August 2nd

The group continues to head towards the enclave of the Darkspear, and they note some small tribes of forest and ice trolls along the way–each with their own unique standards and totems of tribal affiliation. There are mostly semi-permanent homes made of wood and stone, and they are similar in construction to those in the Echo Isles.

Vel tries to keep an eye out, but between the blinding sunlight and otherwise, she doesn’t see anything of note other than a few glances. Zar’Kaa motions for the group to huddle up.

Zar'Kaa says: Right. So. Before we do this… should I be aimin’ ta keep yer appearances in line with yer identities?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Zulfli… knows Uther and myself. We have a positive relationship since the last time we spoke. Though we shouldn’t be publicizing that at large.
Rai says: I should be able to get my sista’s attention.
Zar'Kaa says: Right. It’s more just me bein’ one of the ones takin’ up ‘er time.

Rai winces.

Zar'Kaa says: I’ll let you take the lead on that, Rai.

He slaps Rai on the back, and Rai stumbles a bit forward.

They pass by a few other minor troll groups and tribes. The Darkspear tribe enclave is not the largest, nor the smallest. Rai opts to go ahead to try and get a meeting with his sister. Tol’vas looks at Seria.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Is there anything you can tell me about that wolf loa?

Seria knows a bit. Namely, from what she can tell, the name Zumaata was likely another name for Goldrinn, and Xolotal is likely a lesser wolf loa connected to him somehow–which Seria relays to him.

Tol’vas nods.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Alright. I’ll see you all in the Echo isles.

He then changes from a wolf into a bird and flies off.

Velameestra Windrunner says: …wait, what?

Vel watches the bird go, quite stunned and caught off-guard. Remnii also watches Tol’vas fly off. Uther looks at Vel.

Uther Menethil says: I believe he said he would meet us at the Echo Isles!

Zar’Kaa points after Tol’vas.

Zar'Kaa says: Does… he do that often?
Uther Menethil says: Not that exact thing, but that’s not especially atypical behavior.
Zar'Kaa says: Hmm… eccentric he be.

A young gurubashi troll had dropped a toy they were playing with and points after Tol’vas flying away. Vel rubs a hand down her face in exasperation.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Well… he’ll find his own way back.

After a bit, Rai comes to the edge of the enclave and waves the group in. The two headhunters on watch seemed to recognize Zar’Kaa, and on Rai’s assurance they lax their stance and allow the group to enter. Zar’Kaa gives them a respectful nod each.

Rai smiles.

Rai says: She said that she be willin’ ta meet with ya. I think she knows yer already here, Zar’Kaa. I don’t know how–
Velameestra Windrunner says: It may have been the loud proclamations of ‘I am Zar’Kaa of the Darkspear tribe’.
Rai says: …That may have been it. But, she be in the meetin’ chambers. Um. Where’d the wolf go?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I… believe he’s looking into business with his wolf loa.
Rai says: Oh! Um…
Zar'Kaa says: Needless to say he will not be joining us.
Rai says: Ah. I was going to ask how he was going to get to Xolatal himself, but you all can walk through trees. So I guess that’s
Zar'Kaa says: Well I suppose when you can just grow wings like that one can…
Velameestra Windrunner says: He’s a druid.
Zar'Kaa says: Anyway. Lead on, Rai.

There are some similarities between this village and the ones on the Echo Isle. Some second glances are cast at Seria and Zar’Kaa, especially because Seria looks a bit like her mother at the moment. They arrive at a larger meeting hall, and the two warriors at the entrance nod in acknowledgement. They see a few other lead hunters make their way out of the chamber inside, seemingly having had some sort of meeting–one of them smells of alcohol as he drinks from a gourd, and there is the wafting of smoke–indicating the meeting may have been more casual.

Through the faint layer of smoke, they see an open fire in a controlled pit at the center accompanied by the scent of a finished meal. Master Gadrin, an old balding troll, is sitting nearby with his mask at his side–the mask being the item that Uther and Vel recognize more so than his face. Two of his apprentices are nearby, cleaning up the meal. Nearby, Zulfli’jin is cleansing her hands–a woman that Vel and Uther hadn’t seen in a little over a year. Her crimson hair is braided and locked together in intricate but un-encumbering war braids, and her mask is also off and reverently placed on some furniture next to Vol’jin’s glaive.

Her eyes flicker over, and she immediately clocks the unfamiliar individuals with Rai. Her eyes then linger on Zar’Kaa, and she plants her waterskin to her side.

Zulfli'jin says: When I got a message from the Gurubashi Embassy sayin’ a member of my tribe was causin’ problems, I didn’t know what to expect. Imagine my surprise when your name be the one they mention. Now where do you get off claimin’ you be a member of the Darkspear tribe after leavin’ so long ago?

Zar’Kaa had kneeled down and put his fist over his heart in respect.

Zar'Kaa says: The Darkspear always have been a part of me, as they are now, Chieftain Zulfli’jin. So it was that I identified myself, when I was makin’ my inquiry.

Zulfli grins.

Zulfli'jin says: Yet you be here, and not the old man. Ya words have been heard, Zar’Kaa, but the truth of them remains ta be seen.

She then looks to the rest of the group.

Zulfli'jin says: So who are yer friends that ya be bringin’ before me? And what do they want?
Zar'Kaa says: I’ll let them introduce themselves first. Then we can discuss our business.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s been a long time, Zulfli’jin. My name is Vel. I look a bit different from the last time we spoke.

Zulfli’jin squints, and then stands up with a grin.

Zulfli'jin says: Ya don’t say. You are a long way from home, don’t ya think?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Quite far.
Zulfli'jin says: I assume the rest of you are the companions you were traveling with.
Velameestra Windrunner says: One of them.

She points to Uther.

Velameestra Windrunner says: The others are allies we’ve picked up along the way.

Uther waves. Zulfli’jin nods.

Remnii says: My name is Remnii, it is good to meet you.
Zulfli'jin says: The pleasure be mine. Your friends here did a good service to my people once. Ya be welcome here for what ya need. I don’t know how much my people can aid ya, but I be here, and I be listening.

Her eyes fall on Seria, who shifts back to her true form. Zulfli’s eyes widen.

Zulfli'jin says: Seria…

Her eyes flicker to Rai, and then back to Seria.

Zulfli'jin says: I didn’t know you were still alive. Though I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised, given the type of person your mother was.
Seria says: She taught me well.

Zulfli nods.

Zulfli'jin says: I wager she has.

She looks at Vel and Uther again.

Zulfli'jin says: Ya be travelin’ with them now?

Seria nods, and Zulfli nods back.

Zulfli'jin says: They be good people. For not bein’ members of the Darkspear, of course.

She grins.

Velameestra Windrunner says: High praise.

Zulfli looks at Rai.

Zulfli'jin says: Is this what you’ve been keepin’ from me the last few moons?
Rai says: It is… I didn’t know how to broach it.
Zulfli'jin says: Huh. Ya really thought this would be harder to speak about than the girl ya be spendin’ your time with?

Rai blushes, and Zulfli smirks.

Zulfli'jin says: I won’t waste your time, Seria, with apologies. After the way I treated ya after everythin’ that happened… I didn’t make things any easier than they shoulda been. But it be good to see you are still kickin’. Ya deserve to be, one way or the other. Shame ya didn’t show up a few moments ago! We just finished our meal. Otherwise I would have shared.

Gadrin chuckles.

Gadrin says: There still could be somethin’ I could whip up.
Zulfli'jin says: No need, Master Gadrin. But thank you.

Zar’Kaa also acknowledges Master Gadrin with a nod.

