Vereesa looked at the group and then back to Lirath and Esara.
Vereesa Windrunner says: Rhonin told me about what happened… we can fill you in, but I presume you’re not here for a family reunion?
Kael’thas nodded.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Indeed, we’ve actually returned because we need to have a discussion with the other members of the Convocation that are here. Who is present?
Vereesa Windrunner says: The Ranger-General and Commander Lor’themar are both present.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Very good, they are the ones I need to talk to the most given recent circumstances. Would you be able to inform them of our arrival?
Vereesa nodded and set off to do so as Kael looked at Vel and Esara.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Miss Verrinde, if you would be so kind, I understand Kilnar is not present, but if you would be willing to stand in her place, I believe your input would be quite valuable. Vel will be present too and can you fill in on things you have missed.
Esara nodded and looked over to Vel. She asked if she had seen Kilnar then, and Vel confirmed that one of her simulacrums was actually with her on her expedition to the Broken Isles. Esara admitted she had spoken to Finnall as someone had brought news to her about her mother, though she was relieved Kilnar was alright and admitted she shouldn’t have been surprised that Kilnar had known Vel was still active. Vel explained that they had actually run into Kilnar in Kalimdor, the continent across the ocean, and Esara mused it was good that Kilnar had managed to find it, and so, it seemed, did Vel.
Lirath Windrunner says: The important thing now is that you’re here. I’m sure there will be time to share all the stories that have taken place but… it’s good you’re all back.
Lirath looked at Uther, having figured out who was who.
Lirath Windrunner says: I’m certain your own parents would be glad to see you’re back… we just found out Queen Jaina is returned. Does she know you’re alright?
Uther Menethil says: That she does!
Relief passed over Lirath’s face. Vel gave Esara some quick notes about things that have happened, and Lirath approached Gil and asked if the business with the dragons had been alright.
Gil said things were more complicated than he wanted it to be, and he offered a small smile.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: There is more at play than I thought there would be.
Lirath nodded and said that if there was anything he could do to help, the last thing he wanted was for Gil to conceal his identity from his family. Gil said he thought that ship sailed today, as there was no putting his presence back in the bottle.
Lirath Windrunner says: No matter what happens, I’m going to be there for you, alright?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: I know. And honestly that itself helps so much.
Lirath Windrunner says: I hope my old bow has been treating you well.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: It has. The enchantment on it… is shockingly useful.
Lirath Windrunner says: Well, it looks like you got a few more enchantments in the meantime.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: It’s been a journey, I can say that.
Lirath Windrunner says: I look forward to hearing about it.
As Vel was explaining things to Esara, she noticed that she was wearing a ring that she had not been wearing before. Esara commented that it seemed that Vel had been more than keeping up on her bladesinging training, and Vel admitted she had ample time to practice, though she was grateful for the foundation Esara had given her. Esara noted Vel didn’t seem to have a sword on her, and Vel replied that it was currently with a friend getting an enchantment transferred to it.
Esara Verrinde says: So… you’re a vampyr now, huh?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yeah.
Esara Verrinde says: I guess all those rumors were true after all… I had a feeling they probably were.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It still depends on which rumors, given how stories are wont to go. But baseline, yes. Kilnar also knows.
Esara Verrinde says: Yeah, I figured. How… how many are there, you think?
Velameestra Windrunner says: A not insignificant number.
Esara Verrinde says: …shit.
Vel explained that they had been working on a menagerie of different things, and the expedition up north had offered a great many opportunities. Esara admitted that was good, though she wasn’t sure what to do with everything yet, but she knew that was what they were going to discuss at the meeting. Vel nodded, and said that ultimately a lot of things had shifted, even in Lordaeron’s lands.
Esara said they had heard about the necropolis that had been spewing bile, as the scouts had seen it. Vel relayed some of their own people were currently out investigating the damage, but it was ultimately not as bad as it could have been. Esara nodded, and Vel noticed her fiddling with the ring as she said they ultimately would have to figure things out. Vel’s eyes flickered to the ring, having clearly clocked it, but she ultimately chose not to bring it up at the moment.
They spoke a bit about which of the Lordanes were present, and Ashwynn had ultimately taken command, and Marwyn and ser Benjamin Warde were both at the Bulwark with her. The fighting had been effectively at a stalemate for the last month with the weather closing in. There were also a handful of representatives from other nations, like Stromic troops, and there were a fair number of Alterac forces present, but Gil was able to note that none of them seemed to be disguised draconic creatures.
Vereesa returned and informed them that Sylvanas and Lor’themar were ready to see them, and she also looked over at Alleria. A small conversation happened between them as it became clear that Vereesa had told Sylvanas Alleria was also there. Vereesa took Alleria’s hand, and then smiled over at Vel and wished her good luck.
Vel, Esara, Kael’thas, and Rommath headed toward the sin’dorei camp. All the attention was on Kael’thas and Rommath as whispers spread through the camp. He expressed that he hoped they would all be willing to smile and wave at him once everything came out, and Vel said that all they could do is see what the conversation brought. Kael agreed, but he got a distant expression that she knew all too well.
As they approached the central command camp, it became clear it was effectively an outpost. There were arcane golems present as well as a very large number of military forces. Two spellbreakers bowed their heads to Kael’thas and expressed that the Eternal Sun blessed them that day for bringing them among them. Kael’thas said he was glad to be among his people again, and they all stepped into the tent.
At the center of the tent was a map of the greater Eastweald area. There were a handful of markers, including one that clearly indicated Naxxramas. Standing before it was Lor’themar Theron, his damaged eye fully uncovered and his hands were splayed out on the map. He looked up at the group as they entered, and nearby was Sylvanas Windrunner, her arms crossed as she regarded them all with a narrow gaze.
Lor’themar offered a small smile.
Lor'themar Theron says: Welcome back, your Majesty. And Grand Magister as well. It is good to have you back on the mainland. I trust everything has gone well up in the Northrend expedition?
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: It has, and that is one of the reasons I have returned to beg an audience with the two of you. Much and more has taken place over the last year, and I believe it is time for us to discuss certain matters.
Lor’themar’s brow furrowed.
Lor'themar Theron says: Of course, your Majesty. But…
His gaze turned to Vel.
Lor'themar Theron says: You’ll forgive me if I ask for an introduction first and foremost. Lady Verrinde, it’s a pleasure to see you. I presume you are standing in on behalf of Magistrix Goldensword, but have we had the privilege of being introduced?
Vel glanced over at Kael’thas, who gave her a small nod and a smile.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We have before, commander.
She reached up to remove the visor mask from her face. Sylvanas’s eyes widened.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Velameestra? You’re alive?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ranger-General. As his Majesty said, a lot has occurred.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: So I see.
The barest hint of a smile touched her lips.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Well. I suppose there’s no sense in beating around the bush.
The smile quickly faded.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I presume this has to do with the rumors pertaining to our people?
Kael’thas nodded.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: That is one of the things we must speak of. As I’m certain you’ve been able to surmise, Ranger-General, those rumors are not without merit.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Is that so?
Kael’thas nodded.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: In fact, a great many of our people may attest to that. When the Grand Magister and I were trapped within the ban’dinoriel, circumstances led us towards investigating an anomaly in southern Quel’Thalas. I’m certain you heard reports, indeed some of those who were present during the incident… I would be surprised if they went un-interviewed by you. We came face-to-face with a powerful demon, and were it not for the quick thinking of General Duskseeker, none of us would be standing here today, myself included. But the fact I am standing is not a testament to the fact I survived the ordeal.
Lor’themar furrowed his brow.
Lor'themar Theron says: Your Majesty, are you saying…?
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Yes. I was killed, and General Duskseeker brought me back from the grave, but not as a mortal elf. I became the first of the san’layn. Vampyrs, out of the stories. There are many others who followed in my footsteps.
Sylvanas looked at Vel.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I see…
Vel returned her gaze, clearly confirming her suspicions.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: How far spread is this condition, your Majesty?
Kael’thas offered a sad smile.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Much further than I wish it was. A lot of our people fell in the attack, and while not all of us still walk amongst the living, there are many more of us than even I know how to put into words, and certainly more than would make our neighbors comfortable. We are not just vampyrs either. The dead walk amongst the living in many and more varieties, Ranger-General.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Thus the Scarlet Crusade’s ammunition grows more secure. Do you know how often they have been sniffing around here? Looking for evidence of the exact thing you say is now the case? What do you think they will do to us if they learn half our leadership were walking corpses. Do you think their wrath will end with you? They have already begun a witch hunt.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The witch hunt will be directed at their own people as well. Not just us. Lordaeron is being faced with the same dilemma.
Lor'themar Theron says: We’ve heard the reports. A few of the Ranger-General’s people have only just returned with the situation in Andorhal, and we are trying to find out more information about an anomaly in the Eastweald.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The necropolis of Naxxramas.
Lor'themar Theron says: You know of it?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Myself, his Majesty, and the Grand Magister are among those responsible for taking it down. It was partially funded by leadership of the Crusade.
Sylvanas furrowed her brow.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Are you certain?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I have proof, Ranger-General.
She produced the manifesto that had been stolen from the warehouse and slid it across the map on the table.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It also includes several Lordane nobility.
Sylvanas’s expression was completely neutral as she looked at the manifesto, but as she passed it to Lor’themar his face soured.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The Crusade exists on the back of a narrative they themselves are constructing.
