Jailers, or Jailer Demons, were a relatively new species of demon that were artificially created by rituals channeling the power of Sargeras. They were known for their mastery over soul manipulation, and they were primarily in charge of prisoners of the Burning Legion.
History
Jailers were a variety of artificial demon that were created through guided transmogrification using powers channeled from Sargeras. These rituals were performed almost exclusively by the asura, as they were amongst the most trusted adherents of Sargeras and could be relied upon to choose candidates that were suitable for the role. The rituals were performed almost exclusively on the prison world of Niskara, which also served as a home base for the chain of command jailers answered to.
Candidates were selected from both mortal and immortal alike, as becoming a jailer was a quick way to acquire a demonic soul for mortals, and also a means to ascend in notoriety and power amongst lesser demons. However, due to the specific role of jailers, the notoriety and power they could attain was ultimately limited. Because of their nature, jailers were exclusively loyal to the Burning Crusade. The cages jailers were noted to carry were similarly imbued by the asura that created them, and they were the source of much of the jailer's power.
Description
Jailer demons all possessed a sexless build that was specially designed to allow them to overpower and maintain prisoners. They had broad shoulders, large clawed hands, and bald heads with pronounced horns, a fanged maw, and a reptile-like nose. Long tendrils hung from their chins, which were normally worn tightly braided like a beard, and they lacked lower bodies—instead they hovered using fel energies in a manner similar to elemental djinn.
Jailers were not relieved of the memories of their lives before their transmutation, as any spite or grudge-holding was considered beneficial for their role as prison wardens and torturers. Some maintained aspects of their old identities, while others fashioned completely new ones using the anonymity that their new form required, but regardless of their prior lives, the process of becoming a jailer required loyalty and consent from those that would be transformed.
No matter the reason, jailers knew exactly what their role would be, and what they were signing up for.
Abilities
Jailers possessed an innate ability for soul manipulation that was channeled through the magical cages that they wore on their backs. These cages acted as a focus that heightened their abilities, and jailers bereft of their cages were notably weaker than those in the possession of them, which caused them to guard the vessel ruthlessly.
Organization
All jailers answered directly to a high jailor that was stationed on the planet of Niskara. The high jailor answered directly to the leadership of the Burning Legion and held a great deal of respect and notoriety. Due to the immortal nature of demons, the only time a high jailor was replaced was if the former was was permanently killed, or if they fell drastically out of favor and were then replaced.