Zar'Kaa says: Been a long time, old timer. Glad to see ya be doin’ well.
Gadrin says: The loa have a way to ensure I stay kickin’ until there be no need. But I be glad to see ya again. I got all me medicines to thank for that.
Zar'Kaa says: As do I. I’ve gotten better since I last saw ya.

Gadrin’s eyes crinkle fondly.

Zulfli'jin says: So now that we be all acquainted with friends old and new, what brings ya here?
Zar'Kaa says: Right. Well. It appears that all these people and us have a common enemy. Chieftain. Zalazane walks among us again. His spirit, anyway.

Zulfli looks at Vel.

Zulfli'jin says: Is this true?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s true. We haven’t seen him, but we are here seeking a way to track him down so we can send him back to where he belongs.
Seria says: Bwonsamdi came to me.
Zulfli'jin says: To you? Seems I’ve been left out of the loop. I’ll have to remind Bwonsamdi I don’t appreciate such things. So that bastard is back.
Zar'Kaa says: He is. It took Boss Rokhan and I a long time, but after some time, we think we may have an answer to how we may get at him. We have a ritual–one we will perform. By goin’ through it, we should be able to find him and send him back and make sure he stays there.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re using the Hungering Hex as a bloodhound. We just need things to give it the scent.
Zulfli'jin says: I can see why that would help. So I presume there be somethin’ ya need from me for this ritual Rokhan wants ta accomplish?
Zar'Kaa says: Yes… one of the items we need is somethin’ that represents his mind. And that would be, at least that we could think of, your fatha’s glaive.

Zulfli’s eyes flicker to the glaive.

Zulfli'jin says: Is that so?
Zar'Kaa says: Yes, and to be clear, in terms of what we need, it be to activate the ritual. It wouldn’t harm the weapon. It be in the same state it be.
Uther Menethil says: In an abstract manner of speakin’, we’re actually using it to kill Zalazane.
Zar'Kaa says: This be true. Once the deed is done, I be makin’ sure it come back to you. I swear it on me life, chieftain.
Zulfli'jin says: This seems a bit convenient. Rokhan dredgin’ up somethin’ I can’t refuse. And it just happens to need the only thing I’ve got left of me fatha. The representation of his power. Of his legacy. What we’ve rebuilt in the 20 years after the war. After Zalazane’s war took all of this from us.

Zar’Kaa’s expression sinks.

Zulfli'jin says: I’m sure you might think he don’t got any ulterior motives. But then again, Zar’Kaa, ya be the kind that sees what be in front of him.

Zar’Kaa tugs at his dreadlocks.

Zulfli'jin says: How do I know this not be some opportunity be lookin’ to try and dismantle what I got here? To take what we’ve been building?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Do any of your people have a geas?
Zulfli'jin says: Why do you ask?
Velameestra Windrunner says: A geas can ensure that the glaive is returned safely. If it’s put on someone. Not without dramatic consequences.
Zar'Kaa says: Forgive me, Vel. Could you explain?
Velameestra Windrunner says: A geas is a powerful form of magic. Effectively a contract, a binding promise. As long as someone fulfills the nature of the geas, nothing occurs. If they go against it there will be negative consequences.
Zar'Kaa says: So, if I were to swear upon this geas, that the glaive would come back with me to you, chieftain, might this be sufficient?

Zulfli considers for a long moment.

Zulfli'jin says: If ya be willin’ to do that, Zar’Kaa, then… I not be against seein’ this through. Under two conditions.
Zar'Kaa says: Name them, chieftain.
Zulfli'jin says: First, I be comin’ with ya.

Zar’Kaa raises his eyebrow.

Zulfli'jin says: If Zalazane do be back, then I got as much right as anyone to be a part of his fall. And the last thing I plan ta do is let Rokhan get that revenge without me. And two, after this be done, and after Zalazane be dealt with for good, you be stayin’ with us. Not with Rokhan.

Zar’Kaa’s eyes widen.

Zar'Kaa says: Chieftain, ya know I want to return. That was the plan anyway when we finish this business and we achieve our goal, but… I don’t understand why this line be drawn in the sand?
Zulfli'jin says: Since ya left, I’ve had plenty of time to think about what’s goin’ on. I realize mistakes were made. I realize the Darkspear tribe… leadin’ it be a lot more complicated than I thought. But what I do know, is that our tribe not be recoverin’ from nothin’. If it be stayin’ split like it is. You said the Darkspear been a part of ya, ya claim ya be a Darkspear, what I be askin’ ya is for ya to rejoin us.
Zar'Kaa says: Of course, it’s just… there be more Darkspear out in the world than those here. There aren’t just a few. Back on the Echo Isles, there are plenty of them–not the numbers here, but sizeable. Hundreds.
Zulfli'jin says: Why do ya think I want to see it for myself?

Zar’Kaa nods and closes his eyes in acknowledgement.

Zar'Kaa says: But then what happens with Rokhan?
Zulfli'jin says: That depends on what Rokhan chooses to do, doesn’t it?
Zar'Kaa says: I can’t choose for him. Even if I wanted to. I can tell you this… over the past two years? I’ve gotten to know Rokhan quite well. He don’t want to take nothin’ from you, chieftain. He… he be regrettin’ his actions on that day as well. How things turned out. He don’t mean you no harm. I can vouch for that.

Zulfli offers a genuine, but close to piteous, smile.

Zulfli'jin says: I believe you think that, Zar’Kaa. But I think you have been speakin’ for Rokhan enough. I’ll let the bastard speak for himself, and then we see where we at at the end of this. But don’t worry, I don’t plan on startin’ anything. Not until Zalazane is dealt with. I be more than aware that Rokhan got experience that I don’t got. Whatever he be plannin’ to hunt down Zalazane, I don’t know if I could do it without him. But once this be done, well… I think it’s about time we pick up our conversation where we left it off so many years ago.
Zar'Kaa says: As long as it don’t come to blows. I don’t want that… though it don’t matter what I want for the Darkspear.
Zulfli'jin says: Do you agree to these terms then, Zar’Kaa?
Zar'Kaa says: Just one more question? If I may. Why do ya want me back? When I left with Rokhan, with Master Bru’kan and the others. You seemed almost relieved. Have ya changed your mind?

Zulfli chuckles.

Zulfli'jin says: If you’re gonna parade yourself around like a Darkspear, I think it may be smart for me to have some say in what ya be doin’. Call it… a vested interest. Or maybe damage control. Depends.

Vel chuffs.

Zar'Kaa says: Trouble seems to find me…
Zulfli'jin says: Seems ya be a magnet for it. Ever since ya be a little one.
Zar'Kaa says: True. Alright. I’ll do it.

Zulfli moves to her mask and claims it and the glaive. She spins the glaive in her hand, and then holds it behind herself. She then reaches out and places her middle finger on the center of Zar’Kaa’s forehead and begins the incantation for the geas spell. Tendrils of grave and shadowy magic start to weave around her fingers, and Zar’Kaa’s head. She indicates the term of the geas that Zar’Kaa had agreed to. He feels something on the tip of his tongue, and it stings–he tastes blood, but then it subsides.

Zulfli'jin says: It is done then. And I’ll be comin’ with ya, once ya return to these Echo Isles. I do have just one more question for ya.

She looks at the group.

Zulfli'jin says: Who the hell is the one that just slunk in behind you all a few minutes ago?

They turn and look at Yenniku, who had just entered.

Seria says: That be your half-brotha.

Zulfli pulls her mask off, showing an expression of completely perplexity.

Zulfli'jin says: Come again?
Zar'Kaa says: Well… before you was born… Vol’jin had another son that we gave to the Gurubashi. That be this one. His name is Yenniku.
Yenniku says: This came as much a surprise to me as it did to you, sista.

Zulfli looks at Zar’Kaa, Seria, Yenniku, and then Rai.

