June 13th

As the sun rises, it’s quite warm; the only respite from the heat seems to be the scattered clouds overhead. Elissa is among the last ones to wake (as she normally is), and Tol’vas finds her packing up her things.

Elissa Cross says: Hey Tol’vas. How’d you sleep?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Eh. Not my preferred time.

Tol’vas shrugs. He sees Riff nearby.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Hey Riff, is one of those sensors around?
Riff says: Oh, not right now! They've popped up sometimes, but not right now.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Alright, thank you. Anyway, Elissa, just so you’re aware, your aunt is watching me.
Elissa Cross says: Oh. Um. I didn’t know that. You said you knew her, right? Kind of at least.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Her, uh, husband was one of the members of the circle I was a part of, and she also made the scythe.
Elissa Cross says: Oh wow. She must be pretty powerful, huh?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I know you said you wanted to meet her on your own terms, but with her watching, she might eventually notice you.

Elissa shrugs.

Elissa Cross says: I mean, if she did somehow find out who I was, it’s okay ultimately. I mostly just want to… I’m looking forward to meeting my mother, but I don’t know if she told anyone about me. So I wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t think she could piece together I was related, anyway. I wouldn’t be upset if I didn’t get to surprise my mom, but it’s just something I’d like to do someday. If we cross paths with her.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Mm. That would not be as difficult to do as you think.
Elissa Cross says: Crossing paths with her?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Finding her.
Elissa Cross says: Well, if it happens it happens. There are more important things to focus on.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Is this something you want to happen?
Elissa Cross says: Well, yeah, but there are important things to do. The last thing we need to do is set up meetings with a bunch of priestesses, so I can wait, it’s not a problem. I spent most of my life not knowing my mom anyway. But I’m sure our paths will cross someday, somewhere.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Well, I could help you contact your aunt if you want.
Elissa Cross says: Maybe in time… but I don’t know if I… it might be awkward if I tell her she’s my aunt and she doesn’t know about me? I don’t want to get my mom in trouble. As funny as that might be, it might be better if I contact my mom first, and also to make sure it’s the right one… but I mean, there could be other elves with the last name Starbreeze, right?
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: There aren’t quite as many kaldorei as you’d think.

Elissa chuckles softly.

Elissa Cross says: I appreciate the offer though. Once we figure all this out, and clear the air between your people and Remnii’s people, I’d like to meet her before we go back to the Eastern Kingdoms at least. So if I can’t find her by then, maybe I’ll take you up on that.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Alright. Well that’s all I wanted to say for now.
Elissa Cross says: Well, thank you! And I might need to count on you to introduce me to Miss Belysra eventually, so thank you. I hope she’s nice!
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: She cares a lot.
Elissa Cross says: I’m glad to hear that.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: And she isn’t coming directly here to take the scythe from me.
Elissa Cross says: That’s good too. We’d all be in trouble in that case…
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: She wants to see how this plays out.
Elissa Cross says: Well, if you need help, let me know? We should put on a good show.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: That means a lot.

Elissa glances over in Vel’s direction.

Elissa Cross says: I know you and Vel have had a few fights and stuff… but she’s a good person, even if she’s rough around the edges sometimes.

Tol’vas’s expression goes neutral.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I’ve been around enough highborne. I understand.
Elissa Cross says: Well. We should get ready to go, right? Thanks again.

Elissa pats Tol’vas’s arm and goes back to work on packing her things up.

Seria and Tol’vas once again cast wind walk, and they take off into the air once more after Remnii once again casts find the path. The group flies over scarce trees and other tributaries, as well as thickets of brambles and low mesas. They soar over a wide river, the sun glinting over crystalline blue water--it’s the Southfury River, which had shared its name with the headland. As they pass over it, they now see a sea of bright red stone

They opt to land for a brief break on the other side of the river.

When they take off again, they soar cacti and more red earth that rises in tall, jagged peaks. Down below, the peaks open into a wide valley, which is likely the Scorched Basin. Remnii’s find the path spell seems to be pointing towards the northwestern edge of the basin.

