June 3rd

As the battle in the hive continues, the fey dragon soars upward and starts to cast a spell as it materializes into view.

Tol’vas uses another gravity sinkhole on the wasps closest to him. The largest wasp has its thorax ripped from it, killing it immediately, and the swarm gets crushed while the sole remaining ones buzzes, dazed.

The hive tunneler next to Vel burrows into the ground to escape, and the swarm of black scarabs starts to swarm Uther, but they are unable to land a hit. The tunneler next to Remnii also tries to flee, but the guardian of faith squashes it.

It seems like the critically wounded members of the hive are in full retreat. In the chaos of this, the group hears a rumbling under the ground as explosives start to go off. It seems like some of the caves are collapsing down below.

Black scarabs start to crawl up on top of Seria, but she is able to smash them aside. However, the wasp next to her continues to try and sting her. A hive ravager leaps down into the basin now that it has a read on the battlefield and it hisses at Vel while a hive swarmer tries to lunge for Makasa.

A wasp swarm buzzes into Vel’s face in the midst of the cold snap but is unable to land a hit as it is buffeted by the icy winds. Makasa meanwhile gets assaulted by another wasp swarm. However, Seria grabs Makasa’s arm and casts dimension door. They disappear in a flicker of emerald energy before reappearing next to Uther.

The hive reaver that was on Seria swarms at Vel, but it is buffeted by the cold and opts to retreat. Another swarmer goes for Vel, but it is unable to find an opening between her arcane shield and her deft movements. Another swarmer unloads on Ember and is much more successful.

The scarabs on Vel start to bite her and she loses the concentration on the banishment. Another swarmer swarms but it is unable to land a hit. Seeing everyone else in the basin had gotten out, Vel also disappears in a swirl of arcane energy and reappears on the lip.

The hive starts to swarm after the group. Ember releases a firestorm on the open hive. A gauntleted claw of fire appears around her hand, and three circles of flame shoot up to the sky and shoot outward before a rain of fire opens up on the hive. It obliterates entire sections of the swarm.

Ember Flintlocke says: Right! Time to go!

It seems magic of that strength even affected the scarab swarms. Makasa heals Li Li with her poultices and a swig from a flask. Her eyes flicker open.

Li Li Stormstout says: Oh crud! Thanks for that.

Remnii gets stung by a wasp, and Li Li heals herself and Makasa with a tealish blue mist in turn as she starts to run.

The queen, while injured, continues to pursue. It seems to speak in a vibrating tone, but it almost seems to be words. All the other members of the swarm look towards her.

Remnii starts to run and uses mass flash of light and the fey dragon starts to try and polymorph the queen, but she is seemingly able to resist. Uther gives the closest hive ravager a parting gift in the form of a smite. It staggers, its scythe-like talons digging into the earth, but he swings again, and then a third time with a quickened green-flame blade. This final strike leaves its head smashed into the ground as he hurls it back into the hive.

The fey dragon stays back to try and draw some attention before it disappears, but Tol’vas feels the connection between himself and the fey dragon start to sever. The wasp queen continues to whisper that strange language as she retreats, but Ember uses a wall of fire to try and block off some of the enemies.

Remnii casts another guardian of faith and both pushes and enhances it to make the image of a large nauru that serves as an even larger bug zapper. Meanwhile, Broll covers the rear by fending off some of the pursuing silithids.

Li Li Stormstout says: Keep it together, big guy!

Li Li works on keeping Broll up with the same tealish-blue mist she had conjured before.

Tol’vas gravity sinkholes behind the group as he continues to run, and Uther blesses several of his allies. Vel casts slow on some of the larger creatures, the signature spectral chains of her spell wrapping around them and bringing their pursuit to a crawl.

Seria casts sleep through her staff and several of the creatures behind them hit the ground as they are enshrouded by light green smoke.

Some of the biggest creatures are gaining, but Remnii triggers off a mind blast. A smoky undertone seeps from her eyes, and she clenches her fist in the air as a pulse radiates from it, and several intense emotions of dread surge within the swarm. One of the closest ones is kicked off its legs and thrown back.

The remnants of the swarm are dissuaded, and they start to return to the hive. The group doesn’t stop running until they reach the road.

Uther Menethil says: I do believe that’s everyone’s conditioning for the day. Is everyone alright.
Remnii says: Is everyone accounted for?

Everyone seems to be, and there is a collective sigh of relief. Vel’s cold snap fades, and she wipes blood from her eyes, not winded at all.

Syeori Sunwalker says: That. Was. AWESOME. Li Li, what were you doing in there???

However, Remnii feels a sharp pain in her arm, and she swats at a large mosquito. Everyone feels itchy and fatigued. Seria gets faint, and Riff catches her, but she realizes that her damage might have been more severe than she thought. Broll is still carrying Reno, but he sets him down.

Velameestra Windrunner says: It may be best if we reset our camp.
Uther Menethil says: I agree.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Yeah, we can talk about whatever the hell you all were doing in there after.
Ember Flintlocke says: You have my thanks. I may have been able to handle it myself, but I don’t know if I would have been able to get this crazy one out.

She gestures to Li Li.

Ember Flintlocke says: Ember Flintlocke. It’s good to meet you. I can help set up camp if needed.
Remnii says: We’ve been traveling by night, so this is the middle of our night.
Ember Flintlocke says: I can see why you may prefer that. The sun is brutal here, but can't say I mind the heat.
Remnii says: I don’t mind the day. But yes, we should try to recoup.

Remnii feels legs on her leg, and she shrieks as she sees more bugs. The bugs disappear as she shakes them off and she crushes one beneath her hoof. A bug crawls from behind Seria’s ear, and Vel sees one crawling out of her spellbook. She smashes it, and prestis her spellbook.

Velameestra Windrunner says: It seems we have stragglers. It may be wise to go through our things.
Broll Bearmantle says: I believe I know what these things are. I think this may have been a silithid hive.
Velameestra Windrunner says: What’s a silithid? Beyond those.
Broll Bearmantle says: Dangerous creatures. And intelligent. The most powerful among them are as keen as any man. I cannot say for certain, but I believe their leader may have been more than a simple insect. I do not know much, but I know the kaldorei sacrificed much to keep them at bay a thousand years ago. I did not participate in the War of the Shifting Sands, but I know many lives were lost to prevent them from spreading further. It is troubling to find them. But I know little. I’m sorry.
Velameestra Windrunner says: In that case, they may be worth further analysis. If any more are found, just give them to me.

The start to set up camp, and the group picks through their stuff, but they just keep finding more. Seria lays down to try and go to rest, but there is a constant whisper at the very edge of her mind, and she jolts back awake. Two more bugs had crawled up her arms. She smashes them, but it seems they are unable to get any meaningful rest.

Samaara says: These things are resilient. It will take us a while to extinguish all of them unless we put some distance between ourselves and the hive.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Then I suppose we’re marching.
Ember Flintlocke says: I might be able to burn them out, but you might get a bit singed if I try. I’m a bit tapped out after all that.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’ll just set myself on fire.

Vel starts to collect the bugs as they travel for another hour, and with some aid from the other keen eyes, Vel is able to track down the remainders of the insects.

Exhausted, the group resets their camp and settles in for their long rest. Syeori turns attention to Li Li.

Syeori Sunwalker says: Now that that’s taken care of, what were you doing down there?
Li Li Stormstout says: Oh, well, I was traveling with Reno and he, um… thought it would be a good idea to take a look around the hive. He saw them bringing things back, collapse the hive, and take whatever was valuable. Obviously you see how well that worked.

She gestures to the amber-covered Reno being carried by Broll.

Li Li Stormstout says: I wasn’t going to leave him high and dry, so I went in after him. I ran into Ember after I lost track of Reno. Can you imagine running into another member of the Explorer’s League out here? I tried to infiltrate, but then I… stumbled into one of their breeding grounds. But thanks for pulling us out. Who are all of you again? And what were you doing there in the middle of this desert?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Following the explosions.

Ember smirks.