Zulfli'jin says: Is that so? What are you doin’ here then?

Yenniku shrugs.

Yenniku says: I know about as much as you do. I’m pretty sure they’ll be using me as a blood sacrifice to draw out Zalazane.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I expressly told you that’s not what we’re doing. The metaphorical nature of the ritual required a form of Zalazane’s body as well. Given his close ties with your father, Rohkan believed a first-born child would work for that purpose.

Zulfli moves past the group to Yenniku, who takes a step back. She stops, and then feints forward. Yenniku flinches, and Zulfli laughs.

Zulfli'jin says: Well I wouldn’t know if you and I shared blood, if ya didn’t remind me of my own brotha.

She walks away.

Yenniku says: What is that supposed to mean?
Zulfli'jin says: What do ya think?

Yenniku grumbles, and Zulfli chuffs.

Zulfli'jin says: Well now I gotta make sure I go. We wouldn’t want Rokhan to botch this and fulfill that self-fulfilling prophecy you seem to be spittin’ out.
Rai says: ‘Dere… is one more thing. Chieftain. Sista. Chieftain.

Zulfli looks over.

Rai says: I… there’s another thing that I mentioned. I think it might be involved in this. Ya remember when I told ya I be seein’ fatha around? Well, when I did, I always run into Yenniku. I think he was tryin’ to tell us somethin’. Trying to warn us about Zalazane.

Zulfli looks at the group.

Zulfli'jin says: Under any other circumstances, I be thinkin’ ya be full of it, brotha. But maybe ya be on to somethin’.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I made the offer to Rai earlier, but I’ll make it here as well. If you would like to ask your father yourself, there are magics that can do so, should he be willing to answer the call.
Zulfli'jin says: You can do that?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s a recent development I’ve been working on, but yes. It's not enslavement. It’s simply an opening if they wish to briefly come through.

Zulfli looks to Guldrin for a moment.

Zulfli'jin says: If we can do that, then we should. If what ya be sayin’ is true, and he be tryin’ to warn us or bring us together, then it would be wise to consult him. If such a thing can be done. What do you need from me.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The presence of something connected to him. Which you have in your possession. You get three questions, that’s how that spell works. But that’s speaking directly to his soul.

Zulfi nods and holds out the glaive, hesitating for a moment before handing it over to Vel.

Zulfli'jin says: Then lets get to it.

Vel places the glaive in the center of the meeting chamber, and she starts to incantations–this time in Zandali–as she pulls out her spellbook. The color washes out of the air, and Zulfli’jin is stone-faced, but Rai’s eyes are wide and he subconsciously grabs Seria’s hand. Master Gadrin watches in awe.

Slowly but surely, in the mist, a tall, translucent figure steps forward. He’s a troll, muscular and regal. It’s Vol’jin.

Zar’Kaa immediately kneels down before the image of the troll, and he looks over and sees his three kids standing close to each other.

Vol'jin says: It be good that the three of ya be togetha now.
Rai says: Fatha…?

There is a crinkle of a smile over Vol’jin’s eyes.

Rai says: Fatha… why? Why did ya appear to me? What were you tryin’ to tell me and no one else?
Vol'jin says: Because you be the youngest, and the most intune with the spirits. The most intune with your sorrow. Ya got the biggest heart, ma boy. There be no other option. You could see me, you could feel when the others might not. They may have been distracted with their responsibilities. With their own troubles. With their own battle. But this one, this one be yours, just as much as anyone else’s, Rai.

Zar’Kaa rises slowly.

Zar'Kaa says: Chieftain Vol’jin… why did you escape from the Shadowlands?
Vol'jin says: I had to follow him. Zalazane… he be the closest thing I ever had to a brotha. His sins be my sins, his crimes be my crimes. The troll war, the uprising that took me and so many others… all of that… I be as responsible for creatin’ the monster that Zalazane has become as he is for perpetuating such darkness. As long as his soul persists, free to enslave the souls of my people, I cannot rest. I cannot let them suffer any more than they have already suffered.
Zar'Kaa says: They won’t. Soon enough, we do this for you and the rest of the tribe, chieftain.

Zulfli balls her hands into fists.

Zulfli'jin says: Chieftain. Fatha. Am I doin’ the right thing? Am I leadin’ our people the right way? Or am I just goin’ to…

She trails off.

Vol’jin kneels down to just over Zulfli’s standing height as he hovers over her.

Vol'jin says: The greatest question of any chieftain, or any tribe, is if they know what they be doin’.

He places a spectral hand on Zulfli’s chest.

Vol'jin says: Ya be doin’ better than I was when I first started. Follow your heart. Follow your mind.

He moves his hand to her head.

Vol'jin says: And you’ll do us proud.

He then starts to fade out.

Vol'jin says: I be with ya when the time comes. When the time comes to end this.

His image disappears completely as the last vestiges of the magic fades away. In the silence that follows, Vel gingerly picks up the glaive and approaches to hand it back to Zulfli. The chieftain looks at her.

Zulfli'jin says: Thank you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s a chance any child deserves to have.
Zulfli'jin says: I’ll ready myself to go. If you need anything else before we leave, let me know.

Yenniku grits his teeth, staring where the phantom was. Zar’Kaa walks over and puts a hand on his shoulder.

Zar'Kaa says: Won’t be the last chance ya get to ask him what ya need to…
Yenniku says: This isn’t my thing. All this mojo. Talkin’ to spirits and gods.
Zar'Kaa says: It ain’t my thing either. But as long as you ain’t be too far from one Darkspear tribe or another, I think you’ll get your chance again.
Yenniku says: I got nothin’ to say to him. Nothin’ I can’t say to someone else.
Zar'Kaa says: Perhaps. But if that changes… at least you know now that it is possible. That may not be comfortin’, but at least you now know. That you can talk to him if you choose.
Yenniku says: You know, Zar’Kaa, right? They said that a troll once cast himself into the Great Seal and he survived the fall. That doesn’t mean I’m gonna race to try it myself.

Yenniku smiles, squeezes his shoulder, and walks out of the meeting room.

Seria turns herself back into a troll.

Before leaving, Vel steps into an alley and opens a [Magnificent Mansion] for the orphans. The architecture is more akin to the city and the servants are little saurids. She looks over at saurids creeping in the trash.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I don’t know if you can hear me, Jani. But, this is for your children. They can enter, no one else can. They can use respite.

The saurids watch the magic with their beady eyes.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I didn't appreciate the non-consensual polymorph, but I’m not going to stay mad at you when there are orphans in the streets. You helped us and I appreciate that.

She then opens the door, and walks away. Two of the saurids creep up to the door. Then one tests the door, but hops out. As she’s farther away she hears something bigger than a saurid start to check it out, as the children start to come out of hiding.

Zar’Kaa leaves a bag of gold somewhere as well.

Zar'Kaa says: It be for the kids, not for you, loa.

He swears he hears Jani’s cackling, but it may have been the wind.

The group reconvenes a bit later–Zulfli with a few of her trusted warriors–and Seria uses [Transport via Plants] to return to the Echo Isles. Yenniku is a bit overwhelmed by the portal, and he cautiously sticks his hand in, but then Seria shoves him through.

Zulfli laughs before she steps through as well.

As they appear in the center of the town, eyes come to them. Rokhan and Vanira are speaking nearby, but they see Rokhan freeze as his eyes meet the group. Vanira’s mouth opens, dumbstruck. Then the stun is broken.

Darkspear Guard says: Sista? Is that you? No way!

One of the warriors shouts out to one of the Echo Isle trolls.

Darkspear Guard says: I thought you were dead!

The two female trolls run to each other, reunited as they didn’t know the other was alive. Vanira and Rokhan start to make their way over.