Lor'themar Theron says: Some of these names have outstretched their hands in succor to our people. Why would..? This warrants further investigation. If they seek to entrap or subjugate our people…
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I believe that is exactly what they are doing, Lor’themar.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: Indeed. If they suspect that some amongst us are their targets, they are likely offering charity to identify who is and is not involved.
Velameestra Windrunner says: They are turning on their own as well. General Taelan Fordring, one of their own leadership, was recently taken because he chose to offer succor to vampyrs. His cook turned him in. I witnessed a fragment of the interrogation that resulted via a scrying sensor, but they are adamant about the truth of it not getting out. They tried to convince him to blame it on bewitchment, but he refused.
Lor’themar scowled.
Lor'themar Theron says: Sycophants. Their breaths down our necks have resulted in no small amount of frustration. On that I can agree. But this news is… significant. All of it is. It would be one thing if their claims were unfounded, but from what I understand if these Crusaders will not stop at their own people, they certainly won’t stop if they see our own as a threat.
Velameestra Windrunner says: They won’t stop, but the moment the populace realizes the lies they’ve been feeding them is the moment their entire story gets littered with holes.
Sylvanas frowned.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Yet how many of their lies are lies? This is inexcusable. Clearly the Crusade is a threat not only to Quel’Thalas but Lordaeron and the rest of the kingdoms as well. But how can we refute their claims when we are hiding precisely what they are seeking? What will our neighbors, our hosts, think when the Crusade’s claims are not unfounded? How are we to trust you if we cannot even trust them?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Queen Jaina has returned and she also knows. Uther is also here and he also knows. There are people looking at what is happening, and they are recognizing the threat to their own loved ones as well as monsters in the dark. We witnessed that at Andorhal. An entire society is brewing there under the leadership of baroness Annibeth Lansing.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: So she succumbed as well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: To the plague. The weapon that the Crusade helped fund. It was meant to spawn mindless undead. Ones that were genuine threats to everyone around them. But they are no longer mindless.
Lor’themar furrowed his brow.
Lor'themar Theron says: How did that come to pass?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I awoke them.
Lor'themar Theron says: You have such capabilities?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I do. I countered the influence of the plague and restored their lucidity.
Lor'themar Theron says: Such a tool would be a powerful one… though I must ask why you didn’t simply cut them down.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Because it wasn’t their choice. It was a tragedy inflicted on them, and if I had the means to offer them another option, then they deserved the chance. Why wouldn’t I offer them such a thing? They could have been cut down, burned, and mourned as casualties of a mad man’s ideations… but instead I got to witness a daughter reunite with a father she thought was dead.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: And was he not?
Velameestra Windrunner says: In body, perhaps. But it was still him.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: What hope could there be for any happiness in such an existence, Velameestra?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The hope that has been seen in Northrend right now, Ranger-General. We’ve discovered a means to not have to necessarily feed from the throats of the living. We can feed on animals, just as you do. The manner is different from how you exist, of course, but it’s more palatable. Especially for us, who have always had a reliance on magic. We have developed means to survive and live in tandem with our living kin. Perhaps, too, what we have learned can be applied to what the rest of our people are lacking in the absence of the Sunwell, given time. It’s all documented research, of course, we can turn it over at any point for review. But there are clearly other paths. Paths we have started to walk, and we… you’ll excuse the breach in formality, but you promised me after I died that you would see our people through this nightmare. You now don’t need to do that alone, because everyone in this room wants the same thing. There’s no sense leaping from one nightmare only to plunge into another where our people are broken and scattered.
Sylvanas grit her teeth.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I see you got the message after all.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I did. And I chose this path on Kalimdor. It held more weight if it was a vampyr aiding those that needed it. It made it much harder for people to conveniently fabricate that my service ceased being relevant the moment I died. I’ve been dead for months, but that did not change my drive nor my conviction.
Sylvanas looked away.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: What would you have us do, your Majesty? Simply accept this new paradigm and expect everyone to do so with no resistance? Do you truly believe that the church, that the Crusade, would accept this? If such information were to go public-
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Then there will be outrage, yes. But the information will go public eventually, that is unavoidable. Instead, would it not be better to control the narrative? I cannot tell you what we should do. After all, I may be king, but I am a king of a nation in exile. Without the support of my Convocation, that title means little. That is why I came here, Sylvanas. Why I chose not to hide any longer. I know this last year has been hard on you, and there is nothing I can do or say to take that burden from you. I wish I had a better answer, but the fact of the matter is, we are here now. Our Convocation has been cleaved in twain between the living and the dead, and there are only a couple courses of action that can arise. On one hand, we may leave this tent as enemies. If you believe the safety of our people must tread away from the path chosen for us, then I will not stop you. But like Velameestra said, there are those among our people that have already accepted us. I know it will not be an easy change, but it is one that must happen if we are to move forward together and make a new Quel’Thalas. The time will come when we will take back our home and we can return to our streets, our cities, and our forests. I only ask you consider letting all of us return. Not just those who still breathe.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The sin’dorei as a whole will have enemies regardless of what is decided here. A Quel’Thalas united is one that is much better able to fend them off. The Crusade will still look for reasons, even if you denounce us. People like them always do.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: She raises a fine point. After all, do you truly believe they will take your words at face value? Even if you denounced us, how long before they spread a rumor that it was all a ruse? That you were simply doing so to avoid their ire. They will find a reason to come after you next. It is how people like them operate. They want control, and they will fight to get it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Which means kowtowing to the Crusade accomplishes nothing but a people subjugated, and a life of wondering when their next inquisition will come and what fraction of our people will need to be cut away to appease them.
Lor’themar asked what Esara made of the situation.
Esara Verrinde says: It’s a lot, that’s for sure. I didn’t know any of this until… moments before this meeting. But, I think we only have one option. If we were to run and cut off not only half of the Convocation but… gods… the hundreds and thousands of our number who are undead or who don’t want to say goodbye to their family members? What would that say for our future? Our people? I can’t say I’m comfortable with the idea, I don’t know enough, and a lot of others don’t either, but if we keep hiding and refusing to learn… I don’t think that’s going to make things easier for anyone. I may not be the Seeker of Wisdom, but I do not see wisdom in refusing to seek it.
Lor’themar smiled.
Lor'themar Theron says: Perhaps you may make a good one someday. That was well put, Lady Verrinde.
Esara Verrinde says: Thank you.
Lor’themar looked at Kael’thas and Rommath, then to Sylvanas and Vel.
Lor'themar Theron says: This has been… enlightening to say the least. I would prefer we would be able to make these decisions with the entire Convocation present, but given two are occupied overseas and another has yet to be named, I’m uncertain if there is a better time for this. I was informed that Lady Everpost was present, and she has been working on the ground level amongst the people of Lordaeron, including with the circumstances regarding the plague, correct?
Velameestra Windrunner says: She has.
Lor'themar Theron says: I would see what she has to say as well.
Liadrin was sent for, and Lor’themar explained that they wanted her perspective on the matter. While she held no formal rank, ultimately Vandellor was a respected member of the clergy and the Convocation, and he wanted to know her opinion on the matter.
Liadrin Everpost says: Well… with all due respect, commander, Ranger-General, I believe we need to recontextualize things. I have seen the thing that the Scarlet Crusade fears. I have seen the villainy and evil that can be perpetuated through the dark arts. The violence it can inspire. The ravenous hunger of the walking dead. And the darkness in the hearts of men that seek to turn their own countrymen against each other. None of those people are present here. I have seen creatures of night and darkness risk their lives to save the living and the dead, I have watched them bleed, I have watched them give their lives again and again, I have seen their heads taken from the blades of mortals who seek to do far darker things than they could ever choose to do, and I have heard tales of them risking their lives to save those who would have destroyed them once and for all. There are a lot of things to be afraid of in the world, a lot of things to shy away from and fear… but the men and women in this tent right now are not it. Without their help, this plague would have threatened a lot more than it did. Because they found it as early as they could, myself and others were able to isolate it, but it will still kill, and when it does… Tell me, when you experience loss… if you had the opportunity to save something else from that, even if the solution was something harder… wouldn’t it be worth giving it a try? The Scarlet Crusade is perverting the beliefs of the church, some of our own people stand with them, condemning their own brothers and sisters… is that what you would want to perpetuate for the sake of protecting them? I cannot lie and say I am fully comfortable with the idea… the fact those who have fallen still walk amongst us, that they are driven to prey upon the living, it’s a frightful thing. It would be easy to turn our backs on them. But what would that cost us? What kind of people would that make us? We are in an unprecedented time of night, a darkness that is worse than anything any of us have ever seen, and many of us lived through a very dark time. But it is always darkest before the dawn, and if we destroy ourselves before we see it, then no one will bask in Belore’s light, so why should we not be the ones to bear that torch? If we do not, who will?
Lor’themar nodded.
Lor'themar Theron says: Well said, Liadrin. And I would be ignorant to ignore the fact that… well… I daresay there would be fewer beings as prepared to navigate through the darkness than a creature of the night directly.
He offered a small smirk.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The narrative that has been presented depicts us as parasitic and predatory. The reality, is that the living and the dead have the potential to exist in a state of symbiosis. The winter snows protect the seeds so they can grow in the spring.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: A great deal of thought has been put towards this already. I was going to bring it up later, but Miss Windrunner has been so kind as to draw up several valuable ideas for how our nation might move forward. It is extensive.
