July 8th
The group is escorted by a group of five Wardens--including Istaria Staghelm--through the Sentinels’ base and military grove that is woven beneath the roots of Nordrassil. The Wardens hover in a loose formation around the group, and many Sentinels stop and stare at the peculiar group--especially at Remnii.
One of the trees moves, identifying it clearly as one of the ancients.
The party travels for about 20 minutes, seeing roosting hippogriffs overhead once more, and eventually they reach a series of caves with a large stone doorway. The head Warden holds up a disk, and the runes in the stones glow as the door opens, and the group is led into the depths of the Barrow Deeps.
It’s quite dark at first, but a few Wardens raise their fists to summon lights around their gauntlets or umbral blades. The caverns beneath seem to be a marriage between architecture and natural caves, with bioluminescent fungi shedding dim light. The first thing they see is a massive root that crawls into a large pond. There are multiple levels built into the natural-forming cave formations.
Night Elf Warden says: This way. We’ll take you to processing where we can get you to your cells.
They head over a bridge of stone that crosses over faintly glowing water, and they are led into a chamber that is more crafted stonework than natural cavern. There are a few other night elven women there, which seem to be wearing a variant of the Sentinels’ uniforms which has a darker color scheme that is likely representative of their position as Watchers. Two Wardens break off, but two others and Istaria remain.
There is a very large night elven woman present--an inch or two taller than Tol’vas and much broader, and her armor depicts a reasonably high rank. She does not have a full helmet, but has a visor that she removes as she offers a disarmingly kind smile.
She has dark, blackish green hair that is partially shaved with a long ponytail.
Lieutenant Naisha says: Welcome, everyone. I know this is a pain, but we’ll make sure we can make things as comfortable as possible. My name is Naisha. We will have to go through your belongings to ensure they are well-chronicled. If you’ll be kind enough to cooperate… for your own safety, any of you who are wearing heavier armor, please remove your armor so that we can keep it maintained in storage. You have no need to remove your clothing, of course, but anything you have needs to be recorded.
Various Watchers and Wardens approach to go through the group’s belongings and record their names.
Night Elf Warden says: This is yours?
She looks at the hilt of the diamond blade that she had brought as she glances at him.
Aramar Thorne says: Be careful with that.
The Warden nods.
Another Watcher going through Remnii’s bag seems to grimace as she pulls the seed pod out.
Night Elf Watcher says [darnassian]: What is this?
The other Watchers shrug, and then ask Remnii.
Remnii says [tongues]: A seed spore from my homeworld.
Night Elf Watcher says: Is it dangerous?
Remnii says [tongues]: As long as you don’t plant it or throw it.
Night Elf Watcher says: Do you… need it to be preserved?
Remnii says [tongues]: I would prefer that, yes.
Night Elf Watcher says: ...Very well.
They continue going through her gems, and then get to the hoof cream.
Night Elf Watcher says [darnassian]: Isn’t that tauren hoof cream?
They then look at Remnii’s hooves and realize that makes sense.
Naisha goes on to explain that the cells are magically protected so no one can use magic within them, and sleep is ultimately not required nor is eating or relieving themselves.
Another Watcher looks over Elissa’s painting supplies and expresses in darnassian that she is quite talented.
Elissa Cross says: Oh… can I keep those? To occupy myself?
A Warden shrugs and relents as long as Elissa doesn’t get into trouble with it.
Aramar Thorne says: Can I keep my sketchbook then?
They also concede to the sketchbook.
Other Watchers just keep going through Makasa’s alcohol and Makasa just grins.
Makasa Flintwill says: You’re welcome to try some if you think you can handle it.
The Watchers don’t note anything particular in Seria’s belongings, and they leave her mother’s tusk necklace, but they request that she removes her mother’s ring.
They take Tae’shara’s spellbook, and she pulls a dagger out of her boot. A Warden scowls at her and she apologizes because she forgot.
The Watchers did not expect to find a mining pick in Uther’s belongings, and one of them pulls out a crate. They open it, and the crate promptly expands into an entire boat. A few of them back up and grab weapons, but upon seeing it’s a boat, there is a combination of irritation, shock, and some chuckling. They spend the next few minutes trying to cram it into the box.
They also take the librum and chat with each other in Darnassian, observing the book.
As they get to Vel’s belongings, they look in the vial case.
Night Elf Watcher says: Is this all blood samples?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes.
A Warden is called over and looks down at Vel and then at the vial case and then back at her again.
Night Elf Warden says: Why do you have… three dozen vials of blood?