Li Li Stormstout says: You must all be Explorers if you’re traveling with Syeori, no?
Remnii says: Not quite.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Archeologists are the proper term! We aren’t just explorers bumbling into danger.
Li Li Stormstout says: Not bumbling-- well, Reno did. I tip-toed, and almost got out. Almost.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Explorers or archeologists aside. What are all of you doing on Kalimdor? How did you get here?
Syeori Sunwalker says: Well, if you’re really interested. I came overseas on an expedition along with a whole team. We already set up a base in Tanaris as well, near Gadgetzan, but we’re exploring. We’re chronicling what we see and taking stock of what happened. Obviously, there were some complications, but I got a lot of great field notes to bring back to the League!
Li Li Stormstout says: Honestly, I just joined the Explorer’s League a bit ago. Mostly when I ran into them. I’m just seeing the world like my uncle Chen does, and honestly I’m just keeping an eye out for him too.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You… just missed him. If your uncle’s name is Chen.
Li Li Stormstout says: Wait. Wait, you’ve seen him? Big guy, kind of rotund?
Velameestra Windrunner says: He mentioned you.

Tol’vas uses disguise self from the tattoo that Chen had created for him in order to look like Chen himself. Li Li hops up in excitement.

Li Li Stormstout says: By the ancestors… wait, wait, where did you see him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Gadgetzan.
Li Li Stormstout says: Oh shoot! I had been meaning to go visit there for so long! I had no idea he was down there.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: He missed you.
Li Li Stormstout says: Yeah, of course. Uncle Chen taught me everything I know! He has no idea that I’m out here. I was looking for him to surprise him! Ohhhh.

Li Li’s ears flatten against the side of her head and she paces.

Li Li Stormstout says: Do you know where he’s at now? There’s no way he’s still there.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He was heading eastward across the sea last he had mentioned.

Li Li’s ears droop for a second.

Li Li Stormstout says: Oh.

Suddenly, she stands straight up again.

Li Li Stormstout says: Well! I know where my next destination is! Eventually. When I get around to it. I just need to find a way to cross the sea… do they have ships down in this Gadgetzan place?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Uh. Not particularly.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There are ports.
Li Li Stormstout says: Good enough! There’s… goblins down there, right? I’ve heard all about goblins. They like money, right? I’ll need some money if I’m going to buy a ship. But, anyways, that’s why I’m here. I’m not an official member or anything. They just gave me this hat. They do seem pretty interesting though, maybe I’ll take a look at it.

Tae’shara chuffs.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: If you want to get yourself into more trouble than it’s worth, I guess.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I would caution going too far north, if you’re just exploring.
Syeori Sunwalker says: See, thing is, we need to find the rest of our team.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: They wouldn’t be stupid enough to go into hostile territory, I’m sure.

Li Li laughs and gestures to the amber-petrified human.

Li Li Stormstout says: I wouldn’t be so certain about that.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Should we, uh, fix that?

Remnii takes a look, and it appears Reno is petrified inside the amber stone. Vel casts identify on the amber, and it appears he is not under the effects of any spells presently.

Remnii says: I have greater restoration… does anyone have diamond dust beyond myself?

She looks specifically at the Explorer’s League.

Remnii says: I can break the petrification, but I only have so much to spare.
Syeori Sunwalker says: I don’t have any.
Li Li Stormstout says: Jackson may have some, but we can’t get it until we get him out. I’ll owe you one, and we can get out of your hair quicker. You do have really nice hair, by the way.

Remnii smiles.

Remnii says: Thank you. I have spoken a bit with some of the Explorer’s League folk in Dalaran. Good people, all in all, but I could in time use some kind of reimbursement. This is a limited supply of diamonds, all in all. But if you can make me that promise, I believe I can get started.

Syeori thinks for a moment.

Syeori Sunwalker says: I’m sure we can convince him. If you save his life, I’m sure he’d be willing to make it worth your while. I can make my own promise that I’ll owe you one.
Remnii says: I’m not holding anyone at hammer point here. Or hammer’s edge. I don’t know. But…

Remnii withdraws a pouch of diamond dust and casts a greater restoration on Reno. The amber starts to glow, and then starts to melt, freeing the human inside. All of a sudden he jerks awake.

Reno Jackson says: You can try your best! But there’s no--

Remnii puts a finger over his mouth.

Remnii says: You are safe now.
Reno Jackson says: You’re not a giant bug. None of you are.
Remnii says: Don’t move too quickly.

Reno rubs his eyes.

Reno Jackson says: Hey! Syeori! Li Li!

He tries to stand and then stumbles.

Remnii says: Listen to me, please. Take a seat.
Reno Jackson says: Right. Anyone mind getting me caught up?

He is appraised of the situation, and he looks to the group.

Reno Jackson says: Well, sounds like I owe all of you much and more thanks. You got my gratitude.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: You actually owe her about 1000 gold in diamond dust.
Remnii says: Only 100!
Reno Jackson says: Well, I’m fresh out of diamond dust, but… wait, do I still have that? Aha!

He pulls a pouch out and unwraps it.

Reno Jackson says: You want diamonds, but I can do you one better. First off, what are all you doing out here?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Traveling.
Remnii says: Going to meet my people.
Reno Jackson says: I ain’t ever seen someone like you before. So where is that, exactly?
Remnii says: North, into hostile territory.

Li Li chuckles.

Remnii says: We are new to your world.
Reno Jackson says: Well. Welcome!

He tips his hat.

Reno Jackson says: I’ve got a deal for you. We’re heading north too--
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Why…
Reno Jackson says: This is an unknown continent, boy! We want to get to know it!
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We lived here well before you existed.
Reno Jackson says: And I want to catch up! You’re very interesting! So we’re trying to learn more! After I escaped from the centaur and those pigmen
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Quillboar
Reno Jackson says: Yeah. We encountered these big folk with horns--
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Tauren.
Reno Jackson says: Yeah. Well turns out they got a settlement we’re trying to get to. We’re looking for people and some places--
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Like they live here or something.
Reno Jackson says: Yeah, I get that boy. So I was looking to make a trade! Maybe I could find old Bronzebeard, wherever he went off to.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So you’re also missing your leader?
Reno Jackson says: We are. Brann never came back after we set off. We’ve been trying to find them, but, well… there’s one more member we’re trying to find.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The murloc?
Reno Jackson says: Yeah! Finley got separated when he was trying to make his way around the bog. Yeah. I saw you guys before! You guys have a pretty big group, and I don’t want to bog you all down, but clearly this place is more dangerous than I thought. If you’d be willing, we could make a trade. You and yours saved my life, and I recognize that, but if you want some diamonds… feast your eyes on this bad boy!

He holds up a figurine carved of pure, smooth diamond. It looks like a unicorn or dreamrunner.

Reno Jackson says: Now, I was looking to trade this to the tauren and see if I could get their help, but I will do that with all of you instead. If you can get me as far as Thunder Bluff, this thing is all yours. It’s got plenty of diamonds in it if that’s what you’re looking for.

Remnii whistles upon seeing it.

Reno Jackson says: I have no idea about it, but if you’d be willing, this is all yours.
Uther Menethil says: Well, it doesn’t sit well with me to have you all wander off by yourselves again and wind up dead or worse. As long as there are no objections.
Remnii says: Can I take a look at it?

Reno looks at it and his lip quivers.

Reno Jackson says: Alright. Just be careful. You look like you know what you’re doing.

Remnii gently takes it and there is definitely something magical about it. She pulls out a few jewelers tools and examines it.

Remnii says: Vel. You have identify?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I do, if you want me to look.
Remnii says: This is likely some sort of religious idol, and you can almost taste it.

Vel reaches out to examine it.

Reno Jackson says: Oh! Careful!
Velameestra Windrunner says: I know how to handle magical artifacts, I assure you.
Reno Jackson says: Right! Right!
Remnii says: My people are known for crystal artifice.
Reno Jackson says: Really?!

Remnii indulges Reno and Li Li with an explanation as Vel examines the object. It’s a cousin of a figurine of wondrous power, and it appears to not be of this world. The diamonds have an otherworldly aura. It’s a figurine of magnificent mount--specifically the diamond unicorn. It can transform into a living and breathing unicorn for 24 hours that has no special loyalty to you, but if it accepts you, it will let you ride it. After 24 hours, it reverts to its form. The more evil you are, the less chance it has to accept you, and it may fight you.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Where exactly did you find this?
Reno Jackson says: Okay. I don’t know if you’ll believe me, but there is a tower located way to the… goodness. There’s a marsh somewhere to the east.