He placed a simplified copy of the ideas Vel had presented on the table.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: But it will require adaptation in all regards. Your fear is not unfounded, Ranger-General. Many of us are still adapting. Many of us are… still trying to figure out what this new existence means. Tell me. Would you be so willing to turn on your own family simply because they are going through a change that they, and you, do not fully understand?
Sylvanas narrowed her eyes.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I would thank you to leave my family out of this, Grand Magister.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Your family is here, Ranger-General. I am in this, and I am one of the people you would be turning your back on. My dying words were ‘for the sin’dorei’, and that statement has shaped everything I’ve done since I returned.
As Vel spoke, Liadrin blinked and spoke up, though her timbre was different.
Liadrin Everpost says: It does have a certain ring to it. One I believe can benefit all of us.
Aelthalyste manifested out of her niece and steadied Liadrin. Sylvanas immediately hovered her hand over a dagger, and Lor’themar also tensed, but Aelthalyste told them both to calm themselves.
Aelthalyste Everpost says: I am simply here to listen and to aid. That is ever the purpose of the Church of Belore, to enlighten and to bring light that can keep out the darkest shadows, but understanding those shadows is how one can navigate them safely.
Lor'themar Theron says: Aelthalyste…?
Aelthalyste Everpost says: It’s nice to see you again, Lor’themar.
She winked at Vel.
Sylvanas slowly lowered her hand from her dagger, and she sighed.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: So this is the path we are to walk then… hmph.
She looked at Lor’themar.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: You seem to believe this course of action is worth investigating, Lor’themar, and some good points were brought up here… but we are balancing on a dangerous precipice. To align ourselves in such a way will not make us many allies. Is this truly the course of action that we should be taking?
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I don’t know, Ranger-General, but I know that I would be glad to have you by our side. After all, there are few I can think of who can navigate such a winding path than Sylvanas Windrunner.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Flattery will get you nowhere, your majesty.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: That was not flattery. Simply an observation and a hope. I want to build a Quel’Thalas… one that does not need to fear itself, its neighbor… I want to build a Quel’Thalas that is not brighter, perhaps, but that is better for its people.
Sylvanas chewed on her tongue as she considered.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: …Very well. I can see the way the wind is blowing. I’ve seen it for some time. I don’t know if this is the right decision, but I will be damned if I let our people suffer because of it.
Kael’thas smiled.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: That is all that we could ask, Ranger-General.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: There are a few other matters that should be addressed. Things of import that may alter the course of our nation. Like we said, a great deal has been occurring in Northrend.
He launched into an explanation of things that had happened, and Kael’thas spoke on the meetings with the vrykul and what Lana’thel had been up to. Sylvanas and Lor’themar shared what had taken place in the Eastweald. Vel also offered what had happened on Kalimdor, including the deal she had made in order to acquire the anima knowledge that served as a bedrock for the research that has since evolved.
Sylvanas looked at Vel.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Velameestra, if you are still here, am I to assume the narrative Gilveradin was responsible for turning on you was indeed an exaggeration?
Velameestra Windrunner says: An outright lie, more than an exaggeration.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: So what are the circumstances around the dragons he now serves?
Rommath went into his own experiences about the meeting with the Wymrest Accord, and Kael’thas spoke up to add his own parts.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I spoke at length with Velameestra and prince Uther in the past. As they had mentioned, Daval Prestor, the man responsible for circulating the rumor… he is more of an issue than we may have believed otherwise. His grabs for power has had other alternate goals, because he too is one of these black dragons. Like Rommath said, according to their ambassador… their former leader, a dragon named Deathwing, had turned against the others and also amongst them. While both Rommath and Velameestra have reason to believe the situation is even more complicated than that, regardless, Daval Prestor is not to be trusted. He is as much a threat to us as the Scarlet Crusade. It is his own rule that has allowed the Crusade to grow, and it is with his blessing that they act. I have brokered a deal with prince Menethil. If he aids us in removing the Scarlet Crusade, and supports our people as best he can, then we will aid him in bringing down the pretender on the throne of Alterac. Mutually beneficial goals in both situations. I hope that you can agree with such terms.
Lor'themar Theron says: Regardless of our personal opinion, the Scarlet Crusade is a problem. And from the moment I met Daval Prestor, I knew that something was off about him. I believe this is a wise course of action, and that you were wise in taking it, my king. But we will need to exercise caution, and I do not believe it would be wise to publicly denounce him until such a time it would be appropriate for us to do so.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We are gathering evidence. Proclaiming Daval Prestor as a traitor and a dragon would not do until that evidence is unshakable. That is our intent.
Lor'themar Theron says: A sound and tactical decision. There are many things that must be done before we retake our homeland. But at the very least, removing this thorn will ensure we can look forward instead of looking back. I believe we can all agree on that. Regardless of our personal opinions on the changing paradigm of the sin’dorei, the Crusade has been breathing down our necks for far too long, and I will be glad to unsheathe my blade against them.
Velameestra Windrunner says: A notion that is shared by many.
Uther and Gil were also both called into the tent so they could speak with them, and Lor’themar looked them over.
Lor'themar Theron says: Welcome back to the world of the living, your Highness.
Uther Menethil says: Quite pleased to be here myself, commander,
Lor'themar Theron says: We have spoken amongst the gathered members of the Convocation and have come to an agreement, one you will find efficacious. We understand his Majesty made an agreement with you that if you aid us, then we will aid you in deposing Daval Prestor. His rule poses a great danger to our well being, and we would be fools not to aid you. However, given the shifting nature of our people, I’m hoping as the crown prince of Lordaeron, you will aid in the smooth transition as we move into a new era as neighbors. I wager this will be even more important given the dynamic of your own nation is changing as well.
Uther Menethil says: An infection has taken root, to be certain. I’m certain it will be excised.
Lor'themar Theron says: Very good. When the time comes, you will have what support we can offer safely. But I believe it wise if those of us gathered continue to act as if this conversation has not happened. At least until the Crusade is dealt with. Then, your Majesty, you can go about your plan to come clean, as it were, to the rest of our people.
Kael’thas nodded.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I believe that is wise. The last thing I would want is a declaration to happen before the Crusade is backed into a corner. Our kind has given them plenty of ammunition, and I would not give them further cause to prosecute my people.
Lor’themar nodded and then looked at Gil.
Lor'themar Theron says: As for you, Gilveradin, we owe you an apology.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: The truth of the matter has been made clear to us. For the time being, the warrant for your arrest will remain to keep up appearances. But now the Grand Magister has spoken to this Wyrmrest Accord, the truth has been revealed. While I am still… uncertain as to their true motives, it is clear to me that Prestor’s animosity toward his draconic brethren led him toward levying accusations. Like I said to avoid suspicion, the warrant will remain, but you are no longer considered an enemy of our people. I do not pretend to know the specifications of your mission, Gilveradin, but I do wish you an expeditious conclusion. At the very least, I imagine, your responsibilities to these Scales of Azeroth… will allow you to move into a position where we will no longer need to obfuscate as far as Daval Prestor is concerned. Do you understand?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Completely. Honestly, having him continue to believe I’m on my back foot will be useful.
Lor'themar Theron says: If your unique position can place us into a position of power over Prestor, then we will continue to benefit. If he is indeed a dragon as you say… then he has made clear he is no ally to us. We will dismantle his allies, then we will dismantle him. I will not have him threaten our people anymore.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: That we can definitely agree on.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Thank you, all of you, for listening to what we had to say. I understand the next many years are going to be rather difficult, but I am emboldened to know people I trust will be there to ensure things go smoothly. I would have not looked forward to building a new Convocation without the two of you.
Lor'themar Theron says: You appear to be, by all accounts, the same king that I swore to serve. I cannot pretend to know the complications you are going through, your Majesty, but so long as you and I seek to serve our people, we share a common goal. I, as ever, will put my trust in the Sunstrider dynasty regardless of what that means for the future. Don’t make me regret it.
He smiled, and Kael returned the smirk.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I would never dream of it, my friend.
The meeting began to adjourn with a bit of an unease, but with the potential of something better, the Convocation split to share whatever they could with the group. Lor’themar briefly looked over the policy ideas that Vel had fabricated, and he glanced over at her.
Lor'themar Theron says: This is quite extensive, Velameestra.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I had a surprising amount of time.
Lor'themar Theron says: I believe you have the groundwork for something great here. You have my thanks for sharing it.
Lor’themar and Sylvanas also asked everything they could think of about what was going on with the undead faction of their people and what the collective struggles were and strategies of how to move forward. Kael’thas expressed that his goal, once everything was revealed, was that he wanted to give everyone the opportunity to do what they wanted and he understood it may be too much for some, thus he wanted to perhaps speak with Aethas to provide an avenue for those that wished to expatriate to Dalaran, or perhaps Lordaeron, if it was possible.
As the group began to disperse, Kael’thas looked at Vel with a smile.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: That went about as well as it could have, Vel. Thank you.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I simply offered what facts were available.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: After making those facts available! The fact you were able to learn and do all these things… I can only imagine where we would be without you. Or where I would be without you. That dream… I believe we’ve taken the first steps toward making it a reality.
Velameestra Windrunner says: The first stone is laid.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I look forward to laying many more.
Vel smiled at him and gave a small nod. As Kael left, Sylvanas looked at Vel.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Alleria is here as well.