Velameestra Windrunner says: A multitude of reasons. Some of them are magically potent hydra blood. Others are for research. Others still are those of my companions--a safeguard for scrying in the event we get separated.
Night Elf Warden says: ...Very well. I suppose we’ll preserve this for when you’re let free.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It would be most appreciated. I don’t want to kill another hydra.
One of the watchers behind the warden snickers, though the Warden does not seem to be particularly amused. They continue going through her things, and Vel cooperates, but when she gets to her mother’s spellbook, she hesitates.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I would… prefer to keep this one, though.
Night Elf Warden says: What is it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: My mother’s spellbook. It and my ring are the only two things I have left of her. I’d prefer to keep it.
The warden considers for a moment, and then furrows her brow.
Night Elf Warden says: You have me at a disadvantage, highborne. I must admit I do not know much about how your magic works. Despite the fact the cells are sealed against spellcraft, what purpose do these books hold for your ilk?
Velameestra Windrunner says: They’re how we prepare our spellwork and rituals. But if magic is not possible, they are functionally inert objects.
The Warden looks down at the spellbook, and there is another pause, but she pushes it back to her.
Night Elf Warden says: Very well, you may keep this one.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Thank you.
The warden nods, and then Vel starts to pull off her ring after a brief apology to Kel'Thuzad.
Kel'Thuzad says [telepathically]: I don’t like this… but try not to go insane with boredom.
Velameestra Windrunner says: This was her’s as well. Please keep it safe.
Night Elf Warden says: Of course. It will not be touched after it’s gone through processing. Not until it’s returned to you.
They also relent that Vel can keep her journal, but they give her one of their own quills that functions endlessly as long as they are in the cells.
Lieutenant Naisha says: Alright, I think we’re ready to get you all sorted. I know this is frustrating. If you would prefer to rest until this is over, just let one of the Watchers know and they can pass it on so that you can have a pleasant slumber until we get to the end of this unfortunate business. They will check in once a day. Thank you all for your cooperation. Miss Moonwarden will get you all to your cells. They’ve been prepared. Please follow her.
Warden Sira Moonwarden says: This way, please.
She and a few other Watchers and another Warden lead them into the facility and they find themselves walking through the multiple rows of inlaid caverns. They get to the second floor and Sira points at Remnii and then Vel and says something in Darnassian.
Two Watchers lead Remnii and Vel down a tunnel.
A bit further, Seria and Elissa are taken into another alcove--but Riff is not stopped at the same place.
Riff says: Dat’s my mada. Can I stay with her?
Night Elf Watcher says: Keep moving. You won’t be alone, but that’s not your cell.
Riff looks after Seria, but a Watcher guides him further away. Another chunk of the group is directed--Makasa, Aramar, and Arthas.
Then there is another section where Tol’vas and Uther are directed.
Riff, Tae’shara, and Samaara keep moving.
As Tol’vas and Uther are escorted down a narrow tunnel, they can see metal bars that seem to fuse in with the stonework. They can see other people in some of the cells they pass, but they get a group of four cells that are unoccupied.
The Warden holds up her disk, and the bars sink into the stone.
Night Elf Warden says: Each of you pick one.
Each of the cells have a wooden desk and a pond of water that smells fresh. There is no bed, but there is a long bedroll that has a rough-hewn leather blanket. There are also some chains in the room, but the Warden makes no effort to use them--they are short and are a part of the far wall next to the water.
They opt for cells across from each other, the Warden summons the bars back into place. Magic washes over them that seems to interfere with their own magic. The Warden then turns and walks away.
A Warden or Watcher seems to come through the cells once per day. The third Warden that comes by is wearing armor that is a bit different. It’s more ornate, and she has a mantle of glowing blades behind her head that frames her long, deep purple ponytail.
She makes her presence quite known, and she speaks in a serious, raspy voice.
Night Elf Warden says: Well well well. So this… is the son of the Traveler.
She stops a few feet away from the intersection of the bars, and she looks in at Uther. Uther waves politely.
Night Elf Warden says: Uther is your name, correct?
Uther Menethil says: You have the right of it. Is there something I can do for you?
The woman steps closer and puts a gauntlet hand around one of the bars. She glares down at him.
Night Elf Warden says: I just wanted to get a look at you in person.
Uther Menethil says: Am I so interesting?
Night Elf Warden says: Hmph. Don’t give yourself that much credit, human, but your grandsire has caused us no small amount of struggle. Do you know how many of my sisters him and his crew were responsible for injuring? For slaying?
Uther Menethil says: I can make certain it does not happen again.
Night Elf Warden says: Yes, I’m sure you would.
Uther Menethil says: The offer is on the table.
