Nirenn Windrunner, born Nirenn Silverwood, was a high elven mage and an only child that became part of the expansive Windrunner family after she married the youngest Windrunner brother, Lirath. She was a talented mage, and was being groomed to replace her mentor, Kilnar Goldensword as the Seeker of Wisdom in the Magistrate of Silvermoon.

Appearance

Original by Fantasy Flight Games

Nirenn was a beautiful woman that represented a great deal of the ethereal elegance that is typically associated with the high elves. She had sharp features that were framed by silky, white hair that she frequently kept loose, and bright blue eyes. It has been said her daughter, Velameestra, resembles her a great deal, though the young mage had inherited the golden hair of the Windrunners.

Personality

Nirenn genuinely cared for her children and threw as much as her self as she could into raising them after the conclusion of the Second Troll Wars. While she was well-aware of the fact she had limited time due to the nature of the hex she took while fighting in the Second Troll Wars, she tried her hardest to not allow it to slow her down until very close to the end of her life.

While she loved both Velameestra and Gilveradin deeply, she spent a great deal of time attempting to nurture Velameestra's love of the arcane and ensure that she was prepared to continue along a safe path in her studies if she decided to continue pursuing them after she was gone. Like her daughter, she was considered to be exceptionally intelligent, though she was also incredibly compassionate—a trait that was exemplified in her son.

She and Lirath loved each other very much, and while their marriage was short, it was considered to be a very strong one.

Biography

Nirenn was trained as a mage by the accomplished magistrix, Kilnar Goldensword. She reached the rank of arcanist in the Magistrate of Silvermoon at a fairly young age, and was considered to be well on her way to achieving the rank of magister in a relatively short time frame. Her history before she met Lirath is largely unknown. She had stated that both her parents had died when she was a young adult, but she never explained the nature of the death and was never pushed to do so as the memory clearly caused her a great deal of pain.

The Second Troll Wars

Nirenn participated in the defense of Quel'Thalas during the Second Troll Wars even though her children were only one at the time. She actively fought at her husband's side, and ultimately succeeded in killing the troll witch doctor Zalazane. Unfortunately, she did not manage to do so before she intercepted a hex that had been meant for her husband.

Death

Nirenn ultimately died after several years of slowly wasting away from illness caused by the hex she had taken during the Second Troll Wars. Due to the extreme pain she was constantly in, and the inevitability of her death, she asked her husband to aid her in passing on through her own means. She willingly took a concoction known as "Soundless Sleep," which was derived from the highly poisonous hemlock, so that she could pass on in peace instead of being claimed by the pain of the hex.

Undeath

Nirenn was raised as a banshee by Zalazane, and she was fought by Uther's party in a cemetery a few days to the north of Last Crossing. Her engagement ring was found at the core of her banshee after it was defeated. It was found, however, that her grave in Windrunner Village had not been disturbed, thus it is unknown how she was raised and how her engagement ring was retrieved. On observation from a local arcanist, it was confirmed that the enchanted ring was not present in her grave.

She continued to reappear several times in nightmares sent by Zalazane to plague her daughter.

After Zalazane's final death, when the archmage Kel'Thuzad intervened to seal away the hex that had, in turn, attached itself to Nirenn's daughter, it was discovered that the hex itself had consumed Nirenn's soul, and that even in undeath she was trapped within the hex. If the hex were to be destroyed, her soul would likely be destroyed with it.