Zuni says: Seria! Zar’Kaa!

Zuni and Zekhan charge right in front of Rokhan and Vanira. Zuni jabs Zar’Kaa in the shoulder.

Zuni says: Seems ya be tryin’ to hog all Seria’s time for yourself, ya?
Zar'Kaa says: Hello again, Zuni.

Zar’Kaa sighs.

Zar'Kaa says: Ya know what. She’s all yours. Have at it.

He half-pats half-shoves Zuni in Seria’s direction. Zuni stumbles a bit, but rights himself and chuckles.

Zuni says: Ya lookin’ good Seria! Ya should have let me know, I would have come with ya! I’m a much better tour guide than Zar’Kaa, ya know.

Seria stares at him, ignores him, and then looks for Riff. Zuni chuckles it off.

Zuni says: Ah! You must be… um… the chieftain! Good to meet you!
Zulfli'jin says: Pleasure to meet you as well.
Zuni says: Zuni! And you!

He looks at Yenniku.

Zuni says: You must be Yenniku! Brotha!

Zuni pulls Yenniku into a hug.

Yenniku says: I think ya might have lost me, sir.

He tries to pull out of the hug, but Zuni is way stronger, so Yenniku pats him on the back.

Zuni says: You and me share a mada!

Yenniku’s eyes cross.

Yenniku says: Ya got to be kiddin’ me.
Zuni says: I know, it’s crazy!

Zuni grabs him around the shoulder and turns him to Vanira.

Zuni says: Mada-captain! It’s Yenniku! He is alive! Ain’t that crazy!

Vanira stops and stares at Yenniku. Yenniku looks back at her.

Yenniku says: Ya know… maybe I should not have come here. Is that tree still open?

As he tries to turn away, Zuni grabs him again.

Zuni says: No no, we got so much to catch up, brotha! Come on!
Vanira says: I… think that’s enough. We got time to talk. For now, the travel here must have been… lets make sure ya got everythin’ ya need.

Vanira and Zulfli look at each other, and they nod to each other. Vanira then shoots a look at Rokhan, before guiding her two sons away. Rokhan stands up tall.

Rokhan says: It’s been some time.
Zulfli'jin says: Rokhan. I be glad someone else didn’t kill you.

Rokhan chuffs.

Rokhan says: Charmin’ as ever. I presume that you be ‘ere to help with the ritual?
Zulfli'jin says: Someone got to make sure you don’t mess it up.

Rokhan grits his teeth and clicks his tongue against the back of his teeth.

Rokhan says: It… will be good to have another shadowhunter that knows what they’re doin’.

Zulfli nods.

Zulfli'jin says: Likewise. Now what’s gonna be goin’ on?
Rokhan says: I suppose that’s a good idea…

They go off as Rokhan explains what is going to be needed. Zekhan then runs up.

Zekhan says: Zuni! Ugh, where did he go? I turn around for two seconds and he disappears. Unbelievable. Oh! Good to see the rest of you.
Zar'Kaa says: We just got back. Good to see you Zekhan.
Zekhan says: And you must be Rai, right?

He looks at Rai.

Zekhan says: You must be the chieftain’s son! I heard so much about you!
Rai says: Good stuff, right?
Zekhan says: Yeah!

The two of them just go to hang out.

Once things calm down Vel approaches Zar’kaa.

Velameestra Windrunner says: So what exactly was all of that back in Zandalar?
Zar'Kaa says: By that you mean, back in the fight?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The fight. The shouting of your name. The obvious lack of discretion in general in a group that would have been killed if we would have been found out.
Zar'Kaa says: Well, it seemed the cat was out of the bag so to speak. It seems that we were already going to grab a lot of attention given the circumstances. And I don’t know about you but whenever my enemies brandish weapons at me, I aim to kill.
Velameestra Windrunner says: They weren’t trying to kill us until their people were murdered first. Also did you hear what they called that priestess that was there? I don’t know the politics of Zandalar but they called her “Your Highness”.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. I take your point but, I don’t think any of us could have seen that person.
Velameestra Windrunner says: No. But more what I’m saying is that beheading first and loud proclamations of your identity tends to not be the definition of discretion. That you were the one that warned us of when we first arrived.
Zar'Kaa says: Alright. You make a good point. I think in the moment I was trying to get more attention on me then Yenniku. I didn’t know what they were gonna do with him. So maybe they were going to just rough us up, but they might have killed him. I didn’t want that to happen. But. I ain’t trying to make excuses. I’m sorry. I did not mean to cause any danger with you all. More then what we were already into.

Vel nods.

Velameestra Windrunner says: That elderly woman she was with, I’m pretty sure she also saw through the disguises. And I would not be surprised if we were watched by that point forward.
Zar'Kaa says: That is a safe bet I think. And something to keep in mind the next time I go to Zandalar. Which after this business is concluded should be soon. I’ll try to keep an eye out, to make sure they’re looking out for you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ideally we’ll never be returning there, but that may be something warning your chieftain about in the future.

Zar’kaa nods.

Zar'Kaa says: Just for recompense, it’s the least I can do for my actions today.

Vel raises an eyebrow.

Zar'Kaa says: In any case, as I said I’m sorry. I will take this as a lesson moving forward. As for shouting my name. Announcing my tribe as I go into battle? Ain’t gonna be ashamed of that.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I am not saying you should be. I am just stating this as someone looking out for her comrades. In situations like this discretion tends to be the most valuable thing you have. And that frequently means not proclaiming who you are.
Zar'Kaa says: At the very least, they only know me. For what that’s gonna matter. If that priestess saw through the glamour that you put up, doesn’t mean she knows your names, or faces. If I hear something about it I’ll let you know.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I don’t care about if they know us in Zandalar. Ideally we’re never going back. But your chief being allied with elves and others, in the heart of the city, something she should be warned about. On the off chance she saw through the illusion like I think she did. She looked blind but very aware.
Zar'Kaa says: Well in that case. If I don’t tell her and the priestess does, she can then claim… what do you call it? Plausible deniability?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ultimately that’s your call. I’m not getting involved in the politics.
Zar'Kaa says: Kay, other than that I take your point. You have my sincerest apologies. I don’t know what else you want.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I just wanted to say that. It’s fine.

Vel then drops the conversation, not looking for anything. Just simply wanting to express her frustration.

Remnii goes to check in on Maraad.

Zar’Kaa opts to go find Seria and he finds her with Riff.

Zar'Kaa says: Hey. We haven’t had much of a moment to catch up. Uh…

He looks at Riff.

Zar'Kaa says: Little one, can I have a moment with your mada?
Riff says: Okay! Just so you know, I already got a fatha! I’m gonna go find Zuni!

He runs off.

Zar'Kaa says: Huh. Got some spunk, that one. Be strange, the places we end up in life. All those years ago when you and Rai were banished. I didn’t know what would become of you two. I always kept the faith that you two would find a way to survive, but I didn’ know for sure. How did you two make it through?

Seria points to herself.

Seria says: Me.
Zar'Kaa says: Right, but you’ve gotten a lot more powerful than when we was both kids. I mean, ya, you could rough up a few bad mouthin’ Darkspear, but even just based on that fight at the docks… ya got a lot stronger since then. How?
Seria says: Because I wanted to survive.

Zar’Kaa nods.

Zar'Kaa says: I’m glad you found a way. I always hoped you would. I didn’t get a chance to say it back when it happened, but I’m sorry about Kala. She was a… good person. She didn’t like me very much, but who did?

Seria stays silent.

Zar'Kaa says: Hm. A person of as few words as ever. Some things don’t change.

Zar’Kaa chuckles.