Reno seems to get into a position clearly ready to weave a dramatic tale of adventure.

Reno Jackson says: Me and Finley were taking a look at it after we escaped those centaurs. Thanks Syeori, glad you got out of there too. But after we tredged our way to the bog through hell and high water, we found this peninsula, and on it, the remnants of a town that seemed just as old as the others, but it wasn’t from the kaldorei people. It was, well, more like stuff in the Eastern Kingdoms, but it seemed displaced out of times. You wouldn’t believe it! There was an anomaly in the center that was rippling with supernatural energy! It gave me a weird feeling, and it felt like magic was all broken up. We didn’t go too deep, as there were some pretty dangerous magical traps. I’m pretty good at handling danger, but crazy magical defense systems… I stepped up. I found this. I don’t know if it was made there, or what, but no one was using it, so I thought I would make use of it myself.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well. You found a magical artifact. It can turn into a unicorn.
Reno Jackson says: Hm. Well. Do you want to try it? It doesn’t get destroyed does it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: No. It reverts after 24 hours. It’s not loyal. It needs to accept you.
Reno Jackson says: Hm. Well I think I can befriend a unicorn… but lets put a pin in that. Either way, offer stands. Help us, and its yours. I’m short on currency. Not many people deal in it here.
Remnii says: Ah. I was right in converting mine to gems then.

Tol’vas comments on the fact that the night elves never returned to currency, and Reno asks if they have a deal.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Personally, I have no qualms one way or the other.
Remnii says: We are going that way anyway. And I have a growing interest to speak with some of the Earthern Ring shamans. And Mulgore is in that direction, right?
Reno Jackson says: I think Thunder Bluff is in those plains. If you’re heading that way anyway, you can get this for free. But, man, I don’t know about you all, but I’m exhausted. After that I’m tired.
Remnii says: You should drink something.
Reno Jackson says: Right. Just realized I’m real thirsty.

Remnii offers him a water skin and reminds him to eat. Reno gets caught up with Uther and some of the others.

Ember offers to erect a tiny hut as well, and while the group starts to get settled, Vel approaches Tae’shara as they are working.

Velameestra Windrunner says: So question for you.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Oh yeah? What’s up Vel, how can I help you?
Velameestra Windrunner says: What… what’s with the barbs, exactly?

Tae’shara raises an eyebrow.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: You’re not talking about…

She gestures to some of the thorny brambles in the distance.

Velameestra Windrunner says: No… the commentary on the Explorer’s League.

Tae’shara furrows her brow.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Oh. You’re talking about that. Call it professional differences.

Vel stares at her for a moment.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I suppose I’m just… baffled. If you don’t want to deal with them, why go out of your way to engage with them?
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I mean, you heard them! They have such a high and mighty mindset of how they operate just because they’ve been around so long! They sound just like the dwarves do.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So… why not just show the proper way instead?
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: What, and show them company secrets? As if.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I mean just do it better, and let them be on their way. They won’t be traveling with us forever.

Tae’shara thinks for a moment.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Yeah, I guess you got a point. The sooner they get out of our hair, the better. Don’t want them mucking up this expedition even more, though I can’t say I like the idea of them heading up to Thunder Bluff. Especially seeing we don’t got anyone up there yet.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ultimately I have faith in the Reliquary’s ability to out-perform.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Aye.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Besides… um…

Vel’s eyes flicker over to Syeori a small distance away.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I don’t… think she knows about what happened in Quel’thalas yet.

Tae’shara crosses her arms.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: ...fuck.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I was… going to talk to her about it, and it may be wise not to… drive needles.

Tae’shara chews on her lip.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: You uh… does she have any family left?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yeah. Um… she grew up in Windrunner Village with us.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Ain’t surprised about that.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I touched base with her mother some time ago. They… seemed to have gotten out. I’m just… parsing how to open that conversation.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Don’t envy you, that’s for sure. Alright. Alright.

Tae’shara puts her hands up.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I’ll play nice. For now at least. Don’t think thinks me and her friends or nothin’ like that, but she’ll have enough on her plate with that, I don’t need to be makin’ it worse.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You don’t need to like her.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I’ll at least stay away from her right now.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Appreciated, Shara.

Tae’shara nods.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Don’t envy her. At least her folks ain’t dead.
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...yeah. At least there’s that.

Vel turns back to working on the domes, but Tae’shara chews on her lip for another second.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Um. And, uh, Vel, if there’s anything you ever need to talk about… lemme know, alright? ->Velameestra Windrunner says: I appreciate it.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I know I ain’t no Remnii or nothin’ as far as ears, but… uh. I’ll leave you to it.

The group erects the tiny huts in preparation for their long rest, and the group had separated off into their respective domes.

Watches are ultimately quiet, and Vel settles into watch with Uther on third watch--having not slept as had been the case for the last several days. She’s examining the vials of blood she had managed to collect from the small insects that had been hounding them.

Velameestra Windrunner says: So… that was a new trick. Thunder step.

Her eyes flicker over to Uther with a faint smirk. Uther chuckles.

Uther Menethil says: Saw that, did you?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I did.
Uther Menethil says: I… figured since breaking the habit of charging head first into danger when someone else’s life is in peril is unlikely, I should at least have a way to get out.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Hmph. Appreciated.
Uther Menethil says: Well, I had a good teacher.

Vel smirks again.

Uther Menethil says: How are you holding up?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well. Presently on day four, and I’m still coherent enough to function, so better than I was expecting.
Uther Menethil says: I suppose… difficult for me to tell given my lack of knowledge on the subject, but it doesn’t seem to be doing you too terribly.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m recovering. Still. But we’re on the way.

As they’re speaking, she had been using magic to steep coffee as she had every morning.

Velameestra Windrunner says: The sun is abysmal, however.
Uther Menethil says: Yes, not certain why you picked a desert to make this happen.

Uther chuckles.

Velameestra Windrunner says: There were… a lot of important people involved. It didn’t do to keep them waiting for the most opportune moment. It’s unlikely that exists.
Uther Menethil says: Suppose that’s true for all of us.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And ultimately the sooner I can make headway on things the better. But… I appreciate you.
Uther Menethil says: And I appreciate you as well, Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And whatever aura you have about yourself is… making this much easier.

As the coffee finishes she dumps a vial of thick, red blood into it and takes a sip. Uther chuckles again.

Uther Menethil says: I’m pleased to know that I’m helping.
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...you always do.

Vel uses analyze blood on one of the vials of blood she had collected, and it is an aberration--an otherworldly creature. It seems like the creatures do carry diseases. It didn’t seem like anyone had been bitten, but just to be on the safe side, it wouldn’t hurt to disperse some lay on hands.

As the magenta glow of the magic fades, she speaks again.

Velameestra Windrunner says: These creatures aren’t beasts. It may be wise, after everyone rises, if you and Elissa would… go through and purge any potential diseases.
Uther Menethil says: We’ll do that first thing before we leave.

Vel sighs, exasperated by the situation.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Appreciated. I’ll look into this further when I’ve had time to recoup more.
Uther Menethil says: So those… bugs we fought. They aren’t… native creatures?
Velameestra Windrunner says: No. They’re aberrant. Might be something Tol’vas and Broll might be interested in in particular.
Uther Menethil says: That’s very unsettling.
Velameestra Windrunner says: So was… whatever vaguely humanoid queen they had fighting among them.
Uther Menethil says: This land keeps getting stranger and stranger.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And incrementally larger. Whenever we meet someone new, it seems like they’re taller.

Uther starts to laugh.

Uther Menethil says: It’s odd being among the shorter members of a group. Hasn’t been this way since I was a boy.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I imagine it wouldn’t be.

Her analysis complete, Vel pulls out her spellbook to do some other minor things as they finish out their watch.

Tol’vas tries to dream Shandras, and he arrives in a lush, verdant plain hued in green. Shandris was laying in the low grass, and she starts up.

