Ghouls were undead creatures that were primarily known for their ravenous desire to consume flesh, particularly that of humanoids. They were resilient creatures, and they could replenish their health by devouring the flesh they so craved.

History

Ghouls existed in some capacity for as long as necromancy was known to be used, though an outbreak of a more concentrated number of them emerged following the undead plague outbreak triggered by Heigan Capless and his Cult of the Damned in Andorhal in October of year 633. Ghouls were one of the many varieties of undead that emerged from the afflicted humans, including those who were summarily "awakened" by the efforts of Velameestra Windrunner.

Description

The appearance of a ghoul could vary significantly, as the degradation of their appearance was frequently based on their lucidity and the length of time they had spent in a crazed, feral state. Those who had not degraded maintained a relatively humanoid appearance, though their bodies still showed signs of decay and they had pronounced, fang-like teeth, extended claws, and an uncharacteristically long tongue.

Over time, degraded, mindless ghouls would become far more bent and twisted. A great deal of their flesh would rot away, exposing a fair amount of bone, and further distorting their facial features until they were almost unrecognizable as human due to their overly large mouths filled with jagged fangs and their lack of a nose. Some still retained manes of shaggy, decaying hair, but their limbs became elongated and ended in large, terrible claws. Feral ghouls were also prone to hunt in packs, which could result in entire hordes of ravenous undead washing over unexpecting prey.

Regardless of their state, ghouls had supernatural, wiry strength that allowed them to rip into flesh and break bone with ease.

Abilities

While an individual ghoul could be dealt with without much issue if someone was prepared, they could actively heal through the consumption of flesh, which made hordes of them particularly dangerous as any targets they were able to slay would just replenish their own vitality and stamina.
