August 2nd
Zar’kaa locks eyes with Seria, who he hadn’t seen in a few years, and he blinks in disbelief. He chuckles.
Zar'Kaa says: We searched for you for so long. There were times I thought you may have been dead.
He approaches and pulls Seria in for a hug, and Seria freezes.
Zar'Kaa says: Glad to see that you aren’t, Seria.
Zar’kaa smiles and releases the hug.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You know each other then?
Zar'Kaa says: Yeah. On the Darkspear Isles we grew up togetha’. We was good friends for a while. I see ya keep interestin’ company these days. As I said. I be Zar’Kaa. What be yer names?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Velameestra.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Tol’vas.
Remnii says: Remnii.
Maraad says: I am Maraad, a Vindicator of the draenei.
Uther Menethil says: I’m Uther. A friend of Seria’s is a friend of ours.
Elissa Cross says: I’m Elissa! Nice to meet you!
Riff says: And I be Riff! I didn’t know you had other friends, mada?
Zar’Kaa chuckles, but then does a double-take between Riff and Seria.
Zar'Kaa says: Huh… well I suppose there be a story there, little one? But that’s for another time.
Riff says: We call ourselves the Death Adders!
Zar'Kaa says: Oh do ya now? That must mean you’re the most deadly of all, eh mon?
Riff puts his hands on his hips and nods proudly.
Riff says: That’s right!
Zar'Kaa says: I’ll be on your good side then! No need for Zar’Kaa to get into fights he can’t win! But where be Rai? He left with you, ya? He still alive?
Seria says: He be in Zandalar.
Zar'Kaa says: Oh. Good to know. I be happy to see him again once we travel there. How he be doin’?
Seria says: Still be as twitchy as ever.
Zar’Kaa smirks.
Zar'Kaa says: I suppose some things never change. But! I don’t want to be holdin’ you up no longer. So. You all come to claim Zalazane’s soul, ya? As the rest of the Darkspear do. This be true?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Correct.
Zar'Kaa says: We got a common enemy then.
Rokhan nods.
Rokhan says: There be a couple things we need to gather before the ritual be ready. I’ll be gettin’ things prepared for when you come back.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. Suppose we know our destination. And we know what we be seeking. Dealing with Zufli’jin gonna be another matter entirely.
Rokhan’s eyes move in acknowledge.
Zar'Kaa says: Even if some of us be in better standin’ with the chieftain. I imagine she loathe to give up her father’s glaive. Can’t blame her for that. Suppose we’ll worry about that problem later.
Velameestra Windrunner says: First thing’s first, who else is going?
Zar'Kaa says: I be followin’ your lead.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’d actually like to go.
Remnii says: Either way is fine with me. I don’t wish to impose…
Zar'Kaa says: It don’t be a matter of stealth. We’ll be goin’ through the city.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ll be putting disguises up regardless. Elves in the middle of Zandalar would not be welcome.
Zar'Kaa says: Aye. Good thinkin’. Seria, you may want to disguise yourself as well. Dunno if Zulfli’jin be eager to see ya.
Remnii says: If we all to stay together, that may benefit all of us… I would like to help wherever I can.
Maraad says: Would you have me go with the rest of you, or would I be more useful preparing for this ritual?
Zar'Kaa says: As far as I know, I don’t know if there’s anything ya can do Maraad. Ya just may want to leave the talkin’ to anyone who knows the tongue of the Darkspear and the Zandali.
Maraad says: I don’t speak the tongue of your people… I’m only just mastering your common.
Elissa Cross says: I can stay here and watch Riff. It may not be the best idea for him to go…
Zar’kaa cocks his eyebrow.
Elissa Cross says: Oh! It’s nothing!
The way Elissa brushes it off, it seems like it’s also possible Riff is not in good standing with the Darkspear.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. I’ll get those disguises in place then.
Riff seems to get bummed out.
Riff says: I wanna go too, mada!
Seria gives him a gentle, but stern look. Riff pouts.
Riff says: I never get to do the fun things…
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: You had the arena fight.
Riff says: That was pretty fun…
Velameestra Windrunner says: You also fought a thunder god.
Riff gets a bit flustered.
Riff says: Fine!
Zar'Kaa says: Don’t worry. I’ll take you to Zandalar sometime.
Riff says: Really? Can I mada?
Seria says: Maybe.
Maraad says: I don’t know how I can help, but if you need things moved, I can do that. I’d like to learn more about your people.
Rokhan says: I think there be a couple things. I appreciate the extra hands.
Maraad looks at Remnii.
Maraad says: Will you be alright?
Remnii says: We will not be gone long.
Maraad says: This is a diplomatic mission… this is your specialty.
Remnii says: I hope so. Otherwise, lift with your knees.
Maraad says: I’ll see you all when you return.
Vel casts [Seeming] over the group. Vel transforms herself into a white-haired ice troll. Seria transforms herself into her full jungle troll disguise. Tol’vas stays in his wolf form. Remnii also looks like a wavey-haired ice troll. Uther looks like a forest troll with red hair.
Zar’Kaa blinks a few times at Seria as she looks a lot like her mother, but then he smiles.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Seria, I wager you would like to warn Rai before we show up, correct?
Seria nods.
Zar'Kaa says: Is Rai expecting us?
Velameestra Windrunner says: That’s what the sending is for.
Remnii offers a few castings of [Tongues] to those that don’t know Zandali while Vel puts a [Sending] in Seria’s ring of spell-storing.
Seria says [sending]: Rai, I’m bringing Vel and a few others. Be ready.
Rai says [sending]: Uh, What!? Oh no. Okay! I be ready. Meet ya where we last saw ya! See ya soon, I guess!
Seria looks to the party.
Seria says: We’re good.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Are we walking through a tree then?
Seria nods.
Zar'Kaa says: Um. A tree?
Seria gives Zar’Kaa a look.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s a spell. We walk through one tree and step out of a tree on Zandalar.
Rokhan puts his hand on Zar’Kaa’s shoulder.
