate what you said, but this is more dangerous than Highmountain. I’m not even sure what I’m going to be able to offer. I know I can’t stop you, but if you have a home to return to where you can be safe and protected by people who love you? I would be happier with that.
Thisalee Crow says: But…
Thisalee fiddled with her hands.
Thisalee Crow says: No that’s not fair.
Rak'Symma says: I know.
Thisalee Crow says: And it’s not true either! Look, I know that you’re worried that I’ll slow you down, but… I want to help you. What you’re doing is amazing! And I want to be a part of it and what you’re doing. I know you’re worried, but so am I, and that’s as much your fault as mine, okay? So if I went back, I would just worry myself silly and then sneak away again.
Rak'Symma says: I felt at least I had to say something.
Thisalee Crow says: Well hey, thanks. I’m glad you’re worried. It means a lot.
However, she didn’t think their paths crossed out of coincidence, and she wanted to chase the wind wherever it led. If she had to go back, it was just to report, and Rak’Symma could even come with her. Symma took a deep breath and asked if that was to speak with the druids. Thisalee nodded and specified it was if she wanted to. Rak’Symma admitted she had questions.
Regardless, Thisalee said she meant what she said, and the Isles were her home too. She just realized that she should report back.
An unfamiliar voice spoke up.
Unfamiliar Voice says: That is a sound plan, Thisalee Crow.
They looked around, and Rak’Symma’s eyes fell on the raven. Thisalee snapped up to attention.
Thisalee Crow says: Skylord??
The raven fluttered to the ground and looked up at them. They could see that there was a second presence in the eyes of the raven. The raven was speaking with the other voice, but it was doing so via its ability to mimic voices.
Thisalee hastily apologized and admitted she had gotten sidetracked. The Skylord said she had disappeared for weeks. A day or two was excusable, but she disappeared in a forest in a forest infested in satyrs. Thisalee said it was dumb, but time got away from her.
The voice said that was enough excuses, and the raven then looked up at Rak’Symma and said that she must have been the distraction, the one known as Rak’Symma. Symma confirmed, and she said there was a greater distraction than herself. The raven asked about the High Crawliac, and she said that was one part, and the voice asked what other parts there were.
Rak’Symma narrowed her eyes and asked if he didn’t know, and the Skylord said he simply wanted to ensure that the report hadn’t been sparse. However, he wasn’t mad. He just wished Thisalee had apprised him of her whereabouts. Rak’Symma said it was clever of him to find them, and the Skylord said that it wasn’t the first flock of ravens he had sent out.
The Skylord assured her that she wouldn’t be harmed, as Thisalee had vouched for her, and there were things they should discuss, as he believed he had some of the answers she was looking for. Normally, outsiders weren’t allowed in the grove, but he believed that exceptions could be made even for Rak’Symma’s companions. Even the satyr, even if she was monitored closely.
Regardless, they had been informed of the dealings of the Illidari. Rak’Symma asked if the Ancient Elothir had come to them, and the Skylord said the grove was one of his many homes, but that was not the only reason Rak’Symma had drawn his curiosity.
The raven then looked at Thisalee and said he was glad to see her safe, and he was grateful that Rak’Symma ensured Thisalee had not gotten into further trouble.
The spell ended, and the raven croaked that he never really got used to that experience.
Thisalee looked quite embarrassed and she said she really should have remembered to send a message sooner. Rak’Symma said that it worked in their favor, and Thisalee apologized for how strict he was. Thisalee said the Skylord was Omnuron, the archdruid of the circle, and Rak’Symma commented Skylord was a mouthful of a title.
There was joy in Thisalee’s eyes, and she admitted she may have missed him more than she thought, and it was nice he worried about her. She promised that she would send more messages if they didn’t go there immediately.
She met up with Arthak, and informed him of the invitation as he showed her around the Hold.
The group met at the meeting chamber for the debriefing. Illysanna was waiting for them. Next to her was Altruis and Jace, and also Velameestra Windrunner was present.
Illysanna welcomed them back from their successful venture from Highmountain. Arthak wordlessly handed a sheaf of parchment to Illysanna, and when she asked, he explained it was his report on Highmountain and other pertinent matters. She grinned as she scanned through it and thanked Arthak.