Night Elf Warden says: We’ll have to see about that. If Tyrande has her way, perhaps. I would sooner see you rot in prison for the rest of your life.
Uther Menethil says: Without knowing anything about me? That hardly seems fair.
The Warden’s gauntlet tightens.
Night Elf Warden says: Was it fair when the good captain slew my sisters? When the demons he set free slaughtered them? You have no idea how many families have been disrupted. How many sisters have had to lay their brethren to a final rest.
Uther Menethil says: I never understand the people that choose to believe only their side of a conflict experiences loss.
Maeiv scowls.
Night Elf Warden says: Tch.
She turns away.
Night Elf Warden says: Don’t speak to me of loss, boy.
Uther Menethil says: Are you the only one who’s felt it? The only person in the history of our world to have lost something?
Night Elf Warden says: I would suggest you hold your tongue. I did not come here to be patronized by you.
Uther Menethil says: I apologize, it seems I hit a nerve. It wasn’t my intention.
The Warden then looks over at Tol’vas.
Night Elf Warden says: I’m surprised you haven’t elected to drift off into a slumber yet.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I spent enough time asleep.
Night Elf Warden says: I’m certain you have. I suppose that after this is over, it’ll be up to Staghelm to see what happens with you, won’t it? I’m sure this is a vacation compared to what he may do.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Do you personally harass all your prisoners or just the ones you think are important?
Night Elf Warden says: Just the ones that pique my curiosity. Your cells are in order, and you haven’t killed yourselves. That’s all I’m here to check on.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: No, I doubt you’d let us kill ourselves.
There is a glint in the woman’s eye and she turns away.
Night Elf Warden says: By Tyrande’s decree you are not chained to the wall. Give anyone else that tongue, and I may need to supersede that order.
She walks away. After a bit, Uther speaks up.
Uther Menethil says: I don’t think she likes us much.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I don’t think she likes anyone.
They are pretty sure the woman was Maiev, going by Jarod’s description.
After a few more days, Tol’vas opts to just go to sleep.
As Seria and Elissa are led away, the Watcher directs them down another passage.
Curious Voice says: Hey, what are you guys in for?
Night Elf Watcher says: Silence, demon.
Her umbral crescent flares.
Curious Voice says: Hello to you too!
They continue on, and they are led to their own quartet of cell that the Watcher opens. They also get cells across from each other, the bars come down as the Watcher leaves.
Elissa Cross says: Guess we should get comfortable, huh?
Seria sighs heavily.
A few days go by, and Elissa starts asking Seria if there’s anything she wants her to paint. Elissa makes multiple things, and there are many paintings sprawled out around her cell as she just paints most of the time. Seria experiments with her wildshaping, and she at least realizes that Riff hadn’t been shunted out of his disguised form.
The fourth patrol that comes through seems to be Maiev--as had been the case with Tol’vas and Uther. She looks about, and then to Seria.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: So you’re a druid, aren’t you?
Seria says: Yes.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Interesting. I don’t know anything about druids, but I didn’t think any were trolls. Color me surprised. I’m curious, why do you travel with these… people? You must realize what they are, yes? What their people are responsible for? I know what their people have done to your people, so why are you with them?
Seria lifts up her foot.
Seria says: Not all troll.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Hmph. I see. You could have fooled me. But, I’m not sure that answers my question. You’re only in here because you were traveling with them, but their crimes aren’t yours. The draenei and her people have caused plenty of suffering, and the humans have caused more trouble down here than much us. But search as I might, I don’t have any quarrel with you. You’ve been traveling with them. You must have seen something. You must know more than what I do. I could probably get you out of here, you know. You don’t need to take the fall for whatever it is that Remnii is trying to accomplish. Or pull on my people. You don’t need to be a part of that. You have to have seen something. Something about the true nature of her purpose.
Seria says: I’ve only seen her help people.
Maiev sighs.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: So be it. Better hope that kindness can see you out of this cage. If not you’ll suffer the same consequences that they do.
She then looks at Elissa.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: You. You bear the same insignia as the princeling. The child of the Traveler.
Elissa Cross says: Yes ma’am.
Elissa is sitting up, looking at Seria. Maiev makes a sound of disgust.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: I have nothing to say to you. Did you make all of these?
She looks at the paintings.
Elissa Cross says: Yes.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Hmph. You’re quite talented.
Elissa Cross says: Thanks!
Elissa blushes, and Maiev turns to leave.
Elissa Cross says: I can make one for you if you--
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: No.
She continues walking out of the passage, and the pair hear chuckling from down the hall.
Curious Voice says: Man. She really does not like you.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: SILENCE.