They land, but there doesn’t seem to be anything notable at first. However, Seria spots three pairs of footprints that seem to lead to a narrow, ridge pathway. One set is a large set of humanoid ones, and two that indicate large wolves. It was likely the path Thrud and her wolves had followed.

One by one, the group shimmeys across a narrow ledge. Elissa almost slips, but Uther is able to grab her before she completely loses her balance. As they look down, they can see the Southfury River flow by the basin a few hundred feet down. Tol’vas had changed into a large wolf spider to navigate easily.

Slowly, the path widens, and they start to see markings in a language no one understands, but they are purposeful. However, as they start to approach, it gets increasingly warmer, almost unbearably so. Seria wild shapes into a incendosaur so she doesn’t need to deal with it.

Riff seems to be struggling, but the rest of the group is, for the most part, dealing with it as well as they could be.

They arrive on a mesa, and they see a stone carved with intricate runes on it. Leaning against a nearby stone--her armor also stripped off and down to her small clothes--is the towering figure of Thrud and her two large thunder wolves laying on their sides, panting in the heat.

Thrud’s head lifts, and there is a small smile as she stands to greet the group.

Thrud says: Well. You all made quite quick time. I’m more than a bit surprised to see ya here so quickly.
Uther Menethil says: Quickly? We had quite a few stops between! ...Right, the cloud travel.

Thrud smirks.

Thrud says: I had places to stop as well, but you all made quite quick time finding your way here. Thank you for your haste, it will make this easier to accomplish. I trust you did not have too much trouble finding your way here?
Uther Menethil says: Not really. The locals were helpful!
Thrud says: That is good. Well. I suppose, as I promised, some explanations are in order. My reasons for bringing you here and seeking your assistance… there are perhaps, where does one even start with this…

Thrud gestures for the group to follow her to the shade her wolves are still lounging in. Thrud sits down and takes a drink from her water skin. Her water skin is nearly the size of a barrel in comparison, but she drinks from it as easily as anyone would drink from one.

Thrud says: First some… history, I suppose. In ancient times, well before the kingdoms and peoples of this world rose to power, fell, and rose again, the world was shrouded in darkness. Old gods, powerful beings from beyond the stars, choked life on this world, and at their beck and call were the lords of the elements. A long, long time ago there were those who rose against the dark gods. Before the world looked as it did today. Great giants forged by the titans, the shapers of the cosmos, they were numerous in number, and they created armies to face the legions commanded by the old gods. My father was one of those giants.

Thrud takes another drink.

Thrud says: He is an ancient being. Significantly older than I am. And he has watched over this world for a very long time. That is… in the recent centuries, something has happened. A… lethargy that has fallen over my father and his companions. The giants that watch the world from the edge. And in this complacency has come conflict, and in that conflict, many lives were taken. My mother was one of them. I… as you could imagine, my father did not take this news well. He slipped into a deep and dark place. This…

She raises her hammer.

Thrud says: This was created for me by my father many years ago, but this is only a fraction of the strength he wields. His weapon is a great maul by the name of Krolmir, and after he shouted his despair on the wind, he cast the weapon from the highest peaks of his domains. The weapon is great. And it can only be wielded by those who are worthy and have the strength to do so, and I have been unable to accomplish this. I have to prove to my father, and to his creations, that I am worthy of the blood of the vanir in my veins. And that brings us here. To where I now seek your help. My father, his name is Thorim, he is called the Lord of Thunder, the Lord of the Storms. So I seek to claim power equal to his own, so I might prove to his creations that I am worthy, and that worthiness may stir my father’s heart once more, so he may rise from his stupor and his dark place. There is a being. One younger than the war that had scattered the elements to the far plane, an entity of storms. An entity of the sky. But… after their defeat by the giants, the elementals were scattered and imprisoned, and they fought amongst themselves. The being whose council I seek is a great elemental with the title of the Windseeker, a being known as Prince Thunderaan, but eons ago, he was struck down and his essence scattered and imprisoned. This was done by an entity known as the Firelord, Ragnaros, one of the greatest and most terrible generals of the old gods. Together with his most trusted and vile advisors, he bound Prince Thunderaan so he might not reform, and his power could be wielded by the Firelord and his minions. I seek to draw those entities here to slay them, and retrieve the bindings so we can bring the Windseeker here. Perhaps in gratitude, he will grant me his blessing. That is what brings us here, to this place charged with the elemental plane of fire. We may be able to draw the entities here, but it will not be simple, and I will need your strength at my side if I am to conquer them.

