Chapter Five: Civil War

Maxwell was among the members of the Torchbearers that arrived to aid in the rescue of Sigilith Avernicious and Hedanis Poisonbloom from the hands of the Ashbringer in the middle of Andorhal separately from Uther Menethil and the rest of his companions. While Uther's band had managed to disappear following the conflict, Maxwell and his fellows were summoned by governess Annibeth Lansing to speak about their actions in the midst of her city. He, like the rest of his fellows, respected Lansing's request for them to leave Andorhal, as while she had given them sanctuary and allowed them to operate in the city, the encounter with the Scarlet Crusade was beyond what she was capable of protecting them from without risking a larger conflict.

After they had returned to the farmhouse that belonged to the family of Jessica Redpath, Maxwell and Darion Mograine were approached by a disguised Gilveradin Windrunner, who resumed the face he wore during the encounter in the square and explained that the rest of his companions were camped nearby and they were interested in speaking with the Torchbearers. Maxwell, like his fellows, was pleasantly surprised to uncover that the true identities of the combatants were none other than the crown prince of Lordaeron and his companions.

During the discussion and exchange of information that followed, Maxwell served largely as a voice of reason as one of the most veteran members of the Torchbearers and the former Knights of the Silver Hand aside from Raymond George. He relayed a great deal of the information they had come to understand about the Scarlet Crusade, including various members of their leadership under their Grand Crusader, Saidan Dathrohan. He explained that Raymond George was intending on trying to go to New Avalon, one of the primary bases of the Crusade, to speak to Saidan directly, and it was the intention for their group of the Torchbearers to stay in the regions around Andorhal to get what information they could.

He showed some degree of hesitation about the necromantic magics Velameestra Windrunner was capable of, but ultimately relented that if she had the means to save lives, he was willing to explore whatever she had to offer, even though he was no longer a ranking member of the Silver Hand. Ultimately, the body of Lance Beckett, the courier who had turned undead around Andorhal, was still in the custody of Annibeth Lansing, and he again showed resigned acceptance when the possibility of stealing said body was expressed.

When information surfaced that the grain from Capless Feather Grains in Venetia had actually been plagued with a curse of undeath that could turn any exposed to it into a feral zombie, Maxwell was very vocal about their need to act. True to his prior form, he showed some amount of hesitation when Velameestra put forth an idea about finishing her spellcraft to return the free will of the undead that were already turned, but in the end he showed willingness to try and preserve as many of the bodies as he could manage, if largely for the information they could provide and his responsibility to return them to their loved ones. He, Darion, and Liadrin Everpost then set out to try and intercept the shipments of grain that had already left Andorhal, along with the members of the Scales of Azeroth that had been redirected to focus on a similar mission.

Due to the Torchbearers' close proximity to the Scales when Uther and his companions raided Naxxramas, which was found to be the source of the plague created by Heigan Capless, he was able to join the teleport used by Samia Inkling to add his hand to the attack.