Shandris Feathermoon says: Ann’do?

She blinks, looks around, and sees Tol’vas.

Shandris Feathermoon says: Tol’vas? What are you doing, I told you, we shouldn’t be speaking like this.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We found a hive of silithids.

Shandris’s brow furrows.

Shandris Feathermoon says: Where?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: In the Barrens.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Do you know the place? This isn’t the best read on where you are.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: The Field of Giants. Near the Circle of Dust.
Shandris Feathermoon says: It seems every hive we find is further and further north. I’ll see what I can do. There are outriders in the area, but… Elune, stay out of sight, Tol’vas. If they find you, I don’t know what they will do. If you’re traveling with one of the eredar, they will ask questions, and I can’t save you.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I understand. We’re moving on.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Yeah, but you’re heading north, right? Stay out of sight, and be careful. Look. One of the groups there… I have a relative. Her name is Thora. If you run into them… I’ll send them in that direction, if you run into them, try dropping me name-- wait, don’t. That’s not a good idea.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That’s not the goal.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Stay out of sight. I shouldn’t know this. You’re getting closer to Ashenvale… if you want to take that deal, we can get you in, we can get you to a place to plead your case, but if you get caught early this will be out of my hands, so be careful, alright?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’ve recently been learning how to be more careful than I used to.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Well, I guess that’s a good thing. Though, I’m not an expert at math, but multiplying things by zero doesn’t help. Prove it, and maybe I’ll believe you. Lets not see you again at some sort of trial, alright?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That would not be as happy a reunion.
Shandris Feathermoon says: And not an execution either. If we can help it.

Tol’vas swallows hard.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Yeah.
Shandris Feathermoon says: I don’t have much longer. I’m going to need to wake up.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Does the name Broll Bearmantle mean anything to you?
Shandris Feathermoon says: Uh… yeah, why?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m running into all kinds of people. And, he was born after I went to sleep, so I didn’t know much about him.
Shandris Feathermoon says: I don’t know him personally, but I know of him. I know he…

Shandris grits her teeth.

Shandris Feathermoon says: He lived on the Silvergale Islands. The ones that the Violet Star impacted the most. He never spoke about what happened, but he left. You’ll have to ask one of the members of the circle to learn more.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Okay. I was just double-checking that he wasn’t dangerous.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Far from it. He’s a gentle soul from what I know, but I can’t imagine someone would return from that and be all still in one piece.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Alright. Thank you. Uh… hopefully next time we talk will be in person, and not a trial or execution.
Shandris Feathermoon says: Now you’re getting it.

Shandris smiles and turns away, and fades into pollen blown on the wind of the dream.

June 4th

The group awakens and prepares to move on, and while the three mages work on phantom steeds Vel speaks up.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I did an analysis last night. They are aberrations and they do carry disease. It may be wise to do a round of purging to be on the safe side.
Elissa Cross says: I’m on it! Lets go, Uther!

She and Uther go around with their lay on hands.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: In other news, I spoke with a contact, and there may be outriders heading toward that hive starting… maybe now? So we should be unseen.
Samaara says: We should stay off the road then. It will be more dangerous, but they are going to patrol the road, we want to stay out of sight.

Broll nods.

Broll Bearmantle says: I hope they are able to do something about them. It’s a shame we couldn’t slay their queen.
Reno Jackson says: Wait a second. You said the queen popped up in that?
Uther Menethil says: Indeed she did.
Reno Jackson says: What, uh… I don’t think she looked in condition to move last I saw her. She was real big. If she crawled out, I don’t know how she would get back in.
Uther Menethil says: Not a queen then? A lieutenant, perhaps?
Reno Jackson says: What did it look like? I saw lots of things before I turned into a nice office display.
Velameestra Windrunner says: She was ruby in color, long glistening wings, humanoid in shape.
Reno Jackson says: Yeah, those weren’t queens. Guards of some sort. Saw at least three of them. Felt them too. They get into your head, discourage you from fighting. Covered in these little spores. Don’t recommend fighting those things. Whatever queen they got down there is much bigger. Long body, fat, laying eggs. No good. But, some of my little surprises I left behind may hopefully give them work to do, and your patrol of outriders could maybe do something about that. We could hope. Hope they bring lots of fire, or whatever the heck those things are afraid of.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Which… speaking of outriders.

Vel looks to Broll.

Velameestra Windrunner says: It had been mentioned that there was a… distaste for the arcane amongst your people. Is that still accurate?

Broll nods.

Broll Bearmantle says: It is not my place to judge, but arcane magic has caused many problems with our people in the past. You have nothing to fear from me. I am an outcast, after all. You have proven to me that you are using your abilities responsibilities. Proving that to the rest of my people… that may be more difficult.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As we get further north, in that case, it may be wise to be aware of the resources we use. The domes and also the steeds are rather characteristically arcane in nature.

Broll nods again.

Broll Bearmantle says: I know little of your magics… but if these outriders were to see them, they would undoubtedly investigate. None of the native peoples of Kalimdor I can think of use magic of that type. They have not for a long time, and though it is believed there may still be some highborne that practice such things in the hidden places of the world--your people here being proof of this--it would not be welcomed. That I can safely assure.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Hmph. As we head further north, then, we may want to start going on foot. If we’re going to try and be discrete and not draw further attention to ourselves.
Broll Bearmantle says: It will likely take them some time. I don’t know the exact routes the Sentinels patrol… but with luck we may be able to reach Camp Taurajo before they make too much distance south. At this point, it may be wise to travel swiftly if possible. After which, perhaps we may reassess once we’ve rendevouz with your friend in Mulgore.
Remnii says: Oh! As long as you are going to be with us, apologies, I have been in contact with Jarod Shadowsong.

Broll blinks in surprise.

Broll Bearmantle says: With Jarod Shadowsong? The Jarod Shadowong?
Remnii says: He is in Mulgore and he has tasked us in finding him.
Broll Bearmantle says: Hmph. Many did not know he was still alive.
Remnii says: Seria scryed him, I dreamed him, and now we are on our way.
Broll Bearmantle says: I heard many tales of him. I suppose I am a bit speechless. I only hope I may aid you in your quest to speak with him.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m sure many of the stories were true.

Broll nods.

Broll Bearmantle says: If even half were, I would be impressed.
Remnii says: I only knew him by name, but he seemed very much… he was very humble and had a great deal of humility. He said “I don’t know how much I could help, I am just a man.”
Broll Bearmantle says: If the tales are true, that man stood alone against the Demon Lord Archimonde on the field of battle--

Remnii coughs and looks on in horror.

Remnii says: We should not even say the Defiler’s name.
Broll Bearmantle says: Yet he stood against him. Humility is well-earned, but an ordinary man I would not describe him as.
Remnii says: I see.

Remnii’s mouth feels dry, and she takes a drink of water.

Broll Bearmantle says: But we should be off, and we should keep the Gold Road out of our sight. The last thing we need is for the Sentinels to sight us.

He looks at Remnii in particular, who nods.

The group heads off the edge of the Gold Road. They travel for some time, and during a break in their travel, Remnii takes a quiet moment to speak with Broll.

Remnii says: Broll… may I speak with you for a moment?

There is a heavy look on Broll’s face as he nods.

Remnii says: First of all, I wanted to stay thank you for fighting by my side yesterday. You are a formidable opponent… I was happy to have you at my side, I would have been swarmed were it not for you.

Broll nods.

Broll Bearmantle says: I’m simply glad I was able to help. You… I owe you a great debt, Remnii, and I will repay it in what small ways I can. If fighting those monsters is one way, I do so gladly. You must give yourself credit, however. You operated with no small amount of bravery.
Remnii says: Thank you. I have seen far worse, but at the same time, I hate bugs.

She chuckles softly but then settles down into a seat next to him.

Remnii says: I will not pry into things, but I hope that… whatever we spoke of a few days ago. Even before the hive. If there is anything I could do for you, I cannot change what happened, mind you, but in looking towards a better future for ourselves and our people respectively, I… I hope… I am sorry for what happened. My words mean little in the scope of… everything. But… I still wish to say… thank you for listening to me, and coming to me with such earnest questions. If there is anything you wish to speak of in those regards, I am happy to share what I know.