Velameestra Windrunner says: She is.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I would… it may be wise we all speak seeing most of the family is present.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I believe that was anticipated.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: For what it’s worth… I am glad that you are back, Vel.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And I’m glad to be back. It’s good to see you again, aunt Sylvanas.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: I had a feeling… the idea that Gil would have been somehow responsible for slaying you was difficult to believe.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Prestor picked a poor narrative for those familiar with its players.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: If you would let everyone know, I have a few things I need to take care of first.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Of course.
Vel nodded and left the command tent, though her eyes were drawn toward the Aurum Blade encampment, as it wasn’t far away.
After the meeting was adjourned, Uther and Remnii headed over to the main part of the camp along with Maxwell Tyrosus and Darion Mograine. There were a lot of varied individuals, including blacksmiths and other people needed to keep a small settlement going around the keep that had been built up.
Uther approached the soldiers around the keep, who demanded that he state his business, as traffic in the keep was restricted to officers and clergy when appropriate.
Uther Menethil says: I’m here to see the commander.
Lordane Guard says: With all due respect, who are you?
Uther Menethil says: Her brother.
The guards exchanged looks.
Lordane Guard says: Pah. Is this some kind of joke? It’s pretty poor taste. It’s been less than a year since his highness’s passing, I don’t think making light of such topics is appreciated.
Uther Menethil says: I understand we are in dire times, but surely you wouldn’t begrudge me making light of my own supposed death.
Maxwel Tyrosus says: And if the two of you know what’s good for you, you won’t mention this to anyone else for the time being.
Lordane Guard says: Lord Tyrosus…?
Their eyes widened as they looked at Uther again and they asked if it was really him. Uther confirmed, and the guards hastily stepped aside to let him pass. Maxwell gave them a nod and they headed into the keep. Darion smirked at Uther, and as they maneuvered through the corridors, they saw good ser Benjamin Warde standing outside a meeting chamber. Remnii, who was described as a human, smiled warmly as she saw him.
Benjamin asked if they could help him with anything as the marshall was presently in a meeting. Uther asked who the meeting was with, and Benjamin said it was a routine meeting going over some of the recent reports with members of the Silver Hand and other leaders.
Uther Menethil says: Well. In that case, your prince thanks you for your duty.
Remnii says: Oh dear.
Uther put a hand on the door and pushed to open it. Benjamin tried to stop him, but then he heard Remnii’s voice and he squinted at her. Uther pushed past him and saw a war room with a handful of people in it. First and foremost was Turalyon Windrunner, one of the former leaders of the Silver Hand, his shattered blade on his back. He immediately turned to look at Uther. On the inside of the door was a towering, balding man: Marwyn, who immediately went to draw his blade. There was also a Dark Iron dwarf woman with bright eyes, a hammer and a chained spiked flail leaning against the table. And finally his eyes fell on Ashwynn, her finger still pointed at the map, mid statement. Her hair was still in a thick brain far past her hips. She was wearing armor that would denote her as the leader of the royal guard, and also as the grand marshall of the Lordane military. At her hip was the one Falric once wielded.
Marwyn lunged forward and grabbed Uther.
Marwyn says: Who the hell do you think you are? Ser Ward, what is the meaning of this?
Benjamin Warde says: I’m sorry sir, he barged in!
Turalyon’s eyes narrowed, as did Ashwynn’s, but then recognition passed over her face.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Uther…? Is that you?
Uther Menethil says: Hello sister! It’s been too long!
Marwynn was still holding on to Uther.
Marwyn says: Your highness, what are you talking about?
Ashwynn Menethil says: Please release him.
Marwyn says: …As you command.
Marwyn released Uther and squinted at him.
Uther Menethil says: You look good, old man! I’ve missed you.
Marwyn’s eyes widened.
Marwyn says: It can’t be…
Uther Menethil says: And yet here I stand.
Ashwynn made her way around the table and she grabbed Uther’s face with one hand and pulled his head back and forth to get a better look at him.
Ashwynn Menethil says: …By the Light it really is you. You’re still alive.
Uther Menethil says: Against impossible odds, yes, I am.
Ashwynn froze, and he felt the grip on his chin tighten.
Ashwynn Menethil says: What did you do to your hair?
Uther Menethil says: Moving around in my lands it was important no one saw Prince Uther. It’s important Prestor still thinks I’m dead.
Ashwynn’s other fist balled at her hip.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Well then, he’ll be disappointed. Because I think… I think I’ll be able to resist killing you myself.
Uther Menethil says: Well, that’s fortunate. I thought you were at least going to–
Ashwynn smacked Uther across the face, but then she pulled him into a hug.
Uther Menethil says: Ugh! I’m not the only one who has gotten strong!
Ashwynn Menethil says: I thought you were dead. But I guess that was the point, wasn’t it. What about… what about mother and father, do they know? I heard mother returned, and Lianne?
Uther Menethil says: Mother knows. Father is… complicated. Lianne doesn’t know yet. We have a lot to catch up on.
Ashwynn nodded and caught her breath and centered herself as she released Uther from her embrace.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Things have been… hard. Since the war started.
Uther Menethil says: Tangentially familiar.
Ashwynn looked back to the map and explained that they had pushed the orcs back across the river, but the territories of the Eastweald were under their control or in a no man’s land. However, the lines had been drawn for the winter.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Since Grand Marshall Valonforth’s death, I’ve been doing what I could.
Dark Iron Dwarf says: And a damn fine job of it! Forward Captain Anvilblaze, as you please. It’s not often I get to meet a dead man.
She gave Uther a nod.
Turalyon Windrunner says: It’s good to see you again, Uther. When I heard about what happened… between your loss and the events that had taken place, I was beginning to worry, but the fact you still live is truly a blessing of the Light. And Maxwell!
Maxwell stepped forward and they exchanged a handshake.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: Turalyon, it’s good you’re back.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Indeed, this business with this Scarlet Crusade is troubling.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I was just speaking of the matter. I don’t know much. They’ve been offering supplies and troops here, but it sounds like the situation may be more complicated than I anticipated. After what happened with father and the order… I assumed they were simply providing aid.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Indeed, but, I can’t explain why… I had a vision recently, a dream. It’s what led me to return here. I saw the banner of the church itself ablaze, and I saw a crimson sky. I didn’t know what to make of it, so I returned to Azeroth. When I heard of the Scarlet Crusade and what had befallen our order, I was wondering if there was a connection.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: I have a feeling you might be right, old friend.
He looked at Uther.
Uther Menethil says: Well, I hardly believe I’m qualified to decipher the divination of dreams, but if not providence, certainly coincidence, because the Scarlet Crusade is a blight and must be stopped.
Ashwynn furrowed her brow.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Do you have proof of this?
Uther Menethil says: It’s quite a bit of a tale, but yes, we do have evidence. In fact, as of this moment, they’re holding Taelan Fordring prisoner in their stronghold.
Ashwynn narrowed her eyes.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Baron Fordring? He was one of their staunchest supporters, why would they do that?
Uther Menethil says: Too close to the truth. I’m not certain which members of the leadership are the ones with nefarious goals and which ones are misguided faithful.
Uther explained the context and produced the manifesto.
Turalyon Windrunner says: So the Scarlet Crusade bankrolled a villain that has gone on to develop a plague that ravaged your nation? This cannot be allowed to stand!
Uther Menethil says: My thoughts exactly.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Bring this to mother, she’ll know what to do. Some of these names are within our own nobility… if we’re going to get to the truth, I’m sure she’ll have an answer.
Turalyon Windrunner says: If you would be obliged, I want to accompany you as well. It seems many of my former kinsman have joined the Scarlet Crusade. If there are those amongst them who are misguided, I would pull the wool from their eyes. I presume you’re doing the same, Tyrosus.
Maxwell confirmed and explained that his people had been put in direct contest with the Crusade and they now had a bounty. Turalyon smirked.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Well that they would be willing to place a bounty on your head is all the proof I need they are up to no good.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: You have a great belief in my virtue, Turalyon, you do me an honor.
Turalyon Windrunner says: I only judge that which I’ve seen first-hand. If there is anything I can do to aid you, I’ll do it.
Maxwell said he was glad to have Turalyon along, but there was one thing he wanted to inform him of first. Turalyon furrowed his brow.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: Your wife is with us.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Alleria travels with you?
Maxwell Tyrosus says: Aye, she does.
Turalyon Windrunner says: That’s great news! I didn’t know where she was! She hadn’t answered my sendings. I assumed it was because I was on Outland and she was unable to hear. I should find her.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: That… might be for the best, Turalyon.
Turalyon furrowed his brow.
Turalyon Windrunner says: You… the way that you’re speaking makes it seem like there’s more to the story.
Maxwell Tyrosus says: It’s not my place to discuss it.
Turalyon was clearly thinking and trying to connect dots he didn’t have. He said he would do as Maxwell suggested, as it would be nice to see her again.
Ashwynn looked back to Anvilblaze and said they should continue the meeting, but the dwarf told her not to be daft and she should go catch up with her kin. Ashwynn thanked her.
As Uther turned, he saw Marwyn, his eyes wet with tears, as he scooped Uther into a bear hug.
Marwyn says: It’s so good to see you, lad! I thought you were dead! What’s this about me being old? I’m not that old! I’m just a little older than your old man!
Uther Menethil says: Just a bit of teasing.