Zar'Kaa says: Well look. If anything, I know ya better than to draw these things out. I just wanted you to know that seein’ you alive again… it’s good. I’ll let ya get back to your kid. But before I do…

He reaches into a satchel at his side and pulls out a piece of porcelain with a petal on it.

Zar'Kaa says: Back in the old home, yer mada gave Boss Rokhan a gift. After the battle with Zalazane, that gift was shattered to pieces. The old man wanted to leave it behind, but I took a piece of the jar. Just in case I would see you again. I thought if I did, I could give ya somethin’ to remember Kala by.

He holds the piece of pottery out, and Seria takes it.

Zar'Kaa says: I know it won’t bring her back, but in lieu of that, at least ya have this. I’m sorry you was banished all those years ago and you and Rai had to spend all that time alone. At least now you have friends. Hopefully I still be one of them.

Zar’Kaa nods and turns away to take his leave.

Later on, Vel also finds Seria.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Seria. Do you have a moment?
Seria says: Yes.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I wanted to ask if there was anything else involved in this entire Bwonsamdi thing I should know about? Vol’jin was a bit of a surprise.
Seria says: No. That’s everything.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. I suppose going forward obviously I don’t mind getting involved. Generally speaking if someone asks me for help I prefer to know all the information. It makes my job easier. And secrets of a sort are something I don’t care about. But if I’m involved I like to know what I’m working with. Just for the future.

Seria nods.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Alright. Also, on the note we spoke about earlier. Obviously that offer still stands, but if you don’t want me there I can put it in your ring. I just need to know how to prepare it. I understand those things can be private.
Seria says: I may take you up on that offer, but I may want to talk to Rokhan first.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That’s reasonable. Do you want me to prepare it or… you know it’s probably just easier to put it in the ring.

Seria is quiet.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ll prepare it tomorrow… But I’ll talk to you later I suppose.

After Vel left, Seria sits for a moment–playing with the piece of pottery–but then gets up to go find Rokhan. It’s starting to get dark, the stars emerging in the sky above. She finds him in his hut triple checking his supplies, and he smiles at her.

Rokhan says: Seria. Come in, come in. Is everythin’ alright?

Seria nods.

Seria says: I… wanted to ask ya somethin’.

Rokhan pulls his attention fully to her.

Rokhan says: Ya can ask me anythin’ ya need. What can I help ya with?
Seria says: Um… Vel has ‘dis spell. And… with it I could talk to my mada.

Rokhan blinks.

Rokhan says: ‘Dat girl be full of surprises. But… why ya comin’ to me about it? ‘Dis be somethin’ that you deserve.

Seria holds out the piece of pottery. His eyes fall on it, and his mouth widens–his brain blanking out for a moment.

Rokhan says: Where… where did ya get that?
Seria says: Zar’Kaa gave it to me.
Rokhan says: That fool… I, uh… guess he kept it all these years, didn’t he?
Seria says: He said it was somethin’ my mada gave ya.

Rokhan nods.

Rokhan says: It is. One of many things.
Seria says: I was wonderin’ if ya wanted to see her too.

Rokhan completely shuts down for a moment.

Rokhan says: I… Seria… after everyt’ing… I… I don’t know if I could face her spirit… I’ve done nothin’ but fail her. Time and time again. Ever since I… ever since we lost her. She meant so much to you… and I couldn’t stop her from… I couldn’t… I don’t know what I would say. That I would just… get in the way…
Seria says: I don’t think that.

Rokhan cautiously looks at her.

Rokhan says: Seria… how… how could you forgive me? For everythin’ I’ve failed to do for you. Why do ya still fight for me?
Seria says: …because that’s what my mada taught me.

Rokhan visibly chokes, and then starts to sob quietly. He fights back a few tears, and then looks at her again and nods.

Rokhan says: Alright then. I… if ya think that I should be there too, then I want to be there. I want to be there with you and with her.

Seria nods and explains how the spell works. Then she gets Riff and they go and find Vel, who is sitting with her journal. She looks up, seeing Rokhan, Seria, and Riff.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Oh… are we doing this… tonight then?
Rokhan says: If it’s not too much trouble.
Velameestra Windrunner says: No, it’s fine, I just assumed you would want... nevermind.

Vel gets the things for the ritual. Rokhan lays the porcelain and Seria lays the necklace into the ritual area as Vel draws the magic. The magic begins to warp and wrap around the items, which sing and dance in tandem. They feel the magic reaching beyond the veil. They wait for a time, and Vel feels as the magic begins to ebb away. The magic couldn’t reach her.

Vel furrows her brow.

Rokhan says: Is something wrong?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s not able to reach her.
Rokhan says: Why wouldn’t that work?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Either it’s some sort of case where she’s become an entity beyond a mortal, or she’s unwilling or unable. Something may be interfering with it.

Vel recalls the words Vol’jin had said. That he couldn’t stand by and let the spirits of people be tormented.

Velameestra Windrunner says: We spoke to Voljin. He mentioned Zalazane and tormented spirts.

She looks to the others with a dire expression.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Zalazane may have her.
Rokhan says: The other spirits that are missing…
Velameestra Windrunner says: He may have took them when he escaped.

Rokhan’s fists ball in anger at his side.

Rokhan says: We… are going to end this.

Vel nods.

Seria says: I’m gonna tear him apart.

There are tears in her eyes.

Velameestra Windrunner says: On the morrow you will get your chance.

Rokhan reaches out and puts a hand on Seria’s shoulder, and gives her a nod. Riff is also holding her hand. Rokhan looks at Vel and gives her a nod before they disperse for the night.

Meanwhile, back on Zandalari, Tol’vas had taken to the skies over Zandalar, heading towards the ridges the priestess had told him about. He sees the ridges, but it’s not stone–its bone. And there is a massive skull overgrown with yellowing, green moss and lichen.

It’s a place where many loa go to die.

Tol’vas starts to ask around, looking for the wolf loa. No one is able to give him a firm answer, so he opts to land and use [Commune with Nature]. He gets a sense the veil between life and death is much thinner here than in some other areas. He also senses a powerful fey in the area, which seems to centered around the peak of the nearby mountain.

He takes off to look, and doesn’t see anything at first, but then he hears a howl. The howl is joined by others in a chorus, and there is a rumbling of thunder–the clouds which were clear earlier had now darkened, and there is lightning dancing through the thunderheads. He looks down again, and he notes there are holes in the rocks that seem to have been made by storms in the past, and he sees three small wolves with deep blue fur that head into one of the caves.

He lands nearby, and then takes his true form. The wolves inside look at him. They have fur of blue, grey, and white, and there seems to be small storms rumbling in their eyes.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I’ve come to speak to Xolotal.

The wolves look at him, and then he hears a voice from behind him.

Xolotal says [sylvan]: Is that so?

Tol’vas turns around and sees a great wolf with deep blue fur that crackles with static electricity. His eyes are pure white, and there are streaks of lightning around his paws.

Xolotal says [sylvan]: Who are you?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: My name is Tol’vas Moonshadow.

The wolf smells the air.

Xolotal says [sylvan]: I see. Well you’ve found me, so what now?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I was hoping to request information if you have it. I am looking into ways to bring back some of your kin who fell long ago.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: Mortals are always seeking something. They chase the storm, not knowing what is and is not out of reach. You presume to rewrite the laws of creation?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: No, not rewrite, but I don’t presume I know all of them.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: A rare gift, the wisdom to see you do not know. Something mortals also seem to lack. I smell him on you. His scent.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: His blessing and his curse.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: Mortal words. What you seek is not possible.

Tol’vas sighs.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I figured. But I can’t leave a stone unturned.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: I suppose that is true. For all of you. What does this place mean to you, mortal? This place you’ve come to?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I admit you were unknown to me. I was pointed this way by a young troll woman named Rive.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: That name means nothing. You people… the names you give are meaningless.