Thrud smiles.

Thrud says: I trust you might have questions, and I will answer them if I can.
Uther Menethil says: Well. That is certainly a lot to take in. So much so I’m having trouble deciding what needs clarification…
Thrud says: I apologize. And I am sorry I cannot provide more, I only know what I was taught by my mother.
Uther Menethil says: Do not worry about that! As I don’t have time to explain how much your quest resonates with me, but… that’s… at the very least, we will help you however we can, and at the risk of sounding overconfident, my friends and I make a habit out of achieving the impossible.
Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I have a question. Where were your people 10,000 years ago?
Thrud says: You speak of the war… my mother, in this tongue, is a vrykul. And I know many of them slumber deep within their halls of valor and strength. I have not been back to my home for some time. I did not live amongst many of my kind. But I cannot say. I have never had the opportunity to be exceptionally close with my father, so I cannot tell you, but perhaps if I am able to save him from the darkness of his mind, perhaps he can tell you himself. He or one of his brothers and sisters.

Tol’vas nods.

Velameestra Windrunner says: This… Prince Thunderaan, he was an enemy of these old gods, yes? He would not seek to cause harm if he was freed, would he?
Thrud says: I have studied this entity. It is honorable, and has a grace and dignity unfound in others of his kind. But if this turns to be false, if these tales were laid to fool someone like me to release him, I will rectify that mistake. But as fickle as the spirits of the winds and storms are, I believe this is the right thing to do. The entities we must face here are known as Baron Geddon, and General Garr. They are capricious elements of which I know little, beyond that they fought alongside Ragnaros, but Thunderaan was made after the war, after the control of these ancient gods were lifted from the elements. To put it frankly, I plan to receive his blessing, but if he refuses, or he poses a threat to this world, I will fulfill my obligation and that of the blood in veins to ensure he does not threaten the world I am to protect, and my father is to protect. But that thought had crossed my mind as well, and I am glad you thought it too.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I can at least respect that amount of foresight.

Thrud nods.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: Alright. So what exactly are we doing?
Thrud says: There are two times we can go about this, and each one brings different challenges. Should we draw them under the cover of darkness, the heat emitted from the ritual will be more tolerable, but it will be dark. And the moon is nearing its new cycle. I know many of the entities we face are beings of fire, so I believe we will be able to see them in the dark regardless, but it will be more difficult for those who are not adapted to seeing in such conditions. Myself included. I…

Thrud looks about the group, specifically at the humans.

Thrud says: I believe you may have similar issues if I am not mistaken. When we perform this, it will be up to you all.

She reaches into her satchel and withdraws a scroll.

Thrud says: This will help us accomplish what we need. When the time comes I will do what I can to attempt to utilize this magic to tear open the gate and draw these entities forward. I have not done so before, but I suppose I will have to try. If I fail, then I suppose it’s back to square one.

Vel inclines her head slightly, recognizing what is very clearly a spell scroll.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Does… it have to be specifically you that uses the scroll?

Thrud’s brow furrows.

Thrud says: I do not believe so, but it is scribed in an ancient language… I do not know if any of you would be able to decipher it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: There are magics capable of doing so. Do you mind if I see?

Thrud nods and hands over the scroll, which Vel unfurls to take a look. To her surprise, she can actually read it, as the text is in a script similar to the one that had been present in the information controls at the Tower of Ilgalar--which she had been working on deciphering after it had been functionally beamed into her mind.

She blinks.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Oh. Um. I can actually read this, as it turns out…

Thrud blinks several times in surprise.

Thrud says: You… can read the tongue of the Makers?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I didn’t know what it was called… but yes, it appears so. We had prior dealings with some ancient towers, which was where I was first exposed to it.

Thrud nods.