Marwyn mussed up Uther’s hair and said the beard looked good and made him look tough. Ashwynn’s eyes then widened and she grabbed Uther’s shoulder and said “Vittoria”. Uther grinned.
Uther Menethil says: Does this mean you already know you’re an aunt?
Ashwynn Menethil says: What!? I was going to ask if you had heard what happened! That she had been kidnapped by terrorists.
Uther Menethil says: Not terrorists, it’s her mother. There’s a chance Galen is in Prestor’s pocket. She’s safe, as is our daughter.
Ashwynn Menethil says: …I think we have a lot to catch up on.
Ashwynn grabbed Uther into some private chambers so that Uther could share everything that had happened, and she could do the same. Uther expressed that he was proud of her, and Ashwynn asked him if she could share something she wasn’t sure what to say. He of course welcomed her to.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I feel like I have been thriving. In the war. In the planning. I’m good at it. I’m very good at it.
Uther Menethil says: I always knew you would be.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I just… to be someone who is good at waging war… feels… is it really something someone should be proud of? A princess no less… I feel like I should be more weary than I am. I should be more ashamed than I am.
Uther Menethil says: How would that serve you?
Ashwynn Menethil says: War is nothing good. It’s nothing to be proud of, yet…
Uther Menethil says: Ashwynn, in my travels, I’ve had a lot of time to think about who I am and who I want to be. And… you’re not alone. It’s not war, but I’m good at fighting. And I enjoy it. I don’t enjoy the killing, that part I could do without. And it feels antithetical to my dream of a world of peace, but I’m good at it, I enjoy it, and I make sure that when I do fight it’s not so that I have something to enjoy. Ashwynn, how many people have your efforts spared being slaughtered by our enemies?
Ashwynn Menethil says: I hope many.
Uther Menethil says: From what I’ve heard, it’s many and more. Violence should never be the first option, but unfortunately this world is teeming with those that feel otherwise. While I strive for peace, and I consider myself a peaceful man, I am not harmless. The further my journey takes me, the more it becomes apparent there are always those not interested in reaching a resolution. So I must place myself between those who cannot fight. I think it’s good you feel no shame for being as skilled as you are.
Uther looked to the side, a pained expression on his face.
Uther Menethil says: Falric would be so proud.
Ashwynn’s hand brushed against her blade.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I hope you’re right.
Uther Menethil says: Prince and princess we may be, but I think rather than concerning ourselves with trying to fit into some imagined paradigm of what we should be, we should be grateful we have the skills we have. How else would we protect our people? That is our most important job.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Thank you, Uther. I had a feeling it would be a good idea to tell you. You tend to know what to say.
Uther Menethil says: I’m glad you shared.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I’ll need to thank Elissa for watching out for you. She’s been doing a good job.
Uther Menethil says: Truth be told, I am incredibly fortunate. I don’t think there’s one person I travel with that hasn’t saved my life on at least one occasion.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I’m not surprised. Uther, you’ve always had a tendency to attract the best people and the best in people. You make people better. Their best selves come out, and I’m sure for every time they’ve saved you, you’ve done the same, and I’m sure they are as thankful to you as I am to them.
Uther Menethil says: It’s funny, as a child I imagined what it would be like fighting villains and saving our homeland. In those fantasies, it was always just me. Alone against the hordes. But no one could do this alone. It’s going to take all of us.
Ashwynn Menethil says: Well, you know you’ll have my blade. Just don’t go disappearing again, alright?
Uther Menethil says: I would love to be able to promise that.
Ashwynn Menethil says: The next time you vanish like that, I swear I’ll pull you out of whatever heaven you end up in.
Uther Menethil says: I may need! Ash! We were outside of time!
Ashwynn Menethil says: I don’t even know where to begin processing that.
Uther Menethil says: I was there for six months and I don’t even know how to begin processing that!
Ashwynn smiled and gave Uther’s hand a squeeze.
Ashwynn Menethil says: I’ll do just that then. I don’t care who tries to stop me, no one will come for my little brother without me to deal with.
Uther Menethil says: I feel safer already.
Meanwhile, Benjamin had continued to squint at Remnii, and he finally asked if he knew her. Remnii chuckled and said he didn’t know her as a human. She greeted him warmly, and Benjamin stared, and then it clicked as he realized it was Remnii.
Benjamin Warde says: Of course you’d be alive if Uther was… hey! It’s great to see you! Lady Lianne was beside herself when she learned what happened, she’ll be glad to see you again.
Remnii says: And I her.
Remnii asked about Benjamin’s family, and he confirmed that they were safe in the capital. They also caught up a bit.
Gil and Vel headed to the Aurum Blades. They saw many faces they recognized before, and many they didn’t recognize. Finnall’s tent was obvious, and as they headed toward it, they noticed two figures, one was seated, and another was trying to put a clasp on them. The seated figure was a skarvyn, and the other figure was Feerea, Finnall’s second in command.
Vel mused there were skarvyn with them, and Gil realized that’s what his alternate timeline self had been. As Ferea finished fixing the clasp on the skarvyn, she looked over at the two of them, and Vel realized her face had the tell-tale signs of being waned. Gil offered a wave in her direction, and Ferea waved back, but immediately pulled her hood up to head in the other direction with the skarvyn.
Gil and Vel entered the tent. There were a smattering of Aurum Blades members lounging around relaxing. They saw Theo and another member of the Aurum Blades playing a game of Hearthstone. Finnall was kicked back, her feet up and looking off into space in the midst of deep thought.
A few eyes turned to them as the duo entered to ensure there was no trouble, but they didn’t move from their positions.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Captain Goldensword, sorry to interrupt.
Finnall didn’t respond. Theo looked over at them, and then over at his mom as he realized she wasn’t responding. He tried to call to her a few times, and when she still didn’t respond, he simply pushed her feet off the table to get her attention.
Finnall Goldensword says: Shit! What’s up kid?
Theo gestured with his head and said she had guests, and Finnall immediately got to her feet.
Finnall Goldensword says: Sorry about that! I was… planning, we’ll call it. What can I do you for?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m bringing news of Magistrix Goldensword.
Finnall’s brow furrowed.
Finnall Goldensword says: Oh yeah? And who the hell are you supposed to be?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s good to see you again, Finnall.
Vel pulled her mask off, revealing her face. Finnall’s eyes widened.
Finnall Goldensword says: Holy shit.
She looked around.
Finnall Goldensword says: Alright everyone, wrap it up, I need the room.
There were some complaints voiced in return, and she retorted that it was her tent to begin with and they needed to just get the hell out. The mercenaries all got up to leave, and Theo started to as well, but Finnall grabbed his shoulder.
Finnall Goldensword says: Not you, you idiot.
Theo blinked.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Oh okay.
Finnall stepped forward.
Finnall Goldensword says: I’ll be damned. Velameestra Windrunner, it’s really fucking you, isn’t it?
Vel confirmed and Finnall retorted she was supposed to be dead. Vel stated a lot of people were supposed to be dead, and Finnall chuckled before correctly identifying the individual with her as Gil. She commented that the fact they were there together must have meant Gil didn’t kill his sister, and Gil confirmed he didn’t think he had it in him. Finnall agreed she hadn’t thought so.
It was only at that moment Theo realized what was going on and he said it was good to see them.
Finnall offered some drinks, and Vel accepted but then also suggested Finnall probably would have wanted one herself. She said she didn’t need to be told twice, and quickly summoned several mirror images of herself to fetch glasses and pop open a bottle of wine.
Theo asked about the news from his grandmother, and Vel explained that one of her simulacrums was with her on her expedition. She asked Finnall when the last time she saw Kilnar was, and Finnall confirmed Vel’s suspicions that it had been when they fought in front of the entire Magistrate.
Vel said she was doing well, but she was also waned. Finnall was taken aback, but did seem to know the baseline that the condition was from the gas the Horde had used, as Feerea had told her. Vel said Kilnar had taken the brunt of the attack on her manor, but she was taking it in stride for as much as she could. Finnall was clearly sobered for a moment as the news sunk in, but commented she was glad she wasn’t dead, though she doubted Kilnar was all that worried about her. Vel said Kilnar was more concerned than she might have believed.
The vampyr also explained they had met up with Thaxdorlin, and Gil referred to the dwarf as a “her”, which immediately caught Finnall’s attention. Vel explained she had asked to tell Finnall she said sorry and that she wanted to speak with her later, but the easiest way to say it was that she simply was a dragon.
Finnall Goldensword says: Wait, what? I was going to say if she was a girl she didn’t need to go running away about it… but she was a dragon!?
Velameestra Windrunner says: She’s going by Morchuron now.
Finnall Goldensword says: Well. Cool name at least. Fucking hell. I suppose it’s what I deserve, I’ve been bad at keeping track of my seconds in command. I appreciate you bearing the message. I have some questions, but… she still like the same booze, or was that an act?
Vel confirmed she still smoked and drank, and Finnall said she would make sure she kept the old stuff in stock. They also added that Morchuron preferred the form of a gnome, and Finnall was a bit flabbergasted by the entire thing, and doubly so when Gil stated they had found the gnomes, but that in itself was its own story.
Finnall Goldensword says: Well. My old second-in-command is a mythological creature disguised as another mythological creature. My mom is alive, on another continent, and also… a bit more wrinkly. You seem to know about this waned stuff. What’s the deal? Feerea hasn’t told me much.