Broll sighs.

Broll Bearmantle says: I… my family. Was on the Silvergale Isles. Where the Violet Star crashed. I had just entered the dream days before. I returned to… our small barrow den, but me and my kindred were awoken by the cataclysm. A piece of the star of your people’s… your people’s home… destroyed my home. My mate… she was gone before I arrived. But I do not blame you. I do not blame your people. For they weren’t alone. My daughter… she too is a druid. A novice, young, she was… but I was unable to protect her either. But it was not your people that took her, it was the demons. We found him. We went to try and save the others. The Lord of the Pit. A demon by the name of Azgalor.

Remnii was quiet, and a few silent tears were shed, but her expression fades into recognition.

Broll Bearmantle says: I… I fought him. I sought to banish him. Along with the others, those who had awoken with me and with Anessa. I told her to stay back, but she refused.

He reaches into his pack and withdraws a small idol that was about a foot tall. It looks to be made of a jade-colored wood, and there is a gash nearly bisecting the middle of it. Otherwise it looks sort of like a dragon.

Broll Bearmantle says: I was given this by a very powerful keeper of the grove. Entrusted with protecting it, and using it to protect this world and our people. And… I was not even able to do that. I lost this idol in the conflict, and Anessa took it up. She completed the ritual, but the demons struck, and as the ritual concluded, the resulting blast…

Broll looks at the idol and runs a large thumb over the gash.

Broll Bearmantle says: I was the only one who survived.
Remnii says: I’m so sorry for your loss. Again, my words mean little… how long ago did this tragedy strike?
Broll Bearmantle says: When the Violet Star crashed.
Remnii says: Fifteen years ago… I recently was pursued by Azgalor himself.

Broll’s face contorts in disgust.

Broll Bearmantle says: The demon has returned.
Remnii says: That is how I got here. I, and we, come with grim tidings from the east. I… In no case would I ever endeavor to tell you what you believe about yourself, Broll Bearmantle, but all your actions have been selfless and worthy and so steeped in care for those around you. This world needs people like you. Tragedy cannot always be undone, but the heart you carry, and your conviction… as someone touched by the Legion in much the same way, I implore you to not lose hope or faith. The years to come will be rife with trials, and more pain, but there is joy to be found too. Time and healing. With a heart as good as yours, your people will need you. And they… there is still protecting to be done.

Broll gives a small, sad, and resigned smile.

Broll Bearmantle says: Your words are kind, Remnii. I do not know. But your words are kind.
Remnii says: Well…

Remnii stands and offers a hand to Broll.

Remnii says: That is why, when faced with great adversary, it is one hoof, or one foot, or one paw, in front of another. You are not alone, and I will see to it that you are not.
Broll Bearmantle says: There is one thing I do know. I will do what I can to ensure you may accomplish your goal. As I said, I owe you my life. For what it is worth, I will at least see to it that… you may see your people once again. In what small ways I can perhaps, I can help to shed light on the failings that have led us to this situation.

Broll takes Remnii’s hand and stands, and she sets a hand on top of his.

Remnii says: Your words are just as kind, Broll.

She pats his hand, and Broll smiles softly as they part their ways and Broll puts the idol away.

Ember Flintlocke says: Come on, big guy! Got your noble steed ready!

As the group is resting why Remnii is talking to Broll, Uther reaches to go for his waterskin, and his hand touches something scaly. Uther immediately grabs it and tries to fling it, but the creature slips out of his grasp. As he turns around, he sees a small, lizard-like creature. Its body is covered in scales, and he sees a small raptor. It has a hearthstone in his claws, and then it zooms away and tries to run.

Uther tries to grab it, and it starts to try and run. Uther takes off after it.

Around the same time, Tol’vas and Seria noticed three other saurids creeping around and looking for other things they could peep into.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Hey, we got some saurids. Ah! I see you already found one.

The saurids start to take off.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Hey! Hey hey!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Uther, what are you doing??
Uther Menethil says: It’s got my hearthstone!

The group starts to try and outflank the saurids as they dash and dive, and they manage to surround them in a makeshift little nest. There are a number of gold pieces and some shiny bits and baubles, including Vel’s wand of arcane missile.

Uther Menethil says: Alright, you little scamps. You had your fun. But we’ll be needing our things back.

All the beady eyes turn to Uther, and for a moment they look on, and then one makes a loud screeching noise and they all start to bolt. One snaps up a nourishment bead it had stolen before running.

Uther Menethil says: Ever stranger this place becomes.

As Vel comes over to investigate, she sees her wand, looks down at her belt and sees it gone, and then curses as she retrieves it and puts it back in place.

They also see some additional gems and some very, very old coins as well as some that are goblin in origin. The group gathers up the spoils and then head off. However, Seria hears something and sees a bright red, teal-feathered saurid that poses at her. It’s obviously Riff. He curls up to ride with her for a bit.

During another break, Seria finds Vel easily enough. Upon noting her, Vel tilts her head slightly in acknowledgement.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Seria. Do you need another sending?
Seria says: … no. I need to talk to ya. Something happened in Zandalar.

A perplexed expression crosses Vel’s face, but she nods and closes the book that was open in her lap, shifting her full focus to Seria as she gets to her feet and they start to head a small distance away from the rest of their comrades in the pursuit of privacy. The elf’s attention shifts over the new tattoos that had appeared in Seria’s body--tattoos that she had assumed were simply new idle additions, but now she had other thoughts.

Seria looks around, doubly ensuring that no one else had followed, before she continues.

Velameestra Windrunner says: What can I do for you?
Seria says: So, I… may have had to make a deal with someone.

Vel inclines her head slightly.

Velameestra Windrunner says: What kind of deal?
Seria says: Do you know of the loa of death?

Vel goes through her mental catalog of information, and she doesn’t know much about the trolls’ religion, but she does recall Rai mentioning things about a myriad of loa while he had been traveling with them. He also definitely mentioned a loa of death by the name of Bwonsamdi--one that was very important to the Darkspear.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I know the name Bwonsamdi, but unfortunately I don’t know much beyond that.
Seria says: Well. He came to me in a dream. And… ya know how yer people, uh, killed Zalazane?

Vel’s eyes narrow slightly.

Velameestra Windrunner says: We did. Twice.
Seria says: Well… his soul isn’t on the Other Side.
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...what do you mean his soul isn’t on the other side?
Seria says: He’s not ‘dere.

As Vel is looking at Seria, there is a faint hint of magenta light seeping into the edges of her otherwise icy blue eyes.

Velameestra Windrunner says: And this deal involves that?

Seria nods.

Seria says: He wants me to find him and any other souls that happened be hangin’ around here. But his in particular.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Find him? So he’s on the mortal plane?
Seria says: He believes so, yes.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Did he have any idea where he might be?

Seria shakes her head.

Seria says: Just he’s not where he’s supposed to be.

Vel’s mouth twitches, like she’s going to start chewing on her lip, but she catches herself and instead her hand comes to rest on her chin.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. I’ll see what I can do. You just need to find him?

Seria nods again.

Velameestra Windrunner says: …alright.
Seria says: Another person that I need to find is a shadow hunter. They might be able to help. I know of one, Rokhan, but I haven’t been able to contact him yet.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Do you have any inclination of where he might be?
Seria says: I believe the Echo Isles.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That name doesn’t sound familiar… is it here?
Seria says: I’m not sure.

Vel sighs.

Velameestra Windrunner says: If you haven’t been able to contact this Rokhan then I imagine dream did not work. Did you try?
Seria says: I didn’t try yet.

Vel’s mouth flaps for a moment.

Velameestra Windrunner says: That may be your best bet. You can at least determine if he’s on this side of the disturbance or otherwise, and that will determine what we can do from there. But if Bwonsamdi wants Zalazane, and Zalazane somehow escaped… it would be my privilege to help ensure he burns in hell.
Seria says: Glad we’re on the same page.

Vel nods and takes a step back to recompose herself. The reddish glow in her eyes starts to fade away.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ll see what I can do in the meanwhile. His body was destroyed. If he’s still here… I may have a few theories.