A verbal report was given on what happened with Highmountain by Nyxxa, and Illysanna said the emissaries would be welcome with open arms. The support of the drogbar and the harpies was quite unexpected. She made her formal introduction to those who were new and said that if they required anything, they were welcome to ask.
Illysanna said that keeping the Hammer of Khaz’goroth out of the hands of the Legion was definitely a boon.
She explained there had been developments in various regions. The Horde had made landfall in Stormheim and had constructed a forward base, but the renegades have also appeared there as well. The circumstances in Azsuna had been monitored, and the ghosts of Nar’thalas had continued to keep the demons at bay. However, they caught at least a handful of Legion spies trying to learn more about the city. They were questioned, and it was determined that they appeared to be scouting an object of peculiar interest: the Tidestone of Golganneth.
In Nyxxa’s head, Vaerux confirmed the object rang some bells. He said he knew it was in the city before it was destroyed, but he seemed confused and distressed. All he knew was that it was involved somehow, but he couldn’t remember. He thought it was connected to the curse.
Nyxxa said she had additional information about the situation in Aszuna. Before Vaerux was Vaerux, he was a captain Moonfang from the city. Before its destruction, he had made a bargain to try and get it spared, but that failing struck up a deal with Xavius to save his family, which resulted in a curse.
Nyxxa recited the rhyme.
Two souls spared, Two souls bound. Two fates unshared by calamity of the drowned, Nowhere to be found.
Thy wretched name, riven. Thy wretched soul, unforgiven.
Two for one life, spared of this one strife, Bourne into a world of tragedy rife.
By pact profane, eternally rue.
Broken only by two:
A selfless soul selfishly given,
And a selfish soul selflessly given.
Altruis scratched his chin, recognizing the name Moonfang, and Nyxxa nodded, confirming the connection. Nyxxa had thoughts about how she could approach the ghosts, as she could look like a night elf, and if she was a familiar face it could be helpful.
Zar’Kaa asked what would happen if the Legion obtained the Tidestone, and Illysanna said she didn’t know, as they didn’t know what it could do. The fact the Legion was seeking it was reason enough to prevent them from finding it. Illysanna said it was not unreasonable to think that Azshara may have used it to destroy the city.
Nyxxa thought it was wise to make contact, and Illysanna said that there was also the matter of the missive the Illidari intercepted.
Volrath spoke up on behalf of the Darkspear scouts and said that while they were scoping out the Legion forces, they spotted the beast that had attacked them at sea. It had come up on the western side of Faronaar on more than a few occasions, and demons passed into and out of its mouth. However, it was different from last time. The same demons were coming in and out, and it seemed they were using the beast as a specific portal. At one point, they returned with a payload that was heavily guarded. There was a thick metallic device on it. However, it seemed Bakaz expressed he might be able to determine something, but he wanted approval from Illysanna first. He also likely expected some sort of payment.
Zar’Kaa said if they really wanted to understand the demon’s operations they’re gonna need to find a way into the portal. Arthak said that was an eventual possibility, but there were other more easily managed things to deal with.
Altruis then explained he had gotten back from scouting around Felsoul Hold near where they believed the Temple of Sargeras was. The greater area had already been touched by fel, and there was a Legion ship present with a magicked generator that Altruis was unfamiliar with. From what he understood, the ship seemed to be the central command ship. He then looked at Vel and said that the object was of particular interest to her people, and Vel confirmed Magistrix Kilnar had been focused on it.
In addition, Altruis said that he had seen the shield around Suramar City dropped, and he saw several orcish ships and demons make their way into the city. They were not attacked. However, he could not infiltrate further. However, he did find a small disc, which he produced.
He said the object had some sort of magic. It was an illusion of some kind, and they had been unable to activate it. He believed there was something preventing Altruis from doing so. It also wouldn’t work for Nethrandamus. Jace said that it seemed to be some sort of encrypted message, and he believed the activation could be done by touch, but there were limitations. He thought he might have been due to the connection to fel magic, and because Nethrandamus was actually a dragon.
Arthak walked up and touched the object. It immediately came to life, revealing a woman who was heavily cowled. She appeared to be a withered elf not too dissimilar to Runas.