Curious Voice says: Oh, okay, ow, ow, listening…
Elissa looks over at Seria and smiles.
Elissa Cross says: Thanks for sticking up for everybody. I know you didn’t have to.
Seria says: Didn’t do anything wrong.
Elissa smiles.
Elissa Cross says: We’re lucky to have a friend like you, Seria.
A few days later, Elissa gets Seria’s attention, and she reaches her arm through the cage bars with a piece of parchment. Seria reaches out and takes it, and she sees an adorable portrait of Riff.
Elissa Cross says: We’ll see him again soon, but now you can have a bit of him here with you! I can try to make some more if you want. Do you want some of the Echo Isles, or anyone else you care about?
She glances down at Seria’s necklace, but doesn’t say anything.
Elissa Cross says: So it won’t be quite as lonely here.
Seria says: You can do whatever you want.
Elissa Cross says: Okay.
She spends some time asking Seria about her mom, and Elissa shares stories of her dad and what vague memories she has of her own mom.
Remnii and Vel are also led down a narrow passage, but one of the Watchers stops Remnii.
Night Elf Watcher says: You’ll be staying here.
Remnii looks back at Vel for a moment, but then steps in.
Vel is pushed further down to a quartet of cells that are all unoccupied. She picks one and starts to set up her things on the desk.
In Remnii’s cell, she wryly remembers that the Vitiator was more comfortable than this. But she sits, and opts to spend a lot of time in prayer.
Vel spends time poking around her chamber over the next few days, and she looks at the desk closer. She finds something carved into the side. She looks, and she sees something written in draenic. She copies it, and she’s not an expert, but it seems to be instructions of a sort--like schematics of some sort.
She hears the sounds of talking down the way, and she pulls herself out to look down the hall.
It seems Maiev had appeared at Remnii’s cell.
Inside the cell, Remnii is sitting on her bedroll. She opens her eyes and inclines her head.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: So you must be Remnii, then.
Remnii says: Yes.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: I’ve been looking forward to this conversation. I heard about your meeting with the High Priestess. About your claims. How convenient you would talk about a secret organization of your own people. You have intimate knowledge, I noticed, and for your sake, that better just be a coincidence.
Remnii considers for a moment.
Remnii says: I’ve witnessed first-hand what the fracturing of a people will do.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: I’m sure you have. And I won’t let you do the same to my people. I want you to know something.
She jabs her clawed gauntlet into the bar and drags it scraping down the side.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: I don’t care what spells you’ve used on my brother to get him out of his exile, or what you convinced Tyrande of, I will never forgive your people for what they did to mine. Mark my words, and pray your charms work on Tyrande. Because if not, your fate will be in my hands, and I’ll make sure you never see the light of day again.
Remnii can tell there is a great deal of pain where Maiev is talking from, and thus she remains silent as Maiev turns and heads further down to Vel’s cell. She looks around the cells, and then her eyes fall on Vel.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: I suppose it’s good that my sisters gave you writing implements. You may have saw fit to start carving your highborne equations into the wall as some of the others did. I suppose you have my gratitude.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I don’t make it a habit of damaging property.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: You may be the only highborne that shares that regard. We’ll see how true that is.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m endeavoring to not cause any trouble.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Good. Your people have caused enough as it is.
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...perhaps I’m splitting hairs, but I’m several millenia removed from those who lived here.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Yes, I suppose you are, and yet still the responsibility of the Legion’s return falls on you and your people, if what I have heard is true. You may have gotten shorter and… pinker, but some things never change. I shouldn’t be surprised it falls to us to clean up your messes once again.
Vel’s ears go back slightly, and her tone becomes slightly clipped.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I would be doing a lot more to work on that, but there’s not really much I can do here.
Maiev smirks.
Warden Maiev Shadowsong says: Yes, I suppose there isn’t.
She turns and strides away, turning only to glare at Remnii briefly through the small window as she passes before she disappears.
As the days go on, though the cell’s magic makes it so Vel doesn’t need to eat, it doesn’t remove the desire to feed. One week passes. Then a second week. Then 18 days. The Hunger is getting bad.
Tol’vas spends his time lucid dreaming. One of the dreams he had was vibrant, running under twin moons--both full--and a massive white shape runs beside him. It’s Goldrinn. But then the dream gets more hazy, as he had slept through a full moon.
Seria spends a good deal of time meditating and bonding with Elissa.
Uther is wrangling the fact his mother was a time-traveling war hero.
After nearly two weeks in the cell, Vel opts to finally read the final entry in her mother’s spellbook. The handwriting had started to deteriorate in quality the further back she had read, and there had always been a degree of apprehension about turning that final page.