Rokhan says: She be pickin’ up a few tricks since ya last saw her. Be safe. Don’t be takin’ any risks, ya? Last thing we need is the council seeing a bunch of elves and humans in Zandalar…
Zar'Kaa says: Don’t ya worry, boss man.
Rokhan says: Still. Gonna need all your help to make this happen. Good huntin’.
Zar'Kaa says: We won’t be long.
Seria opens up a portal in one of the larger palm trees as she casts [Transport via Plants]. They all step through, and they are hit by the late summer heat wave of Zandalar. The portal starts to close behind them, and they hear someone calling Seria’s name–they see Zuni running after them, but he is left behind as he arrived too late.
Zar'Kaa says: That boy be sometimes too eager for his own good.
They hear the trickling of water, and they see the tall and imposing trees of the jungle outside the city. Uther is visible awestruck of the city in the distance.
Remnii starts to put her hair up.
Zar'Kaa says: First time?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Can’t say many of us have been to the heart of the troll empire.
Remnii says [tongues]: There are many things on this world…
Zar'Kaa says: It be a big world. Most of us ain’t seen all of it either.
Remnii chuckles softly.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I imagine we’re just going to wait here for Rai?
Zar'Kaa says: Follow me. I be showin’ ya the way.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: What about her friend?
Seria says: We’ll run into him.
Zar'Kaa says: Good.
They start to head through the woods. They are about a half hour out, and they quickly start to see stones with painted metals and gemstones embedded in the sides. There are boats on the river–many of them filled with fisherman that are Zandalari trolls. The shortest among them are about 9 feet tall. There are long poles with long strings being cast down from a bridge and pulling up fish from dozens of feet down. There are caravans crossing the busy roads, and the dirt path starts to fade into stonework that leads into the first of many sets of stairs.
There are a few times Remnii stops to catch her breath, but then she keeps moving.
They pass by a massive Zandalari worker that is carrying a basket that looks more like a giant basket.
As they get to the top of the stairs, they can see the many different pyramids, and the largest among them: the Great Seal, the heart and the seat of the Zandalari empire in the center of the massive trees.
Remnii says [tongues]: Truly is magnificent.
Zar'Kaa says: If the Zandalari be good for one thing, it be the spectacle.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: Do you not like them?
Zar'Kaa says: Lets just say, they ain’t part of my tribe, and leave it at that. Besides, this isn’t the place to be discussing that, yeah?
Zar’Kaa points out a few notable locations for the reference of the group. There are a few guards that are keeping traffic moving and directing people to prevent jams in the roads. They can see two humanoid creatures that are very wide and covered in scales. The appear to have a backpack, but as they turn around they see they actually have shells like turtles. The two of them are bickering about how much the Zandalari rush around.
Vel starts to keep an eye out for Rai, and she notes there is a disturbance down below. Rai spills out from the crowd, quite winded and sweaty. He grabs his waterskin and sits down on one of the benches to catch his breath.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ah. There’s Rai.
Zar’Kaa strides over.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. This be a sorry sight, ain’t it?
Rai looks up.
Rai says: Sorry! If you need the seat– wait a second. Zar’Kaa?
Zar'Kaa says: Ya know it, mon!
Rai says: I haven’t seen you in years! Hey!
He looks beyond and sees Seria. He waves.
Rai says: Hey! It’s good to see ya guys! I didn’t know ya was comin’.
Zar'Kaa says: To be fair, I thought you was dead.
Rai says: There was quite a few times I thought I be dead too. It’s good to see ya!
Zar'Kaa says: it’s good to see ya too! Glad to see our search wasn’t in vain
Rai squints at the other trolls.
Rai says: Is… is that Vel?
He points at Remnii.
Rai says: Is that you, Vel?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m over here, Rai.
Rai says: Oh! Sorry!
Remnii says [tongues]: I’ve heard of you, but I don’t think we’ve met. I’m Remnii.
Rai says: It’s nice to meet ya! The name’s Rai! And it’s good to see ya! It’s been forever!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Over a year or so.
Rai looks over at the last troll and the wolf.
Rai says: Is this another friend of yours? Wait…
His voice gets quiet.
Rai says: No… Is that… you, Uther?
Uther grins.
Rai says: Good to see ya again!
Uther Menethil says [tongues]: Good to see you too, Rai!
Rai looks down at the wolf, assuming he’s an animal companion.
Rai says: What brings all ya all here? It’s dangerous for most of ya!
Zar'Kaa says: Better with the disguises.
Rai says: Good thinkin’ on that, by the way!
Zar'Kaa says: It wasn’t me. It was Velameestra. But, happy as we are to see ya–me especially–we come for another purpose. We be needin’ to speak with Zufli’jin.
Rai says: I reckon this be about the business with Zalazane, ya?
Zar'Kaa says: Ya.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Wait… you knew about that?
Rai nods.
Rai says: Ya. I talked to Seria about it. She got a vision. Did she tell ya about that?
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Yes, she didn’t tell me you were also looking into it. I would have touched base sooner.
Rai says: Oh. Sorry. I didn’t know. I’ve been tryin’ to look into things about what this may mean, and why I’ve been seein’ my father around as well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …there’s another one?
Vel immediately looks at Seria, as does Zar’Kaa.
Zar'Kaa says: ‘Dis be news to me as well.
Seria takes a moment.
Seria says: Bwonsamdi said there be other spirits that escaped… or are missin’.
Zar'Kaa says: Missin’? As in they ain’t on de Other Side?
Velameestra Windrunner says: So how many are we looking for? I was under the impression there was just one?
Seria says: He didn’t say. He was mostly concerned about Zalazane.
Zar'Kaa says: But he did say Vol’jin got out as well? And we just be hearin’ about that now? I ain’t heard this from Rokhan or Vanira.
Rai says: I just know I swear I be seein’ him before… then Seria had her vision… learned he might be at large too. I’ve seen him a few more times over the last few months.
Zar'Kaa says: Really?
Rai says: I try to find him, but it never seems to work. Raava looked into it and asked a few of her friends… they seem to think he’s trying to tell me somethin’. I can’t tell what it is. I tried talkin’ to my sista’ but she’s convinced it ain’t be him. There be enough people around Zandalar that it could just be someone that looks like him… but I swear it be him.