Image of First Arcanist Thalyssra says: Ith'el kanesh! I am Thalyssra of the shal’dorei. First Arcanist of the Court of Suramar. Or, I was. Please, my people have made a dire pact, one that spells doom for this world. Time is short. If you found this message, then you are capable of finding me as well. When you can, make haste to Suramar. You are our last hope. Ith'nala kanesh
The illusion dissipated, and Arthak said it added a certain amount of urgency. Jace considered the object, and he said he didn’t think the message was unique. He thought there may have been other messages that were left. But reaching out to her was likely wise.
Altruis said that he was pretty sure that she was a member of the ruling mage council before the War of the Ancients, and Vaerux confirmed. Regardless, it seemed she had more information and it was likely wise to reach out to her when they went into the region. However, it also could have been a trap. Altruis pointed out where he found the object on the map of the Broken Isles.
Rak’Symma mentioned she knew there were two harpy flights in the area. One was at Cliffclutch Roost near Highmountain, while another was in the cliffs near Suramar City. But she had never been in contact with them.
Azgadaan had also been able to decode the cypher on the missive from the potential rebels.
Nyxxa said that it might be best to try and make contact with Thalyssra, and once they’ve established contact, they double back to Aszuna. Altruis said he had no problem taking them back to where he found the message.
It was asked when they would leave, and they opted to stay in the Hold for a day or two. The meeting was dismissed, and Nyxxa wanted to speak with her in private. As did Arthak at a later juncture. As he turned to leave, he caught Levia’s eye, and also glanced over at Vel.
Levia regarded the warband and asked them if they wanted her to ask Vel if she wanted to come with them, as her expertise with the ghost stuff in Aszuna would probably be beneficial. Nyxxa agreed that she wanted to make contact with the ghosts as people, and Vel’s insights would probably be valuable in that regard. Sol said it would be nice to get to know Levia’s friend.
Levia turned around and called to Vel, who had been examining the message device more closely. The other elf immediately looked up, and Levia asked if she wanted to go with them to Suramar and Aszuna. Vel was silent for a moment before she admitted that she had intended on asking more formally, and Levia laughed.
Nyxxa said that if Vel wanted it, she could get her a copy of the curse she had recited earlier in the meeting. Vel assured her she already had it memorized.
Levia looked at Nyxxa with a grin that said “yeah, she’s pretty great, huh?”
Levia also sauntered over to Vel and mentioned that Arthak wanted to talk to her, but she assured her that she was going to be there as well.
Zar’Kaa had made his way to the Reuniter along with a smattering of other warband members. The first person that caught Zar’Kaa’s eye was Zuni, who was chatting with a handful of people with surfboards that were leaning against the side of the cliff. There was Aramar, a Revantusk, a handful of elves that seemed to be Illidari, and two more high elves. He was gesturing animatedly as he regaled them with a story. As he saw Zar’Kaa, he said he’d catch up with them later. The group headed off as Zuni went to join the rest of the crew. He happily greeted Zar’Kaa and pulled him in for a hug.
Se’jib was also in the background of the ship.
Zar’Kaa thanked the crew for coming and then launched into what he wanted to say.
Zar'Kaa says: Highmountain was an experience for all of us that went. It was dangerous. It was enlightening. But for me it was a bit different. On the first night we arrived, I was contacted using a dream spell. The one that reached out to me was the man we came here to defeat. Gul’dan. He said he watched me using his powers. He said he could teach me to use the powers he wielded. The fel. He also showed me visions of who else he had been watching. Some of whom were you. Some of whom were the warband. When he was finished with me, I was conflicted and scared. I didn’t know who I could tell, and I feared if I did that I would immediately be suspected of betrayal. So I kept it to myself for a week or so. And I thought about it hard. He left the door open to reach out to him, so I did. I wanted to find out what his intent was with me. I wanted to see what he could reveal. If perhaps, even with his cunning, I could derive something useful by gaining his trust. He offered to teach me, and I took the deal. It was a choice I made. I do not regret I made it. I own it. But I had a chance to let all of you know as soon as I could, and I did not take the opportunity. That’s not an excuse. I’m just explaining why. You both deserve to know. I’ll stop there for now. If any of you want to voice your opinions.
The crew took a moment to consider, and Volrath spoke up.
Volrath says: Captain, what were you hoping to accomplish with learning from the enemy?