Thrud says: The language of the titans is old, and I am not surprised to hear you have encountered some of their ruins and devices from whence you have come. If you believe you could do it… I would gladly relinquish this duty to you. You are clearly gifted in magic, and would undoubtedly be better at accomplishing this.

As Vel reads the scroll, she notes it’s a specifically tuned gate scroll. It will only summon the two individuals in question: Baron Geddon and General Garr. It also had to be used at a place attuned to the elemental plane of fire, such as this one. It’s also not concentration, meaning the gate could not simply be closed by dropping one’s focus. It would remain open for the entire duration, or until dispelled.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Well… another potential problem. This gate will be open for a full minute and serve as a direct path to the plane of fire. Meaning it’s going to just be an open hole that anything can walk through.

Thrud chews on her finger as she thinks.

Thrud says: I can… see how that may be a problem. Is there a way to close the portal once it’s open and we have drawn the two beings we seek through it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ordinarily, you would just drop concentration on the spell, but that’s not possible with this one. It could just be dispelled…

Thrud nods and Tae’shara pipes up.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I mean, I think we could probably handle that, right? If we split up into two groups, one of them can focus on keeping as many things as we can from escaping and closing the gate, and the others can focus on taking down this Geddon and Garr, right? That shouldn’t be too hard.

Thrud nods.

Thrud says: That seems like a sound strategy. Once the portal has been opened, and they have been drawn through, we can dispatch the others that escape, and close the portal as quickly as we can. From there, we can collect the bindings and move forward in the next stage of releasing the Windseeker from his prison.
Velameestra Windrunner says: If I can ask, where did you get this?
Thrud says: I was able to barter for the process of creating it. From a hermit living in these mountains. The tauren locals call her an Oracle.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Well. Confirmation she exists then…
Thrud says: She resides in the mountains south of this basin we are near.
Remnii says: We were told about her, though she is believed to be a myth.
Thrud says: She is real. I don’t know what she is doing here or who she is, but I sought her out for guidance on how to accomplish this, and I was grateful she was able to offer what she could.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Then I suppose it’s just a matter of deciding when we want to do this. Which that is likely better up to those who would be disadvantaged by the… night time situation.
Uther Menethil says: You can say me.

Everyone looks to the humans.

Tol'vas Moonshadow says: I would like to point out that if things are on fire there probably will not be problems with seeing them.

Uther points at Tol’vas.

Velameestra Windrunner says: Night it is then. Then I suppose we should rest and prepare as best we can.

The group settles in to prepare, and as the day wears on into evening, the prepare to face what is to come and pre-buff as many spells as they can. Tol’vas summons a winter wolf as well, using the scythe. Remnii casts magic circle, tracing a circle in the dirt with her staff, and her magic flows into the circle, filling it with molten gold light.

Thrud says: Are we ready?
Uther Menethil says: Light protect us.

Thrud raises her hammer and nods in Vel’s direction. Vel pulls out the scroll and begins the incantations. Her eyes shine with magic as she focuses her energy through the scroll. There was no way in hell she was going to let this not work, as it was far too important.

The words echo in titanic, her hair whipping around her face, and the letters in the scroll burn bright hot, and the letters on the scroll melt as if exposed to fire. All the runes start to glow as the magic tripes into the arch. In a spiral formation, a portal rips over, and streaks of fire and sparks come spurting through. Two huge elementals are pulled through the portal--one an amorphous figure of fire, and one a moving pyroclastic flow with two bright burning eyes atop a shifting body of magma. They are massive. As the second one pulls through, the faithful hound that Tol’vas had summoned bites and snarls, and there is a wash of fire as more elementals pour out from behind it.

The entities look at the group and say something in a language they don’t understand. They laugh, and Garr punches his fists together. It seems the wounds that had appeared on Garr subside slightly, and some appear on Geddon.

As soon as they appear, Vel casts slow, the spectral, icy chains wrapping around both Geddon and Garr as well as two other lesser elementals. Geddon takes immediately, but Vel keeps pushing against Garr until they fully take. She then draws her sword and starts her bladesong.