Tol’vas smiles.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: Then I suppose I have another question. Something more within your ability?
Xolotal says [sylvan]: Always more questions.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I’ve been told I talk too much.

The wolf looks unamused, and the clouds open. It starts to rain and thunder.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I will pay a price for it. Whatever it takes. You can smell him on me. This consequence was one I deserve, but others do not. Can I remove it from them? Or help them keep their minds?
Xolotal says [sylvan]: This existence that you called a blessing and a curse. It is as tied to this place as this place is to everything else. I did not know my sire. His power is known to me only in his legacy and in the memories I share. I was born in his dying howls to the sky that pierced the heavens like thunder. The last of his children. Thus his cries, his rage, his existence is as unknown to me as it was to him. There is no secret, there is no trick to existence, mortal. One simply survives. Comes and goes like the rolling thunderhead. You cannot stop thunder, nor the storm. That is why we howl. Our voices do not bring the thunder like many believe, they announce the storms. But we do not flee. And neither should you. Death. Life. Blessings. Curses. It is cyclical. What is cannot happen again, but will be, must come to pass. You seek to bring him back, don’t you?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: I owe him that much at least.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: When he returns from the eternal winter, it will not be as it was. Lightning does not strike twice. Knowing this, do you still seek the impossible?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: Even if he hadn’t sacrificed himself to save others, had he lived, he wouldn’t be the same. That’s life. We change, grow, and adapt.
Xolotal says [sylvan]: Then learn to read the clouds, little mortal. So you might howl when the storm comes.

Xolotal heads into the cave with his brethren.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says [sylvan]: Thank you for your time and your words.

Tol’vas seeks out the nearest tree, and for the briefest of moments, his eyes are drawn to the thunderheads overhead that are lightning up the darkening night. His eyes linger, and he closes his eyes and reaches out. He knows about shamans. He’s seen them work. Though the knowledge of nature he has is more based in life than the aspects of nature themself, he can tap into such aspects. He realizes that the storm above him is so far beyond his understanding, but he can still sense it, in a way. As lightning peals through the sky and strikes the ground not far from him, sending sparks off the skeleton, the way the lightning strikes the earth–the howl of the thunder–perhaps there is something to what he was saying after all. And perhaps a storm is coming, but he needs to be ready for it. Otherwise he’ll just caught in the rain like he is now.

He opens the portal with [Transport via Plants], and steps through to the Echo Isles.

Vel looks up, clocking Tol’vas’s arrival.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Did you find what you needed?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Not what I wanted. I found something, I just need to understand it now.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ah. Talking to so-called higher beings. I’ve come to expect that being the usual.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: You’ve obviously never talked to the wolf ones. They are very direct.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …No. No I have not.

At some point, the seeming did drop, and Yenniku was looking for Remnii. However, when he got pointed at her, he sees a draenei instead.

Yenniku says: Um. Who are you exactly? I was looking for Remnii.
Remnii says: Oh, it’s still me. Hello Yenniku.

Yenniku’s mouth is agape.

Yenniku says: Why not!
Remnii says: Are you okay? Is anything wrong?
Yenniku says: I be fine. Everythin’ is just fine. I’m gonna go get a drink.
Remnii says: If you needed me I’ll be here!
Yenniku says: I just wanted to thank ya.
Remnii says: I’m glad you came. I know it’s a lot.

Yenniku waves it off and passes by Zar’Kaa, who was also looking for Remnii. He dodges around Zar’Kaa, who chuckles softly.

Zar'Kaa says: Been a long day for him, eh?
Remnii says: Being plucked into an adventure is a lot, even for those accustomed to it.
Zar'Kaa says: Well. Seems to like you at least.
Remnii says: Less so now, perhaps. But a good night’s rest may do him some good.
Zar'Kaa says: Perhaps time around his actual family as well.
Remnii says: I hope so. As complex as it may be… is there anything I can help you with? You’re welcome to sit, but I fear what I’m working on is not that interesting.
Zar'Kaa says: What ya be up to?
Remnii says: I’m carving sending stones. Communication is… difficult at points.
Zar'Kaa says: I’ve heard of them before, but ain’t really familiar with many magic objects. Don’t be usin’ spells meself, so magic eludes me.
Remnii says: Well…

She shows him the stone she is working on.

Remnii says: Magic items can help close the gap. For instance, my finished one…

She shows him her own.

Remnii says: Starting with a simple stone, you can send short messages over long distances. It’s quite useful, and seems everyone yet no one has them. I welcome the company.
Zar'Kaa says: I don’t want to take up your time–
Remnii says: I can almost make these in my sleep at this point.
Zar'Kaa says: Good. I wanted some company meself, at least without someone yellin’ at me or givin me the cold shoulder.

Zar’Kaa looks at the sending stones.

Zar'Kaa says: May I?
Remnii says: Sure.

She hands over her finished one.

Zar'Kaa says: Interestin’. I remember you sayin’ you ain’t from Azeroth. You use this to talk to your people off world?
Remnii says: Our people are scattered, but now I can–to a degree anyway. I can also talk to some people here. A small network. Though you can only send one message a day, it’s useful.
Zar'Kaa says: Very interestin’. Maintainin’ those connections be important. It’s been one of the big problems of the Darkspear for some time. We’ve been separated.
Remnii says: So I had gleaned from your conversations and observing.
Zar'Kaa says: You’ve seen most of the Darkspear we all know about, but we could be anywhere. Durin’ the second troll wars, many of the tribes scattered around the world. It was a chaotic time.

Remnii nods, listening as she continues to work.

Remnii says: Well, it seems trolls come in many… subspecies as well?

Zar’Kaa nods.

Zar'Kaa says: They be different dependin’ on the part of the world. Me, for example. They call us jungle trolls. We are in the tropical places. Then forest trolls up north, and the ice trolls further north. I be freezin’ my tusks off up there, don’t know about you.
Remnii says: I prefer warmer climes myself.
Zar'Kaa says: Was it warm where you came from?
Remnii says: Yes. Though the creatures were all large. Massive spiders. No dogs, only wolves. The fauna has the choice to be big or small here. Then again, the people do too…

Remnii considers.

Remnii says: Azeroth has a splendid variety of sizes and cultures. A wellspring of interesting things.
Zar'Kaa says: What do you call your world?
Remnii says: Draenor. No one should return there anytime soon, so this is our home now.

Remnii seems cautious and thoughtful and tends to measure her words. They continue to talk for a bit, seemingly getting to know each other.

Seria spends a lot of the evening on the beach, contemplating, and Vel opts to spend the night in a tree–musing on what’s to come.

August 3rd

The group gathers in the square, readying themselves for what’s to come. Remnii notes Yenniku and greets him.

Remnii says: Good morning.
Yenniku says: Ah. Hey.

He looks at her, a bit disarmed and clearly nursing a hangover.

Remnii says: Oh. Come here.

She casts [Lesser Restoration].

Yenniku says: Did you just heal me with your sparkly magic?
Remnii says: I do like sparks and magic! I hope you feel better. It’s nice to meet you officially.

Yenniku is clearly disarmed.

Rokhan says: If everyone is ready, it is time. Yenniku, you will be at the center of this. We will protect ya, but ya need to listen to us to the letter. Ya hear me, my boy?
Yenniku says: I hear ya, I hear ya. Tell me what to do, boss man.
Rokhan says: Me and the others will begin the ritual. When we do, ya are gonna need to bring the pieces together to active the hex. That means we’re going to need your ring, Vel.

Vel nods and starts to pull the ring off.

Kel'Thuzad says [telepathically]: I’ll speak to you soon. Don’t get yourself killed, Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathically]: Too late for that.