Zar'Kaa says: To use their information against them. To become stronger. So I can help win this war, so we can return home, but it was also because…
He closed his eyes shamefully.
Zar'Kaa says: Because I desired the power for myself.
Volrath nodded.
Volrath says: Okay. I’m not a sorcerer. I don’t understand the intricacies of magic. I won’t pretend to be an expert on all this, and frankly I don’t give a damn that you started up on this path. But I won’t lie and say what you’re doing isn’t reckless. This man. Gul’dan. He deceived an entire nation of people. Fooled them into doing them what he wanted for decades. With all due respect, Zar’Kaa, I don’t think you have much chance in pulling one over on him.
He looked at the rest of the crew.
Volrath says: Zirazi. This magic. You’ve seen them use it. What do you know about it?
Zirazi says: The chaos magic that these warlocks or demon hunters… it’s similar to one of the traditions we know. It’s not forbidden, but it’s dangerous. The demoniacs that practice this magic… it’s an old tradition, one they’ve been mastering for a long time. It’s like playing with fire. I don’t dabble much personally, but we’ve studied it.
Volrath says: Right. Zar’Kaa. Captain. I’m going to answer a question, and I want you to be honest with me. And everyone here. Why did you accept this position? Why did you choose to be the captain of the Reuniter?
Zar'Kaa says: Because I believed this was something I could do. Reuniting our people. Because I wanted to prove myself. Because, for once, I didn’t want to be… the titi of the tribe. I wanted to be something more than that. I’ve been learning that, given how my role has changed, more is required of me. Better is required of me. I’m still figuring out what that is. How to be better. But… it’s not just in my hands. I’ve made mistakes. I haven’t always represented our people well. I let my feelings get the better of me. Instead of looking out for your interests, I have been selfish. I hope to make right on that. But I may not be able to do it as the captain, if that is not what you all want. It’s not a matter of being anointed. I have to earn this. If I am not wanted in this role, that’s not my choice to make. It’s yours.
Volrath says: Well said, Zar’Kaa.
He addressed the crew.
Volrath says: That being said. I hold a vote for us. All of those in favor of Zar’Kaa remaining in the position of captain, hands up.
Some hands raised. Zuni. Zekhan. The cook. Zirazi. And a few others as well. Volrath nodded, and they lowered their hands.
Volrath says: All that believe the captain should have his position revoked, hands up.
More hands raised including Rekki. The gunner. Volrath himself.
Volrath says: That settles it. Zar’Kaa, until further notice, you are no longer the captain of the Reuniter. I will fulfill that position. Zuni, you’ll act as my first mate. Zekhan, do you believe you can operate as the bosun and sailing master?
Zekhan nodded.
Volrath says: We’ll see to it about filling those positions. Zar’Kaa, I’m assigning you to the liaison with the Horde and its allies. I want you to keep learning these lessons. I want you to realize the truth about what we are trying to do here. And if we all survive this, we’ll have another discussion. We’ll see if we need to make any adjustments. But I sincerely hope that you have a different reason for wanting to be captain if you’re ever to take up the mantle again.
Zar’Kaa looked like he had been speared through the chest, but he nodded.
Zar'Kaa says: By your orders, captain.
He removed the shark tooth that identified him as captain, and he hesitated, but then slowly put it in Volrath’s waiting hand.
Zar'Kaa says: The ship is yours, captain.
Volrath says: Back to your duties everyone. Dismissed.
The crowd dissipated. Zuni approached Zar’Kaa and put a hand on his shoulder with an apologetic look as he passed by. Zar’Kaa looked around, taking in that the ship he had named was no longer his. He fought the urge to cry, but he avoided the looks of anyone there as he retreated off the ship. Volrath shouted after him.
Volrath says: Zar’Kaa, for the record, there’s never been titis on this ship. Regardless of who is the captain.
Zar’Kaa headed off to take some time to be by himself as he walked away, devastated. Nyxxa had put a comforting hand on his shoulder as he passed.
Zar'Kaa says: There’s no peptalking me out of this one.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: As I said earlier, failure is inevitable. But you must move forward regardless.
Zar'Kaa says: One more thing. I haven’t told Illysanna. I would ask for your help with that.
Nyxxa Murkthorn says: I can help with that.