Zar’Kaa shakes his head.
Zar'Kaa says: I think ya know if it be your fatha. I think ya should trust your instincts.
Rai says: She be wonderin’ why she not be seein’ him too. I don’t got that answer. But he always tends to lead me somewhere. And no matter what… I can’t seem to figure out what it means.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. You be tryin’ to do this by yourself. Maybe ya have more success with us here. Figure out what Vol’jin wants.
Rai says: If I had a way to talk to him…
Velameestra Windrunner says: That… may be able to be arranged.
Zar'Kaa says: Oh? How do you think?
Velameestra Windrunner says: If we have an item of his, I can reach out to him. If he’s willing to talk.
Zar'Kaa says: Well… perhaps if we get what we need from Zufli’jin, maybe that’s another thing we can check off. So this be some… type of spirit magic?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s a variety of arcane magic, yes.
Zar'Kaa says: Interestin’. Can’t say I know much of it myself. Might be askin’ more later.
Velameestra Windrunner says: By all means. We’re following up with Yenniku as well, yes?
Rai says: Why Yenniku?
Seria says: He be your half-brother.
Rai says: Wait… what?
Zar’Kaa looks at Seria again.
Rai says: Ya be tellin’ me… he was…
Some things start to connect.
Rai says: Everytime I think I saw my fatha’s spirit, I always run into Yenniku not long after. There were a few times like the embassy. Ya think that’s it? Ya think that’s what he was tryin’ to tell me? I didn’t think anyone else survived… We should be able to find him. He works at the embassy as a clerk. I can lead us there. Or I could bring us back to the Darkspear enclave. It be up to all of you.
Zar'Kaa says: I defer to the rest of you.
Rai says: I know that gettin’ my sista to get in on this may be hard… but maybe we can fill Yenniku in on this at the same time?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Considering Yenniku may be blindsided by all this… it may be worth talking to him first.
Zar’Kaa squats down to think.
Zar'Kaa says: We tell him now, it may be disrupt the power balance of the Darkspear tribe. While he do have the right to know… I don’t think this be the time…
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well… he will need to come back with us. And we’re going to need to tell him why that is and why he’s relevant to Zalazane at all.
Zar'Kaa says: Aight. How about this… we tell Yenniku and he take that news as he does. We can’t tell Zufli’jin right now. It won’t be good for the Darkspear. She got the right to know, but right now, that’s gonna disrupt what she be tryin’ to build up. When Zalazane last attacked there was a bit of a… power void she’s been tryin’ to fill. This revelation would only make such a thing more difficult.
Rai says: I think ya raise a good point… but keepin’ information from her won’t be any easier.
Zar'Kaa says: Maybe we disclose it if we have to. But otherwise… I don’t want to be infringing on her authority.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Sorry if I’m misunderstanding… but isn’t there two Darkspear tribes as it is?
Zar'Kaa says: In a matter of speakin’... but maybe someday… nevermind.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …If you’re talking about reuniting the tribes eventually, it’s inevitably going to get back to her, isn’t it? Rokhan said he was going to tell Vanira, so she likely knows, right?
Zar'Kaa says: …Right. Yeah, I suppose lead the way Rai.
Rai says: Stay close everyone.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And don't bump into anyone. The illusion won’t hold up to touching.
Rai says: And watch out for the brutosaurs.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Brutosaurs?
At that moment a massive, long-necked dinosaur trumpets and they see a three of the huge creatures carrying cargo and other supplies. Vel looks up at it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Oh. I suppose Gil is missing out.
Remnii says [tongues]: That belongs on Draenor.
Zar'Kaa says: Draenor?
Remnii says [tongues]: A former home.
Zar'Kaa says: Ah. These one’s not gonna eat ya, but they turn ya into a flat cake if ya don’t keep your distance.
Remnii and Uther both seem to be dumbstruck for a moment, but the group weaves their way through the streets after Rai. They enter the shadow of the Great Seal, and head towards the enclaves of the different types of trolls. Upon seeing the forest troll embassy and some representatives of the Amani, Zar’Kaa hawks a loogie on the ground at it. Luckily, none of the Amani see him.
Seria elbows Zar’Kaa hard, having caught the action.
Seria says: Ya told them not to start shit, don’t ya be doin’ that either.
Zar'Kaa says: Not to worry. Had the been outside Zandalar, their heads would be mine.
Remnii says [tongues]: …Should… should we worry then?
Zar'Kaa says: Complicated situation. I’ll tell ya some other time.
Rai says: This entire district be built to deal with those complications.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Then it would be wise that no further ones are started.
Rai says: Yeah… don’t want to be carted to the prisons.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Respectfully, anyone that does is going to just get left behind.
Rai says: Don’t worry, I won’t start anything!
Velameestra Windrunner says: …I’m… not worried about you, Rai.
They pass by some ice trolls that are clearly suffering in the oppressive heat, and Rai leads them to the embassy of the jungle trolls.
Rai says: The embassy be here. We can see if he be there today!
Inside, the large open area is bustling. There are guards patrolling the area outside, and there is further general security in the busy embassy inside. There is a jungle troll receptionist, and they wait in a brief line before they are able to speak with her.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: Welcome to the embassy. How can I help you? What be the nature of your business?
Zar'Kaa says: We be needing to speak to one of your employees.
The troll raises her brow.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: What ya be needin’ to speak about?
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re looking for Yenniku.
The receptionist’s eyes narrow.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: Is that so?
Zar'Kaa says: We just need to talk.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: He be pretty popular nowadays. What does this boy get into…
Zar'Kaa says: Who else he be popular with?
Gurubashi Receptionist says: Some others come by not too long ago. He requested the rest of the day off. Luckily we have enough workers here. Ya just missed him. He left with the others.
Zar'Kaa says: Ya know where they be headin’?
The receptionist furrows her brow.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: I don’t know if I should be telling ya that. He ain’t even here.