The hex's grip on my vitality has gotten worse and worse. I can hardly rest without suffering. It's all I can do right to hold this quill.
I will be brief. Lirath has mixed a medicine that will allow me to pass peacefully. The suffering can finally end. The pain can finally end.
I am so sorry, my darlings. I would give anything to end this any other way... but I was not strong enough to conquer it. To banish this hex.
If you ever read this, my little Moonbeam, I am sorry for letting you down. I hope you can forgive me for being too weak to live long enough to see you grow into the woman I know you were meant to be.
Don't be afraid to laugh, my Vela. Don't be afraid to cry. Don't be afraid to sing. I will be with you through every note, and in every breath.
~Starlight
As the shock and finality of the final entry settles in, Vel starts to cry. Her bloody tears splatter onto the pages, but as they touch the paper--they evaporate, the stain going with it. She knew it was an enduring spellbook, but that reaction was different. There was something more to it.
She runs a finger over where the tears had fallen, and there’s a familiar, magical spark. She puts her full hand on the page, and she feels the same sensation, but it seems to be diminishing now.
She’s still in some amount of shock, her eyes searching the passage for some sort of answer, but upon reading the final paragraph again and again, she tries to sing the lullaby her mother had always used to. The pages start to lift slightly, like they were blown by a wind--as if reacting to her voice.
Remnii hears her from down the hall. Vel has a beautiful singing voice, but it’s strained, and interrupted with sobs. Remnii cracks her eyes open, listening.
Eventually, the pages start to die down as well. And then Vel’s voice cracks, the sound causing a small rise of incredulous, stressed laughter to rise from her throat at the situation she had found herself in.
Remnii says: ...Are you okay, Vel?
Remnii’s voice calls down the hall, and Vel starts to respond, but is immediately distracted as the pages of the book flap and spark, and the words begin to glow. And then the magic fades. There are words that are strange and blurred--the formerly blank pages also filled with flickering text. Vel touches the pages, and they feel normal, but the words are so hard to read--as if they are being looked at from the wrong perspective.
She continues to examine the book, going through typical cypher techniques, until finally she flips the book upside down. The words aren’t difficult to read anymore, but they are not in Nirenn’s handwriting anymore--the writing is stern and firm, and written in Thalassian. It seems to be speaking of some sort of curse or disease.
Vel closes the book and opens it, and she realizes the back is now the front, and there is a title: The Arcanist’s Guide to Rare Diseases, penned by Ariella Silverwood. She starts to thumb through it, and she reads a forward that speaks of a woman--a high ranking member of the Kirin Tor and a companion member of the Council of Tirisfal. She seems to be an expert on diseases and curses, and there are notations made by her mother’s handwriting throughout the entire thing.
There is a lot of information. On diseases. On curses. On the healing properties of the Sunwell. This copy was likely the one that was supposed to be in Dalaran--there is a Kirin Tor eye on it, and the most recent marking was over 60-70 years ago, but her mother’s name is not on it.
About an hour later, Remnii calls down to Vel again, and Vel responds, but she seems very disjointed and unfocused.
Remnii had spent a lot of time praying to the Naaru, trying to find a way to bring Asha’lah back to Tyrande. Then she finds guidance.
The chance to bring back Asha’lah had not failed, because resurrection had never actually failed her.
A bit over a week later, Remnii looks for guidance on the elves that had started to die unexplained. As she fades into unconsciousness, she finds herself in a place far from where she is, in a place full of draenei. The details are hard to see. About a dozen of them are standing around, and one old, deceased draenei is laying out in the draenic equivalent of a casket.
She recognizes three faces in the back: Exarch Maladar, the former leader of the Auchenai, but he is very young. He gives a sermon, and he appears to be an acolyte in the vision. Velen is also there, also young. And there is another older draenei there--Velen’s mentor. Velen is listening closely as he watches the auchenai help the families grieve.
Something clicks as Remnii’s eyes open. The night elves were dying of natural causes.
Remnii sits with that information for a while.
July 27th
Vel had started to get good at predicting the Wardens’ patrols, but one day she hears a voice grossly outside the pattern she had started to recognize.
Remnii hadn’t heard them as they approached, but a voice had snapped Remnii’s focus to them. There is a soft, but stern voice.
Hushed Voice says: Remnii.
Remnii sees no one as she looks around.
Remnii says: Hello?
Hushed Voice says: It is you then. Good.
Something flickers in front of Remnii, and two hands appears as invisibility drops from the individual. It’s a short night elf woman. She pulls her hood off, and her entire body appears. She has bright golden eyes, and silvery hair, with pinkish skin and reddish purple markings beneath her eyes.