Zar'Kaa says: Thanks. I’ll find you later.
Sol'chi says: The mansion is there if you need it. There are signs to put on your door if you’re willing to accept guests. So if you want to be somewhere in comfort, feel free.
Zar'Kaa says: Finding places to be alone has never been a problem. But thanks.
He gave Sol a bump on his chest with his fist.
Arthak had managed to secure a meeting room with some supplies to make either tea or coffee when Levia and Vel arrived to meet with him. He mentioned he understood it was polite for conversations to happen over drinks, and he said he preferred stimulants, and asked if Vel had a preference for tea or coffee.
Vel indicated she preferred coffee and crossed her legs to wait as Arthak got the coffee brewing.
Arthak thanked Levia for arranging the meeting, and Vel for agreeing to meet with him. He again apologized for the earlier encounter that they had had in the early hours of the morning.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Don’t think anything of it.
Vel had switched to orcish, even though Arthak had been using darnassian.
Levia Blackflight says: I’m just here to make sure I can be present for you guys.
Arthak Saurfang says: You know our tongue?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I do. I have an interest in languages. If I hear one, I tend to learn it.
Arthak Saurfang says: I’ve not had time yet to learn your people’s. Ultimately… situations at the moment necessitated more practical choices.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s not that dissimilar from darnassian.
Arthak Saurfang says: Why I thought it might be common ground… but if you speak orcish, I’m glad to use my native tongue. It’s not often these days.
Arthak slid a mug of coffee over to Vel, who took it, and poured red liquid from a vial into it that she promptly stirred in with magic before she took a sip.
Arthak Saurfang says: To the matter at hand.
Velameestra Windrunner says: To the matter at hand. Whatever that might be.
Arthak Saurfang says: I should make it clear that, what I’m intending to tell you, I originally had no intention of telling you. Or allowing any of your people to know. But Levia spoke to me.
Vel’s eyes flickered over to Levia, who nodded and said she had felt it was something that was good for her to know.
Arthak Saurfang says: Levia trusts you. That’s enough for me.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright, warchief. Then what is this intel?
Arthak Saurfang says: We’re not just here to stop the Legion. That is our primary objective, but it is not our only one. Our secondary objective is to find somewhere to settle. We are leaving, once this is done.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …You’re leaving Quel’thalas?
Arthak Saurfang says: We are.
There was a long bead of silence.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And… tell me, warchief, why are you telling me this?
Arthak Saurfang says: You specifically?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Me specifically.
Arthak Saurfang says: As I said, Levia trusts you, and I sense Levia’s sense of people. I will admit I… frequently do not understand your people well. Despite my efforts. But, Levia thinks highly of you. That speaks well to not just morally but also… you seem competent and sensible.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So you have… no intention of telling Magistrix Goldensword?
Arthak Saurfang says: I’m telling you. I’m hoping. Hoping that however you decide to use that information, me and my people would not end up regretting it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So you’re putting the pressure of who knows this on me instead of taking it on yourself? Is that what you’re doing?
Levia Blackflight says: That’s not fair, Arthak.
Arthak Saurfang says: I don’t trust Goldensword. I’m also…
Arthak sighed and looked at Levia.
Arthak Saurfang says: I’m trusting who you vouched for. But I’m not going to control who she takes this information to.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Warchief, I understand the notion of valuing the safety of one’s people. Keenly. But it should be understood that, regardless of Levia’s opinion of me, I cannot keep information from my superior.
Arthak Saurfang says: I’m not asking you to. Regardless of who you tell, I am operating under the hope that it is the right choice. What you do with this is your choice.
Velameestra Windrunner says: In the hope that I make the right choice for you? For your people?
Vel’s eyes had flickered magenta for a brief moment.
Arthak Saurfang says: If… there’s… an understandable… your people have every reason and every right to seek vengeance for what we’ve done. Our flight from your homelands will present a uniquely vulnerable point for us.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We also have every reason to preserve our own people.
Arthak Saurfang says: I agree. I would ask that when we leave… we preserve both our people’s. At least for the immediate time.
Vel leaned back in her chair.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Then it would be my recommendation, Master Saurfang, that you take that reasoning to Magistrix Goldensword directly. Whether you trust the magistrix or not, she also has every reason to preserve our people. Regardless, she’s going to know. But it may shine more to your intent if it came from your mouth instead of mine.