Zar'Kaa says: I be Zar’Kaa representing the Darkspear tribe. Yenniku… I know him one way or the other. I just want to talk to him.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: Ya realize how shady that sounded, ya? Look, ya be welcome to leave a message. We can see if he knows this Zar’Kaa. I got people waitin’ behind you, and I’m not lookin’ to get him in trouble.
Vel sighs.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He’s not going to know Zar’Kaa. Apologies. We’re here because of a recent family revelation. We just want to speak with him.
The troll looks at Vel.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: Look. I don’t know what is goin’ on here, but what ya got is true, ya free to pass on whatever information ya got. When he shows up tomorrow then maybe I can pass the message along and see if he wants ta meet up with ya somewhere. But I can’t be tellin’ ya where he went off to, or in what direction.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I understand. Worker protections. Thank you for your time.
The receptionist nods and mutters about “weird people”. The group leaves, and they can just barely hear her mutter under her breath.
Gurubashi Receptionist says: That boy better not be gettin’ into any trouble…
She turns to focus on the next person in line.
As the group exits the embassy, Vel leans over to Zar’Kaa.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As someone that is… well-versed in the shadier sides of business, sometimes it’s better not to be shady.
Zar’Kaa sighs.
Zar'Kaa says:And at other times, discretion be somethin’ that we should pursue. But I take your point.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As it turns out, having a lost sibling means absolutely nothing beyond having a lost sibling.
Rai says: Well… regardless, we know he’s not here. And we know he went somewhere with some people…
Seria heads over to an alley and pulls out her scrying bowl. A half a dozen saurids turn to look at her. Seria casts [Scrying], focusing on Yenniku–and a scene appears. There is a jungle troll who is fairly lanky with dark blue hair walking through a dark blue alley. He seems to be on alert and not particularly comfortable. He’s not alone. There are a few larger Zandalari trolls with him.
He is pushed forward.
Yenniku says: I be goin’! Calm yourself. There be no reason to get like that. I got a personally reasonable explanation to give your boss lady. Lets keep it nice and casual.
The Zandalari woman looks at him unkindly.
Burly Zandalari Woman says: The White Shark be the final player. Ya owe us a bit too much money to be makin’ demands, boy.
Yenniku says: It was just a loan! Ya told me I had plenty of time to pay it back. I’ve been doing my best! Things are complicated. Ya know that. Things always be complicated.
The Zandalari woman smacks him across the face.
Yenniku says: Alright. I’ll move faster. My apologizes. Ahhh…
His right tusk was now slightly broken.
Yenniku says: I get why they call you the tusk-breaker.
Burly Zandalari Woman says: Shut up and move, or I’ll be givin’ ya a matching set.
They are fairly sure the alley was closer to the docks. Seria could hear the waves faintly. Rai pales, having come over to take a closer look.
Rai says: ‘Dat’s not good. I know that name. The White Shark is a pretty infamous criminal. She’s… uh… pretty influential in the docks district. If he’s been dealin’ with her, he might be in a bit of trouble.
Zar'Kaa says: So. We gonna need to get him back before the White Shark takes his head…
Velameestra Windrunner says: I would hope it wouldn’t end in beheading… Where is the docks district?
Rai points them in the direction, but then they hear some scrabbling. There are small creatures fighting over something. When they glance in that direction, something hits the ground. At the end of the alleyway, two of the saurids are wrestling with Vel’s wand of arcane missiles.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You’ve got to be kidding me, again?!
The saurids immediately bolt. Vel tries to grab her wand with [Telekinesis], but the saurid wiggles out of the spell and Tol’vas and Vel race after the saurids. In frustration, Vel tries to dome the saurids with [Wall of Force]. Vel manages to snag some of them, but not the one with her wand.
Zar’Kaa manages to catch up to the saurid that grabbed Vel’s wand. He wrestles the wand away.
Zar'Kaa says: Go on, get.
He holds up the wand as the group approaches.
Zar'Kaa says: Seems I found a gift for you!
However, his throat clenches, and Zar’Kaa starts to get picked up off the ground. By seemingly nothing. More eyes light up in the darkness of the alley.
Impish Voice says: I think ya got somethin’ that belongs to me, richmon!
There is a pressure on Zar’Kaa’s wrist, and he drops the wand. He is then released. A saurid emerges from the trash pile, its scales bright pink.
Pink Saurid says: Well well well, look what the tides brought in!
Tol’vas gets the sense this is not a regular Saurid, and Zar’Kaa gets a similar sense. It’s some kind of loa. Zar’Kaa snarls.
Zar'Kaa says: What the fuck? Be stealin’ Zar’Kaa’s breath for a wand.
Pink Saurid says: Your friends be stealin’ the breath of many more, richmon!
Zar'Kaa says: I’m not a rich mon.
Pink Saurid says: Richmon. Poormon. Ya not be seein’ the point, mon.
Zar'Kaa says: I’ll be showin’ ya a point, mon!
Zar'Kaa draws his weapon, but Tol’vas gets in the middle of them.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: We don’t need to threaten a wild god.
Pink Saurid says: Ya be smart, richmon. At least ya be here.
Rai’s eyes are wide.
Rai says: Jani? The loa of outcasts? The loa of scavengers?
Jani says: Ya. But ya know a few things about that. Ya be scavengers of your own, ya. I be smellin’ the scent of my children on ya. Their blood. And their riches, richmon.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: Your children weren’t even your children then.
Jani rumbles and cocks his head to the side.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: They were driven mad.
Jani says: Hmm… that be so, richmon? I had a feelin’ there might be somethin’ more to that. Ya all smell like blood and trash. But not blood thirst. Not only blood thirst, hek hek.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: I’m certain I smell like that to you.
Jani says: You smell like a lot of things. And some of those things belong to my children.
Zar'Kaa says: Such as?
Jani says: The richmon knows. Jani be a generous loa, but Jani don’t like it when people take from his children.
Zar'Kaa says: So now with the wand and the coins, ya got what you wanted, ya?
Velameestra Windrunner says: That wand was a gift. I would like that back.
The saurid that has Vel’s wand holds the wand tighter, but Jani snaps at the saurid and it reluctantly goes and delivers the wand back to Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Thank you.
