Dalaran
The magocratic city-state of Dalaran (or Dalaran City) is located in the Eastern Kingdoms near the Lake of Lordamere on the Alterac Mountains shore. It is ruled by the assembly of mages known as the Kirin Tor, who are centered around the inner fortress called the Violet Citadel.
History
Dalaran was one of the seven kingdoms that emerged with the decline of the Arathi empire. Before its founding, most human magi lived in Strom, but they sought a place more suited to the extensive use and study of magic. With the help of the high elves, they founded Dalaran on a massive ley line to the north of the Alterac Mountains. Over time, more scholars of the arcane flocked to the city, and it became both a haven for magi and a central hub for arcane study. The magi of Dalaran took the roles of protectors, and shielded those who were non-magical with powerful wards and other protection spells on the extravagant nation.
However, the magi overused the arcane arts and were not protected by the dampening wards that races such as the high elves had constructed, thus they acted as a beacon for the Burning Legion. Demons ultimately slipped through gaps in reality, and they terrorized the locals until the ruling magi turned to the high elves for aid. Their magisters quickly realized what happened, and they advised that humanity would have to give up magic in order to subdue the threat completely—a sacrifice that many were unwilling to make. Instead, they proposed the selection of a mortal champion to fight against the Legion.
This Guardian would ultimately have access to the might of the most powerful magi of Dalaran, and would be a secret defense for the world. The elves agreed and, through founding the Order of Tirisfal, provided some guidance for the selection. At the same time, the magi of Dalaran began to organize themselves into a sect whose responsibility would be to catalog and research all human magic, who would become known as the Kirin Tor.
The Kirin Tor rose to become the city's ruling power, and the people there were happy and well protected. The Violet Citadel ultimately became the seat of power for the Kirin Tor, and it also housed many libraries, research chambers, testing rooms, classrooms, meeting alcoves, and bedrooms.
