Satyr

Satyrs were a type of goat-like, bestial demon that were usually sworn to the Burning Legion. Unlike many other demons, they were specifically created through the spread of the satyr curse (Darnassian: Satyr'Felora), an affliction that originated with the original satyr, Xavius. There are only several thousand satyr in existence.

Description

Satyrs were warped images of their former selves and were based on the form inflicted on the first satyr, Xavius, by the dark titan Sargeras. Once an individual was transformed into a satyr they acquired an immortal demon soul and the ability to reform in the Twisting Nether if they were killed on the material plane. While they had the upper halves of their former selves, their lower halves were that of goats, and they sprouted large horns and typically grew extra hair and fur all over their bodies, which grew at an expedited rate. If a satyr cut their hair, it typically was back to the length it formerly was in scarcely more than a week or two.

Satyrs were innate corruptors and their presence corrupted the lands around them, which meant that long-term satyr activity was typically accompanied by fel-warped lands around their sects. This corruption is enhanced exponentially in realms particularly susceptible to it, such as the Emerald Dream. All satyrs have been banished from the Dream because of this and are incapable of dreaming. New satyrs can only be created by existing satyrs, and it required the targeted mortal to willingly choose to accept the curse. Because of the need of a willing recipient, satyrs are prone to using trickery, coercion, and deception to convince their targets.

A satyr's personality is also twisted by the curse, tending to exaggerate their strongest traits and suppressing empathy. At the core of the curse is the urge to follow one's deepest desires with complete disregard for consequences. Satyrs have the ability to temporarily inflict this trait on their victims with a touch.

Due to their close proximity and connection to night elves, the majority of satyrs were born of the highborne kaldorei, but the curse itself could be inflicted on any being that chose to accept it. Because the Elunite religion has taboo against the transformation of the female body, 95% of satyr are male. Most satyrs are afraid of incurring the wrath of Elune and refuse to inflict the curse on a female kaldorei, while most female kaldorei would rather die then be subject to the curse.

Sects

Satyrs were divided into groups known as sects which were normally organized into specific localized areas. The goals of each individual sect varied, but the majority sought to spread their corruption.

Castes

Satyrs further divide themselves into castes based on their magical abilities.

The sixth and highest caste is known as a Praetor of the Emerald Flame. A satyr is only eligible to become one once they've mastered the magics of all five of the other castes.