Night Elven Woman says: I’m glad I found you. We don’t have much time.
There is a hum, and the stone wall in front of Remnii opens.
Night Elven Woman says: I’ve already released the majority of your friends. We only have a short amount of time before they come for you. Come.
She gestures for Remnii to follow and starts to head in Vel’s direction. Remnii stops at the door.
Remnii says: Pardon if I feel as if this is damned if I do, or damned if I do not…
The woman looks back to Remnii.
Night Elven Woman says: I understand you have questions, but know your life is in danger, and Tyrande is not coming. She sent the kill order. You need to come with me.
She places a necklace in Remnii’s hands.
Night Elven Woman says: You’re familiar with the Holy Light of the Eastern Kingdoms?
Remnii notes the symbol.
Night Elven Woman says: A memento from my time abroad.
She continues down to Vel.
Night Elven Woman says: I trust you heard me.
Vel nods.
Night Elven Woman says: Gather your things.
She holds the warden crest up and the bars open. Vel does her best to focus on her belongings, gathering them up quickly--and leaving the Watchers’ quill behind--before she exits the cell.
Night Elven Woman says: Are either of you able to conceal your presence?
Velameestra Windrunner says: ...illusions, but not invisibility right now.
Remnii shakes her head.
Night Elven Woman says: Stick close to me, and if anyone walks by, don’t say a thing.
She reaches out and puts her hands on Remnii and Vel’s shoulders as she casts an [Invisibility] spell, but notably, Vel doesn’t sense any sort of blood flow. It’s like she isn’t physically there. She then turns and starts to power walk out of the corridor.
They hear soldiers running, and they see Watchers running by, but the woman guides them out of the way of the Watchers.
A figure also approaches Tol’vas and Uther in a similar situation.
Night Elven Woman says: Your name is Uther Menethil?
Uther Menethil says: It is. Who am I speaking with?
Night Elven Woman says: I will make introductions later, but you need to be reunited with your companions. Time is short, and you need to be reunited with your companions.
She shows her warden crest, and the bars open.
Uther Menethil says: Ordinarily I would like to leave prison, but we did enter in a show of good faith…
Night Elven Woman says: I will explain later. You and Remnii’s life are in danger. I need to get you to your friends.
Uther can tell the woman is quite practiced at concealing her presence, but she doesn’t seem to mean him any harm whatsoever.
Uther Menethil says: Where do you plan to take us?
Night Elven Woman says: To the cells of your companions.
Uther Menethil says: And after that?
Night Elven Woman says: After that, you’ll be on your own. I must attend to other things. We don’t have time to discuss, please follow me. We cannot be late.
She reaches forward and casts [Invisibility] on Uther and Tol’vas.
Night Elven Woman says: Stay close to me, and don’t say anything if patrols go by.
Uther Menethil says: On whose orders are you acting?
She looks at Tol’vas.
Night Elven Woman says: A mutual friend.
Tol’vas looks at her blankly, and the woman rolls her eyes in frustration. She starts to move, and when they don’t follow, she turns back again.
Night Elven Woman says: I’m going to the cell that belongs to my daughter. You can follow if you wish, or stay here, but I cannot guarantee your safety. Please. Follow me. Velameestra and Remnii are already safely in my custody. They will meet you there.
Tol’vas looks at the now invisible Uther.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Would Velameestra be stupid enough to just follow a stranger?
Uther Menethil says: Not normally, but I’m not sure what her containment has done to her.
There is a long pause before something suddenly clicks for Tol’vas.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That’s Elissa’s mother.
They immediately run to follow. A Warden and a small contingent of Watchers stops in front of her.
Night Elf Warden says: Sister Starbreeze.
Morra Starbreeze says: Yes, I know. I’m going to ensure the rest of the prisoners haven’t gotten free.
Night Elf Warden says: Thank you sister!
The Warden runs by with the Watchers and Morra looks back.
Morra Starbreeze says: I hoped the two of you would follow. Be silent.
Before long, walking in the opposite direction, they see another figure. It’s the same woman that is leading them, and Remnii and Vel see the same as they approach. Without missing a beat, the two Morras step into each other and turn down the hallway towards the alcove where they meet.
Remnii bumps into Tol’vas, and he hears the eep of Remnii. Vel is bumped into by Uther, his chest dangerously close to her ear. Immediately, Vel shoves him away from her and runs down the corridor as she clamps her mouth shut, followed by the others.
A figure steps before Seria.
Morra Starbreeze says: That should be the rest of you.
