Wisps are incorporeal undead that appeared as motes of light that appear much like a disembodied elven head upon closer inspection.

History

In ancient times, the wandering fae spirit Aessina took great interest in the dark trolls that worshiped her beloved Elune and the wilds. She desired to grant them the gift to continuing Elune's mission even after death, but great spirits already watched over all troll souls. This changed when the god of the Blue Moon led a tribe of dark trolls to the Well of Eternity, who were then transformed by its waters into something entirely new. To Aessina's joy, their love for Elune had only grown in their transformation. Thus, Aessina struck a deal with her aunt, the Winter Queen, that those willing could receive a boon in death. Following this arrangement, wisps began to appear in the forests of Azeroth.

Prior to the sundering, myth explained wisps as the spirit of kaldorei that had returned to the living world as stars to watch over the living. Following the Sundering, this myth was dismissed as hubris and currently it is uncommon for the kaldorei to understand the true nature of the wisps.

Description

A wisp cannot speak, at least not without magic to aid them, instead communicating through low humming.

Transformation

To meet the criteria for becoming a wisp, a kaldorei must have both loyally revered Elune in life and in death find their rest in Ardenweald. The soul must also have a desire to continue to serve Elune and protect the Wilds just as strong, or stronger, then their desire to return to those they love. Additionally, the soul can only undergo the transformation into a wisp and return to the material plane during the spring or autumn equinox, though there is a lot more time to undergo the process in the autumn when the vale is thin.

The soul's head is removed from their body and becomes the wisp. As such, the wisp is usually only a fraction of the kaldorei's total soul- primarily their devotion.

The remaining body transforms into a tree, bush, or flower that rests in a garden in Ardenweald. This garden is part of a temple to Elune created and maintained by Aessina, Haidene, and other adherents to continue to worship their goddess.

Abilities

Wisps are known to to make plants grow and mold wood into nearly any form. They can be summoned by druids to bolster their powers, and can sacrifice themselves to explode and banish enemies.

A particularly powerful wisp can bind itself to a tree or other plant, or use their power to quicken the growth of an ancient.