Jani says: You are all interestin’. Seems ya be stumblin’ into one of Jani’s homes. Jani look over a lot of things. Especially you two.
He looks at Zar’Kaa and Seria.
Zar'Kaa says: And how are you lookin’ over us?
Jani says: Richmon not listenin’ with those big ears.
Zar'Kaa says: Zar’Kaa only knows what he is told.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: If Jani is the patron of outcasts, then perhaps that’s what he’s talking about?
Jani laughs.
Jani says: Not everyone choose to be livin’ in the sun. Not everyone choose to be livin in the shade.
Zar'Kaa says: No. Some just choose to be livin’. So, if Jani do be seein’ over us. In what way can we request the assistance of Jani?
Jani taps one of his talons on his chin.
Jani says: I don’t know, richmon. Jani hasn’t even gotten an apology yet. Hek hek hek.
Zar'Kaa says: Well… I can’t speak for the rest of me companions. I wasn’t with them when they took your children’s things. But I be sorry. Hopefully in that way at least, the debt be paid. As for me, well, I was only tryin’ to help them out. So for my trespasses, I be sorry for that.
Jani says: Then maybe richmon be learnin’ a lesson.
There are some other whispers, and there are some windows that are lining the alley. There are a few young figures in them–a fair number of young trolls that seem to be destitute. Some of the saurids hop up and deliver the satchel of coins to the children.
Zar’Kaa looks at the children, most of which being young non-Zandalari.
Zar'Kaa says: So you… be takin’ from others and giving it to these ones?
Jani says: Jani be given’ to those who need. It don’t matter how they be needin’. Even you.
Zar'Kaa says: Me?
Zar’Kaa points to himself and looks around.
Jani says: All of you.
Jani starts to draw something in the air. It’s a [Mass Polymorph] spell.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …before we go mass polymorphing, what exactly is going on?
The loa releases the spell. Vel looks at her new white-scaled saurid body and squeaks indignantly. Seria looks at her and smirks in amusement, having resisted the spell. Everyone else also became saurids. Jani turns and runs to the trash pile.
Jani says: Follow me, richmon!
He scurries into the trash heap.and disappears into the gold. The others all follow (Seria using her own magic to shift into a saurid) unsure what else to do, and it seems to be some sort of a pocket dimension and series of tunnels.
Then they exit the tunnels and promptly are transformed back to their humanoid forms. Jani and the other saurids are gone. Vel promptly uses [Prestidigitation] on herself to cleanse the filth off, and Remnii also asks for one. Seria and Rai offer some thanks to Jani while Vel notices one of the Zandalari guards who had come out and is looking around.
Zandalari Bladeguard says: Can anyone hear me? We need reinforcements! Anyone! Dammit.
She does not seem to be wounded.
Velameestra Windrunner says: What’s going on?
Zandalari Bladeguard says: A priestess is standing up to some ne'er-do-wells in the alley. I can’t hold them off myself.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Where are they?
Zandalari Bladeguard says: I can show you. Who are you?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Bystanders. You need help, don’t you?
Zandalari Bladeguard says: Fair point.
Rai offers to run off to continue looking for more help while the guard leads the rest of the group to the alley she was talking about. There are a number of abandoned stalls, while others are manned by people ignoring the scuffle that’s going on. There is a platform, and there are about a dozen or so Zandalari trolls. In the center is a fearsome Zandalari troll with a white mohawk, and she has a vicious-looking dagger made of sharkbone, and she is holding Yenniku by the neck.
She is looking at another troll–another tall woman with nice clothing. She has a bandana over her forehead, and long, deep violet hair up in an afro. She is alone, and standing defiantly. There are two others next to the woman that is like the White Shark–one of them the woman Yenniku had called Tusk-Breaker. In the shadows in a Zandalari troll with a strict-looking back braid.
Zandalari Priestess says: You will release that man at once! Whatever is going on here, cease it and go back to your business.
White Shark says: You be a little bit far from the districts that you should be in, little girl. I give you five seconds to turn around before my boys teach ya some discipline. This be my business, and it be none of yours.
The bladeguard leading the group draws her weapon.
Zandalari Bladeguard says: What is going on here? Stand down!
The White Shark glances over.
White Shark says: Ahhh, you brought friends, did ya? Walk away, and there are not gonna be no problems.
Zar'Kaa says: Unfortunately, you holdin’ that boy by the throat be the problem.
Zar’Kaa draws his own weapons. Seria starts to cast [Hold Person].
White Shark says: So be it. Teach them all a lesson, boys!
She slams Yenniku against the wall and draws a longer sharkbone weapon.
Zar'Kaa says: Bring it on then! For the Darkspear!
He closes on the nearest bruiser and severs his arm, and then goes through and cuts off the man’s head with his spear.
The rest of the party are somewhat dumbstruck.
Remnii says [tongues]: Oh… oh dear, he’s dead.
He then follows through and cuts into the second bruiser, rending his leg and slicing his throat.
White Shark says: KILL HIM.
The priestess blinks.
Zandalari Priestess says: Stand down and this does not need to continue!
The White Shark snarls and another of the bruisers shoots an arrow at Seria. The White Shark tries to slam Zar’Kaa in the temple, but he brushes it off, and then tries to gut him. Her companions move in as well. However, Zar’Kaa is able to dodge the attacks.
Uther casts [Fire Bolt] at Tuskbreaker Yana, and it collides into her. One of the cutthroats gets under Zar’Kaa’s defenses and opens up a wound.
Yenniku gets shakily to his feet as other civilian trolls start to flee.
Seria casts hold person on the White Shark, Tuskbreaker Yana, and Bad Mojo Hojo. Both Hojo and Yana seize up, but the White Shark is able to break free.
Seria says: Did you not hear her? She said stand down!
The White Shark strikes at Zar’Kaa again, but is unable to land a hit.
Tol’vas casts [Conjure Animals] by enhancing it so he could cast in wolf form, and sixteen saurids start to leap out of the shadows. An arrow soars down from a sniper in the shadows and grazes Seria’s armor. However, she holds on to her hold person.
