Imp Mothers were large, bulbous demons that were exclusively female in presentation. They were native demons to the Twisting Nether, and they were most known for being able to birth the much smaller imps from portals they created in their stomachs.
History
Very little was known about the origin and history of imp mothers as they did not seem to have an explicit homeworld and instead materialized all over the Twisting Nether, where they carved out their own spheres of influence. Despite the weakness of the imps they birthed, imp mothers could be incredibly powerful, and ultimately had a limitless expendable army at their disposal if they wished it.
The Burning Legion offered a new opportunity for imp mothers and many of them flocked (or were coerced) to Sargeras's cause, but independent imp mothers still operated across the nether.
Description
Imp mothers were large and bulbous creatures with horns on the top of their heads, squashed noses, fanged teeth, large claws, and hooves with a tail that were sometimes furred near the ends. They had bat-like wings that looked to be comically too small for their bodies, but they were still somehow capable of generating enough life to move their hulking forms. Their skin was largely leathery and covered in boils and scale patches. While they appeared to have breasts, they served no reproductive purpose, as their imp spawn were created fully-formed.
They were most known for their role in spawning lesser imps, which most described as their children. Imp mothers could range in attitude toward their spawn, though many of them had a harsh-but-saccharine disposition and took great offense if anything harmed them—while also shamelessly using them as expendable tools for their own agendas. Imp mothers were frequently victims to their own hubris and ambition, which could place them on the bad sides of more powerful demons, but their unique resources in the form of their imp children made them infamously difficult to permanently kill.
Abilities
Imp mothers did not reproduce naturally and instead harnessed their energies in order to spawn imps through isolated portals they opened in their stomachs. These imps emerged fully-formed and loyal to their mothers, though they ultimately possessed free will and it was not unheard of for imps to go rogue. Because imp mothers were not particularly mobile in their natural forms, they used their imps as eyes and ears as well as expendable soldiers to carry out their various schemes. Imp mothers were normally competent fel practitioners and could utilize powerful magics to further their goals. Because of the energy their hordes of imps took to create, they normally secured a heavily fel-infused region to operate from, where they proceeded to turn the fel energy into more children.
Powerful imp mothers were capable of shapeshifting, which they could use to great effect. Some disguised themselves as sayaad to make themselves more appealing to mortals, but their forms were virtually limitless as long as they maintained largely the same body type.
Imp mothers were capable of creating a specific type of imp known as an imp consort, which were larger and more bulbous than their brethren. Unlike other imps, these consorts served as pseudo-homunculi and were partial clones of their mother: they obeyed her every wish, served her in every way they were capable, and if the imp mother was destroyed, one of the consorts could mutate into an exact replacement. Truly killing an imp mother required killing all her consorts as well. They required a large amount of her essence to maintain, however, thus the number she could create was limited. Imp consorts could be consumed by their mothers in order to reconstitute the energy expended into them, and any memories it generated while apart from her were then assimilated into the mother.
Nearly all imps created by imp mothers were male. Females existed, but they normally did not stray far from the mother and instead served as food sources. They would scavenge for souls or other energy, grow larger, and then the mother would consume them to absorb what they had acquired. In the event an imp mother was successfully fully destroyed, these female imps could continue to amass power and become new imp mothers themselves.