Vel explained the baseline of what she knew, notably the fact the Red Mist had seemingly damaged the ability for the elves to restore their magical abilities. While they could still use arcane magic, it was very taxing.
Finnall was immediately concerned that Feerea had still been casting normally and hadn’t told her at all about it being more taxing, and she was not about to run her into the ground if it was a struggle for her.
Finnall Goldensword says: I know she’s been self-conscious about the whole damn thing, but I told her she was still a snack!
Velameestra Windrunner says: Restoring one’s mana stores requires siphoning it from other sources. If she has magic items around, I imagine she’s probably been doing so through those means, but I can’t say one way or another.
Finnall Goldensword says: I’ll talk to her. She’s… she and Theo are the only people I have close to leadership around here anymore, I can’t have her running herself ragged.
Velameestra Windrunner says: What happened to Dereven?
Finnall Goldensword says: Well, if you saw her, you may have seen that scaly fellow too? She claims its him. I don’t know. She brought him back and said he was captured by… well… Sinestra Windrunner if you believe it. She found him when they hit the mansion. She said he had the badge, and she thinks its him. He doesn’t remember his name, but he seems to be… well, he’s trying to help. He’s twitchy, but he wouldn’t be the first one. Some of his mannerisms are similar. If that’s Dereven, he’ll be welcome here, even if he’s not.
Gil said he believed what was said, and he also said that Sinestra was also a dragon. Vel also added that one other family matter in question was that Finnall’s father, Daelin, was returning, as he had been found on Kalimdor.
Finnall was exasperated.
Finnall Goldensword says: It figures he got himself lost for what… a decade?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: That’s not very long– oh right.
Finnall Goldensword says: Yeah maybe not to you. Shit. Did uh…?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Kilnar did see him, yes.
Finnall Goldensword says: That would have been funny to watch.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It was.
Finnall chuckled and said she should probably write to him as she figured Theo would probably want to meet his granddad. Theo said he technically met him once, but Finnall countered that it wasn’t like Theo could have remembered it.
Vel also mentioned Kael’thas had returned to the Bulwark, and Finnall did not seem to be particularly keen on the matter and she said she would stay out his way. Vel opted to use magic to telepathically transmit to Finnall.
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathically]: I know who Theo’s father is, Finnall.
Finnall’s eyes immediately honed in on Vel and she responded back that there was no way Vel knew. Vel said that if someone were to look at their faces one could tell, and she was confident she wasn’t going to be the first one to pick it up.
Finnall was trying very hard to keep her face straight, and Vel asked Gil if they could have the room. Gil immediately looked at Theo and asked if he wanted to go somewhere. Theo agreed, but asked Finnall if she was alright.
Finnall Goldensword says: Yeah, everything is good, kid. I just need to talk to Vel for a second.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Alright, well, holler if you need me.
Theo and Gil headed out of the tent to give Finnall and Vel space.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m sorry, I wanted to frame that a bit better, but I didn’t want to drop it in front of your son.
Finnall Goldensword says: That’s for the best. Fuck. Does anyone else know?
Vel confirmed no one she knew of did, and she herself was only largely able to piece it together because of the clues Finnall had dropped previously, but seeing Kael and Theo in similar proximity had effectively cemented it.
Finnall Goldensword says: I… definitely said more than I should have that one day, didn’t I.
Velameestra Windrunner says: That is the downfall of alcohol.
Finnall Goldensword says: Fuck. Yeah. I guess I don’t know for sure, but it makes sense… he was the only one that I… the timeline matches up. And I mean, you saw his magic.
Velameestra Windrunner says: His magic. His eyes. His face.
Finnall Goldensword says: Shit. Yeah it’s gotten worse as he’s gotten older too. I was hoping he would take a bit more after me, but… not even Kilnar knows. I didn’t want her to use him to try and get in his good graces…
Velameestra Windrunner says: That will likely not be a problem anymore.
Finnall asked why she thought that, and Vel admitted there were some changes that were happening. She asked if Finnall had heard the rumors about the vampyrs, and Finnall confirmed she had and she’d been looking out for her people to ensure they weren’t implicated in any nonsense. Vel said it wasn’t nonsense, and Finnall paused.
Finnall Goldensword says: …Let me guess. You?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes.
Finnall Goldensword says: Kael’thas?
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Yes.
Finnall sighed heavily.
Finnall Goldensword says: Fuck me.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m… not going to tell you what to do. But I would suggest it would be better for him to hear it from you, rather than rumors that will inevitably start flowing. Theo, at this point, I believe also deserves to know who his father is.
Finnall Goldensword says: Shit. Did you come here with him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I did.
Finnall Goldensword says: How is he?
Velameestra Windrunner says: He’s… doing well. He recently named me as an ambassador, so…
Finnall Goldensword says: Seriously? Congratulations, that’s a big deal. I’ll…
She hesitated.
Finnall Goldensword says: I should ask Theo, I think. That’s probably the right call here. It’s up to him if he wants to do anything, and when you say changes… why do you think this won’t affect him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The... some of the considerations being made. If they would go through, it would remove the need for a Sunstrider heir.
Finnall Goldensword says: Oh. You say may, so it’s not confirmed?
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s not set in stone, no. But there are discussions happening. I’m not at liberty to go into details.
Finnall Goldensword says: Yeah, I get it. I get it.
Velameestra Windrunner says: And… Kael’s status is also on the down low, right now, so…
Finnall’s brow raised, recognizing the nickname.
Finnall Goldensword says: Okay. Will you help me explain it to Theo?
Vel agreed she could if her presence would be advantageous, and Finnall admitted she probably needed Vel to go and get Kael’thas if Theo wanted to meet him anyway. She took a swig of her booze.
Finnall Goldensword says: You’re right. I did need this. But mark my words, Vel, if they try to take my boy away, I will burn the city down a second time.
Vel promised her that she would also help to ensure that didn’t happen, as with the changes happening, putting Theo in a situation he did not want to be in was not at the forefront of anything that would be considered. Vel also specified that also went for Kilnar, and Finnall nodded.
Finnall Goldensword says: Thanks… for… I’ve been. Yeah. Lets go get Theo.
She headed out to fetch Theo. Theo and Gil had, meanwhile, been chatting and Theo just asked Gil what he had been doing during the months that had since passed. Gil gave him some basic answers about the dragons he had been working with.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: What are they like? I guess I’m a little curious now…
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Barring the fact they are all individuals as well… but, for instance, the blue are the best practitioners of magic that you’ve ever met. Even beyond those at Dalaran.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: I guess I look forward to meeting an actual dragon in the future!
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Other than the one you have.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Well yeah, but knowing they are dragons. Do you think I’ve met any others?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Honestly, probably.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: I think that’s cool.
Gilveradin Windrunner says: The world is bigger than you think it is.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: The world is bigger than either of us think it is.
Finnall called for her son and demanded a family talk. She looked back at Vel and asked if Gil knew about Theo’s lineage, and Vel confirmed she had not voiced her suspicions to Gil as she was, in general, very discreet about the matter until she had the chance to speak with her.
Finnall called for Gil to scram and go get some booze or something. Gil shrugged and headed over to a group of mercenaries. Ferea was there as well with the skarvyn that was seemingly Dereven. She was sitting a bit away from the rest of the group, and one of the veterans headed over with a drink for her. She pulled her hood lower over her face, and the other mercenary offered a sad smile before heading over to sit with the rest of his friends. It appeared the Aurum Blades didn’t treat her any differently, but she clearly had a lot of personal struggles with her new appearance.
Back in the tent, Theo asked Finnall if she was alright because she was acting rather weird. Finnall confirmed she was, but scratched the back of her head and asked Theo if he wanted to meet his dad. Theo was taken aback, and Finnall clarified his dad was present at the Bulwark, and if he wanted to meet him, Vel could bring him to the tent and introduce him.
Finnall Goldensword says: If you wanted the chance to know who your father is… you’re old enough and deserve to know. So I’m giving you that chance. Because it’s the right thing to do, and hiding it any longer would eat me up, and make me feel like a bitch. So, is that something you want, kid? Because it’s up to you.
Vel also heard the quiet underlying insinuation in her voice of “and if I waited any longer I’d just be doing what my mom would do”.
Theo blinked and then looked at Vel.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: You… brought him here?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I was traveling with him, yes.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Oh. How did you find out?
Velameestra Windrunner says: You look a lot like him. And Finnall confirmed.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Am I allowed to know who he is before? Or is this one of those things where you are going to march him into the room and make a big scene of it?
Finnall Goldensword says: No, no. His surprise would be enough. It’s… it’s Kael’thas. Kael’thas Sunstrider. The king.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: …Oh. You and… you and he were…?
Finnall Goldensword says: It’s a long story, kid, and it’s not one I care to explain to you right now. But yeah, we were close for… a bit.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Does that make me… a prince?
Velameestra Windrunner says: He would need to legitimize it. And if that is something you do not want, he will not do it.
Finnall Goldensword says: Yeah, that’s a conversation that needs to happen. Look, kid, whatever you want to do is okay. I love you and regardless things are apparently changing. You don’t need to be king at any point, that’s not what’s being asked of you… It’s just… if you want to make this connection, then you have the chance to, and anything you decide to do, I’ll support you. You don’t need to do anything. You never have to do anything. I won’t ever, ever force you. You can walk out of this tent right now and never see me again and I would never–
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Mom, shut up, I would never do that. I love you too. I would never leave you, and I don’t think you’ve ever forced me to do anything. If you’re worried about me staying with the Aurum Blades it’s because I want to. I like helping you and fighting alongside the other mercenaries. I’m not doing this just because you are, if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t do it. I take after you way too much for that.