Vel just stares at the decapitated troll for a moment, and she and Remnii exchange a bewildered look. Vel then activates her bladesong and starts to approach one of the trolls trying to flank them–which is already surrounded by saurids. She casts [Toll the Dead].
One of the saurids is cut down.
Remnii summons a [Spiritual Weapon] and starts to creep up the stairs, taking in the carnage. The spiritual weapon swings at Tuskbreaker Yana as Remnii casts [Mind Sliver].
Zandalari Priestess says: I believe you have the right idea!
The priestess casts [Hold Monster] on the White Shark, who seizes up.
Zandalari Priestess says: Surrender, and you’ll be taken in for judgement by the bladeguards!
Zandalari Bladeguard says: Excellent work! If we can take their leaders alive, we can press charges against them!
One of the bruisers suddenly disappears under a sea of saurids. The White Shark is able to break free of the paralysis. Yana is rapidly getting shred up by the saurids.
The White Shark starts to back up.
White Shark says: Lets get out of here. We’ll be back for you later, Yenniku!
Seria drops [Hold Person] and steps forward, once again nabbing the White Shark and Hojo as she casts the spell again.
Seria says: I told you to stand down!
One of the sharpshooters shoots at Seria again, who manages to hold on to her spell. Yana manages to cut down three of the saurids.
Uther closes on one of the remaining bruisers and leaves him stunned with a glow of holy light. With another swing, Uther cracks the bruiser over the head–dropping him unconscious. He then quickens a [Thunder Step] and appears on the other side of the White Shark and Hojo–blocking their escape if they break free.
Zandalari Priestess says: Throw down your weapons, now!
She casts [Command] on the unheld bruiser and cutthroat as well as Yana. They all throw their weapons down, and they all surrender.
The sniper turns and escapes.
Zar’Kaa approaches the White Shark, and the bladeguard also runs forward and pulls out gilded manacles to apprehend her and Hojo.
Seeing they were taken care of, Zar’Kaa opts to head over to Yenniku–who is starting to fully come to. He pulls out a dagger.
Yenniku says: I won’t be going down without a fight!
He looks somewhat concussed, and Zar’Kaa sheathes his weapons.
Zar'Kaa says: Relax. Ain’t here to harm you, Yenniku. Just put that down and let Zar’Kaa take a look at you.
The saurids disperse and start to scavenge from the stalls. Vel and Uther both check their belongings to make sure nothing else was stolen from them.
Zar’Kaa pulls out one of his poultices.
Zar'Kaa says: Here. Take this. Get back on your feet and hopefully you don’t feel so terrible.
Yenniku still looks beat up. Seria sits down to tend to some of her wounds, and Remnii also takes a look at her as well.
White Shark says: You can’t prove anything! This was personal business!
She continues to spit insults.
Yenniku holds up his hand.
Yenniku says: I… can probably help with that.
Zandalari Bladeguard says: You’ll have to explain it to the Zanchuli council, not to me.
Zandalari Priestess says: You all have my thanks for your assistance. It was fortunate you arrived when you did. Though I’m confident I could have de-escalated the situation on my own, your assistance was much appreciated.
Zar'Kaa says: It was brave of you to stand up to them on your own. I’m not sure it would have gone as well as you may have hoped.
Zandalari Priestess says: Hmph. These cowards and their ways would be no threat to me. I am protected by the loa. I’m capable of taking care of myself, Mister…?
Zar'Kaa says: Zar’Kaa of the Darkspear tribe.
Zandalari Priestess says: I heard as much before you cut down two of them. The Darkspear are decisive, as I’ve heard. But it is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Rive.
Zar'Kaa says: It be my pleasure as well. Ya be right. When the Darkspear decide to take a life, it is taken decisively and swiftly nonetheless.
Rive says: Now if you don’t mind me asking, what are you doing here?
Zar'Kaa says: We be here for this one.
He points at Yenniku.
Yenniku says: I’ve got more than a few questions, but I suppose thanks are in order.
Zar'Kaa says: No thanks be necessary.
He looks at Rive.
Zar'Kaa says: We need this one as part of a task. And what were you doin’? Just come across this gang?
Rive says: I was in the area and saw this man being accosted. I saw fit to step in. Nothing more, nothing less.
Zar'Kaa says: if it weren’t for you, they might have gotten to Yenniku here.
Zandalari Bladeguard says: I appreciate all your assistance, though there are going to be explanations to be had. This is… highly irregular. Citizens arrests are not exactly normal. As much as I appreciate your assistance, I need to explain this to my superiors.
Velameestra Windrunner says: You… asked us for help?
Zandalari Bladeguard says: I did, and I’ll be explaining that as well.
Rive says: What’s your name?
Zandalari Bladeguard says: Kaja, priestess.
Rive says: A pleasure to meet you, Kaja. This does seem to be a bit of a mess. From what I understand, there is a sizeable bounty on those three. And if they returned, they would be responsible for claiming the bounty, right?
Bladeguard Kaja says: Correct.
Rive says: If you were to report to your superiors that a concerned citizen like myself and you were able to subdue these individuals… would that not be easier? Perhaps a simple donation to the temple of Rezan and we can call this finished without troubling these wanderers. Seeing you did pull them from their business?
Bladeguard Kaja says: Correct. I… would have to speak to my superiors.
The priestess chuckles.
Rive says: Relax, Kaja, it’s alright. We can take care of this. After all, I’m sure someone will come before long.
The ground starts to rumble, and at the far side of the thoroughfare is a massive creature. It’s a devilsaur–one that is very large and plated with black and golden armor It is charging down with a Zandalari warrior astride it. Rai is tailing behind all of them.
The warriors draw their large glaives and lock down the area.
Zandalari Warrior says: Everyone, do not move! This is under the protection of Rezan!
Rive says: There they are. Rata, good to see you. The situation has been handled.
The warrior drops from the devilsaur and lands on the stone, revealing ornate metal and leather armor. They have a beautiful glaive, and a shock of blue hair.
Rata says: Your highness! You’re unharmed!
Rive says: I’m find, Rata. I can explain everything. We will need your assistance escorting a few criminals that this brave guard was responsible for claiming.
Rata says: Who are these others?