Kel’Thuzad chuckles as Vel pulls the ring off and hands it over to Yenniku.

Rokhan says: Zulfli, you’re gonna need to give him your glaive. Once it be done, the physical manifestation of the Hungering Hex will show up. We should be able to follow it and use it to track down the prey. I don’t know where it’s gonna go, but I have a few ways to follow it. Be ready. Just about anythin’ could happen, and once it begins, there ain’t no way to stop it. Don’t hold back. The hex won’t let him slip away.
Vanira says: I will be assisting those that are preparing to face him, and I’ll watch your back in case anything happens.
Zuni says: I’ll be makin’ sure my brother don’t get himself into trouble, ya!

He slaps Yenniku on the back, who coughs.

Yenniku says: Yeah. Glad to see that. Thanks…

Zar’Kaa puts a hand on Rokhan’s shoulder.

Zar'Kaa says: I told ya you and I will see this through, and today is the day, boss man.

Rokhan nods and glances at Seria as well.

Rokhan says: Once and for all.

Zuni elbows Seria.

Zuni says: Looks like we’ll ge the chance to fight side by side, ya? Make sure ya can keep your eyes off the gun show!

Zar’Kaa jabs a finger in Zuni’s chest.

Zar'Kaa says: You. I tell you to get out of the melee, ya get out of the melee.
Zuni says: Ya got it, captain.
Zar'Kaa says: Alright. Then good luck.
Zuni says: You too. Whoever be gettin’ the least shrunken heads has to buy a round!

Some of the other headhunters cheer.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Do you… shrink them on the fly?
Zuni says: No!
Zar'Kaa says: Just give us yours, we show you what we do.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’m way older than you, don’t talk to me like that.
Zulfli'jin says: I wasn’t able to be there when we took the fight last time. I won’t make that mistake again.

Zar’Kaa gives her a salute.

Zar'Kaa says: We be doin’ this for you too, chieftain.

Zekhan puts a hand on Zuni’s shoulder.

Zekhan says: We’ll get out on the other side! Not… not literally!
Rokhan says: That might be a part of what has to happen. Be ready.
Elissa Cross says: We’ll be ready and on standby, and we’ll make sure to back everyone up!

Maraad also nods.

Maraad says: You can count on me, Remnii.
Remnii says: Be safe, both of you.
Elissa Cross says: We’ll watch Riff too!

Zar’Kaa points at Riff.

Zar'Kaa says: Ya don’t be gettin’ killed! I can’t take a dead body to Zandalar!
Riff says: They have to catch me first!
Zar'Kaa says: Then run fast!

Riff runs over to the group.

Riff says: We gonna do this! Death Adders!

The group gives him the sign back.

Riff says: You can be a Death Adder too, Zar’Kaa!
Rokhan says: Alright, everyone else, out of the circle!

Yenniku stands in the center of the functional salt circle, and Tol’vas and Seria both use [Conjure Fey]. Tol’vas thinks to the conversation with Xolotal, and there is a peel of thunder. As the portal to the dream opens, a bolt of lightning strikes out–revealing a storm wolf. As Seria opens a portal herself, a rainbow exits–forming into a fae dragon.

The ritual begins, some of the more powerful shamans joining Rokhan, Zulfli, and Master Gadrin. Yenniku looks around, clutching to the glaive with the ring on his hand.

Rokhan says: Yenniku, ya need to draw a small amount of blood and put it on the glaive.
Yenniku says: I thought ya said this wasn’t a blood sacrifice!
Rokhan says: Just do it!

Yenniku sighs and follows the directions. The blood starts to ripple across the blade of the glaive, and Vel sees a familiar phantasm emanate from the ring. It’s a a black, violet, and red shadow–the large spider of the Hungering Hex. It crawls its way out onto Yenniku’s arm, who looks on in horror as the spider’s shadowy manibles wrap around the blood.

Then its eyes turn to Yenniku.

Rokhan says: Stare it down! It can’t hurt you enough!
Yenniku says: Enough!? What does that mean?!
Rokhan says: Focus!

Yenniku looks at the spider, the spider turns and moves overtop of Yenniku. It lunges at him, and sinks its fangs into his chest. He stumbles back and falls, and he winces, but the hex passes through him and starts to skitter off towards the southwest. Yenniku pants as he grabs his chest.

They can see a tether of magic connecting the ring, via blood, to the hex manifestation–and it seems his arm is being pulled.

Rokhan says: Everyone! After the manifestation! Yenniku, on your feet! Ya need to lead us there!

Zuni rushes forward and helps him up.

Yenniku says: This way! It’s angry! Its prey is close!

They start to run, and they emerge on the beach.

Yenniku says: It went over the ocean.

He points toward the cemetery island.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Rohkan, if you don’t have a way over I do, if there’s a grave nearby.
Rokhan says: There might be something. Otherwise we can take boats. It will take us a moment… but.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We can be there instantaneously if there’s a grave.
Rokhan says: There are a few. Some of the raptors. If you have a way over there, I trust you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I have a way.
Rokhan says: Vanira, take us to where the raptors are interred.

When they arrive, something is off. Vel can sense the place has been affected. She feels herself stronger, and the graves are open.

Velameestra Windrunner says: This place has already been desecrated…

They look up and they see smoke rising from the village.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I think they’re attacking the village.
Zar'Kaa says: Agh, double back!

Uther is already running, Rokhan grabs his shoulder.

Rokhan says: No, that is what he wants us to do. If the hex is heading to that island, that is where we must go. The protectors we left will make sure the place is safe.

Vanira points to some of the reinforcements.

Vanira says: Go and reinforce the village!
Rokhan says: Vel, do whatever you’re gonna do!

Vel steps forward and uses [Grave Stride], tearing open the doorway into the graves as she focuses on the graveyard isle to open the pathway.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Everyone through!

Zar’Kaa is the first one to run through, and as soon as he emerges, a trollish corpse leaps at him. He thrusts his spear through it, and throws the creature to the ground–lifeless. They had emerged into a small army of the risen dead.

The other headhunters along with Elissa and Maraad rush forward, pushing the dead back. Yenniku points the ring out.

Yenniku says: It be close! It’s this way!

They see a cliffside where there is a lake. As the hex rushes forward, they can see the surface of the water ripple. More risen monstrosities continue to attack the arriving forces, and they see a massive, partially fleshless face of a devilsaur emerge from the water. They hear raspy commands in Zandali, and on top of the creature is a troll warrior with jewelry and a water-bloated body. It’s a jungle troll, rising atop the undead creature. A pile of zombie parts moves on its own–made up of the parts of the dead. There are also raptors running around, their flesh half sloughed off. All of their faces are covered in macabre, hexed masks.

Yenniku is still being yanked towards the center.

Yenniku says: It’s coming from the lake!
Rokhan says: I should be able to reveal him! But that thing is interfering! Take it down!

Zar’Kaa closes on the unburied, swinging with his spear and his axe with a flurry of rapid attacks. He sloughs off chunks of of the corpse, but a hand grabs his axe as it reaches out form the pile of corpses.

Nearby one of the dire troll zombies and a raptor, the cliff face starts to collapse with the instability of the magic that is starting to be thrown around–and they are buried beneath the resulting rubble.

Zulfli'jin says: Do what ya need to do!

Zulfli snatches the glaive out of Yenniku’s hands and she casts [Protection from Evil and Good] on herself, Vanira, Yenniku, and Rokhan. She then moves engage the swarm of undead.

Vel activates her bladesong and then holds out her hand. An icy glyph appears under several of the enemies and then explodes upward in a [Blizzard], freezing several of the zombies in the swarm stone-cold.