She senses Kel’Thuzad’s presence in the back of her mind, as he had been keenly paying attention to the conversation.

Vel’s eyes flicker to the new tattoos on Seria’s body.

Velameestra Windrunner says: ...were those a personal choice, or are they something else?
Seria says: Part of the deal.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Hmph. Noted. If your loa contacts you with anything else… let me know.

Seria nods.

Velameestra Windrunner says: And thank you for coming to me, I suppose. I’m… invested.
Seria says: He… was the one that suggested it.

Vel’s eyes narrow slightly once more.

Velameestra Windrunner says: You don’t say.
Seria says: He said you’d have a vested interest in this and that… we shared something in common.

There is a pause as Vel surveys Seria for a moment.

Velameestra Windrunner says: … he killed my mother.

Seria’s eyebrows raise.

Velameestra Windrunner says: And if that fuck is still wandering… he will not be for long.

Her eyes flicker down to the tusks around Seria’s neck.

Seria says: ...so dat’s what he meant.

Seria’s hand subconsciously touches the tusks and starts to play with them.

Velameestra Windrunner says: So it would seem. I’ll review my notes and let you know if I think of anything.
Seria says: Alright.

Vel nods and moves to go back to what she was doing, but she looks incredibly perturbed.

Seria returns to Riff.

Riff says: Is everything alright?
Seria says: Everything is just fine.
Riff says: Okay. I’m always here for ya.
Seria says: I know.

The group continues on the next leg of the journey for the day, and they see something in the distance. It appears there is some strange energy on the wind, and the sun is starting to rise. Seria finds a very old piece of fabric, and as she touches it, it disintegrates, and as she looks further on, the area looks to be a very old battlefield. The signs of it are almost completely buried, but Seria had found it.

There are ancient signs of battle. Very, very old signs. Everything seems off, and there is a sense of uneasiness.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: You, uh… you all getting a weird feeling around this place?

Tol’vas nods.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I don’t like it at all.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: What do you think? Should we keep going, or should we take a closer look?

It’s a general uncomfortable feeling, and a sense that they shouldn’t linger in this particular place. It isn’t a sense that they are being watched, but it’s a sense of disquiet.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: It… may be worth investigating. Who knows what else we might find. We found a hive of intelligent monster not-bugs.

Vel leans down and takes some dirt between her fingers. She then looks at Uther.

Velameestra Windrunner says:: Uther… you can detect the presence of strange things, can’t you?
Uther Menethil says: Less strange and more malevolent, but I imagine that’s a semantic distinction with what you’re talking about.

Uther uses divine sense, and suddenly the area lights up. In the otherwise grown-over earth, he sees slashes through the ground. There are long divots and what appears to be faint traces of desecration in acute locations.

Uther Menethil says: That’s unsettling.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Did you find something?
Uther Menethil says: Isolated spots of desecration. Some of them beneath us.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Well that don’t sound good.

The sun is starting to rise on the horizon, but there doesn’t seem to be any creatures about that would draw Uther’s attention. The strongest pulse seems to be right in the center of the battlefield, but there is nothing visible to the naked eye.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: So what do ya think… is this place is all messed up with bad magic, think we want to take a closer look, or should we keep moving?
Uther Menethil says: It doesn’t sit right with me to leave it as it stands, but… we are on something of a clock.
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Sounds like, uh, maybe we should put a mark on the map and take a look at it later, eh?

Ember doubles back.

Ember Flintlocke says: What’s the hold up, then?
Uther Menethil says: There is wickedness in this place. We’re deciding whether to investigate and try to undo it, or continue on like we didn’t detect anything at all.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I could just dig it up.
Uther Menethil says: Can you now?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Well, not me personally, but I can get some help.

Ember sighs.

Ember Flintlocke says: I can get some work done on that. I’d be more than capable to mold earth where needed.

Tae’shara nods.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I can help with that too, so it’ll at least go a bit faster.
Uther Menethil says: Well, lets make haste. It wouldn’t do to be here longer than needed. Lets start excavating.

Seria does a quick scan with find traps before anyone starts, and she notes there is one thing in particular that was not intended to be dangerous but absolutely is. However, it was fortunately only one thing.

Tol’vas, meanwhile, summons eight giant badgers which come out of an opened portal in a single line. The first one gives Tol’vas a sagely nod, and then they move to start digging as commanded.

Wulf also goes over to Tae’shara and holds out a hand.

Wulf says: Give me that shovel. The sooner we get done with this, the sooner we can get on the road.

He then goes and starts to dig, alongside Broll and Uther who also get shovels. Remnii ensures everyone stays hydrated. As they work, Wulf glances over to Uther.

Wulf says: Heh. You know, I’m actually a bit surprised seeing you offer to take up that trowel and help.

Uther chuckles.

Uther Menethil says: Why’s that?

Wulf chuffs.

Wulf says: You don’t look like the type to be tilling fields.
Uther Menethil says: I’m not particularly skilled at it. But I’m of the opinion even kings aren’t above labor.

Wulf chuffs again.

Wulf says: Kings. Peasants. They all die the same in the end of it.
Uther Menethil says: At the very least, it would be unseemly of me to expect others to do work I wasn’t willing to do myself.
Wulf says: Well ain’t that a nice little notion. You’re some sort of prince, eh?
Uther Menethil says: You have the right of it.

Wulf leans on his shovel as he takes a swig of water.

Wulf says: Don’t think I’ve ever met no prince or king or anything like that.
Uther Menethil says: I’m honored to be the first!
Wulf says: Something tells me they don’t all have as good of a swing as you do. But you’re not a bad first impression. Keep it up and I might actually remember your name.
Uther Menethil says: I’ll endeavor to be the first prince worthy of the great Wulf remembering my name.
Wulf says: Heh.

Wulf wipes water out of his beard, which has only been growing more and more as the group travels.

However, as Uther is excavating, he suddenly hits something metal.

Uther Menethil says: I found something!

Tae’shara looks over.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I got something too!

She lifts up a helmet, which Tol’vas immediately recognizes as an old, weathered helmet that would have been worn by one of the kaldorei resistance. As Ember brushes more silt away from what Uther had found, they see a very sharp, jagged edge. As more dirt is moved aside, it is revealed to be a blade of some sort, but it was too large for anyone of their size to wield.

Tol’vas explains the helmet Tae’shara found was from the kaldorei resistance.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Bloody hell.

She is handling it even more carefully than she was.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Gentle…

She sets it down.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: Aramar! Mark this down on the map!
Aramar Thorne says: You’ve got it, ma’am!

Aramar shakes his head the moment he finished speaking, blinking and what he just said to Tae’shara, but he quickly marks down the location on the map he had been drawing as the group traveled.

As the group continues to remove more earth around the blade, the full scope of the weapon comes to light. The blade itself is easily the size of a ballista bolt, and it almost looks like one at first, but the metal that makes up its shaft is pure black, and all the damage to it seems to be old, but wear and tear does not seem to have affected the weapon as much as the other remnants.

Broll furrows his brow at it.

Broll Bearmantle says: I believe that to be… I believe this to be part of a glaive of one of the pit lords.

Almost as Broll says it, it comes to Vel’s mind. It seems the weapon is exactly one half of a glaive, and it is still resonating with malevolent energy.

Tol’vas frowns.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: We should get rid of it.

Tae’shara looks at the massive glaive, and then back to Tol’vas.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: That’s a brilliant idea. Do you know how we’ll go about doing that?

Remnii knows a hallow spell would likely be able to help, but that would take a long time to cast. However, it’s clear that the weapon is likely causing the most damage in the area, and if it were to be removed, the land would slowly heal. Tol’vas knows there is magic that could dispose of things like this, especially seeing it was already damaged. He also gets the sense that if it were struck with something equally as hard as it, it would probably be destroyed.