Rive says: Bystanders.
Rata says: Understood.
Rai approaches with an older Zandalari troll who has many braids woven ornately. Her eyes are clouded, and she looks at Vel–then squints.
Zandalari Elder says: Bystanders, eh?
She has a simple cane, and a spider crawls onto her hand.
Zandalari Elder says: What curious bystanders. You aren’t harmed then, I would hope?
Velameestra Windrunner says: No, absolutely fine. Kaja was a pinnacle of her unit.
Zandalari Elder says: Bladeguard Kaja…
Bladeguard Kaja says: Yes ma’am!
The woman turns and looks with a wrinkled smile.
Zandalari Elder says: Is what they say true? You are a member of general Rakera’s unit, yes?
Bladeguard Kaja says: Yes ma’am.
Zandalari Elder says: Well it’s good these bystanders were here to sing your praises as well. Go on then, all of you. Help the bladeguard get them back. They’ll stand their trials. I believe we’ve seen enough of this peculiar happenstance.
The woman turns and starts to walk away. But then she stops.
Zandalari Elder says: I would hope you stay out of any further trouble in my city, bystander. Or you may not be so lucky to run into such an outstanding bladeguard.
She then continues moving. Vel notes that there are several spiders living in her cloak, just hanging out.
Rive says: I suggest the rest of you go and tend to your friend’s injuries. Enjoy the city. I hope this has not soured your opinion. There are problems in every corner of the world, but without seeing them, we can’t fix them, can we?
Zar'Kaa says: You speak the truth.
Rive says: Loa watch over you.
Rive bows.
Zar'Kaa says: Stay safe. I won’t forget this if I return here anytime soon.
Rive says: Perhaps if we meet again it’ll be on less dangerous circumstances.
Rive smiles and then goes to head off.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: Actually, I came here for another reason.
Rive looks down at the wolf.
Rive says: What a curious loa.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: I’m not a loa, but I was hoping to meet with some. I have questions.
Rive says: That is an interesting proposal… if you are not a loa, then what are you, curious talking wolf? A child of one, or something more?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: Something less, actually. I don’t think I would be as welcome here if I wore my actual face.
Rive says: Then perhaps it be dangerous for you to be asking such questions. If you seek an audience with the loa, many make their shrines in the garden. But such a place is not safe for outsiders. If you wish it… however, wayward little wolf, there may be one who may be more inclined to speak with you.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: I’m willing to accept the risk.
Rive says: If you have a way to get to Xolatal, it is a holy place where the loa have lived and died for many years. I can only assume you are one of the sons of Zumaata. I am but a humble servant of Rezan, loa of kings. Zumaata is one I only know in stories and tales. But look into it discretely, strange little wolf.
Rive turns and joins the others, and there is a quiet bickering between Rive and the spider-woman. However, Rive brushes off the concerns the older woman seems to have. The members of the White Shark’s Remora gang are taken away.
Rai makes his way over.
Rai says: I guess that works. I’m glad you were able to find him.
Yenniku says: What the hell are you doing here, boy? Didn’t I tell ya to stop bumping into me? Are these friends of yours?
Rai says: That be right…
Yenniku says: Well… I guess ‘dis time you weren’t a pain in my ass. I actually have to thank you. And the rest of you. Now why were you looking for me?
Zar'Kaa says: There don’t be any easy way to say this… Yenniku, you know you came from the Darkspear tribe originally, yes?
Yenniku furrows his brow.
Yenniku says: I don’t know much about my life, and now I’m curious how you know about it. You’re not trying to extort me too, are ya?
Zar'Kaa says: No. I only want to tell you what I’ve learned about your lineage. There not be an easy way to say it, but you and Rai be half-brothers. Which would make you the son of the late Vol’jin.
Yenniku stares at Zar’kaa, looks at Rai, and glances around at the rest of the group.
Yenniku says: So how did you find this out? And why are ya tellin’ me? What do you want? Money?
Velameestra Windrunner says: We don’t want money, no. Do you have somewhere quiet we can talk? It’s… a long story.
Yenniku says: I got a place, ya. It’s a bit safer than it was. Don’t expect any hospitality.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Certainly not.
After a bit, they arrive at a small flat that’s basically a hole-in-the-wall.
Yenniku says: Welcome to my humble abode. So what’s going on? What’s really going on? And what do you need me for?
Zar'Kaa says: Well. It would seem the loa Bwonsamdi, patron of the Darkspear, seems to have found a few spirits that have been released back into the world. One of them is the spirit of Vol’jin.
Yenniku says: That sounds like his problem, not mine. What? Did ya expect me to care? Even if what you say is true, why should I care?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Are you familiar with Zalazane?
Yenniku says: I think most are.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Zalazane is one of the spirits that escaped. We’re trying to track him down.
Yenniku says: He started the troll wars some twenty or so years ago.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And came back and tried to start a third one.
Yenniku says: Did he now? Didn’t hear about tha’ one.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It was stopped before it took off.
Yenniku says: Good. The second troll wars were a bit of a disaster from what I heard.
Zar'Kaa says: They were. But we got a lead on how to get to Zalazane. If we can do that, we can put down his spirit. Put in the hands of Bwonsamdi or someone else–keep him from comin’ back again. But to get to him, we need to conduct a ritual. One of the things we need belongs to the current Darkspear chieftain, Zufli’jin.
Yenniku says: How does that have anything to do with me?
Velameestra Windrunner says: …the other part of that. It’s a… metaphorical thing. The body and mind of Zalazane will lead us to him. If you are the firstborn son of Vol’jin, given the ties Vol’jin had with Zalazane, you would count as metaphorically being one with his blood–in a manner of speaking.
She pauses briefly before continuing–realizing how her statement could easily be misconstrued.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re not going to kill you, or anything. That’s not part of it.
Yenniku says: I was just gonna say…
Velameestra Windrunner says: Also, your mother is back where we came from.
Yenniku visibly freezes.
Yenniku says: She… be alive then?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes. She didn’t know you were alive either.