One of the risen headhunters runs at Vel, and it swings at her with its glaive–but she effortlessly dances out of the way. A zombie raptor leaps at the fey dragon, but it misses. The fey dragon soars overhead and puts its claws together as it casts a spell–forming pixie-like dust in the air. It hurls the spell at the risen devilsaur, turning the devilsaur into a small skeletal lizard. The warrior riding it topples to the ground, and the fey dragon backs off.

Another headhunter moves in on Zar’Kaa, but also misses.

One of the zombie raptors runs at Uther, but it’s slowed by the frigid cold. The unburied lurches over Zar’Kaa and brings its arm down–trying to engulf him. But Zar’Kaa is able to dodge away, and it shambles over–knocking down a tree.

Seria turns into a bear and slashes and bites into the headhunter that had engaged with Vel.

The Rastakhan body double stands up and starts to shamble forward to engage with Zulfli’jin. His weapon comes down, but there is a black flash of energy as his glaive glances across her arm. The swarm next to her lashes out–sending her hurling back and knocking her concentration off her spell. It then roils over her, the undead dragging her into its heart.

Zekhan uses [Call Lightning].

Zekhan says: You got this one, right?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I think we’ll be fine!

Some dust shoots into the air and forms a cloud that cracks lightning down on the swarm and the body double.

Vanira says: Zulfli!

Vanira runs forward to engage the body double, swinging her glaive around and cracking it into the undead’s body.

Zuni backs up and throws some spears at the zombie raptor next to Uther, leaving it critically wounded as an arm sloughs off. Remnii casts [Holy Weapon] on Uther.

Remnii says: Light go with you, Uther! If you find yourself overwhelmed, let me know and we will blow it sky high!

Uther holds his fist back looking for a forearm smash.

Uther Menethil says: The Light is our strength!
Remnii says: Oh! Me! That’s for me!

She returns the gesture, much less strongly than someone like Maraad. She then casts [Mind Sliver] on the raptor, severing the rudimentary mind it still had–and the zombie collapses to the ground.

The storm wolf howls and a bolt of lightning arcs through and slams into the unburied. Rokhan continues to channel the spell.

The polymorphed lizard yips angrily as it scurries up to Zar’Kaa.

Uther runs for the zombie swarm, swinging with an explosion of holy energy. He swings again, incinerating multiple zombies with every strike. As the holy light takes hold, he slams his hammer down, energy erupting in a golden dome that sizzles every remaining corpse into a glittering mist. Zulfli is unraveled from the the swarm.

Zulfli'jin says: My thanks, Uther!

Uther taps his forehead as if he’s tipping a cap.

Uther Menethil says: My pleasure!

He then swings around at the Rastakhan body double, but the undead catches the hammer–the Light sizzling off his body as he shoves it aside. Tol’vas casts [Gravity Sinkhole], ripping one of the headhunters away from Vel as gravity collapses. He then plants a wolf spirit totem. More rocks tumble down on a nearby risen headhunter and another zombie raptor.

Seria swipes into the headhunter still engaged with Vel, and she pins it down and severs its neck–destroying it completely.

Zar'Kaa says: I’m comin’ chieftain!

He swings at the unburied again, steeling himself against the stench. He tears corpse after corpse asunder, destroying it. He then runs past Vanira to go after the fake Rastakhan. One of the risen headhunters clips at him, and Zekhan freezes as he recognizes the headhunter.

Zekhan says: …mada?

His hands spark with lightning.

Zekhan says: You’re going to pay for this, Zalazane!

Zar’Kaa swings at the Rastakhan body double, his axe slamming into it.

Zuni says: I got your back, brotha!

He hurls some spears at the dire troll zombies, and one of the spears slams into its eye.

Zuni says: Hah! Take that!

The dire troll slowly pulls the spear out as Zekhan causes [Call Lightning] to slam into the Rastakhan body double and the risen headhunter he recognized as his mother. He then casts [Spiritual Weapon], conjuring it next to the dire troll zombie.

The storm wolf starts to eviscerate the nearest zombie raptor, destroying it. The dire troll zombie lurches at Seria, its body starting to regenerate. He grabs her with the slam, managing to grapple her. Yenniku tries to move backwards, but the hex forces him to move forward. The buried zombie raptor manages to unbury itself.

Vanira manages to bring Zekhan’s risen mother low.

Vanira says: Be at peace, hunter.

She tries to strike at Rastakhan’s body double, but she scrapes its body ineffectively.

Remnii hurls a [Mind Sliver] at the zombie dire troll, and its head cracks back–temporarily deactivating the regeneration. The remaining headhunter lurches at the wolf, and a black bile spits from beneath its mask over the wolf and Vel. Vel is virtually unaffected. The Rastakhan body double splits open the ground, and skeletal hands start to reach from the ground–restraining Zar’Kaa, Yenniku, and Seria.

Tol’vas drops a [Sunfire] on the body double, and a blast of radiant, silvery energy incinerates him completely. However, the skeletal arms remain.

Rokhan says: Good work! I be breakin’ down the barriers! Things are gonna get weird!

The ground begins to shift around them as Rokhan plants the magic into the ground. Grey energy washes over the grass, giving an otherworldly glow to the world as the veil to the Shadowland is pierced.

Floating about 40 feet above the water is a figure hovering in the air. He has long, tattered clothes with burnished and tarnished goal–long white hair draping from his helmet. Two long, skeletal hands weave incantations, and they see the sunken, skeletal face of Zalazane. Chained with spectral chains are six tormented troll spirits hovering around him.

Rokhan disappears, but everyone else is there, and they can hear Rokhan’s voice.

Rokhan says: You should see him now! Take him out! Quickly!
Zulfli'jin says: Zalazane!

She reaches out and tries to use chill touch, but she misses as Zalazane effortlessly shifts away. Zalazane seems to be working some sort of incantation–the violet shadowy orb has something contained within. It’s the manifestation of the hex. Vel realizes he’s trying to do something with it

The fey dragon breathes a rainbow breath of fairy dust on the dire troll, and it promptly staggers back.

Zalazane continues to force his will on the hex, and the sphere gets smaller and smaller.

Zalazane says: Ya were bold to come ‘ere, but ya be savin’ me the trouble! I be seein’ what lies in store for the Darkspear, and I come to liberate all of you from that which is to come! Come! Join them! Join them!

Suddenly the sphere breaks as the energy of the hex wafts around him in an aura of violet. The energy that was pulling Zuni forward snaps. Zalazane swipes a claw through the air and blows a fel wind through the sky which splits in three directions–taking the forms of humanoid, ghostly forms.

The one closest to the group is a woman with bright red hair, whose flesh is in a perpetual state of incineration–her hair burning like fire. It’s Rai’s mother. Larger than the other two figures is a massive, black, conglomerate spirit with red eyes. It has a mask on its face, and it seems to be a giant bear.

On the far side, her long white hair flowing as if she was underwater is a familiar banshee–Vel’s mother, who also has a mask on her face.

Vel snarls and immediately runs forward, disappearing in a burst of snow as she closes the distance to the front line. She hurls a [Chill Touch] at Zalazane, but he hurls it back on her with a laugh. She shields the spell, her eyes burning red.

Uther follows her.

Uther Menethil says: Zalazane! Long time!
Zalazane says: I don’t even know who ya are, but I destroy ya with the rest!
Uther Menethil says: I didn’t hit you that hard!

He swings into the ursine spirit, his hammer erupting in holy damage.

Zalazane uses [Toll the Dead] on Vel, trying to push through her defenses. She resists, and he tries it again, but again she resists. One of the tormented spirits tries to go at Uther, but it flinches back–and Uther swings his hammer down, destroying the chains tethering it to Zalazane and freeing it.