Thrud immediately runs forward and casts chain lightning, the crackling lightning shooting between Geddon and Garr and several of the smaller elementals. A lesser fire elemental swings at Hati, who rolls aside and dodges.

Geddon starts to surge towards the circle and tries to pass through the group inside it, but he is unable to enter. He curses in primordial and stalks around the edge.

Uther swings at Baron Geddon, but the elemental surges out of the way of the first strike. The second strike connects, a surge of holy light washing over Geddon, but it seems to do less damage as some golden wounds appear on Garr as well.

Tol’vas’s faithful hound bites another elemental, and Tol’vas himself uses gravity sinkhole. Garr doesn’t move, but the two lesser elementals get pulled into the center of the sinkhole and crash together. Tol’vas then summons a wolf totem in the middle of the magic circle.

A lesser fire elemental flows through Thrud, and Skoll howls and shoots a blast of lightning another lesser elemental.

Garr moves in on Hati and Seria and slams its arms on the ground. The earth begins to rupture and fissure as magma bubbles up from the ground. It roils up and strikes everyone in the area, filling it with molten light. Vel staggers, unable to maintain her concentration on the slow.

Thrud is starting to get dogpiled by elementals, but her eyes flash as one of them hits, and it is blasted with lightning and sent sailing back.

Elissa Cross says: Should I go help her?
Remnii says: I worry if you don’t!

Elissa moves out of the magic circle and uses all her lay on hands on Thrud, and then quickens a protection from energy on Thrud. The winter wolf closes on Geddon and bites, and it yelps as it takes fire damage.

An earth elemental tries to strike Uther, but is unable to connect through the barrier of the magic circle.

Seria turns into an incendosaur again and she tries to bite Garr, but is unable to connect. A fire elemental tries to connect with Seria with a flaming fist, but she is now immune to fire. It gurgles angrily at her.

A lava elemental gurgles into the ground and reappears near Hati.

Remnii uses mass flash of light to heal several of her allies, and she rounds on the nearest elemental. The light immediately fades from her eyes to be replaced with shadow as she uses mind sliver. It jerks, its mind fried with shadow and holy magic, and it disappears in a burst of flame, its bracers hitting the ground.

An earth elemental burrows under Seria and materializes behind her, next to Vel. A fist appears under the ground and tries to deck Seria in the face, but she only takes the bludgeoning damage.

Tol’vas shifts into his worgen form, and then uses roar. An earth elemental strikes at Uther, but his ice barrier flickers and impales the stony creature, and it crumples to dust.

Vel takes a few steps forward and casts steel wind strike, and she materializes behind Garr, Geddon, and several other elementals, slashing through nearly all of them with an arcane strike before she rematerializes next to Uther and flips her blade into a reverse grip.

Seria attempts to bite into Garr, but her teeth scrape against him, unable to get purchase.

The earth elemental next to Seria and Remnii spins around, smacking both of them.

Baron Geddon swings at Uther and Thrud, and manages to hit Thrud, but Uther smashes the blow away with his hammer.

The battle continues to rage on. Skoll retreats a bit, and Remnii once more casts mass flash of light and once more uses mind sliver on the nearby earth elemental.

Remnii says: Seria, if you can get in here!

A fire elemental connects with Thrud, but she laughs as the damage washes over her.

Uther smashes into Baron Geddon with his hammer, and holy light flashes as he smites. He winds up again and swings a second time with a prayer to the light before bringing the hammer down with another brilliant, holy smite.

Baron Geddon says: One… last… service… for lord Ragnaros!!!

Fire washes out from him as he shreds his chest open in a massive explosion. The winter wolf disappears in the blast, and Remnii drops to the ground. Geddon disappears, but his bracers drop to the ground.

Uther then runs over to Remnii and quickens a cure wounds.

Remnii says: Thank you, Uther!
Uther Menethil says: Anytime! We’re not done here yet.

Uther grabs Remnii to steady her.

A fire elemental flows through Thrud, but Elissa bats it aside as it tries to strike the massive woman.

Garr slams his fist into the earth, and the earth begins to crack and move beneath the group. A fissure opens, but Vel and Tol’vas are able to grab onto the edge and prevent themselves from falling. Remnii and Uther, however, tumble down into the newly torn chasm.