Finnall hugged Finnall and screamed into his shoulder that she loved him. Theo laughed and told her that he loved her too. Finnall pulled away with a deep breath.
Finnall Goldensword says: Okay. Sorry. I kind of got distracted. What do you think? You don’t need to decide now–
Theo held up his hands and shook his head.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: I think I wouldn’t mind meeting him. At the very least, he deserves that too, right? We can figure out what comes after that?
Finnall Goldensword says: Gods, how did you get so mature? That wasn’t from me!
Theo'remar Goldensword says: No, it wasn’t.
Finnall Goldensword says: You aren’t supposed to agree!
Theo chuckled.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Too late for that.
Finnall also laughed. She asked Vel to go fetch Kael’thas, and Vel asked if Finnall wanted her to send the king to her, or to bring him. Finnall sighed and then said it would probably not be a bad idea for Vel to be there, as she didn’t trust herself not to yell, and she needed Vel to stop her if she did. If Kael was alright with her being there, then Finnall was too, as Vel was the one that blew the lid off it.
She also admitted that, ultimately, she was pretty sure Kilnar liked Vel better than she liked her, so Vel was basically family anyway. Vel said she wouldn’t agree with that assessment, she appreciated the sentiment.
Gil watched as Vel left the tent and she hurried over to her to ask if they were leaving then. Vel explained she was going to be returning with Kael’thas as there were a few matters going on, and Gil was clearly confused and asked why the king was needed.
Vel stopped and looked at him.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Gil. I’m not going to say explicitly. But I want you to picture Theo’s face, and then I want you to picture Kael’thas’s face, and examine them both very closely. I’m just going to leave you with that.
Vel left her brother considering that before she went to find Kael’thas. It didn’t click for him until Kael’thas entered the tent, but when it did, he loosed an exclamation.
Aurum Blades Mercenary says: Woah, kid, are you alright?
Gilveradin Windrunner says: Yeah, I just had a thought.
Aurum Blades Mercenary says: Ahhhh, yeah, those are hard sometimes, I get that. Here, lets top you off.
Vel had found Kael’thas with Rommath as they were wrapping up some business, and Kael’thas lit up when he saw her.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Vel! Is everything alright? I know you’re going to be meeting with your family later. If you are nervous, it’s okay. I have faith that everything will be alright.
Velameestra Windrunner says: Ah. Thank you. We are… generally decent at working things out, but I appreciate that. Actually, Captain Goldensword is requesting your presence in her camp.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: What? Why? Why would she want to talk to me?
Velameestra Windrunner says: She… wants to tell you something.
Kael’thas looked over at Rommath, who projected telepathically to both of them.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: Oh no. I won’t be an out for you in this case. Whatever she has to tell you is your problem.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Rommath!
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: I had nothing to do with whatever grave you dug yourself with that woman.
Velameestra Windrunner says: If… you want someone else to be present, I’m allowed to be.
Kael’thas sighed.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: That… may not be a bad idea. Historically, she and I have… if voices are raised, can I count on you to keep me in line?
Velameestra Windrunner says: …For what it’s worth she’s counting on me for the same thing.
Rommath’s brow raised, and he telepathically projected specifically to Vel.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: It’s your funeral. Is this anything I need to worry about?
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathically]: I’m sure his Majesty will inform you after the fact.
Rommath looked at her with a clear indicator of “yeah, you’re right” in his eyes.
Kael’thas and Velameestra headed toward the Aurum Blades camp, Kael’thas now clearly nervous because his ex had sent his current interest to go fetch him and the entire situation was strange. Vel heard Gil’s spit-take as they entered the tent, and she shot Gil a look that said “ah, I see you figured it out” before following after Kael.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Captain Goldensword-
Finnall Goldensword says: Don’t even start with me, Kael.
Kael offered a hesitant smile.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: As you wish, Finnall, it’s good to see you.
Finnall Goldensword says: Likewise, I’m glad you’re not dead.
She suddenly inhaled.
Finnall Goldensword says: Fuck.
Kael looked at Vel, and then at Finnall.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: So you know.
Finnall Goldensword says: I do. It’s fine. I don’t care. You’re not here because of that, it’s because of something else that I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t know how, and I wanted to do that now before things get out of hand or you find out from someone else… uh…
Finnall looked at Vel, and then Kael’thas again. Behind Kael, Vel gave her an affirming nod.
Finnall Goldensword says: I need to introduce you to someone. This is my son, Theo’remar Goldensword.
Kael’thas furrowed his brow.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: It’s a pleasure to meet you, though I fail to see what reason you would have to introduce me in such a way…
Finnall Goldensword says: Really? Kael… maybe you should take a closer look. I think you might find a reason.
Theo bowed his head.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: It’s nice to meet you, your Majesty.
Vel watched as it clicked as Kael’thas looked closer at Theo, and his eyes widened.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Finnall… you don’t mean…
Finnall nodded.
Finnall Goldensword says: Yeah. He’s your son too.
Kael’thas was silent for a long moment. He glanced over at Vel.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Were you the one to figure that out?
Velameestra Windrunner says: I did.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Keen eye.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I thought both you and him deserved to know.
Kael stepped forward.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: It’s truly a pleasure to meet you, Theo, if it’s alright if I call you that.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Of course, your Majesty, that’s what most people call me anyway.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Well you don’t need to call me that. It’s fine if you prefer, but if you want to call me Kael, that’s perfectly fine. You’ve earned that right… well. Look at you. Theo, I wasn’t expecting this, and I get the sense you weren’t either, but what do you want to happen from here?
Theo scratched the back of his head.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Well, I don’t think I want to be a prince or anything like that…
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: No no, that’s quite all right.
Theo'remar Goldensword says: I… I guess I wouldn’t mind knowing who you are. I mean… I know you’re our king, but I don’t know much else about you. And I think that’s a good place to start, yeah?
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I think it’s as good a place as any. Um, I’m sorry… I could never help you. I don’t blame your mother for not telling me, but had I known, I would have done something–
Finnall Goldensword says: Don’t start, Kael. You don’t owe us anything. You don’t have any obligation to give us anything. No gold or… you already gave me something that I couldn’t possibly have asked for because I didn’t know how much I needed it, and just… don’t start getting like that, okay? Forget about the last seventeen or so years, just focus on today and tomorrow and what happens next, okay?
Kael’thas nodded.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: …Okay. Okay. I will. Um. So. What do you like to do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Um, yeah. I uh… I like helping around the camp. I enjoy doing chores, I know that’s a bit weird. A bunch of us play Hearthstone. I’m pretty alright at it.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Oh really? I actually just started learning Hearthstone myself! Vel actually taught me recently. I’m not very good, and I don’t have a deck of my own yet, but I wouldn’t mind playing a few rounds with you, if you want?
Theo'remar Goldensword says: Yeah, that would be fun. I’m… not going to hold back just because you’re new. Or because you’re my… father.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I would expect nothing less. Don’t hold back because I’m technically the king either!
Theo chuckled and agreed he won’t. He offered to let Kael borrow one of his decks, and Kael said he would probably just need to read through them a bit as he was still learning the rules. Theo assured him he could take whatever time he needed.
They sat down and started to play a few games of Hearthstone. Kael’thas lost almost every game, and they spent time chatting as they played. Theo mentioned that Finnall had taught him some magic, and he showed Kael a bit of it. Kael’thas was stunned by it all and offered to introduce him to Al’ar later, the phoenix he had forged a bond with. Theo agreed.
Through everything, Finnall was sitting back watching with Vel. There was a wistful, sad expression on her face, and as she glanced over at Vel, who was sipping on a glass of blood-inert wine, she noticed the fond expression on the other woman’s face as she watched Kael and his son bond.
Finnall leaned over.
Finnall Goldensword says: So… Kael, huh?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yeah. He asked me to call him that.
Finnall Goldensword says: And you are… teaching him to play Hearthstone?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yeah. Teaching is a bit of… he did learn in Dalaran. He knew the basics.
Finnall Goldensword says: The two of you seem pretty close.
Velameestra Windrunner says: We’re… starting to get to know each other.
Finnall chuffed softly.
Finnall Goldensword says: I’m glad to hear it. I think you… you have something he could use.
Vel’s expression grew considering as she looked back at Theo and Kael.
Velameestra Windrunner says: …How do you feel about telling him? Now that you’re seeing this?
Finnall Goldensword says: It’s hard. I think it’s hard. But... it was the right call. It was definitely the right call. Hey, Vel, um… could you look out for him?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Of course.
Finnall Goldensword says: Thanks. I appreciate it. I really do.
Kael would have liked to stay longer, but ultimately he knew he had other things to take care of, and he didn’t want to steal the entire day from them. He promised Theo he would be in touch, and he and Vel left to start heading back towards the main sin’dorei camp.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Thank you, Vel. For… giving me this unexpected gift.
Velameestra Windrunner says: As I had said, both you and Theo deserved to know.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I’m glad I do know.
He chuffed quietly.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: Who would have thought this whole time I… actually did have some living family left. How wonderful. Do you… think he likes me?