Arthak Saurfang says: Very well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Thank you for the information. Is that all I was needed for?
Arthak Saurfang says: That is what I wished to speak of, yes. Is there anything you would wish to ask me? It’s only fair.
Velameestra Windrunner says: For the time being, no. But we will be sharing a road. That may change in the future.
She got to her feet and finished off the remainder of her coffee.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Thank you for the coffee, Master Saurfang. Have a good evening.
Arthak Saurfang says: You as well, Lady Windrunner.
Vel glanced over at Levia again, and then went to vacate the room.
Arthak Saurfang says: Hrm. Would it be better if you or I approached the magistrix for a meeting? To set it up.
Vel considered for a long moment.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …I’ll arrange a meeting for you, Master Saurfang.
Arthak Saurfang says: You have my thanks, Lady Windrunner.
Vel left, and Levia looked at Arthak.
Levia Blackflight says: Well that went pretty well.
Arthak Saurfang says: So it did.
Levia Blackflight says: You know you really could have led with the whole… you can do as you wish thing.
Arthak Saurfang says: That’s what I meant to… that’s what I thought I was saying the first time.
Levia Blackflight says: It came across more loaded than I think you meant it to. But you got there. Thanks for listening, by the way. I think this is for the best. I’m going to go check on her. I’ll catch you later, okay?
Arthak Saurfang says: Okay.
Levia jabbed Arthak in the arm and went to go after Vel as Arthak took another sip of his coffee and stared into the blank air for a while.
Nyxxa had gone to meet with Mindi, but she then saw Varedis’s feet up on the table in the room they were standing.
Mindi gleefully informed her that Nyxxa’s care package had arrived, and he gestured to Varedis. Nyxxa said that explained a lot, but she wanted to know more. Mindi assured them he would ensure the conversation was private.
Varedis said that he was sure his presence was alarming, and Nyxxa said she had been considering reaching out, but she wanted to thank him for getting Caria to stop.
Varedis Spellsoul says: You have no reason to trust me, but I am willing to prove myself. So before we get started, one question. Whatever you want. About any topic. If it’s helpful, perhaps we can call ourselves business partners. Alternatively, we can get right into our own business.
Nyxxa said she may have to think on the question, but first and foremost, she had to inform the Slayer. Varedis said that was fine.
He explained he was with the Aurumn Blades, which was run by Kilnar’s daughter. Rakeesh had requested that Varedis make his way to the Broken Isles, and he was there to assist the Gold Standard. All he asked was that they don’t inform the Gold Standard about his allegiances.
Nyxxa asked what everything was going to cost, and he said it wouldn’t cost much. He withdrew a large scabbard that had a lot of swords in it, and he rolled it across the table. It spilled extremely powerful magical sword on them. It was an entire collection. There were easily two dozen.
He said that he made a hobby of collecting weapons from those he came across. He said that if she desired to devour Caria’s soul, he could give her a simple name that would make it possible. However, he wanted the weapons Caria wielded.
Nyxxa agreed.
Varedis said he could give her information on whereabouts and assistance and further intel. However, he wanted Nyxxa’s own warblades as payment for that as the aldrachi were of specific interest to him. But she need not give them to him until after Caria was slain.
Nyxxa asked how he got involved in everything, and Varedis was amused by the notion of her wanting his backstory. He said he was a mercenary for a long while. Killing was second nature to him, but then his heart just wasn’t in it after the Second Trolls Wars, so he retired.
But then he found his first demon. It was a doomguard. It was exhilarating and interesting. He chased the high for a time, and eventually he crossed paths with their mutual friend. They fought, and they were unable to defeat each other. But, it was a relationship that sparked many opportunities.
Nyxxa focused on him, but she couldn’t find any secret agenda. She agreed to the first deal, at least, and Varedis whispered the true name of the doomguard that resided within Caria. He headed off, and Mindi mused that Varedis was certainly something. Nyxxa agreed he was interesting.
Nyxxa asked Mindi if she could perhaps be put in contact with the succubus with Rakeesh, Spinyl, as she had questions about succubus covens. Mindi said he couldn’t promise answers, but he could at least promise a message.