She holds up the Warden crest, and Elissa and Seria’s cells are open. And with another wave, the invisibility all fades.
Morra Starbreeze says: There. Now that you’re all here, I can explain.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Where are the others?
Morra Starbreeze says: They are safe, and together when I set them upon their own task. Your lives are all in danger.
She looks at Remnii.
Morra Starbreeze says: Do you have the ability to read thoughts… it matters not.
She weaves some magic over her head and whispers a few words in darnassian, and pulls out luminous strands of moonlit energy. It’s the [Encode Thoughts] spell. She hands it to Remnii.
Morra Starbreeze says: When you get the chance to get to safety, this memory will show you everything I saw. I have no proof I have not modified the memory, but I am not telling you lies or deception. The scouting group that went to meet with your people and your father has been slain. No survivors were found, and that includes Jarod Shadowsong.
Remnii falters.
Morra Starbreeze says: Additional parties have been sent out to recover more, but bodies on both sides were found--draenei and night elves. Jarod’s body was not among them. I urge you to contact him, if he is alive, perhaps he can tell you more. I know this only from secondhand information. I intercepted a message--the contents of the memory strand. Evidence is pointing towards your people being responsible. I can only operate from what I know, but had that messenger reached Maiev, Remnii, you and Uther would have been slain. I cannot speak to the rest. The rest of your companions have been told the same. I have sent them to rendezvous with you outside. The one called Samaara informed me to tell you that she would see you again amongst your people. I recommend you make the same goal. But before that, I was able to give them a warden stone, one I am now bequeathing you.
She hands it to Vel.
Morra Starbreeze says: This would allow you to access most areas in the prison. I recommend you do so discreetly and quickly. I imagine your companions are springing the rest of the draenei within. I entrusted them with that goal, and you to your own. I understand you are seeking another prisoner. The one called Medivh.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Where is he at?
Morra Starbreeze says: He’s in the higher security prisoners. That key will be able to release him from his bonds, but it will be well guarded. I recommend you rearm yourselves and be discrete until you find him. This may be the only opportunity you have to break in. After Maiev tightens security, penetrating these depths will be nigh impossible--even for someone that knows it. And there is something else I would suggest, as drastic as it sounds. This warden stone can access any but Illidan Stormrage--the man deepest in the prisoners. I want you to free him--
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: What!?
Morra Starbreeze says: I understand, but if the Legion has returned, there are few others that will be able to combat them, and in the absence of the archdruid… we have little choice.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: So we go for the one that betrayed the archdruid!?
Morra Starbreeze says: You will get no succor from Tyrande. Perhaps he can speak sense to her. You can do what you wish, I am not your master, but without his aid, I fear for the future of your people.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: What makes you think he would help us?
Morra Starbreeze says: By all rights, he shouldn’t. If I were him, I would hate us. But he would hate the demons more. You should know this. If the Legion is behind this… we will need all the help we can get to combat it, and none know how to combat the Legion better than Illidan Stormrage. Time is short. You cannot linger. I must obfuscate my involvement, but this is not the last time we will speak.
Tol’vas looks at Elissa.
To'vas Moonshadow says: I hope not.
Morra looks at her as well, making eye contact. The woman’s cool exterior splinters slightly.
Elissa Cross says: ...mom?
The word pierces Morra’s heart, and the smallest smile comes to her mouth.
Morra Starbreeze says: I have a great deal to discuss with you, and I promise I will do so. Until then---
She reaches down and pulls the strap on the hilt of the longsword at her hip, and she gives the sword to Elissa as she brushes hair from Elissa’s face.
Morra Starbreeze says: Until then… let Starflower watch over you.
It’s a beautiful longsword with an intricate and ancient design.
Morra Starbreeze says: I must go. At the very least, make it out of here alive. I care not what you choose to do. Please live to fight another day.
Velameestra Windrunner says: This place, we can teleport if we’re not in cells?
Morra Starbreeze says: Correct.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Good.
Morra Starbreeze says: I trust you will be able to track your companions to the rest of the draenei. From there, it’s in Elune’s hands.
Morra turns away and starts to hurry away. She turns one last time, and her eyes linger on Elissa for a moment, before she pulls her hood up and disappears.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. First thing’s first, we need to get our things and we need to go.
Elissa is white-knuckling her mother’s sword and is seemingly trying really hard not to cry.
Remnii quickly uses [Encode Thoughts] as people start to move, and she sees Morra with a night elf sentinel. The Sentinel’s eyes are glazed over, and Morra has a hand on the other woman’s forehead. From her perspective, she can hear Tyrande’s voice.