Velameestra Windrunner says: Yes. I believe he does.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: It’s funny to care about that for some reason.
Velameestra Windrunner says: He’s your son. I believe it’s natural to care about that.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I guess you’re right.
Vel apologized for not outright saying what he was going to be told, and for Finnall knowing about his status, but she admitted that she wasn’t great about obfuscation when faced with a direct question, and Finnall had ultimately pieced it together the moment she knew Vel herself was undead. Kael assured her that he believed she made the right choice, as they were still invited back to her tent in the end.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m glad you could have that.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I am too. Belore. I’m a father. How odd.
He was still clearly digesting the revelation.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It suits you. If that’s not too presumptuous to say.
The tips of Kael’s ears got notably pink, and he laughed softly.
Kael'thas Sunstrider says: I don’t think it is. But you are kind to say so.
They returned back to Rommath, and before Vel set off to attend to her own family matters, she shot him a quiet smirk.
Velameestra Windrunner says [telepathically]: An obituary isn’t needed, Grand Magister.
Rommath Pyrewing says [telepathically]: Good to know, Miss Windrunner. I would hate to have to bury you a second time.
It did not take long for Kael to inform him of what had occurred.
Vel headed back to the camp that Vereesa and Lirath had setup. Sylvanas and Turalyon had not yet arrived, but Gil had made his way there and was playing with Lirath. Esara was also present, sitting next to Lirath. Esara waved at Vel and said she should probably get going, but Vereesa said she could stay. Lirath told her it was alright if she didn’t want to, but she was welcome if she wanted to stick around.
She looked at Vel again, and fiddled with her ring. She then looked at Gil, and she said there was something that she should say before she left.
Esara Verrinde says: Well… Vel, Gil… before I go, there is something I should let you both know. That we should let you know.
Lirath smiled.
Lirath Windrunner says: I asked Esara if she would be my wife.
Vel had froze at the news as she sat down, while Gil hurried over to Esara and hugged her in delight. Esara was surprised as she hugged him back and whispered a quick thank you to him.
Esara Verrinde says: I know this is sudden… but there isn’t really a good time to say it. It happened a few months ago.
She looked over at Vel.
Esara Verrinde says: And you know I would never try to… nothing has to change between any of us.
Vel sat in silence for a long moment, clearly processing what had just been said. When she finally spoke, she was quiet.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m… I am happy for you. Though… I suppose I should also probably… mention…
She trailed off for another moment.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I… broke the hex. Minn’da’s hex. She uh… she’s going to come back.
A lot of hands went to a lot of mouths in the circle of Windrunners.
Lirath Windrunner says: For true?
Velameestra Windrunner says: …Yeah. She… wants to come back. I saw her briefly. I… promised.
Esara’s face lit up.
Esara Verrinde says: You really think she can come back after everything?
Velameestra Windrunner says: The hex that was keeping her trapped is broken. The hex on the ring… it’s gone.
A spike of trepidation crossed Esara’s face as she looked at Lirath, but he squeezed her hand.
Lirath Windrunner says: We will… we will need to have discussions. Likely many. But… Esara, I’m not going to just throw you to the curb. Do you really think Nirenn would want me to do that?
Esara Verrinde says: No, I guess you’re right. I just…
Lirath brought one of her hands to his face and placed a kiss on the back of it.
Lirath Windrunner says: We will figure this out. All of us.
Velameestra Windrunner says: I’m… sorry for… bringing that up. There was… also not a good place to do it.
Esara Verrinde says: No, I’m glad! I’m seriously glad, I love Nirenn… I just don’t want her to resent me.
Gil replied he doubted that was something his mom would do, and Esara acknowledged he was probably right and it was also wonderful news.
Vereesa asked if there was anything they could do to help, and Vel admitted there wasn’t much to be done at the moment. She said she and Uther had gone to Windrunner Spire and retrieved her body because she had been worried about the orcish presence, but regardless she was currently safe.
Rhonin put a hand on Vereesa’s shoulder and said that everyone would be there when the time came, as he doubted a soul alive that knew her would want to miss it.
Rhonin Windrunner says: But that being said!
Rhonin used magic to conjure a spread of different food and drink.
Rhonin Windrunner says: I have a feeling it’s going to be a long night. We’re going to need to stay hydrated, because I think this evening is going to be dramatic. With all the love in the world.
Lirath smiled, and a voice at the edge of the camp spoke up.
Turalyon Windrunner says: I could certainly drink to that.
They looked and saw Turalyon step into the clearing. Rhonin smiled.
Rhonin Windrunner says: There he is! I was wondering if you got yourself lost!
Turalyon Windrunner says: No. Not this time at least.
He looked over and saw Vel and Gil and welcomed them both home. He said he heard some of the rumors, but he was glad they had been largely exaggerated. He said he had spoken with Uther briefly, and Vel asked if that reunion had gone well. He confirmed it did, they had still been speaking when he left.
Turalyon Windrunner says: I know this is a difficult question at points, but have any of you seen my wife?
All the Windrunner eyes went over to where Alleria was hiding behind a tree. Turalyon looked over, and Alleria stepped out.
Alleria Windrunner says: I’m… right here, my love.
She didn’t look at Turalyon as she cradled her elbows. Turalyon smiled.
Turalyon Windrunner says: It’s been too long, Alleria.
He stepped closer.
Turalyon Windrunner says: I’m sorry… I haven’t been able to reach you.
Alleria stepped back.
Turalyon Windrunner says: What’s wrong?
Alleria Windrunner says: Turalyon… there’s something you should know about me first.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Has something happened? Alleria, you know you can always tell me.
He took another step forward, and Alleria asked him to wait and she held a hand out toward him. Turalyon furrowed his brow, and Vel saw a sheen go across his eyes as he used his divine sense.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Alleria…
Vereesa Windrunner says: Turalyon, we can explain.
Alleria held up her hand.
Alleria Windrunner says: It’s alright, Little Moon. It’s alright.
She looked away.
Turalyon Windrunner says: So it’s true then… the things I’ve heard. The things that the Scarlet Crusade has… levied against your people. You all knew?
He looked around at the rest of the family.
Turalyon Windrunner says: That is why Sylvanas was avoiding me. She didn’t know what to say, when I first arrived. She didn’t want to tell me, she wanted you to, didn’t she?
Velameestra Windrunner says: She’s not the only one, uncle Turalyon.
Turalyon’s head slowly swiveled to look at Vel who had gotten up to move closer, offering Alleria support through her proximity.
Velameestra Windrunner says: It’s complicated. Things have changed. But at her core, aunt Alleria is still her, just as I am still me.
Turalyon stood in silence for a long moment.
Turalyon Windrunner says: …I see.
He exhaled a long breath.
Alleria Windrunner says: It’s alright… I will not be mad if you leave. I would never ask you to stay. Turalyon, you swore to me that you would love me until death. That’s no longer an obligation if you don’t want it to be. Walk away, please.
Turalyon stepped closer.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Alleria… as a knight of the Silver Hand, or whatever is left of it, it would be irresponsible for me to simply leave, given the circumstances. As your husband, the very thought abhors me. Tell me… why do you really want me to leave? Is it because you think that I want to, or because you are afraid? I know what they say of vampyrs… they say they feast on the blood of the living, that they manipulate, deceive… worm their way into your mind and good graces so their necks are bared willingly.
He continued to step closer.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Are you afraid that’s what’s going to happen? That that’s what you will do to me.
Alleria dug her claws into her own arm.
Alleria Windrunner says: Please… stay away…
Turalyon Windrunner says: I won’t, Alleria. Not until you give me an answer.
Alleria Windrunner says: …Yes. I am. That’s exactly why, because I’m afraid of what will happen if I get comfortable, if you get comfortable…
Turalyon Windrunner says: I see. Hold out your hand, Alleria. Can I see?
Alleria slowly held out her hand. Turalyon held out his own hand and held it flat against her’s. She flinched, but Turalyon told her not to pull back.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Look. You’re not hurting me, Alleria.
Alleria Windrunner says: But what if I do. What if I hurt you just like I hurt Vereesa… like I hurt Arator… like I hurt Sylvanas.
Turalyon Windrunner says: Then we will figure it out, my love. I don’t understand what you’re going through. But before I made that promise to you, I swore that I would try to understand and protect those who needed it. I swore that I would try to understand those who needed understanding, Alleria. I don’t know what you see when you look into the mirror. And I’m not certain I know everything I’m looking at right now… but I know I am looking at my wife, the woman I love, and… I would never turn my back on you. For now, we have this.
He interlaced his fingers with Alleria’s, and Alleria looked up at Turalyon. Her eyes were red from holding back crimson tears, and her fangs bared from the emotion of it all. Slowly, Turalyon lowered their hands, and he took a step back as he asked Alleria to join them by the fire.
Alleria crept out of the shadows and looked over at Vel with a beleaguered and distraught look of defeat, but also a small flicker of hope. Vel offered her a small smile as Alleria moved in and sat down next to the fire.
They sat in silence. Rhonin attempted to break the ice with offers of snacks and passing things out. They sensed movement out of the corner of their eyes, and they saw Sylvanas as she stepped out of the trees.
Sylvanas looked at Alleria first, and then Vel, and then moved over and took a seat by the fire.
Vereesa Windrunner says: Lady Moon! Good to see you.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Likewise, Little Moon.
She took a deep breath.
Sylvanas Windrunner says: Likewise.