After some discussion, the group decides to try a joined effort to destroy the glaive. Remnii uses guidance on Tol’vas, and Seria uses guidance on herself, before Tol’vas uses remove curse and Seria uses dispel magic on the glaive. In that moment of weakness, Uther swings his hammer around, channeling the power of the Light through Light’s Vengeance. The coronet of justice appears over Uther’s head as the hammer strikes into the side of the glaive. For a brief second, it just resonates, and it a hurts a lot, but he pushes through the pain as the light flashes through the glaive. But then then, tiny spider cracks of light appear through the glaive, and then it shatters into three large pieces and a menagerie of shards.

What’s left of the glaive goes clattering across the battlefield, and they feel the unsettling presence of the area start to fade.

Uther smiles.

Uther Menethil says: We’ve done a good thing today, friends.

He moves over to inspect the fragments, and Vel starts to move over to help, but Uther was already on top of it. The fragments are warm, but not painfully so, and it seems that stripping it of both the magic and latent fel energy at the time of its destruction had caused that corruption to disperse, leaving only twisted, black metal. The remnants were not innately magical on their own, but they could be used to create chaotic weapons in turn, or otherwise repurposed.

Uther opts to keep the fragments after Vel runs a cautionary identify on the shards and determines the same.

It would be hard to repurpose, as whoever would do it would have to rework some very strong metal, but it was ultimately possible.

Tol’vas opts to use plant growth over the area to speed up its recovery as well. The grass begins to grow very rapidly, and the bushes and shrubbery bristle outward and start to reclaim some of the battlefield.

The group then continues on to cover the last two hours of their travel.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: 7000 years… and they still left scars.
Uther Menethil says: We’ll stop them.

Remnii looks to the sky, somewhat pensive.

The sun continues to rise in the distance, inching well above the horizon as the group comes to the conclusion of the remaining leg of their journey. They are off the beaten path, and are about two days out from Camp Taurajo.

As the group is settling in to set up camp, Tol’vas approaches Broll.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Broll, do you have time to talk?

Broll nods.

Broll Bearmantle says: Of course, Tol’vas.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I have a question for you, and I’m fairly certain it’s personal, but… I haven’t seen you do any magic, or take any shape other than that of a bear.

Broll sighs, and his broad shoulders sink slightly.

Broll Bearmantle says: You are correct. I am ashamed to admit that… I am unable to take the form of other beasts. Not anymore.

Tol’vas’s eyebrows knit together.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That’s… nothing I’ve ever heard of happening before.
Broll Bearmantle says: I am not surprised. You came from a time of heroes and champions. It does not surprise me that the failings of people in the time that you remember were… different. They were loud and legendary, mine… mine are but a whimper. When I failed my people, when I left, when I exiled myself to the south, I… the spirits that give us our shapes, that visit us in the Dream, that allow us to take their form so that we may better protect the world. They left. Undoubtedly ashamed of my incompetence. Of the lives I allowed to slip through my hands, and the destruction I allowed to unfold as my claws could do nothing. It is only that of the bear, only that of Ursol, that stayed with me. For reasons beyond my ken, I still reach him. But do not be upset, this is my own failing. There’s no reason to hold animosity toward any of them. Many of them laid their lives down to protect us. This is something I will not soon forget, nor will any of us. That is my shame. I know not why, perhaps it was because I was a member of the Circle of the Claw, and Ursol took pity on me, or perhaps I am simply beneath his notice.

Tol’vas is aware of the wild god brothers, Ursoc and Ursol, and it would make sense that Ursol--who lost his brother during the War of the Ancients--would not abandon someone who had lost friends and possibly family as well. However, as for other wild gods, it varies, but Broll seemed to be a legitimately good person, so there was likely something more to it, especially given how gifted Broll seems to be.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That… doesn’t sound like the Ursol I knew of.

Broll offers a sad smile.

Broll Bearmantle says: I should not be surprised that you, who fought alongside the ancients, would be more familiar.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m sure you know he lost his brother. Someone he cared about.

Tol’vas gives Broll a sad smile in turn.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I don’t think he would abandon someone who may feel a similar pain.

Broll closes his eyes to think before speaking again. He smiles.

Broll Bearmantle says: You may be right. But… I cannot say. Perhaps in time he too will abandon me. I cannot say I would not deserve it. But for the time being, he has lent me his strength, and I will not allow it to go to waste. You and your friends have shown me great kindness, though I do not know if I deserve it, I will not allow it to be received ungratefully. But I have much to learn from your view of this world. Thank you.

Tol’vas stands up.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Thanks for taking the time to talk to me.
Broll Bearmantle says: It is a shame. I believe that my daughter would have liked you.

He puts a hand on Tol’vas’s shoulder and gives it a firm, but gentle squeeze. He then turns to start to head back.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Um, perhaps one other thing, at least from my perspective, Broll.

Broll stops to listen.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: The ancients don’t tend to abandon people… but they could be pushed away if you don’t think you’re worthy enough.

Broll hears his words, and looks up at the sun to take a deep breath, but says nothing further as he heads back towards the group. However, he seems thankful.

A bit later, Remnii approaches Uther.

Remnii says: Uther, do you have a moment? I was wondering if you would maybe want to partake in something with me… would you like to spar?
Uther Menethil says: Of course.
Remnii says: I’m not going to be good at it!

Remnii is holding her staff loosely.

Remnii says: But at the same time, I would like to try!
Uther Menethil says: As some of my mentors have often told me, it’s not about perfection, it’s about progress.

Remnii chuckles.

Uther Menethil says: But yes, lets begin!

They move to a more open area, and Remnii is fondly reminded of the sparring matches between herself and Arthak. She seems to be in a good mood.

Everyone in camp is looking on in interest. Samaara rolls her eyes and sits down in mild amusement.

Remnii says: I can nurse my own wounds.
Samaara says: Just don’t trip over your own hooves.
Remnii says: I can promise nothing.

There is some laughter, and Remnii puts her hair back in a big ponytail before leveling her staff. Tae’shara, meanwhile, is starting up some bets at 10 to 1 or 20 to 1 that Uther will win this.

Elissa Cross says: I put 5 gold on Remnii!
Remnii says: I cannot pay you back.

There are some other bets, but nothing hugely significant.

It’s decided that the sparring match will be first hit, and they opt to not use magic.

Remnii says: Alright, lets go!

Uther starts to run at Remnii and brings his weapon up, and Remnii winces and brings her quarterstaff up in preparation. She manages to get Uther right beneath his guard as he was coming for her, and baps him perfectly on the side of the neck (due to a natural 20!). Her staff surges with Light in response to the connection.

There is a moment of complete silence before Elissa shouts out.

Elissa Cross says: You did it Remnii!

Uther laughs heartily.

Uther Menethil says: Well done! I am defeated!

Tae’shara’s mouth drops and she drops the handful of coins in her hand.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I… guess I owe you some gold pieces, Elissa.
Elissa Cross says: Oh, nononono! I thought we were just joking! It’s fine, it’s okay!
Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I mean, I’m not gonna push it if you’re not gonna.
Remnii says: Lucky hit on my part!

Remnii pats Uther on the shoulder and casts cure wounds on him.

Remnii says: We can go again or leave it here. That was a lucky hit!

Everyone laughs and starts to go back to their own business. Samaara smirks and shakes her head as she walks away.

Remnii says: Thank you for humoring me, Uther.
Uther Menethil says: Please don’t think I was going easy on you!

Uther rubs his neck and Remnii looks down.

Remnii says: Oh no! I have a chance to get lucky once. It’s a running trend, actually! We can try one more tune or we can call it here. No more bets though, huh?

She looks back to Tae’shara with a smile, who hastily shakes her head and pats her coin purse.

Remnii says: There are many kinds of strength.
Uther Menethil says: Indeed there are. And I think we’ll leave it here for the evening. I don’t imagine it getting much more spectacular than that.

Remnii laughs.

Remnii says: I don’t think I would be so lucky. But would you take a walk with me? Just around camp?
Uther Menethil says: Of course!

Remnii’s countenance slows down as they start to walk around camp.