Yenniku says: The war and the last few decades made it difficult to keep track of things like that. Especially when ya give up your own flesh and blood. I’m not surprised to hear that. I’m more surprised to hear she gives two shits about someone like me. She gave me up in the first place.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That doesn’t mean she doesn’t care. Mothers care about their sons.
Yenniku says: I don’t think I would know. I’ll have to take your word on it.
There is obvious sarcasm in his voice. Seria promptly stands up and goes to punch Yenniku, who immediately backs up out of his chair and holds his hands up.
Yenniku says: Woah! Don’t!
Seria says: I heard enough out of your mouth. You should be respectin’ the people that saved yer life. Enough of the snark.
Yenniku says: Alright alright, you’re right. Sorry. It’s been a day. Just don’t hit me. I saw what ya can do. I’d rather keep my insides on the insides. Sorry, ya said no snarkin’. It’s how I deal with stress.
Zar'Kaa says: Look, mon. Ya got the right to feel how you feel. I can’t imagine what that experience was like. It may explain why you are now. But while Zalazane be roamin’, none of us are gonna be safe. And that includes you. Even if ya don’t give a damn, it includes your family as well. Those that still remain. We need ya so we can stop this before it begins. As for me personally, I seen what Zalazane can do. I walked over a sea of me dead people. Wrought by the carnage of his madness. So personally? I’m gonna do whatever I need to do to make sure Zalazane gets stopped. I think I can say the same for everyone else here. We aren’t asking you to put your body on the line or fight him, we just askin’ for your help.
Yenniku looks around the group and sits up again.
Yenniku says: There… really be somethin’ someone like me can do to help you?
Seria says: We wouldn’t be here otherwise.
Yenniku says: And ya don’t think ya got the wrong Yenniku?
Velameestra Windrunner says: No… Bwonsamdi basically confirmed it.
Yenniku says: You’re a bunch of crazy of bastards.
Zar'Kaa says: We’re going to take on Zalazane, so yes.
Yenniku says: I don’t even know what that means… but you got me out of that bind, and for as much as the problems may bite me later…
Velameestra Windrunner says: To be fair, those are not problems you’ll need to deal with if you aren’t here.
Yenniku says: I don’t think I can go long, mon. I don’t have much control over my life. I never had. I can’t just run off and live a happy life.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: Why?
Yenniku says: They will come and find me.
Zar'Kaa says: Or they come after the Darkspear in the city.
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...why, exactly?
Zar'Kaa says: They know where he came from.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m… not sure they would have originally immediately drawn that connection, exactly.
Yenniku says: I can at least get a few days. Even if it’s just to keep her from punchin’ me. And I have some questions for the woman that brought me into this world…
Zar'Kaa says: That sounds as good a reason as any. Thank you. This be up to you. So I appreciate you be willing to come back with us.
Yenniku says: It be no big deal. It won’t hurt to get out of the city for a couple days.
Zar'Kaa says: Who knows. Ya may see a new perspective along the way.
Yenniku rolls his eyes.
Zar'Kaa says: In any case, time is of the essence. We plan to go speak to Zufli’jin as soon as possible. If you have preparations to make for the short trip, now is the time.
Yenniku says: I just got to make a short stop at the embassy. If you’re looking to speak with Zufli, it’s not far away. I don’t know if there’s much I can do to help her, but we can at least be in one place.
Zar'Kaa says: Sounds like a plan. Whenever you’re ready.
Yenniku gathers up his stuff, and glances at Rai a few times while mumbling to himself. However, it doesn’t take him long to gather his things.
Yenniku says: Alright. Quick stop at the embassy to get a few days, then we’ll meet up with… I suppose that would be my half-sister too, ya?
Zar'Kaa says: If you don’t want to, you don’t got to address it now.
Rai says: For what it’s worth, Yenniku… I still get stressed when I talk to my sista.
Yenniku snorts and claps Rai on the shoulder.
Yenniku says: Great pep talk. Yer real good at this.
He shakes Rai’s shoulder, and Rai sighs. Seria taps Yenniku on the back of the head.
Yenniku says: Ah! What!?
They stop by the embassy briefly and Yenniku informs them he’s clear.
Yenniku says: You can get me back, right?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [tongues]: As long as we’re not dead.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …which ideally will not be the case.
Remnii says [tongues]: Snark is common.
Yenniku has his rucksack over his shoulder, and they head towards the Darkspear embassy. Vel notes, at one of the weapon stalls, two vrykul with sun-kissed tan skin and deep brown here. They are bartering over weapons, but are not wearing any clan emblems she recognizes. They also see some small, fox-like humanoids who were selling fried snakes.
Tol’vas walks over to Remnii and gives her puppy dog eyes. Remnii looks at Tol’vas then at Yenniku.
Remnii says [tongues]: You want one too?
Yenniku says: ...Sure, how much do you need?
Remnii says [tongues]: I think you’ve been hassled enough today. And we are dragging you on a mystery quest!
Yenniku looks dumbstruck, and Remnii offers to cover lunch for everyone.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m… alright, thank you.
Remnii looks at Vel for a long moment but then smiles and nods. Zar’Kaa also passes. Tol’vas points with his paw at one of the snakes, and Remnii also tries the snake. It’s actually quite good.
In the distance, they see a small village of temporary residents where the Darkspear are staying. Zar’Kaa takes a deep breath.
Zar'Kaa says: Here we go…
Remnii says [tongues]: Yenniku, may I catch you for a second?
Yenniku says: No problem. Thanks, by the way.
He waves the snake kabob at her.
Remnii says [tongues]: Of course. Family things are complex, and to be called upon on such strange matters is taxing, but I hope this is ample compensation…
She pulls out small crystals.
Remnii says [tongues]: For everything you are going to do. If you take these to get appraised, these should be worth your time and your stress. I hope this can help. Think of it as a… paid vacation?
Yenniku takes the crystals.
Yenniku says: I… don’t know what to say…
Remnii says [tongues]: You don’t have to say anything. There are times we all need help, and sometimes that help comes in the form of a boost one way or another.
Yenniku nods.
Yenniku says: This be quite the boost…
He’s rather dumbstruck, and speechless. Remnii smiles.