Garr roils forward toward Vel, but Vel looks back towards the fissure and dives for it, running down the wall. She jumps the last bit, landing hard, but she grabs both Uther and Remnii and uses an upcasted dimension door to teleport all three of them back to the surface, safely on the other side of the magic circle.

Tae’shara runs off from the side and flips her hand.

Tae'shara Sunwatcher says: I got an opening!

She fires off a dispel magic, struggling to close the portal as more elementals pour through. She twists her hand with a shout, and the portal slams shut.

She gives the group a thumbs up, and then turns around and flings a spell at another elemental.

Uther Menethil says: Much obliged, Vel!

Uther puts all his lay on hands into Remnii, and she once again comes to, still held by Uther. Remnii puts a hand on his arm and nods, still very dazed and unsure of what happened, but she continues off Uther's compliment to Vel.

Remnii says: Good jobbb!

Uther then hurls a hammer of wrath at the earth elemental nearby, seeing Seria is surrounded. The hammer cracks into the earth elemental’s back, flashes with bright light, and then reappears in his hand.

Elissa Cross says: Sorry Thrud!

Elissa drops her concentration on protection from energy and instead casts aura of vitality and then heals herself. Skoll crunches the nearby earth elemental into dust, and then it claws at the lava elemental--the thunder damage of the strike causing thick chunks of lava to explode off.

Seria bites General Garr, unphased by the fire damage.

Tol’vas uses gravity sinkhole again, and the sinkhole explodes an earth elemental, and the fire elemental is then slammed into the invisible barrier around the magic circle. He then casts shillelagh.

Garr burrows under the earth and appears behind Skoll. His hands form into large balls of molten magma. He hurls them at Uther, and the first one goes wide, but the second one connects and sends him dropping to the ground. Both strikes explode into burning molten fire, burning Remnii and Vel.

Remnii uses mass cure wounds, healing all her allies within range with a wave of holy energy.

Remnii says: Come on, Uther, that’s not fair!

Hati brings his claw up and slashes through the lava elemental, breaking it to bits. He then closes on General Garr and bites into him.

Elissa is back in critical condition as several lesser elementals swarm around her. Thrud puts a hand on her shoulder and smiles, and then they disappear in a crack of thunder. They reappear behind Uther, Vel, and Remnii as the elementals are left somewhat stunned.

The remaining fire elemental surges by Vel, setting her clothing alight. Tol’vas smacks it with his scythe. The fire elemental then hits Uther with its fist. Hati runs at Garr and tries to bite him, but Garr smacks him aside, and some elementals swarm on him--effectively removing him from the midst of the battle.

Thrud manages to finish off the fire elemental with two swings of her hammer.

Thrud says: Alright! We just need to clean up now!

Garr closes on the group, stepping over the fissure. He swings down on Uther with his magma fists. Uther drops, but the remnants of his shield deflects the second blow aside. A lesser fire elemental swings at Vel, who is still on the ground.

Seria scurries around and bites Garr.

Another elemental surges on Remnii, setting her on fire. Tol’vas casts swiftmend on Uther to get him up again, and then closes on Garr to try and hit him. The scythe of elune carves into him, and it seems stuck for a moment, but then he wrenches it out.

Vel gets to her feet and twists her blade into a reverse grip, fire still flickering on her armor.

Velameestra Windrunner says: I’ve had about enough of this.

Arcane magic crackles around her blade and she disappears, materializing around all the remaining enemies as she drives her reversed blade into their backs. She fully materializes on Garr’s back, steam from the heat of the lava combined with her ambient chill swirling around her as her eyes blaze a bright magenta surrounded with crackling, arcane blue. Garr shudders, the arcane energy of the blade driving the sword deep, before he freezes over and crumbles beneath her. Two of the other fire elementals also shudder and collapse, leaving only one more alive, which runs for Remnii.

It misses both strikes.

Remnii says: No, enough!

Remnii’s eyes go dark as she blasts the remaining fire elemental with mind sliver, causing it to shatter and its head to go sailing, as the rest of their companions finish the remaining swarm.