Memory of High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind says: So they all were killed? Every last one? Even Jarod Shadowsong?
Memory of Night Elf Sentinel says: We did not find evidence of his passing. Only signs of a battle and many bodies. We tried to recover as many as we could, but there is no sign of Jarod.
Memory of High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind says: ...No. That can’t be.., If Jarod was not there… where else could he have gone? Were there any signs?
Memory of Night Elf Sentinel says: There were tracks, but it was hard to tell who or what they were. The rest of the patrol was slain.
There is silence.
Memory of High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind says: ...then we have to assume that if Jarod was not slain, then he was compromised. Send word to Maiev. Have her execute Remnii as well as the Traveler’s son, and bring the rest to me. We’ll get to the truth of this matter yet.
The vision pulls out.
Memory of Morra Starbreeze says: You were successful in delivering your message. There’s no need to send word to the High Priestess. Continue about your duties.
The Sentinel blinks.
Memory of Night Elf Sentinel says: What happened?
Memory of Morra Starbreeze says: You alright? I found you ambushed.
And the memory ends as the rest of the group starts to run, and they hear a voice.
Curious Voice says: Hey. All of you guys. Sorry, it’s kind of rude to eavesdrop, but something’s going on, and I think I can help you.
Remnii stops and looks in the small window. She sees a woman chained to the wall with her arms up. She is mostly nude save for some hempen trousers. The only piece of clothing she’s wearing over her breasts is a thin band of jet-black leather. She’s a night elf, and there are tattoos all over her skin. She looks tired, and in pain.
Imprisoned Night Elf Woman says: Did that priestess mention you were going to bust out Illidan?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That wasn’t decided.
Imprisoned Night Elf Woman says: Right. Right. Well, I know where he’s at. I was in here trying to bust him out.
Remnii says: Are you Illidari?
The woman looks surprised.
Imprisoned Night Elf Woman says: You’ve heard of us?
Remnii says: I know one of you.
Imprisoned Night Elf Woman says: Yeah! The name’s Kor'vas! Kor'vas Bloodthorn.
Remnii says: Allies come in strange places. We need to get her out.
Vel uses the warden stone, and the wall recedes, as do the chains.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: Oh man!
She stands up and does some stretches.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: I really owe you guys one, thanks a lot. I got deep into this place, I can get you to where you’re trying to go as long as you can help me, I can get to the Betrayer. Our stuff should be in the same wing. Unless someone is really good at lying, we might have a bit of fun. We’re not going to kill anyone. They’re my people too.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m sure you think that way.
Kor’vas rolls her eyes and starts to bicker back.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We don’t have time for this!
There is an edge of a snarl to her voice.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: Right. Lets get our stuff.
Vel casts [Seeming], placing disguises of night elf Watchers over all of them. Right now, the prisons are quiet, but they know it won’t last, and they start to head out.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: If you need cover, we can let out some other prisoners. They may be a good distraction. Just a thought. The wing should be in this direction.
Vel takes the lead, opting to try a guided rush given the rest of the Watchers are mobilizing. They take a brief moment and Tol’vas uses [Conjure Fey]. There is a quiet burst of flower petals and dust, revealing a small, furry creature with wide moth wings on its back.
Moth Fairy Creature says [sylvan]: I heard you said you needed a distraction!
Tol’vas smiles.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Yeah, go crazy.
Moth Fairy Creature says [sylvan]: Lets have a little fun, shall we?
She claps her hands together and flies off in an opposite direction. She points at some roots with a chuckle, causing a bunch of flowers to grow and start walking around and causing chaos.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: Should be this way, come on.
A few patrols halt the group, but they are able to deflect well enough. They make it to the wing where they could find their items.
Kor'vas Bloodthorn says: This should be it. Play it cool.
There are a few Sentinels and Watchers equipping themselves, and one is of a higher rank.
Night Elf Watcher says [darnassian]: Fan out and make sure they don’t escape the compound. Get the ones in this wing locked down.
The Overseer then looks to the group.
Night Elf Watcher Overseer says [darnassian]: Equip yourselves and move. The eastern wing has been compromised.
The group seems to comply, and they quickly note that this is--in fact--where their gear is. Remnii sees her staff, and she catches sight of another thing: another draenic staff. It’s Velen’s staff.
Another Watcher comes running in.
Night Elf Watcher says [darnassian]: The other prisoners in this ward have escaped. The ones sent by Tyrande. The demon and the others.
Night Elf Watcher Overseer says [darnassian]: We need to find them immediately.
She squints at the group abruptly.
Night Elf Watcher Overseer says [darnassian]: I don’t recognize you. Are you from this ward?