Remnii says: Sometimes I am uncertain… of how to reach out in the way of warriors and those who are physically powerful, all in all. Despite lucky hits, that was at least a one in twenty chance of me being able to hit. But I… there has been a lot happening through everything we’ve been going through. I know I don’t have years of history with you, or anything of that sort, but I do know what it is like to be far from home with no uncertainty that your people are in no small amount of danger. And having to put on a happy face about it.
Uther Menethil says: Am I so transparent?
Remnii says: No. I have stood where you are standing for almost as long as you have been alive. I… I do not wish to intrude on you, and you have people you wish to speak to, and sometimes it is better to leave the veneer on for everyone’s sanity. But not as the prince, but as Uther, I was hoping that perhaps someday I could reach out and we could… be better friends. We are cut from similar cloth, as it were.

Uther chuckles.

Uther Menethil says: I’m almost offended you think we’re not friends, Remnii. That’s a joke, by the way.

Remnii’s face runs a gambit of emotions, but ends in a sheepish laugh.

Uther Menethil says: I mean… even if I didn’t quite literally owe you my life in the time we’ve traveled together, Remnii, you have proven yourself to be… an incredible friend. I consider myself very fortunate to count you among my friends.
Remnii says: Thank you, Uther. I appreciate it. But also… I want you to know that you do not always have to be strong for everyone here. There is just as much strength in leaning on others to a degree as much as we lean on you.
Uther Menethil says: Having stood where I am standing, I imagine the way I handle it isn’t all that different from the way you did. There are good days, and there are bad days. But… as much as I keep the smile on regardless of how I’m feeling, it’s for myself as well.

Remnii nods with an understanding smile.

Uther Menethil says: Have you noticed that even when you’re absolutely heartbroken. Miserable. If you can force yourself to laugh for just a little bit, more often than not you’ll start laughing for real.
Remnii says: You are correct. And personally I like to cry it out until I laugh, but that’s just me. But… still. And this is simply a check in beyond the prince, though I wager the word prince means little to most folk around here.
Uther Menethil says: It’s strange. For the first time in my life, the circumstances of my birth mean absolutely nothing.
Remnii says: How does it feel?
Uther Menethil says: It’s refreshing, actually.
Remnii says: I’m happy to hear it.
Uther Menethil says: We even spent some time in a place where I wasn’t even allowed to speak until spoken to! ...I know the stakes are high. But I don’t think it’s wrong to enjoy where we are. I’m getting to see things that… everybody I grew up with would hardly believe.
Remnii says: You’re a legend in the making, Uther.

She smiles earnestly.

Remnii says: And, to walk in a land of giants.
Uther Menethil says: I better be a legend in the making. After all, we’re going to be the ones to stop the Burning Legion.

Remnii’s smile dims with a great deal of purpose.

Remnii says: We are. That is my life’s work. And I will not be able to do it without you or anyone else here. Maybe minus the silly hats.

Her mind drifts to some of the Explorer’s League folk.

Remnii says: Or maybe more silly hats, it’s uncertain. But thank you for speaking with me, in truth. I… I spent a lot of time on Draenor and beyond not really being able to speak my mind, and always being… there was a lot there. I find myself now with all this freedom, and I’m uncertain what to do with it, and it’s become harder with time--whether I realized it or not--to be able to speak my mind and reach out as I wish versus… well, always finding things accountable. If that makes any sense.
Uther Menethil says: I believe so. Perhaps a different page of the same book where for the first time being a prince doesn’t matter. But I’m always available, Remnii.
Remnii says: As am I. I know that you know you’re not alone, but I simply wish to remind you. Especially this far from home.
Uther Menethil says: It’s appreciated! But even this far from home… I have you, I have Vel, I have Elissa. Though she doesn’t say much, Seria’s presence comforts me. All of the friends we made along the way.
Remnii says: The nature of a found family is not one to be denied. That said, I wonder if I project some of my own homesickness upon you. I believe fifteen years is enough for me to be away from home. But, home is where my loved ones are, and they are here as much as they are far north and on Draenor… and even some beyond that. Thus, I don’t think I have anything else to say other than talking in circles and probably needing to go to bed!
Uther Menethil says: It does grow late. Or early, I suppose.
Remnii says: Yes in every context.
Uther Menethil says: Hm. When next we can, Remnii, would you have any interest in learning how to play Hearthstone?
Remnii says: I halfway learned how to play! On Draenor! I was actually able to sell some of my first edition Hearthstone cards. Vel bought at least a quarter of that deck. I have a few left, but they are very old. I would love to keep learning!
Uther Menethil says: Fantastic. Consider it done.
Remnii says: Perhaps I’ll have to tell you sometime how a demon taught me how to play first. But, in that case, lets head back. Though, last candid thought. If I never have to camp ever again after all this is over, I will be absolutely thrilled. I will never complain, but also…

Uther chuckles.

Uther Menethil says: Understandable.
Remnii says: The romance of the whole thing wears off after a time. For me at least.

The duo heads back to camp.

Remnii says: May I give you a hug?
Uther Menethil says: Of course!

Uther embraces Remnii and also picks her off the ground for a moment. Remnii squeals in surprise.

Remnii says: Everyone is so strong!

Hilariously, at the sound, Samaara immediately stopped what she was doing and stood up to look in the direction Remnii’s squeal had come from. After she made note that Remnii was alright, she once more returned to what she was doing.

However, as Uther and Remnii start to head to the site of the domes, Tol’vas approaches.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Remnii, can I speak with you briefly?
Remnii says: Absolutely, what can I help you with?

They also stroll to offer themselves a bit of privacy.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I was hoping for your assistance, actually.

Tol’vas pauses for a moment.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: In the arena… I wasn’t trying to take that shape.
Remnii says: Oh! I am not too familiar with druidic magics…

She gestures for Tol’vas to continue.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: So, the enormous wolf I became. For a brief period. That. That is why… we got cursed. Uh… shan’do called it the pack form. It was what we were trying to master, which led into creating the scythe, which was what got us the worgen curse. Uh, the problem with it, is that anyone that would take the pack form would be overwhelmed by bloodlust and could not change back, and they would proceed to viciously try to kill anything around them.
Remnii says: That explains some of your behavior. While in that form.

Tol’vas nods.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I never had clarity of any kind in that form before.
Remnii says: I’m assuming you had some during the arena fight?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I was actually in complete control for once.
Remnii says: Was it before or after the calm emotions?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Oh, I’m specifically speaking of when I was the enormous wolf… after I was knocked out, that was me wildly out of control.
Remnii says: I am not familiar with your worgen curse either on top of the pack form, so my apologies for getting them confused.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Understandable. But, I… that leads me to the help I need from you. I want to keep it under control. If it’s going to lash out at random, then that’s never going to work. So, uh, I would like your assistance in trying to more safely be able to practice said form.
Remnii says: I’m assuming with calm emotions?

Tol’vas nods again.

Remnii says: That seemed to be the most reasonable of the spells I have at my disposal. I am not sure what the magic itself would consider your pack form, but… we could try. But if push came to shove… if you are not recognizable as a human to the magic, it may fail. But the only way to know is to try.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Okay.
Remnii says: Your worgen form, not your pack form, was able to resonate with that aspect of yourself.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Yeah, the biggest hurdle has been the overwhelming rage it instills in you.
Remnii says: I… could prepare a small battery of spells that may work. Charming and suggestion… others that may help. Magics that I am more hesitant to use, but perhaps if I can talk you down another way… if your people have wrestled with this pack form, I wager some simple things have been tried before. If we could bolster your mind while you are in that form, and also have some contingency plans… there could be… perhaps there could be some sort of solution.

Remnii cocks her head in thought.

Remnii says: I can prep them tomorrow morning, but I would first need to do that and sleep on it first.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Of course, I don’t want to rush into anything.
Remnii says: Just let me know when you wish to try… after all being in the middle of nowhere is likely better than being in close proximity to civilization. Such as this camp.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Also a very good point. I think there’s merit in… mastering something that otherwise would make me a monster.
Remnii says: Monsters are not often as they appear, thus I believe you are correct.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Thank you very much for hearing me out then, Remnii.
Remnii says: Of course.

Remnii offers him a smile.

Remnii says: In that case, as I had said earlier, I believe we should likely go to bed. But we will touch base tomorrow, and see what can perhaps be done.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I do very much appreciate it.
Remnii says: Again, I am happy to help.

Remnii gives him another earnest smile before they head back to camp.
