Banshees were incorporeal undead elf women that were known for their unholy screams and abilities to possess the bodies of mortals.

History

Tales of banshees, and their male counterpart farshees, have existed for as long as elves have existed on Azeroth, but some of their greatest numbers emerged from the tragedy that was the War of the Ancients when many night elves and highborne were slaughtered by the demonic invasions. The restless spirits of those murdered elves were left to wander in their tortured lamentations.

They were largely considered to be nothing more than a myth in the Eastern Kingdoms up until one was fought by Uther Menethil's party during the investigation into the undead that attacked Last Crossing in year 632. The identity of the banshee was ultimately revealed to be Gilveradin and Velameestra Windrunner's mother, Nirenn, as her engagement ring fell from its core when it was defeated.

Following the invasion of the Horde and the Sacking of Silvermoon, banshees started to become a more common occurrence in the lands of Quel'thalas.

Description

Banshees are a type of incorporeal undead that were exclusively elven women with wild hair that flowed as if underwater, clawed fingers, and a lower body that dispersed into mist. While their faces looked largely normal at rest aside from the gauntness of undeath, they could distend their jaws in a piercing, unholy scream that was horrifying to onlookers.

Abilities

By channeling the powers of their unholy wails, banshees can cause mortals around them to completely lose their will to fight and fall unconscious in the midst of even pitched battles. While the victims would awaken in time, they were defenseless otherwise, which made them vulnerable to any number of threats that could spell their doom, including the attacks of the banshee herself. In addition, the horrifying visage of a wailing banshee was a terrible sight to behold, and could instill fear in all but the bravest souls.

Like many ghosts, banshees were also capable of possessing mortal bodies at which point they could take control of it and replace their incorporeal forms with a solid guise. This extended even to corpses, and it was possible for a banshee to possess her own corpse so that she could more freely interact with the world around her.

Banshees that were spellcasters in life frequently retained their magical capability, though their magics were normally warped with death magic.

Farshees

Farshee (or fearshee) was simply the name given to the male equivalent of a banshee. Like their female counterparts, farshees were exclusively elven and had a similar appearance aside from their masculine identities.
